Vigilante Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning

The technician was prompt, courteous, thorough and cleaned up. This Big Deal drain cleaning special was good value.

I'm the condo board president of a small building in Prospect Heights. One Saturday afternoon recently, our building's hot water went out and the super could not get the boiler working again. I called around to a couple of plumbing companies that said they did emergency repair. Vigilante was the first to get back to me and the first to be able send someone on a service call. I called around six on Saturday night and their guy was there in about an hour and half. He diagnosed the problem, fixed an electrical issue, and the boiler was working again by 8 pm. Very professional. They're not cheap--there is a $200 charge for the weekend service call--but they are fast and effective.

We had no heat on Wednesday, 3/6/13 - my husband and his brother checked it out and replaced the thermocouple but still no heat. I called another company on Angie's list and was offered an appointment the next morning but the maintenance person for my mother-in-law's building said he would do us a favor and check it out. He believed it was a part (I think the water regulator?) so he took it off, we went to the store and purchased a new one. He said it wasn't right so I had to take it back but store offered no refunds/exchanges and I was stuck with it ($200). I tried calling the other company but couldn't get through. My husband found Vigilante and they said they would come between 2pm-6pm on Friday. They arrived at 2pm on the dot on Friday and immediately assessed the problem, told me what the maintenance man did wrong, walked me through what he was doing, changed the part which they had in their van and also gave me info about a different part which they noticed was not up to code. I had them change the part that was not up to code because he gave me a good price and after the experience with the boiler I felt I could trust his opinion and advice. I was clueless but Vigilante was so informative and thorough I was very impressed. It was a little pricey but the quality/professionalism/courtesy was well worth it. I felt very comfortable having them in my home.

Repaired leaks coming from bathtubss on parlor floor and second floor co-op units. Replaced numerous pipes under bathrooms. Robert and his colleague were wonderful, extremely professional, and went above and beyond the call of duty; Instead of cutting a hole in the ceiling to access the bathroom in the unit above mine, they worked through an existing (but very narrow) opening from the light fixture, to avoid the need for repairs afterwards. They cleaned up all debris, and were finished in no time at all. We have more work scheduled for other parts of the buliding, and are confident that they will be completed just as professionally.

My water heater started turning itself off intermittently. I called Vigilante to see if they could repair it because my service contract company could not give me an appointment for ten days. Vigilante told me on the phone that it would be $200 for the service call plus the cost of the repairs. It was pricey, but I OK'ed it. Vigilante sent a team right away. They took a look at the water heater and informed me that they did not work on that brand and that I owed them $217 ($200 plus tax). The plumbers did have the decency to try to get the water heater pilot light on and it did stay lit for a while. What kind of plumbers don't work on all brands of water heaters? Mine is an American Water Heater Company Pro-line model. Is this an unusual brand and model? My real complaint is that when I made the appointment, I wasn't asked what brand water heater I had so it could determined if Vigilante could help me before I was charged the $217.

I was able to book them for that week. They showed up on time and were very courteous. They even wear booties to not scuff the floor. They said it would take three hours, and it took exactly three hours. They worked extremely hard and were very good at explaining what they were doing. The price was higher than others, but the service was good and they seemed honest. They didn't try to upsell me when I asked them to look at my boiler quickly. They told me it was fine.

After they did the inspection they looked at the boiler and water heater and they gave me more information that I expected. They really did a wonderful job.

Their estimates for items they said were needed were $200, $300 and sometimes $400 above market price. For example a 1 1/2 angle radiator valve that sells for $84 was quoted by Vigilante as costing $487. Another 1 1/4 angle valve was also estimated as $487 but sells at a plumbing supply store for $62. These companies are using the Big Deals as access to new customer to rip off. I would never use this company.

He was good. They were very thorough and I have no complaints. He explained everything and showed me items that involved the job; he was very accommodating to me. We plan to use him again soon.

I hate having work done in the house. I hate the intrusion, the mess, the general upheaval. I dreaded renovating my bathroom. The professionalism of Vigilante made this dreaded chore a pleasure. I am very pleased. I called Vigilante on Monday and Susan answered the phone by identifying herself and saying, "How can I make you smile today?" That was the tone of my entire experience with Vigilante. The appointment was easy to make and set to my timeframe - 2 days later, with arrival time between 8 & 9AM. When it got to be 8:40AM, Susan called to let me know their "technicians" (2) would be here within an hour, and they were. Before entering my front door, they both put on shoe covers to protect my floors and carpets - a suburban experience Brooklyn. Ha! First, we walked through the the house and they both made recommendations with complete explanations. This was not a sales pitch. After reviewing what I was looking to accomplish in the bathroom, I was given a detailed written estimate. With that, they went to work. They were quiet (for the work they were doing), kept the door closed to contain dirt & dust and even laid down their own throw rugs in the the bathroom and in the hall to catch any spills. Every time there was an option (as in how close to the wall something should be), I was called up and presented with informed choices. Nothing was assumed, no corners were cut. In the end, they were careful not to break tiles, removing as few (2 or 3) as possible to get the job done in the shower. Their work was neat & professional. The area was left clean of debris. I was not given a short shrift. They were here from about 9:30am until about 5pm and took only a lunch break (not in my home). They left my old bathroom faucet, at my request, but hauled my old toilet, sink & vanity away at the end of the day. I didn't even expect that, but am delighted to not have to think about DSNY! Based on the quality of their work, I asked to use their staff tiler to do work on problem areas discovered during their part of the renovation. Their tile guy is going to call me in the morning - and I am not dreading it. I can honestly and without reservation recommend Vigilante Plumbing to everyone on Angie's List. I would like to offer a big thank you to other Angie's List reviewers who recommended them before me. And of course, a big thank you to Angie.

I wanted to get the Honeywell Prestige thermostat and put in a new humidifier. They would say nothing about prices on the phone and wanted a $79 fee to give me an estimate. I think that that is outrageous. I did not need a service call for a repair, I wanted to buy some new equipment.

Overall my experience was great with Vigilante.

Overall it was good. I wasn't initially thrilled with the pricing but it wasn't the worst and he was very professional, which is why I ultimately had him do the work.

I had been having a problem with the spill switch turning off the boiler. I had other heating companies comeby and they changed the spill switch or just pressed the button as the solution. Vigilante assessed the problem and found out that I had 2 chimneys and that there was probably a collapse of brick into the bottom of the chimney and this was causing the back draft. They were the 3rd heating company that came in (with the other 2 having multiple visits) before it the problem was solved. Very good service and assessment of the job.

THEY CAME PROMPTLY AND FIXED IT QUICKLY, HOWEVER THEY DID HAVE TO RETURN A SECOND TIME BECAUSE ONE OF THE JOINTS WAS LEAKING.. THAT HAPPERENED QUICKLY ALSO WITHOUT ANY QUESTIONS OR ISSUES.. THEY WERE VERY FRIENDLY AND RESPECTFUL AND WERE WILLING TO WORK WITH ME ON PRICING WHICH I APPRECIATED..

They could not fix the humidifying system on my heating system. I was not particularly impressed up.

I had a fine experience. They were very professional.

They were good. They were prompt. They provided good service. They are a little costly.

Their service worked fine. They responded quickly by phone even though it was late at night and showed up the next day. They were very efficient. They explained what they were doing before they did anything. They provided us with options. We have not had any problems since.
