The Handyman Company

Terribly disappointed. In July 2013 I contacted Joe Roberts, owner of The Handyman Company, for a bid to touch up exterior paint of our white brick home, tuck point where necessary and repair, paint and rehang shutters . Mr. Roberts said he preferred T/M to an estimated bid. I explained I was not comfortable with T/M. He assured me that unlike other contractors his workmen were excellent, did not waste time. He added I could trust him to closely supervise the work and complete the work in a timely fashion adding that once started his men would not be going off to do other jobs like other contractors tend to do. He also added T/M would be less since contractors factor in higher bids to cover themselves from the unexpected. I contacted him in July he explained he had several other jobs to complete before starting our project. He assured me that when his team did start our project would get full attention. This was not the case. The job was not started until mid September. On November 4th the job was not completed. Workers were schedule only 10 days out of 46, two of these days only one man came and stayed only 1to 1.5 hrs. His workers were great when they were here. Mr. Roberts was not on site as promised and had little knowledge of the actual work and seemed not to care. I hired The Handyman Company based on the Angie List reviews of 2012 and early 2013. Apparently high marks increased his business to the point that the attributes: Punctuality. Responsiveness, Professionalism, diminished considerably as demand grew. When the men failed to show up the entire week of Oct. 28th, I called and asked Mr. Roberts to come to view the work left to do and explain why his men had not been scheduled. Mr. Roberts was defensive and had "excuses" for not assigning men to our project. Weather can be a consideration for exterior work, however, inside space was provided for work on the shutters. The most upsetting excuse was his condescending explanation: "as you should know, business is business and other jobs were more important than ours and in business you need to take care of the more important customer". Others on the property overheard the conversation with Mr. Roberts. One stated he was appalled at the attitude and rudeness of the contractor and was tempted to step in. Clearly something has changed in the way Mr. Roberts conducts his business. This is unfortunate because he has a great crew, but they are spread too thin which is unfair to them and to the customer. ( this was confirmed by several of his men ) During my 72years I have never fired anyone from a job. Due to his attitude toward me and his failure to perform as stated when seeking the job, I asked him to leave. Our painting is not finished, several shutters are not attached properly, winter weather is here. Enough said.

Joe and every member of his crew were extremely professional, responsive and friendly. Because the house is very old and the basement was unfinished, there were bumps along the way requiring custom work. We knew what we were getting ourselves into with an old basement having an uneven floor and walls, odd, low duct work and old pipes. The basement looks great and they made all the weird angles look completely normal. Andy and all of Joe's guys were communicative, helpful and approachable. We are very happy with the work they did. We also had them install a new vanity, toilet and lighting in our upstairs bathroom, which also looks great. They completed the work in much less time than all other contractors we contacted before we decided to go with Joe, which was a bonus because we wanted the work completed before the holidays. We would highly recommend Joe & his crew and would definitely use them again for future projects.

It all seemed like it was going well at first outside of some scratches to our hardwood floors. Afterwards I noticed more and more issues. They sealed around a toilet which broke within a month causing a large leak. They installed a piece of trim to replace one that had to use to match in another part of the house, but the piece of trim they replaced it with was not stained like the rest of our house. My biggest concern was that the half wall they tore down so we could install granite (the whole purpose of hiring them) was not properly created to support granite and was not even level. When the granite folks came to measure they said they would have to reinforce the whole wall and showed us why. There was no way the initial wall could have supported granite. The one plus is that the men doing the work were very nice and Joe responded to our complaints immediately, but it got to the point where I was so sick of calling him about the details that were not taken care of that I just stopped calling.

Danny and Andy did a smashing job! The birch counter tops were in 3 pieces and they fitted them together in an "L-shaped" configuration. You can't imagine how difficult it is to make these perfect, but they did! The apron front Kohler sink was 250 pounds and they put in supports. That sink is not going anywhere! Andy had never put in a pot filler faucet before, but he was able to figure it out and it's great. Andy is coming back soon to tile my back splash, so I am cautious about giving a great report until he is finished. Not because he won't do a great job, but they are all great workers at the Handyman Company and so reasonable that people will be calling Joe Roberts to book them and I will have to wait a while to get them out here again.

