the job was completed and it did not look professional. I hired my contractor and he is going to redo the work and put the pipe through the fireplace (it’s a nonworking fireplace). I showed him the bill and he couldn’t believe it either.
Description of Work: I busted the return pipe from the radiators to the boiler, see attached picture. The basement flooded, their technician came and gave me an estimate, which originally totaled $6400.00. I had scanned the list without paying much attention to it, I just wanted my problem corrected, with a crying wife near me. He wanted to bust up the floor next to the boiler claiming that there may be another t underneath it. I told him he didn’t have to because all of the leads are above ground and the one I broke was below. I asked the gentleman (Thomas to go through the fireplace instead of around it. (see attached photo) He refused to do so. Cut the pipe to get an inner diameter for the pipes needed. Then said it was going to be less because the pipe was going to be 1 ¼ instead of 1 ½. He lowered the price after taking out cost of busting up the floor and using a smaller pipe. They workers he had were courteous and worked through the day to finish their work. Once finished he informed me that the radiators had to be bleed at the time the boiler and pipes were filled. I bled 3 myself. I informed them that the radiators upstairs were not being bled. He said to turn on the boiler to get the water upstairs, they left before it finished and the house became extremely hot and I turned off the boiler. I sent an email (see attached) expressing my displeasure in their pricing. I also spoke with this gentleman and told him if he had in his bill anywhere that we could have canceled at any time I would have, but since I signed a contract I was going to live by it. I never thought I would get a reply to my email as the one attached. If you see the respond to my email, I finally stopped responding to them I am not concerned with his overhead, that is not my problem but his, to take advantage of a customer because my hands were tied and he was there. Also he did not stop the leak, the leak had stopped but was dripping, I had a no hub and asked him to install it, because I didn’t want it to continue leaking, he was going to leave the pipe like that. Also note his reference to Starbucks and a corner Bodega offensive. He left the pipes hanging on 2 x 4’s I asked the plumber to strap them, he had two which still would not have been enough. Please see the bill and you will see how we were taken advantage of. The last picture is as it looks like today, my contractor will come Tuesday, cut the pipe and put it through the fire place.

Thank you for your review and honesty. Let us start by saying if there are any issues with the work, we will be more thank happy to come take a look but none of these issues we expressed to us (other than the bleeding price) until here on Angie's List so we did not have the opportunity to address them. We can assure you our pricing is not meant to take advantage of customers in a bind as we have them all in a guide. As we explained via email, bleeding takes time and if you don't know what you're doing can be a problem. As for our prices and overhead, in NYC, overhead must be passed on to the customers as it is a mandatory cost of doing business. Also, there was no derogatory meaning whatsoever by the coffee analogy, just an example of the wide range of prices here in the city. For pricing, once again, we use a national straightforward pricing guide, top technicians, materials, etc. and we cannot answer for a contractor's opinion on what a job should cost as they are not licensed plumbers. To reiterate, should there any issues with our work that were not expressed until here, we would be happy to address them.

The communicaton is excellent. I scheduled an appointment online and received a phone call a day later. They followed up the day of the service with a phone call and even a texted the name of person who was coming outwith an approximate time of arival. The gentleman who came to the door was very friendly and he even put bootie covers on his shoes everytime he entered my home. The problem I have with this company is their costs...and I feel totally taken advantage of after I did some research later that night. I was charged a grand total of $597 for a repair to a leaking bathroom faucet. He quoted me this before so I'm not saying I was totally surprised at the final bill but I was really shocked when he finished in 10 minutes after he explained how difficult and complex the issue he was going to fix was. Later that night I looked up the part he replaced on the Kohler website and from what I can tell it only costs $40. The final straw that led me to write this review and to explain the type of company they are and why I'm now so upset was because he quoted me an extra $300 to fix a leaking hand held shower head which I declined because i wan't ready to pay $1000 for plumbing repairs. He explained it was really difficult job to fix the hand held shower head because he would need to specially order a part or replace the whole shower head system. Gods honest truth, I went on Youtube later that night and figured out how to fix the issue myself because there was a ton of videos on the subject. I really wanted to have these guys work out but the games they play to exhaggerate the difficulty of service to justify their ridiculous prices is criminal.
Description of Work: Needed to fix a bathroom faucet handle which wouldn't fuly turn off the water.

