Mark's services in every respect were excellent. His work was as perfect as a very old house such as ours would allow. He was timely and very professional. He provided very good advice and took time to discuss with me the various options relating to the jobs, including those I had not considered. He is an extremely professional and capable handyman, very skilled at a very many different types of tasks, and is extraordinarily personable. I would clearly work with Mark again if the occasion arises. Unless he was substantially unavailable for an extended period during which I needed work done, I would not seek the services of any other.
Description of Work: On a single day, Mark did a number of jobs in the house, the largest being the installation of overlay flooring on a third floor landing. This required cutting and trimming a plywood sheet around many obstructions, including a newel post, floor saddles, etc. ... all and all a very exacting job. He also removed stove venting duct work, which had been improperly installed by a prior owner, as well as patched the holes and gaps in a very secure and aesthetically pleasing manner. He also installed floor molding on a second floor landing, as well as trimmed a door so that it would close easily.

lt went very well. Mark is a professional carpenter and his work shows it. The project took longer than expected as he was short a worker and had to work alone on two jobs. The end result was it was worth it as the work was done well and he was able to make crooked walls and ceilings look straight. Bottom line is I will hire him again and probably soon to do additional work in my basement.
Description of Work: Built several custom closets (#1)96"X24" with 6, 48" shelves & 4, 24" bi fold doors. (2)30"X24" with 3 shelves & 30" bi fold door( #3) Electric close 24 X 72" with 2 shelves and finished all closets with moldings. Also moved a small wall 6" and installed a new 30" x 74" 6 panel door. Install 3 kitchen cabinets. Price above is for Labor only. Materials were extra.

Mark and his assistant Mo tried to repair my gate on a Thursday afternoon and needed to make a return visit since it was not a simple fix. They returned the following Tuesday and were able to make it look and work just fine. I am very pleased with their expertise and professionalism and will look to contact them for my next project.

Mark was terrific! He truly went Above & Beyond to make this job work properly! What I thought would be a simple job of running a new electric line & installing a ceiling light turned into a real challenge. The existing wiring was located in an old & very dusty crawl space attic with no light source. Mark crawled through the dust, found the existing wiring & after a very challenging time of tracing the correct wiring managed to make the job happen properly & safely. He even had to rewire some of the old wiring to make the new wiring safe. It wasn't easy! He did all of this with good humor & a "can do" attitude. Mark was terrific & I would feel no hesitation in recommending his services to friends. Thanks Mark!
Description of Work: Mark ran a new electrical line to install a ceiling light & then installed the light fixture.

Mark originally came over in late July and then scheduled the jobs for September. He gave me written estimates and then changed one of the written estimates to exclude materials when it clearly said materials included. I did not have him do that job. The next job he originally gave me a 3-4 day turn around because I had tenants on site and then switched it to 8 days. It meant my tenants would be without a bathroom for 8 days. When I said that was unacceptable he changed it back again. Nevertheless, I did not use his services as I felt we exchanged too many emails, there were too many changes and nothing ever was accomplished.
Description of Work: He was supposed to tile the bathroom floor and rebuild a walkway.

Response from Above & Beyond Carpentry Inc.
Originally there were 2 jobs planned. One was a floating deck which the labor alone was for $400.00 plus the cost of the wood (normally a $1200 - $1500 job depending on the size and difficulty). Unfortunately, without actually picking up the material it is hard to say what the actual cost of materials will be.During this time she was also deliberating about whether to use wood or go with pavers..In her case the wood was going to be around $300. I found that this always works best for the customers who are budget minded rather than charging a higher price. Despite my explanations, verbally, through countless emails and writing it in the estimate, she still insisted that the whole job should be $400.00. In regards to the last job this is really just a case of unrealistic expectations and missed communications. Where the customer might have forgotten what was explained during the initial estimate in her haste to rent the place or something that I probably should have reminded her a few weeks prior to the start. Due to a death in my family (my mother passed away 8/5), business was the last thing on my mind.and figuring it was not brought up I thought this was not going to be an issue. We had planned to start the work when her tenants moved out at the end of the month of August. She originally was going to have the place vacant until the 15th of the month so I could do the work. As I explain to all my customers in regards to doing tile work. It's usually just 2 to 3 days doing the actual work, the majority of the time it's waiting for the tile glue to dry. This process takes anywhere from 24 to 36 hours for the mortar mix to dry and then you have to wait 18 to 24 hours to let the grout dry. In her case we were also ripping up the floor to the studs because the wood had rotted away and the existing floor was unstable. A new sub floor was to be installed after the rotted one was removed, then a mud job (cement poured to level the floor). Then we proceed with the installation of the tile, replace the toilet and then paint the bathroom. I would love to be able to go Above & Beyond, I usually do, but despite my explanations and offers to start a day earlier she ultimately rejected having the job done so that her tenants could move in. Ultimately I take full responsibility for this.I have also adjusted my estimates to reflect approximate material costs verses actual material costs and I also added estimated drying times where tiling is concerned. Sincerely Mark Wirth

