The owner, John, was very nice to work with and does most of the work himself. He gave us a very thorough and reasonable estimate and there were no surprises at the end of the job. We are very pleased with how the deck looks and did turn to John for some suggestions regarding color, whether to add lattice to the bottom and railings. We are very pleased with all of his suggestions. He started the work right after Christmas and did everything possible to get the deck completed as quickly as possible. He worked in all kinds of weather to get it accomplished and left our yard in great shape after everything was completed. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering a new deck. He delivers excellent workmanship at a very reasonable price.

I have been in the construction industry for 30+ years. John is very professional and his work speaks for it self, they even cleanup after their work was complete. Johns knowledge of the materials he used and his recommendations were very helpful. His attention to detail was greatly appreciated. John did not "hit and run" like most contractors do. He stuck with it to the end. We are very pleased and will absolutely use John in the near future.

John arrived as scheduled for the estimate and gave me a price that was right where I hoped it would be. John was very professional and careful to explain what he would do and how the deck would look. I chose a nice gray with a contrasting darker gray for the picture framing that would form the perimeter of the deck. Because someone had fallen down the two steps from the house to the deck, I was clear I needed some demarcation at the edge of each step in order to make it very clear where the step ended. (Green paint on the edge of the new step would not be a good idea.) John pointed out there would be a framing of the darker gray marking the step, so there would be no accidents. I had one prior estimate and was tempted to contract Distinctive Decks the very night John showed up. However, being a careful shopper, I thought it wise to get at least one more estimate, which I did. I called John back reasonably soon and a contract followed shortly afterward. Once the material was delivered to my driveway, John followed shortly afterward and in two days I had a beautiful new deck. John was able to utilize the existing frame for the new composite deck, assuring me it was in A+ perfect condition. This is why the composite deck I wanted was so affordable. John took great pride in every little detail, making sure a corner was built up so the deck was perfectly level and making a base of Fiberon to place under my umbrella stand, to make sure the stand did not scratch the beautiful new deck. John worked hard and answered all my questions as he went along. I could not be happier with my new deck. I would highly recommend John Byrnes of Distinctive Decks for all your decking needs. John's superior attention to detail and his exquisite craftsmanship were by far the best we've seen in a very long time. All costs were included up front, so that there were no surprises. We added a gazebo and other design specifics, and were please with the final design that was submitted. John did the work himself and was on the job every working day, until the project was completed. He was consistently available for questions and consults. We are extremely happy with the final outcome of this project. The deck is beautiful and sturdy. John's building talent is obvious, as no detail was left unattended. All who see it are impressed with the workmanship and design. We would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone who is looking for quality work at a fair price. We considered this project for a long time, as we knew it would be a major one, but are more than satisfied with the entire experience and the outcome achieved. He delivered all that he said he would in a timely manner, in addition to being pleasant and accommodating. He is knowledgeable and precise and we have a magnificent deck to prove it. Too bad there is not an A+ category because John would easily deserve it. First and most importantly John is a great person to do business with and right from our first meeting we believed we were dealing with a quality individual. One of the first things John said was that he wanted us involved during the entire process. We certainly took him up on it because that is exactly what we wanted from our contractor. Initially John gave us design advice and then he guided us through material selection for our deck, pergola and railings. He works with various decking companies so he is not pushing just one product. The result was that we were able to get the decking, railing and pergola in the colors and quality we wanted even though they were sourced from 4 different companies. When it came time for construction to start, John and Jamie were at the house on time and on the day promised. John also went above and beyond during construction. I travel for business and he would call and send me pictures when he had questions or to give me updates. John and Jamie's quality of workmanship and attention to detail is tremendous. They really sweated the details to make our deck look like a million dollars. They also added a few extras that were not in then plans to make our deck more functional. We could not be happier with our experience with him and we know we will be enjoying our deck and pergola for many years to come. You cannot go wrong if you use Distinctive Decks for your deck or backyard feature.

John was open to working with a company recommended by my architect. This company, located out of state, helped create a pergola made of fiberglass.. The new pergola was a "kit" which John felt confident that he could construct. He first had to remove the existing pergola. He removed all the wood, without any damage to the pool house, lawn or surrounding brick work. He had to remove speakers and make sure that the structure was sound prior to reconstructing a new pergola. With John's assistance, we measured over and over again. We discussed and discussed until we were all satisfied that the order was correct. The pergola was delivered to John's warehouse, inspected and then delivered to my home. John built the new pergola and made adjustments where needed. He was punctual, courteous, professional and pleasant. Despite the heat of a few days, he worked without complaint. John did not leave the job until HE was 100% satisfied with his work and then he did not leave the job until I was 200% satisfied! I would whole heartily recommend John for pergola construction, without hesitation. A dear friend had recommended John as her deck, built by him, was beyond magnificent! John's craftsmanship and professionalism is the kind of work, that I will welcome back into my home!