Thank you for your review and honesty. Unfortunately when customers start going on watching how to videos, and looking up part cost, they are completely missing out why they called a licensed professional to begin with. People have NO CLUE what expenses we face as licensed plumbers, especially in service in NYC. Our insurances, training, licensing, time invested, finding qualified respectable employees who earn a fair wage, back office support, advertising, etc. If we skimp on any of those, our performance falls, we would get more complaints. If we send the average plumber out there to your home, the review would be very different based on professionalism, quality of wor, etc. We cannot compete with do it your selfers or unlicensed professionals. We use a national up front pricing guide, best quality materials and employees, warranties, etc. We will continue to strive for excellency and to stand out by providing top notch service for those who appreciate it.

Need to improve customer relations. I called on Friday around 5, right after one of my tenants reported a serious issue. I explained it to the operator who picked up (I wish I remember his name) and explained my issue. He said that someone will call me back, I asked around what time would they call back and could they come same day. He arrogantly repeated "sir, someone will call you within two hours". Well the weekend passed, I got my problem fixed by someone else...come Monday morning at 9:50 and they call me back asking about my call from Friday. Bad way to do business

I am sorry to hear of your issues with reaching us. We did hire a new answering service that takes our calls after hours and hopefully does the right job. We are here in the office 8:30-5pm M-F and do not have weekend hours as of now except for service agreement members. Should you need to reach us and give us the opportunity to make up for your troubles, we'd love the opportunity to serve you. If you would be so kind, if you'd like to call us at 718-648-6838, I'd love to know when you called so I can see if it was our old or new service and address the issues as I have no record of the call. That would help us improve our customer service here as this is a very rare incident I'd like to improve upon.

We've used a Good Plumber's services a couple of times. Both times, Thomas came out to help us with plumbing issues. He's punctual, very friendly, and professional. First time was to detect a leak in our shower pan, so that we can determine where the leak was, in order to get the insurance company to reimburse us for the bathroom repairs. The cost for this work was very reasonable. He basically only charged us for the dispatch fee. The second time was for unclogging a slow draining bathtub in other second bathroom. He did a great job and now our bathroom drain works really well. The cost was $374.57 and that includes the dispatch fee, plus the Angie's list discount. I was hoping that it would be around $200, but I guess plumbing work is always more than you'd expect. No complaints about the service provided though. Punctual, friendly, and professional. I would definitely call them for any plumbing work that I cannot do myself. We trust them, and we think they are great.

The customer service at A Good Plumber was the most organized, thorough, professional and personable that I have experienced among home repair service professionals in Brooklyn. They were so responsive and delightful to work with - it made what could have been a stressful process into a quick and easy get-the-job-done experience. They were punctual, followed up with me without my having to call them more than just once, and helped me coordinate the repair work with my tenants. They also provide great information about their plumbers, so you feel confident in the person who's coming to service your property. I was not present when the work was done, but my tenant was very satisfied and thanked me afterward. All in all, I would enthusiastically recommend this company!

Wanted to get an estimate to to convert an oil burner and hot water heater to multiple gas units with all new piping and radiators. The girl on the phone went into a whole speech about their company and tried to sneak in a $59 charge for the estimate, again I needed no work done just an estimate and she wanted to charge... Stay away from them if you don't feel like being taken advantage of before they even walk through the door.

We never sneak in a charge and always tell our customers about the dispatch fee before we book a job. It takes money to run a reputable, master plumbing firm in new york city and the public has no idea of the costs involved. Almost all the large, reputable companies besides us have dispatch fees. Many people just go through ads and call 10 plumbers for "free" estimates and whoever is the cheapest, is who they will use. As a professional and honest company, we take our time and do things right and cannot afford to fall into that cycle of customers who don't appreciate the value of our time and expertise.

