Description of Work: After a couple of conversations on the phone, he came over and inspected our chimney and dampers. The top damper wasn't closing correctly. He explained our options for replacing the damper and quoted a reasonable price. However, after he climbed up to the top of the chimney, he fixed the problem without replacing the damper. He put us on the schedule for a chimney sweep in the Spring. I was impressed with his knowledge of the equipment and his honesty in fixing the problem without having to replace it. He also checked the moisture level of the wood in our wood pile and explained what to look for when the wood is sufficiently dry to burn. When I asked him how much I owed him, he said $20 to pay for his gas and signed us up for chimney cleaning in the Spring. Overall great service call -- I'll be using him again.

Description of Work: Repaired our chimney, Installed a new cap and critter guard and applied 2 coats of paint. | |This was begun early October. The repairs and installation were completed and the winter set in. The next to the last week in May Bill returner and completed the priming and painting of the complete installation to complete the whole job. | |I will use this company again and recommend them to others.

Description of Work: Requested a cleaning and inspection of our wood burning fireplace. Both were completed in about an hour (chimney not too dirty). Some minor cracks were found on the outside of the chimney (a verbal quote was obtained for the repair). Chimney and firebox are much cleaner now (they did a good job).

They gave me information about when I needed to have it cleaned and didn't need to have it cleaned every year, but every two or three years. I thought that this was very honest of him especially since the more that he comes out, the more money he makes.

+ -1 moreVery thorough in looking, and determined that I didn't need the work done now. Gave me an estimate (in writing) on how long until I need a chimney cleaning, and described for me the condition of the chimney and area around it on the level I wasn't willing to climb up to (but invited me to look on the level I WAS comfortable climbing up to.) Described future work that COULD be done, and future costs, but recommended that it was not necessary now. I appreciated the thorough inspection and the sense that I was not being pushed into unnecessary repairs. Because the inspection was quick and straightforward and did not result in work needing to be done, he discounted the inspection and house call rate quoted on the phone. He was late and I called, but they were trying to reach me. When I set up the appointment I only gave/was asked for a daytime number which was my work number, and they didn't have my home number to notify me they were running late. Just make sure to give a home #.
Description of Work: Came out to inspect the chimney and look up on the roof on two levels for the potential source of a leak. Looked in fireplace, in basement, on first story roof, and second story roof.

+ -1 moreThis was the second time we've hired Top Hat to inspect and clean. The first time was right after we moved into our home and wanted it inspected prior to using the fireplace. He informed us then that the fireplace had never been used and to contact him in 100 fires or 3 years. To be on the safe side, we contacted them after just 2 years and they again informed us that the chimney did not need cleaned. Bill is extremely friendly and helpful. They are going to return to install a custom chimney cap.

Our sweep took a thorough look up the chimney, pointed out damage done over the years, gave us several estimates for various corrective actions, then recommended that we not take any of them, even though they would have made Top Hat several thousand dollars. Recommended a vent-free gas log system, which costs about 1/10 of what the required chimney repairs would.