After rearranging my schedule, the worker was a no show - no call. I called Joe Roberts and he was not aware that 'his man' did not show. I did not know someone other than Joe was going to be doing the work. Mr. Roberts checked on his worker then returned a call and said his employee had been sick and he was unaware of it. I did not reschedule and decided to go elsewhere where they are more dependable.

This was a major job which couldn't have gone better. There were delays when the cabinets were not completed on time and Joe installed temporary sink, etc so we did not go without a kitchen for an extended period. On a few occasions we changed our mind about what we wanted, Joe was always ready and able to meet our expectations. All work was done professionally, on the timetable promised, and the new kitchen exceeds our expectations. When the work was completed, everything was cleaned up, no mess. Including the cost of cabinets, appliances, etc this was a $35,000 renovation and worth every penny. I will definitely use this company again.

Ready to work each morning at 8 AM; Excellent workers. Fully kept us informed of each project and next steps. Timely estimates delivered as work unfolded; stayed with the jobs until completed which was very helpful in meeting dates required to place home on the market. Would definitely use Joe and his team again, and I would highly recommend the Handyman Company. This is a veteran owned company (Semper Fi!)

He was excellent! He was here on time and did what needed to be done, he was very good! Jim Trimpe is the man that came out.

I made appt to do above work Friday before painters were to come next Tuesday. Joe called Thursday and said Andy could not come Friday and was off Monday. I explained painters were coming Tuesday and work had to be done before painting. He said he would get Andy to come on Monday. Andy was here a few minutes after 8 and Joe followed with countertop he picked up on way about 15 minutes later. They took out old one and Joe gave me estimates for several projects I needed done, and the estimates were good and he was very personable and professional. I looked forward to working with him but I would not want him to send Andy again. To be fair I should have called him but I am not confrontational. Andy worked all day and did a good job on light fixtures and faucet and garbage disposal. I had to remind him on his way out to fix plaster so he did that really quick and sloppy. The side trim was crooked and he said if it falls off iron it back on?!? It did. I did not. The trim and plaster were lousy enough but after fooling around with the fan for a while, he said we should get a replacement part instead of replacing the fan and he would look into getting the part and call me back. He never called. To add insult to injury he overcharged me! This was the only time I was disappointed with Angie's List providers. The C grade is very generous but because I liked Joe so much and did not call him about the problems, I felt it was unfair to give the real grade.

Joe was very professional and always on time. We were very satisfied with him overall. His estimate was very reasonable (we had received 5 other estimates). Joe was one of 2 contractors we were considering for our basement remodel and we had a hard time deciding because I believe we would have been satisfied with either of them. Ultimately we ended up going with the slightly cheaper contractor (and I do mean slightly). I would definitely consider Joe for future projects however.

Excellent. Dan's strongest point is his prompt and accurate communication both by phone and email. Response time and scheduling was great. The estimate was detailed, so there was no confusion as to what was to be done and not done. The craftsman did great work, was punctual, clean, friendly. Very trustworthy organization. This is our second experience, will hire again.

This was a father and son team. They were fast, professional, efficient and neat. What more could anyone want?

I received an estimate the day of closing, They arrived the day after furnature was moved in - the project took 3 days, is both safe and beautiful, We could not be happier.

Joe and his crew are great to work with. We needed to be in the new office by December 1, 2012. The gentlemen completed this job in about 10 days, taking only Thanksgiving off, so we could move in on time. Very dedicated, professional, honest and experienced. Joe even brought in his own employee to clean up during and after each phase of work. Folks who saw the office before and after cannot believe how good it looks. We took before and after pictures and you would not know it is the same space.

The experience was great. I had crown put in one room and trim in the second room. They were prompt, courteous, and professional. I have another room that I want crown in and I will definitely be calling Joe!