Mark did an excellent job in all respects. He showed up as/when promised, and was on the job himself at all times. His crew was polite, respectful, and neat. At the end of each day of the 3-day job, the work site was cleaned and left immaculate. Although I knew the result that I wanted (replaced sill plates), I particularly valued Mark's ideas for how to accomplish that goal. Throughout the project, Mark was pro-active in suggesting ways to accomplish the goal that would give us the best result possible. Mark really wanted to do the best job that could be done. Mark's estimate for the original job was very competitive, and although the job became much bigger (while we were in the middle of it), Mark's price for the additional work was just as fair. When the job was over, I truly felt as though I had gotten an outstanding job at an outstanding price. There are a million guys out there doing this kind of work. I'm really happy to have found Above & Beyond Carpentry, so that I've got someone I'll be confident to call whenever I need work in the future.
Description of Work: I originally contacted Mark (owner) for the replacement of sill plates sitting on our home's foundation, that had been damaged by water over the years. After disassembling a deck to create access to the damaged sill plates, we found further damage to the deck's structural support beams and planks, which made it necessary to rebuild the deck with new materials.

It went very well!! First he called with an estimated time of the estimate. He arrived withing the estimated times given, provided several options to solve my problem. He then emailed me several websites to help me make a decision. We spoke three times while my wife and I made our decisions. He placed the orders, and called me when the items arrived ( Custom Order) Day of install he arrived on time and quickly placed tarps down to cover my wood floors and completed the work completely I was so pleased that he is going to give me an estimate for work at my Fathers house !

Mark did an excellent job, he was neat, made sure to clean up when he was done. His prices were very reasonable. I will definitely be using him again and have already recommended him to a friend. He is very professional and even called in the morning to let me know when he would be arriving.
Description of Work: Mark removed existing shelves in my kitchen pantry and put new shelves in the pantry, he painted the pantry and the new shelves. In addition he replaced 6 door handles including my bedrooms and various closet doors and fixed 4 doors so that they would close. The holes in the doors had to be re-drilled for the new handles, he used drop clothes to minimize the saw dust from the drilling.

I was very pleased with the service. Mark did a wonderful job in a timely manner. His price was very reasonable (he was working on the vanity for about an hour and 15 minutes). I will definitely use Mark again in the future.
Description of Work: I had recently had a plumber come in and replace a leaky faucet in our powder room. The faucet and sink sit in a wall mounted vanity. After the work was done, it looked like the vanity was leaning off the wall and ready to snap. Based on the reviews on Angie's List, I called Above & Beyond Carpentry to come in and see what they could do. Mark and his apprentice removed a lot of the vanity in order to get to the source of the problem. He used a car jack to jack the vanity up until it was level, then secured the vanity with wood and screws.