Pretty bad!! We originally called A Good Plumber a month earlier to come out and they never showed up. I actually stayed home from work to make sure I was home to allow the plumbers to gain access. After calling a few times, someone finally called me back. They proceeded to tell me they were sorry but that their plumbers got called away to another job and couldn't make it to my job. They said they would wave the fee for the next visit to evaluate our job. We re-scheduled them to come, this time my wife stayed home to let them into the house. They ended up charging me $565 to cut open drywall to tell me we needed to replace the whole over flow drain line. At that rate, they cost $282.50 an hour just to do an evaluation. I'm not even sure what the $89 fee is for that they waved when they didn't show up the first time. On top of all that, A Good Plumber never even called me back to actually schedule anything or discuss the evaluation I've used them in the past, and although they are pretty expensive, they have done quality work. I"m not sure what happened this time around, but we're going to go with another provider for fixing this issue. Like I said, they've done some really quality work for uis in the past, although very expensive, but this visit was a bust. Maybe next time.

A Good Plumber? No. A GREAT PLUMBER!!!! Omg. From the first phone call with Marianna everything was awesome. It was like talking to a friend who really cared about my plumbing problem. Not only did she schedule the appointment but a few minutes before the guys came I got an email to say they were on their way WITH A PICTURE of the plumber!!!! Can you beat that??? I had to be at work so Marianna kept in touch with me. She gave me an estimate and description of what had to be done and why and asked if I wanted them to continue. I have an old house and wasn't surprised that the pipes under the sink had to be replaced. Since I couldn't be home Marianna kept me apprised of everything that was going on. Not only that but they sent pictures of what they did! When I got home from work tonight I found not only the new pipes but they CLEANED THE SINK , left me a brand new strainer and the sink and everything was better than when I left it. I can't say enough about my experience with A Good Plumber, Inc. they are awesome. I will never call anyone else! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! A "B" for price because I know plumbers are expensive but I couldn't be happier.

Warren, the technician, was excellent at communicating arrival time, upfront about charges, pleasant, neat (he put on booties before entering the apartment without prompting and cleaned up after himself), and in general extremely professional. He seemed to be intelligent and experienced, methodically eliminating possible issues. Once he diagnosed the problem (split pipes on the roof and a faulty shower tray), he quickly replaced the split pipes and promised to get back to us with an estimate for the far more invasive job of replacing the shower tray. Prices were on the higher end, but given the caliber of the techs (and I assume the licensed plumber heading the operation), prices were justified. The dispatch fee ($69) was more reasonable than some unlicensed operators working out of Manhattan. We'd hire Warren again in a heartbeat.

A leaking sewer pipe prompted a call to A Good Plumber Saturday morning. The owner called back to guarantee the reliability of his workers; all licensed plumbers with years of experience, bonded and drug free. The young man who arrived was his son, who very quickly diagnosed the problem and snaked out three sewer lines, making sure they were clear before closing them up again. An enzymatic powder was spread on the floor to destroy sewer bacteria. All in all, in about two hours the problem was totally eradicated, efficiently and tidily. I totally recommend this company.

Bill Wiener was my technician. He was very knowledgable, and professional and an over all pleasure to deal with. He even put those little booties on his feet so he didn't muck up my floors which he gets extra points for. He quickly assessed problems with both my toilets. One just needed a part and the other needed to be replaced. But he did give me the option of an estimate to fix it, instead of replacing it all together. He fixed the first toilet on the spot and we made an appointment for the next day for him to come replace my old toilet. He was on time and did the work quickly, cleaning up afterwards before he left. Plus I liked the fact that they took credit cards and worked with iPads. It made everything quicker and easier. Would def call this company again!

I already have one estimate from a plumber who told me that the radiator valve is stripped and needs to be replaced (it's been patched multiple times already). That plumber gave me an estimate of $390 to replace the valve. A Good Plumber told me that simply to patch it would be $400. Then they charged me $75 for the estimate. Ridiculous.