From the estimating to the finishing stage Joe Roberts and his group did a fantastic job. When I received Joe's original bid I was surprised at how reasonable he offers his services for. We were naturally skeptical since price sometimes equates to quality. In this case that is not the case at all. Joe was the low bid on the project and did a really nice, high quality job. They helped us basically remodel a kitchen, did some repair work in an office and straightened a lot of plumbing issues out we had in our Utility Room. They started the day they said they would. They finished the day they said they would. We had an issue with a sink that leaked after the original installation. Joe sent his plumber right over. No questions asked and they fixed the problem immediately. I was impressed that he stood by his work @ 5:30 PM on a Friday. We appreciated that his commitment to a job wasn't between 0800 - 1700 Monday through Friday. Thank you again for that Joe! His associates were on time everyday. Were personable and professional. They cleaned their area at the end of the day and worked hard while they were on the job. We would definitely hire The Handyman Company again and we plan on doing that this Spring!

I just purchased a home that needed some work prior to moving in and needed the projects done in less than a month. I needed an elevator removed, hardwood floors refinished, interior painting and plumbing work in the basement. Joe was very responsive throughout the process. He provided quick, reasonable, and accurate estimates. He discussed alternatives and solutions to address my needs. Once engaged, he started on-time and finished the work earlier than agreed-upon. Joe's flooring and painting crews were punctual and did an excellent job. I'm very happy with the result and would highly reccommend using the Handyman Co.

My husband and I are kicking ourselves for not calling them earlier. We have had a list of about 15 things to do for about 4 years. We've never had the time to address these odd jobs so we just let the idea of fixing them hang over our head. What a relief to finally get that punch list of items completed, Ahhh! Very professional and optimistic, there was no item on our list that they were not able to fix. What a value too, we will absolutely use this The Handyman Company again.

I spoke with Joe Roberts to understand how I would be charged and discuss the details of the job. We agreed on a time and I followed up with an email outlining the projects. As much as possible, I had materials ready when the work began. The job went well. Andy and his team were pleasant, professional, and easy to work with. They arrived ready to work and brought materials to fix the split rail fence. They assessed the projects and created a list of things they needed from the hardware store to complete their work. They picked up the additional materials on their way back from lunch. I appreciated their efficient use of time and recycled as much as possible. They worked well together, were efficient, thoughtful, knowledgeable and offered good advice and creative solutions. I'm really grateful that all the work is done and is working well. I will definitely call them again.

We needed a handyman to install new faucet units on our kitchen sink and a bathroom sink. The Handyman Company sent Andy, who arrived first thing in the morning, promptly and professionally did the work, and cleaned up. He noted that the bathroom sink's trap was in bad shape and would need replacing soon. He still had enough time left over from the 2-hour minimum service call time to go to the nearest hardware store and buy a new sink trap and he installed it at no further cost. Oh, and we got a 10% discount by using the coupon from Angie's List. I will certainly call The Handyman Company next time we need something done around this home.

When I called The Handyman Co. on July 10th I spoke with Joe the owner. He was very polite and professional on the phone. I asked if he could come out and give me an estimate. He ask what type of work needed to be done. I gave him my list of items; he told me that the charge would be by the hour, which I thought the price he gave me was fair and reasonable. So I agree to have the work performed. And he said that he'll send someone out on Thursday, July 12th to perform the work. So the worker came out at the exact time Joe said he would be there. He was prompt and ready to start work. He was neat and cleaned up his mess very well. My husband sure appreciated that. The work was completed in two days. I would definitely call The Handyman Co. again and would recommend the company to my family and friends.

The experience was excellent. The workmanship is beyond superior as they are very knowledgeable and experienced in the different jobs they can do. They are honest and very customer service oriented. They are very positive about your to-do list and never make it seem as if you are asking them to do too much. They are efficient with their tasks as well. They are also prompt in showing up for their appointments. They really take the extra step to make sure you are pleased with the results. Andy is the man who did my jobs and he did a great job representing The Handyman Co. Their pricing is definitely reasonable.

Don't have much more to add to the above. Liked his prices, liked his ideas, loved his team. Got the project done within a reasonable distance from estimate and on time.
