"[Member Name Removed] is not our client, the HOA is. That being said, we have done everything we can to make her happy and it has not and will not work. [Member Name Removed] has been very rude and disrespectful to myself and also my employee's and if it were up to me I would choose not to work with her. She demands a lot of time and attention and at the end of the day she will still be unhappy."
"Thank you [Member Name Removed] for the great feedback, we enjoy working with you as well."
"The reason that the price in 2017 was different than the price in 2016 is because in 2016 Mr. [Member Name Removed] was a mowing client so a couple of times in the fall the leaves were picked up by the mowers. Due to him not being a mowing client in 2017 we had to go out there more times to insure that all of the leaves were removed before winter. Pricing was the same both years, 2017 required more work and that is why the price was higher."
"We did do the work, the issue was a communication gap between Mrs. [Member Name Removed], us and Mr.[Member Name Removed]. We initially met with Mrs. [Member Name Removed] and performed the work that we were asked to perform and when Mr. [Member Name Removed] saw the work he wanted more done that was not part of the initial estimate."
I'm adding this after reading the response. I tried to write an even-handed report of the service, with the good as well as the bad, but the reply is an attack on me and my yard and contains false information:
I contacted the company the day the work was done, as soon as I got home from work and saw what was done. It took him two weeks to come out in response to several calls and emails from me.
He never said anything about flagging plants. I planned to be there, but because they came a day early without warning, I wasn't there.
The weeds were no worse than they would be in any yard in a wet spring. The yard was well maintained in the prior year; in fact, I have been asked by organizers to apply for the Clintonville Garden Tour last year and this year. I have three large maples, so there was a lot of leaf cover from the winter, which I leave in the beds for mulch -- that's why I called.
He didn't tell me "if she could prove exactly what we supposedly took out and how much each item was I would deduct that amount." If he had, I actually might have been able to find photos of the beds from previous years. But take notice -- if they remove perennials from your yard out of ignorance, it will be on you to prove it.
$200 off a $1000 job isn't "trying to get something for free." It wouldn't even cover the replacement value of the plants.
I would have said this company would be fine for simpler jobs, but the dishonesty of this reply makes me think twice.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I have a large yard with flower beds that are densely planted with perennials, and to be fair, there were a lot of leaves covering the beds from the previous fall. Normally, I do the work in the yard, but because we were preparing to sell our house, I didn't have time. I needed it to be tidy looking. Technically, that's what I got, in the sense that the leaves were gone and the mulch was in place with a clean, though ungraceful edge. However, the job didn't come close to its own standard.
The company was very helpful in booking us promptly during a busy season. We agreed on a date -- as I recall, it was within a week or two of when I called. They were also good about coordinating what needed to be done and adjusting the price accordingly; I ordered edging and mulch, but no pruning. So far, so great.
Unfortunately, probably because of forecasted wet weather, they came the day before, when I wasn't there. When I returned from work, I was appalled at what I found. At first glance, I could see that most of my perennials were buried in mulch; for many, the foliage was bowing under it. At second glance, I noticed that most of the beds still had a LOT of very visible weeds -- ground ivy aka chick weed, grass, even dandelions. At third glance, I could see the things that weren't there -- after a careful inventory, I identified a list of around 20 perennials that were entirely gone, including swaths of creeping thyme, a wide bed of bee balm and a large, mature epidemium, many ladies' mantle, and a dozen 4-year-old alpine strawberries, all of which I had recently noticed were coming along quite nicely. And they had pruned several shrubs very heavily, in ways that I definitely didn't want.
I called immediately, hoping that they could come out to see what I was seeing and expressed how very unhappy I was. They said they would try, but didn't make it until more than a week later. By that time, I had had to excavate several plants. Brad came out and reviewed the yard with me.
In response to the remaining weeds in the bed, he said that the workers purposely left them there because they were blooming and they couldn't be sure that I didn't want them. I find that argument absurd, given that they are all very common weeds in this area.
In response to the missing perennials, he argued that some had not yet come out because of the wet spring. I'm willing to believe that that is true of a few of them. I'm also willing to admit that it was early enough in the season, that the strawberries, which had been scraped away, did come back with new growth. However, I can still name a good number of others that are gone, gone, gone.
He offered to have the team come back to fix it, but his visit didn't restore my confidence that they would do the job correctly the next time, so I didn't schedule that. I indicated that I wanted the price reduced, but I didn't say how much at that stage; I guess I was waiting to see what he would offer.
Then, what with showing the house, I have to admit that I forgot about it when I didn't hear from him again. Now, two months later, I have received an "adjusted invoice," which took $50 off. I then asked for $200, and was told that that was impossible and the invoice was final. I gave up and paid it.
To my mind, the work they did was simply not up to a reasonable standard, though Brad never admitted that point. I literally cried over my yard when I saw it, and was upset for weeks afterwards. It still burns me to see the spaces where I should now be seeing mature plants in full growth. I don't know what a reasonable adjustment for heart-ache would have been, but I believe $945 plus tax is too much to pay for this work. If I was staying in the house, I would have at least expected them to replace the missing plants, and they would have added up to more that $200.
"In response to the review, the yard was overtaken with weeds before we had gotten there. There were so many weeds it was hard to tell what was a weed and what was a flower. She called about two weeks after we were done and as you can imagine we had rain in that two week period. With the rain more weeds had grown through the mulch because of how bad the weeds were from the beginning. If I had to guess the yard did not do a fall clean up the previous year due to how bad it was. I did go back over there and walked the property and she had trouble even remembering if we did or didn't remove the things she said we did. I figured to remove $50.00 off of her bill was fair due to no exact amount of plants that we allegedly took out. Like we tell all of our clients if they want to make sure we do not take plants out that they need to be marked with a ribbon or spray paint and this was not done. We tried to do her a favor and get her in within a week before her house went on the market which no other company could do and this is what we get in return. Unfortunately there are people out there that are just looking to get something for free and this is a prime example. I told her if she could prove exactly what we supposedly took out and how much each item was I would deduct that amount. She was unable to do so because we did not remove all of the items she accused us of doing so I felt $50.00 was more then fair. Basically you cannot wait two weeks to call about a spring clean up because weeds will grow everyday if they are not maintained and this particular yard they were definitely not maintained for a long period of time so they were going to come back regardless. We strive to make each and every customer happy but there are times this is not possible and having to do the work for free is not a good business practice in my book."
some weeds were just covered up with mulch.
Many weeds came back just a few weeks later.
It was cheap but also quick/sloppy job.