Unfortunately this review is not accurate and we'd love the opportunity to address this. For the record, this customer was called a few hours after our technician was there to see what the issue was and how we can address and help her. We were rushed off the phone and told we would receive a call back. We received no call back but instead, a customer hiding behind a bad online review. The call came in for a leaking radiator angle valve. We always have a dispatch fee, which is explicitly told to all customers that this is a separate fee for a trained professional to come out and assess the problem. Upon arrival our technician diagnosed the valve as indeed dripping. As we always do, we presented the customer with options...repair or replace. Not all customers want to simply replace something that is not 100% necessary. They may want to attempt the repair first. The technician explained he was confident the repair would work if the customer wanted to try and we even give a 1-year warranty on our work. She felt like we were pushing her for a patch job, which is not the case. We were simply presenting her with option and then she could make a decision and of course presented the option of replacing as well. As for the price, this is where it is 100% inaccurate. She claims the estimate for the “patch job” was $400 plus the $75 dispatch fee. Maybe this was a misunderstanding but we have her signature on our estimate and this is a complete falsity! The estimate was $69 for the dispatch fee and $299 for the repair plus tax, which we do not pocket. It was not $400 for the repair and then the dispatch fee. It was $299 plus the dispatch fee. Her other plumber, who quoted her $390 for a replacement is actually in line with our price for a replacement which was $399. Why she chose to take this route with us I am not sure when she at least rated us punctual, responsive and professional. Maybe she was having a bad day or misunderstood us, but at least give us the opportunity to clarify or explain. I hope after reading this, she will see we were presenting her with a choice and we would have done whatever she wanted to make her happy.

He arrived when he was scheduled. I thought the problem was a disconnected or clogged drain tube from my washer dryer. Jose thought it was more likely the 2 inch drain and not the tubing of the washer. He disconnected the tubes and blew out the drain pipe without having to move the machine out of place. He then brought in a hose to be able to run hot water through to make sure there was no leakage. Total time was about 1 hour. The company has a price list on a tablet that they show you before the work is started so you can agree or not. There is a consultation fee of $109 for coming and evaluating. It was worth it. Jose was clean and wiped everything up.

Now that our renovation is finished, I am finally getting around to reviewing the plumbers and contractors that we worked with. So the reviews will be about work done in the early to mid part of 2014 We had a shower pan that had a leak, and the water spilled under the floors into the adjoining 2 bedrooms. This caused major water damage that required hardwood floor replacement of both of our bedrooms and gut renovation of our bathroom. We filed a claim with our homeowner's insurance, and they were putting obstacles in our way, making it difficult for us to get the needed funds to repair the damage. Before digging up the shower pan, they wanted proof that it was the shower pan that was leaking, not some pipes, etc. So I called the Good Plumber and Thomas came out to help us. We also called a technician from another company that deals with water damages and had access to infrared imaging device. Thomas filled up the shower pan and ran the water, while the technician with the infrared device looked for the source of the leak. After a while, they were able to see the leak originating from the shower pan. Mission accomplished. Thomas from Good Plumber was great! He was professional, extremely friendly, honest, and very knowledgeable. Their prices are reasonable, and they are very responsive. Next time we have any plumbing issues, we will call Good Plumbers before calling anyone else.

Dan was the plumber - he was early on the first day (he called to say he was on his way), was very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. He was unable to do the work on that day because the valves in my apartment were broken and it would've been unsafe to do the work without shutting down the water. We rescheduled and he did the faucet replacement for me and replaced the valves for the building. He did a great job and the faucet is a much higher quality faucet than I had before. It works perfectly now with no leaks. Mariana in the office was a pleasure to work with, very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend and would use them again.