From my first conversation with Mark I felt we could work together. He has great ideas and enjoys sharing them, always leaving the final choice to me. The first time he was here we went thru many of the improvements I wanted done. As the past 5 weeks have gone by I've needed him to help me more than I originally thought. When he is busy he tells me but always makes time within the week to help me out. Each time he does something he works in an excellent manner. I have a heavy light fixture that I needed taken down from my old home, brought to the new one and rehung there. It was a very difficult job if just because Mark was alone. It took a while but Mark got that light up and it was not at all easy. I wouldn't have blamed him for a minute if he had said he couldn't do it but this guy does not like to give up! I wanted a slider in a kitchen cabinet that was rather narrow. Mark made sure it was perfect. He built shelves for me in my closet and he had good ideas about how to place them. I've moved from a large home to a much smaller townhouse, so space is a big concern for my family's things. Mark has put together and hung up over a dozen organizing units. He has fixed lighting problems, plumbing problems, etc. I think he can do just about anything which is a good thing because my husband and I can do none of this! I've recommended him to my friends with no hesitation. He'll be our home engineer as long as he has his hammer and tape measure!
Description of Work: Mark worked in different rooms. He has been here several times before and works hard each time. He always leaves each area clean. This day he worked in the downstairs bathroom providing another outlet for my son and hanging up a towel rack. He then went to the kitchen and hung up more spice racks and rehung a pot cover gizmo. He measured for a sliding shelf he's constructing for me and showed me options for under the counter lighting. He hung pictures for me and we discussed choices for my outside door closure as well as for my deck. He spent 3 hours here adjusting things in my new home that weren't fitting together well. Mark's prices are very reasonable given the excellent quality of his work. He is usually punctual but I always get a call or a text if his prior job is keeping him late. He is responsible to the letter and extremely kind. I was preparing for a holiday and rushing to get my new home ready for guests. My important pictures were not hung up and Mark's time was filled up. He gave up personal time on a Sunday afternoon to hang these pictures for me! He's really quite an incredible human being in addition to being a terrific fix-it engineer.

After contacting Mark through the list, I set up an appointment for Sunday late afternoon for an estimate on a paint job. He called that afternoon and said he wouldn't be able to make it, could we do it the next night. I said fine, that I'd be home at 6pm. He said he'd be there between 6 and 7. At 7:15 he called to say he was close. I told him not to bother. If you're late for a job you don't have yet, I can't imagine that you'd be on time for the actual job. I was quite disappointed. He was very nice and apologized but it left a bad taste.

Response from Above & Beyond Carpentry Inc.
I am a sole proprietor which means I handle all the calls and do almost all the work. I would like to apologize to [member name removed] if she feels that I missed her appointment and wasted her time. I try to clearly communicate with all my customers and unfortunately, in this case there appears to be some sort of miscommunication. As with all my customers I give an approximate time (usually an hour) and I had told her that I was working on a job in the city over the weekend and that "IF" I finished up early enough on Sunday I would call her and do the estimate, it was not a definite appointment. After finishing up the job late Sunday I called the customer and scheduled the estimate on Monday between 630 and 730 pm, being that she stated she usually gets home around 530 pm. At 715 I called the customer to state that I would be a few minutes.I was looking for a parking spot and I was literally right behind her building when she stated "Not to bother". Had I missed the appointment outright I would understand that someone would not want to do business with me but this is not the case and it clearly does not have any reflection on my work. I give all my customers 110% of effort and even though it's not fair in my opinion to receive an "F" rating for a miscommunication the responsibility ultimately falls on me. Sincerely, Mark Wirth

Mr. Wirth, visited us twice, the first time was to see the work to be done and to give his estimate for the service and the second was to actually do the job. He came at the appointed time of 9.30 a.m. and before entering the door showed me his license and insurance cards. He started work on removing the damaged exhaust fan and replacing it with the new one. He spent about an hour and a half on this project. Next he checked out the leaky faucet after which he informed me he had to replace a couple of parts. After buying the parts and handing me the receipt from Home Depot, he proceeded to install the new parts. In all, he spent about 3 hours on the 2 projects. I think he charged me very reasonably and even gave me a "Senior" discount. Before I called Mr. Wirth, I had asked another Chinese handyman for an estimate for the job and he quoted me the same price. I went with Mr. Wirth because he seemed to know what he was going to do and it was easy to converse in English with him. I was also comfortable with the knowledge that he was licensed and insured. I will not hesitate to call him for another handyman's job again and to recommend him to my friends.
