This job was done on October 25, 2013 and the review was done on March 6, 2014. The customer signed her invoice on the job and right above her signature is the wording "I have inspected the work and found it satisfactory." Any Angie’s List customer wishing to see this document can contact us and we will e-mail them a copy of it. This review is the first communication of any sort we have received from the customer that there was any problem with the job. Below is the final paragraph of the request we sent to this customer, and to all customers from whom we request reviews. "Please take a few moments to give us a rating. If there was any part of your experience with my company with which you were unhappy, give me a call at the number below. If we can help you with other repairs or remodeling projects in your home in the future, please keep us in mind. I have included a list of projects that we could help you with should the need arise. Again, thank you for your business!" She does not extend us the courtesy of a phone call letting us know she has some problem. Instead, she fires off a poor review on Angie’s List. Why this customer or any other Angie’s List customer that has a problem with work we do does not simply pick up the phone and call us is beyond me. We always respond immediately to any concern that a customer has regarding the work we do and resolve any problems. We probably sound like a broken record, but as we have stated several times in response to this type of review, if this customer, or any other, thinks writing bad reviews on Angie’s List is going to get their problem solved or encourage some behavior change on the part of the provider, they are sadly mistaken.

When I contacted this handyman, it was to measure for new storm doors. An elderly, frail looking gentleman arrived to measure the doors. He returned by himself to hang these doors. He was unable to carry the doors from the garage to the porch; he was also going to hang those doors on the present weakened rotting door facing, which would only take a good gust of wind to blow the doors off, because they had very little on which to anchor them. Although he was asked by me and my son to change it. He called his office and told his boss that the door facing was in good condition. His boss told us that if his worker said the wooden frame of the door was in good condition, then the doors will be hung on them. I was charged $75.00 to measure 2 doors. The $75.00 would be inclusive in the price with installation of doors. Off course, I refused to have my doors installed on rotting frames.

It went very well. Rufino, one of the contractors for Handyman Connections, gave us an estimate to do the jobs, showed up the following week when he said he would, had two men for one day, and came back three days later to sand, and apply a second coat. They were very neat and the work done was professional.
Description of Work: Repaired cracked plaster throughout our house, put two sections of sheet rock where the plaster wall was broken or had a hole too big to plaster over. Repaired two concrete sections in our unfinished basement. One was a hole 5' by 3' by 7" deep where an old furnace has sat, and filled in concrete where ah access hole to a crawl space had been left unfinished.

Several points about this review: 1 The exact dimensions of the pantry that was built are on the contract that the customer signed on 12/11/2013. Anyone who wants to see this, or the document referred in #2 below, can contact me and I will be glad to e-mail it to them. 2 The exact dimensions of the pantry are on the invoice the customer signed, above which it states that "I have inspected the work and found it satisfactory." 3. Before he began to do the framing of the pantry, the craftsman put a mark on the wall showing the customer exactly how deep the pantry would be to accommodate 12" pantry shelving that was possible. 16" pantry shelving could not be used as to make the pantry big enough to accommodate 16" shelving the door that would be on the pantry would bang into an adjacent door. Given the particular door and space configuration, a pantry deeper than 24" could not be built. 4. The customer sat in her kitchen where the work was being done watching what was being done. If she did not like the way it was turning out why did she not tell the craftsman or call the office discuss it with us? 5. Below is the final paragraph of the request I sent to this customer, and to all customers from whom we request reviews. "Please take a few moments to give us a rating. If there was any part of your experience with my company with which you were unhappy, give me a call at the number below. If we can help you with other repairs or remodeling projects in your home in the future, please keep us in mind. I have included a list of projects that we could help you with should the need arise. Again, thank you for your business!" Although this customer expects excellent customer service from us and would complian to the high heavens if she did not receive it, she does not extend us the courtesy of a phone call letting us know she has some problem. Instead, she fires off a poor review on Angie’s List. The review was the first notification we received that there was any problem with her job. As we have stated several times in response to this type of review, if this customer, or any other, thinks writing bad reviews on Angie’s List is going to get their problem solved, or encourage some behavior change on the part of the provider, they are sadly mistaken.

