You Move Me

Movers arrived and parked the truck in a manner that would clearly not be efficient for loading. After I helped them improve the parking location, they then spent 20 minutes folding blankets from the previous move.( I was paying by the hour). The truck that they brought was too small so a great deal of time was spent in arranging and re-arranging everything that was brought out of the house so it could all fit in the truck. Worker A worked exclusively in the truck while Worker B carried things from the house. When an object required two people, then work in the truck stopped. When the house was finally empty, six hours after they arrived, the truck was packed from bottom to top (except for the 16 square feet of floor space that was occupied by the unused blankets). In order to achieve the six hour load time, I carried items from the house to the curb. After we got to the storage facility, they switched roles and Worker B was working in the unit while Worker A unloaded the truck while I ferried hand carts from the truck to the unit. It soon became apparent that Worker B was not as skilled in arranging when the unit soon was filled and the truck still had 1/3 of the cargo still in it. This situation required removing and repacking the stuff in the unit. Long story shorter, the job was finished 11 hours after starting. The estimate on their work order was 4.5 hours. They told me when I challenged the cost that their estimate was based on my verbal answers to their questions on the phone two weeks before the move when I couldn't have known an accurate estimate of the contents since some stuff was slated to be sold. In any event, they should have sent a representative to preview the job prior to sending one (too small) truck and two (less than experienced) workers.
After the job was done and paid, I called into the office and spoke to a manager and told him all this and he said he couldn't adjust the bill but he would send me several $50 off coupons for my next move. I gave him my new address and now, six weeks later, they still haven't arrived. My conclusion is that this company is not ready for prime time and I paid the price to discover that.