Due to a major foundation excavation project, we needed to replace our landscaping, patio and back yard staircase in to the house. We were leery about going back to patio pavers. John (Distinctive Decks owner) provided us with recommendations and plans for a deck and staircase. He took the time to explain and provide us with various products and options to enhance the back yard. John was understanding of our cost concerns and presented a favorable design that worked into our budget. He was patient as were completing the landscaping project, and as we worked through the permit process with the town. When we learned that we would need two variances from the town, we made the difficult decision not to install the deck. John was very understanding and modified his plan to focus only on the staircase. He was extremely conscientious and scheduled the work immediately as were without stairs for 5 months. John is very reliable and provided quality workmanship. We are very pleased with our new staircase and highly recommend John and his team.

Let me start by saying that this review is long overdue but I wanted to make sure John and his crew got the recognition they deserve. From the beginning, meeting John was delightful, he has a great personality and really listened when we told him what we wanted in our deck design. He was patient with our questions and concerns and had great ideas which made us feel immediately comfortable with him. John personally did the work along with his hardworking assistant, Jamie. They started the job on time, finished on time and came back when they said they would. John was punctual, friendly and professional throughout the job, which to me is a winning combination! His price was fair and in the ballpark with other quotes we had gotten. The deck was built from pressure treated lumber with only the finest pieces used. Like every lot of lumber there are some undesirable pieces, but John refused to use any pieces that he wouldn't put on his own deck and exchanged them new pieces! The deck was one level and had 2 sets of stairs, rails, benches and lattice. The craftsmanship was amazing...better than expected! John also installed lighting on the steps which added a nice touch. Overall it was a very good experience and I would highly recommend this company and can sincerely say you can't go wrong with a professional like John!

The deck came out great . It was Fiberon brand. It was brown decking with black balusters and a dark brown rail. Everybody who sees it says its awesome, gorgeous or beautiful . The lattice under the deck is black. John and his helper came early and put in a full day. The job went smooth and fast. He was there when he said he would be there,and I was impressed how fast the job went. John and his helper are nice guys and I highly recommend Distinctive Decks.

The comments were so positive, I thought we?d found a local company to help us with our deck ? whether it was to shore it up or replace it, I wanted and needed an expert opinion and an estimate for services. I called on 10/18, and left a message. I called again on 10/20, and left another message. Two days later on 10/22, my calls were finally returned with an apology for my having to call twice. I was informed the company was "very busy" working ?on a big job out east? (on Long Island) and returning calls in a timely enough manner was difficult. Understandable, it?s good to be busy and have work in these times, and I appreciated the candor. An appointment was offered and made with me to look at my deck at "5:30ish" (at the end of the work day) the following Monday evening, 10/26. That was a week ago yesterday. The man was a no show, with no phone call to cancel either. I was at home all day and waited for his arrival, I checked my phone often, and I checked my phone for a week after looking for a call to reschedule, but none was forthcoming. Obviously, this company didn?t need my business which certainly doesn?t compare to ?a big job out east,? but it?s too bad the person I spoke to couldn?t be upfront about that and instead wasted my time because whether he believes it or not, my time is just as important as his.

John resurfaced our old beat up cedar deck with maintenance free Fiberon material. Throughout the entire process from quoting the work to completion, John could not have been more engaging or accommodating. In the end, the deck came out beautiful. He even replaced a deteriorating step on the front porch. After the work was done, we decided that the deck lights were the wrong color, and he came back to change them without charge. All in all, we are very happy with the work. It was a great experience.

We interviewed three decking contractors - John of Distinctive Decks was the only contractor that gave us a full range of options - he was prompt, courteous and extremely professional - he was very attentive to local building codes and was a perfectionist. He was quick to provide a copy of his license and certificates of insurance. We are more than happy with the work John did. The prior contractor that installed the decking improperly, left us in a precarious financial situation. John of Distinctive Decks was very empathetic of our situation, he even offered options as to how to sell the prior decking that was not damaged. We would certainly use his company again.

John and Jaime worked diligently and with great detail to complete a great job. John promised us from the beginning that he would treat our deck replacement as if it was his own home's and he did not let us down. We are very particular about the quality and look of the work and John made sure the installation was as close to perfect as possible. Aside from a minor hiccup with a lawn pipe, the job was finished in beautiful fashion and the porch looks awesome. It is solid, level, and looks amazing. We are very happy with the result and job. I would absolutely hire him again for another job and definitely recommend his services. The price was very competitive as well and the entire process was pretty much stress free.

John did a fantastic job through the entire process. He was the one who went through the design of the new deck with my fiance and myself, kept in good contact while the material was ordered and kept me appraised of when the project would be able to start, and it was him there every day for the mere week it took to get the fairly large two tier deck completely done. I was very impressed with the hours they put in each day and how well the finished product came out. The only hiccup was when a part of the ordered material that was sent ended up being wrong, but he quickly re ordered the piece, restructured the payment schedule, and took care of it quickly and easily. One of the best experiences I've had with a contractor, would definitely use again.