Nothing, No call never showed up. Said he got to the end of the driveway and someone told him to go away. Not true they were plowing my driveway. Didnt bother to walk down my driveway and knock on the door. Call them up to find out where he is and Mr Smith was totally unprofessional and refused to have the handyman come back out that day. Now the items I need completed on a Friday which I wanted done Wednesday by the way wont be completed in time for family coming into town this weekend. Save yourself alot of headache and stay away from these folks they run it with no accountability dispatch handymen from around the area dont really care who you are, which is their customer. Beware.

What the member is reporting is simply not true. We showed up on time. His driveway was being plowed. The people doing the work told my craftsman that this was a private road and asked why he was there, and stated he could not come through. I was not there so I cannot confirm how the conversation went. My craftsman parked on the road and called the customer several (3) times and left him one message. The driveway was admittedly long and for the customer to expect my craftsman to wade through an icy and snow covered driveway was ridiculous. As far as being unprofessional again another false statement. The customer called me at 12:20pm regarding the 9am appointment. I told him it was odd that the craftsman did not show as this was out of character and I had talked with him earlier when he was on his way. I called my craftsman and he explained what I have described above and by this time he was at his second job and unable to return. I called to talk to the customer (within ½ hour) and explained what had happened and that we were unable to return that day but could come back….before I could finish what I was saying I was told “YOU WILL COME BACK TODAY!” and if I didn’t he was “GOING STRAIGHT TO [removed profanity] ANGIES LIST TO GIVE YOU A BAD REVIEW!”. I was also told to [removed profanity] several times. At this point I told him we would not be coming back at all and he continued with [removed profanity] This whole time he was yelling at me and telling me how I was going to ruin his dinner party. The job was to hang a piece of artwork and not a home emergency. Again this was Friday am after the snowstorm and even though the roads were still not great we showed up to help this customer out. As far as the Wednesday appointment he asked for us to change Tuesday afternoon by email and could not accommodate and we asked if we could keep the original Friday appointment as scheduled. As far as never using us again the feeling is mutual….I would never do any type of work for this customer. Neither I nor my craftsmen do not deserve to be talked to this way.

Terrible, terrible experience. I am mystified by the good reviews. All I needed them to do was install a mailbox. I spoke to someone over the phone who said "it was not rocket science" and quoted my a $125 price. When the guy came over he said it would cost more ($175) because of this or that. He spent the hours on it and left me with a mailbox that sways. NEVER USE THESE PEOPLE. They lied about the price and provided shoddy service.

The customer called us at the end of August to have two jobs completed at her home. One was to replace a mailbox and the other was to remove a trampoline. At the time of her call she asked us for a price would be to install the mailbox. We told her that a ballpark estimate for the mailbox replacement would be $150. This figure is documented on the work order in our computer record. She is incorrect about the price we quoted and about when the work was completed. Her review says the work was done on December 2, 2013; she is wrong, it was completed in the first week of September, 2013. We have been down this road more times than I can count with customers who want us to quote prices on the phone for various projects they want to have done. Usually we tell them we cannot quote projects without seeing them as there are many variables involved in home repair projects. When we do quote prices on small repairs we make absolutely sure we tell customers we are giving them a ballpark number as we are not on site and the rough figure we are giving them may turn out to be +/- $25-$50. We have done this the same way for the last 15 years we have been in business and we did this with this customer exactly the same way as is documented in our computer record on her. Finally, as to the mailbox swaying, if she had made a simple phone call to my office and informed us of the problem we would have been more than willing to send someone out to see what the problem was and correct it. This review is the first thing we have heard or any problem with the work we did. If this customer, or any other, thinks that calling providers liars and writing a bad review on Angie’s List is going to get their problem solved or encourage some behavior change on the part of the provider, they are sadly mistaken

They were very professional and did a good job both times. My attic steps, although basically in good condition, were very old and when their efforts to find a replacement part for me failed, they researched where I might be able to find what was needed online so that I would not have to completely replace the steps. I was successful in finding the part and they were able to fix the steps which are still working very well. Their prices are reasonable, they were prompt and courteous, and I would certainly use them again. I am happy recommend them.

We would like to thank our customer for this nice review. We are called quite frequently for non-functioning attic stairs, and as was the case with this customer, the significant expense of totally replacing the attic stairs can be avoided by just replacing the arms and springs that go on the stairs. We are aware of the common stairs that were installed in many of the homes in our service area and where to get the parts to fix them. Our advice to all Angie's List customers is to check and see if new parts will fix the problem with their attic stairs before incurring the expense of replacing them.

Overall, the work was ok. There were paint drips that I found after they left on the floor and on the back of my bathroom door. Two ceramic tiles in the bathroom was cracked. This job was completed over a year ago and we never received any communication from the customer that there were problems with the job until this review was posted. The invoice we give customers has a “sign off” on the bottom that states “I have inspected the work and found it satisfactory,” and she signed just below this statement. As to cracked tiles we do not know what this is about as the job, per our paperwork, involved painting a bathroom, repairing and painting some doors and installing shelving in a closet. Having said all that, we would like to communicate to all of our customers that if there is any problem with any aspect of the work we do, please give us a call immediately so we can rectify the situation. We are in our office 9-10 hours a day and there is an answering machine to take messages after hours. If anyone has any problem, simply give us a call and we will respond immediately. We may not be perfect in everything we do, but we are perfect in responding to customer concerns about work we have done.

Quality of the work was excellent but I thought there would be more extensive work needed on the wallboard behind the tile. I had this in mind when I agreed to the price. Final price came to $923.75 which was slightly less than his price quoted. He only spent 5 hours doing the work and this comes out to almost $185 per hour. I consider this to be an outrage! The work was done by Rufino Huyhua. I am also not very enthusiastic about the setup of Handyman Connection. I believe they just refer handymen to inquiries they receive who are really not their employees. I even had to supply the materials needed for the job. The handyman came with not tools or supplies. (removed member name), Thank you for the feedback. I will reach out to the Rufino and to get his feedback as well. When we price a job like this it is hard to get an accurate estimate until we open up the walls. We always try and price with the most likely scenario in mind. I believe we initially thought the wall board would need to be replaced. If it was not replaced an adjustment should have been made. Again once I can review with Rufino I will reach out to you and hopefully we can come to a compromise. We have never claimed to be the cheapest but keep in mind part of the reason for this is that our craftsmen are vetted and insured for both compensation and liability and all work comes with a 1 year warranty. We feel there is value added for this piece of mind. I will be in touch. Thanks again, Richard
All repairs went smoothly with constant communication by Rufino during the process. Pricing structure was clearly outlined before work began and changes in pricing due to unknown problems were discussed prior to commencement of work.
Description of Work: Rufino of Handyman Connection diagnosed leaks stemming from old and damaged plumbing in a 90 year old house. He repaired the leaks, replastered the ceiling and walls, and painted all replastered surfaces matching a color from a very old color chart. Rufino was punctual, professional, and very respectful of the elderly tenant and other renters impacted by the plumbing leaks and required repairs.

The handyman sent was polite and efficient. He called the day before to confirm, began the work on-time and finished earlier than I expected. Before re-attaching the doors on the closets he made sure we were happy with the position. If I were to criticize anything, it would be that the handyman mentioned on the phone that he didn't have the correct tools with him to do the job the next day. That made me a bit uneasy. However, he used what he had and got the job done well. I would use them again.

It initially went well and the first job they did a portion of the work. I then called them back at their private number for the 2nd job, since I decided to have them finish the plastering. They also sealed a 10x10 wall too. 2 workers came out and they stayed for about 2 hours. They brought the materials the first that he came out, and brought more than what was needed and they brought more than what was needed the 2nd time too. I had to pay for all of that and I thought they charged too much though. They did leave the extra materials. I have used them about 3 times, but I want to add that I called for one particular thing at point, but they never showed. I was disappointed with the 2nd job, since the first job they did so well.

I am going to request that Angie's List remove this review as we did not do any drywall or plaster work for this customer in 2013, and in point of fact, we have done no work for this customer in 2013. Also, we have no "private number," so if the customer called a private number, we can only assume she called one of our craftsmen directly to do additional work which we have no control over.

Norman Freed called immediately after I spoke with the company and described the scope of the work. He came a few minutes earlier than the appointed time. After surveying the tasks, he decided on a price, which I thought fair, and agreed to. He told me that he needed to leave to pick up his son from school before completing all the jobs, but offered to return either later that evening or the next day, at my convenience. He did return the next day, and completed each of the tasks. He worked quietly and efficiently. Although he gathered the packaging from all the boxes and threw everything in the trash, he did not volunteer to vacuum up the mess left behind (something other workers have volunteered to do). Other than that, I was satisfied with the work.

We called for service because our dryer vent was not working. Prior to the service call, we purchased the materials. The service man called from a blocked # and we could not get in touch with him. He called again on a Sunday and indicated he could come over. He did not tell us we would be charged for an 'emergency' call. So we ended up paying premium $'s to reconnect dryer vent. I explained this to the management and requested we be charged the week rate. They rejected my request and said they would refund $35.00. Angie's list had a $25.00 coupon available for repairs over $100.00. In reality all they agreed to take off was $10.00. What upset me about this situation is the take-it-or-leave it attitude. I have used their services a few times ..this particular call should not have cost me for than $50.00, tops $75.00 The technician was here no more than 10 minutes. I will not be calling them again any time soon.

This customer’s description of these events is simply untrue. The craftsman involved called the customer’s tenant to schedule an appointment to replace the dryer vent and the tenant requested that the craftsman come to his house to do the work on a Sunday. Upon his arrival he wrote up a Labor Estimate describing the work to be done with the cost and the estimate and cost was approved by the tenant by his signature on the Labor Estimate. The tenant was under no obligation to agree to the price, if he thought the price was too high he could have simply rejected the estimate. The tenant did not present the craftsman a coupon, so there was no coupon deducted. Time on the job is not the only factor determining cost. The craftsman’s car, gas, tools and the fact that he is covered by liability and worker compensation insurance all figure into the cost. We believe our charges are reasonable given the costs involved and make no apologies for the amount charged to this customer. When the job was done, the tenant was given an Invoice describing the work done and the price as was agreed to on the Labor Estimate. The tenant signed the Invoice on the approval line, above which it states “I have inspected the work and have found it satisfactory.” Any Angie’s list member wanting to see either of the above documents can contact us and we will be glad to e-mail them copies. As we would not agree to charge her what she thought was reasonable, we have a “take it or leave it attitude??” We have sent the customer a $35 refund which we felt was more than reasonable given the circumstances. She seems to think she knows what we should charge and what is reasonable. Maybe we should tell her what we think is a reasonable rent to charge he tenant and post a negative review on some landlord site if she does not agree and refund he tenant for her “overcharging.”

He was supposed to show up at 9 and didn't show up till 11. He also called us from a blocked number when he said he would be late. He said he would go to Home Depot to purchase the stuff to weatherstrip our windows and doors and said he'd be back to do one window to show us the quality of his work. He never came back. He also mentioned that he was a polygamist with three wives in Jamaica which was weird. During that conversation, he told me something to the effect of "women were selfish" when I asked him about that. He was very rude to me.
Description of Work: He came by and offered to weatherstrip the windows and doors.

Response from Handyman Connection - Westchester County
I tried to reach out to this customer last week to try and rectify this situation. I have not heard back. The fact that the craftsman Mordey was late was not his fault. We are dealing with new software that schedules appointments and there has been a learning curve. He did call me Saturday 8:30 am looking for information and I did not return his call until 9:25 am. The appointment admittedly did not go well. There were 34 windows and 4 doors that needed to be insulated. The craftsman felt he needed to re & re the frames to properly insulate. [member name removed] came back to him and said they had $1000.00 and that was all they wanted to spend. At this point we should have respectfully declined as we would not be comfortable band aiding such a project. Mordey did not call back from the Home Depot...again something we have discussed and I explained regardless as a courtesy we need to call the customer back . The comments about wives and women being selfish were inappropriate. Again something that has been brought to Mordey's attention. When invited into someones home the environment/conversation must be kept on a professional working platform. Mordey is a new craftsman with my company. There is an extensive vetting process that is done when we hire. Mordey was thoroughly checked and references/background came back positive. I will certainly work more closely with Mordey on any future quotes (actually attend appointment) and re-evaluate if we can continue our working partnership. Apologies to [member name removed] as we did not intend to offend her in any way.