Jose came,?appeared to be?very nice, but never replaced the rubber washers for the meter that National Grid had left. I offered them to him, but he refused to use them. He began to downgrade my gas pipes, even though they still look new, and Nat Grid said my gas pipes were in good condition. I stood my ground in relaying to both Bill and Jose that Nat Grid stated that this was a simple job of replacing the sealant or compound at the pipe joint, and replacing the thermocouple. Bill told me I should wait for his father the 'master plumber' to look at everything on Monday, November 3, 2014, before they proceed to do anything else. (THAT'S A WHOLE WEEK!) The 'job', Bill stated could run me upwards of 3,500.00! Bill kept?using Jose to search?for things that was not to his perfection. All I wanted was heat from an older model Crown boiler, not for some plumbing company to pad the bill by trying to remove my pipes. I had a master plumber, who sells boilers, and owns his own?plumbing?supply store look at the boiler. I also provided him with all the extra details that Bill gave me.?The gentleman?agreed with Nat Grid.?I am upset that Bill would try intimidate an older woman such as myself into giving him 300.00 to check for a gas leak that Nat Grid had already checked. On top of all that he used titles of different people that could come to my house and cause me trouble! At present, I am sitting in a cold house, with no heat, hot water, or cooking gas, and elderly tenants, one of whom has Agent Orange. I am also raising my 14 year old grandson who has a disability. HE NEEDS TO DO THE RIGHT THING! How dare he offer to keep the 300.00 and we part as friends? He needs to complete what was started or refund my money.
Description of Work: Never performed the system maintenance that I paid for, which was 214.00. Charged 300.00 for a service that National Grid had already provided. Nat Grid tested my whole line for gas leaks, found one and shut the gas off.

Response from A Good Plumber Inc
At A Good Plumber, we believe in high levels of customer service and unfortunately long gone are the days where the customer is always right. We will bend over backwards for our customers and go above and beyond as we tried to do with this customer. The disregard for our reputation and diligence and unappreciated help we offered and explanations as to her problems are still leaving us all scratching our heads. While as we said we do pretty much do anything to make sure our customers are satisfied with us, we do have principals and backbone and will not simply roll over and take this undeserved treatment. We here at A Good Plumber are completely appalled by the false allegations and exaggerations in this review and if they continue or the customer continues calling, leaving these false reviews and harassing us, the appropriate legal channels will be taken. For those who want to hear what happened, we will gladly answer her points here below. She first starts by saying we never performed the service on her boiler which she paid for through Angie’s List. That is 100% correct…we cannot perform a boiler service when a customer calls National Grid for a gas leak and they shut and lock their gas meter. You cannot run a boiler with no gas nor service it. The customer called us for a routine boiler service via Angie’s List. We set up the appointment for the following week. In the, interim she called back saying she had a gas leak and called National Grid to investigate and they found a leak and shut and locked her meter. For the record, as licensed master plumber’s in NYC, we have multiple NYC codes to follow and apparently this code is the “scare tactic” she alleges. She says all we had to do is fix the leak, which is a “simple job” according to her and National Grid would come turn her gas on. That is unfortunately not how it works. Before we even set the appointment, we told her gas is very serious and we have protocol to follow and explained how it will go and gave her estimates on the initial work, permits, etc. before we took the trip out there. The protocol is to file an LAA for repair and we take responsibility for the entire gas line as far the city is concerned so we need to test the whole line. If we miss a leak and just do what the customer wants, we are completely liable. Once we pull this permit, we can proceed with our repair. At that point, we set-up a self certification inspection with NYC to come look at the pressure test and they sign off all is well and no more leaks. If they don’t show up for the inspection, we as master plumbers are allowed to do so. From there, National Grid will get notification and come unlock the gas meter. We cancelled appointments to get out ASAP for her because she told us about her elderly, veteran tenant. Upon looking and seeing the leaks, we called for our permits. I hope most people understand we need to do our own tests and not what the homeowner feels we should do because we are ultimately responsible for their safety. As we were on the line to order the permits, it turns out she has an ILLEGAL boiler and water heater not filed anywhere within the city records. We cannot order a permit to repair a line going to something that as far as the city is concerned, does not exist. When we explained this to her, obviously she was not happy. This was not a scare tactic as she alleges but we don’t make the rules…the city does. In order to correct this we told her she needed to file some paperwork to legalize the boiler. For the record our office staff helping her have never met this person and have no idea if she is 30 or 70, so by her saying we are trying to take advantage on al elderly person is a bogus claim. Upon looking at the boiler, would you believe that the same unlicensed plumber who illegally installed it without filing for it also did so incorrectly with numerous code violations that would not pass an inspection? If the city showed up to check this with our name and license verifying it was ok, we’d look like fools because we need to take responsibility for that boiler. We told her there were numerous violations and needed to be upgraded to meet the new codes. Again not our rules but the city’s. We went out of our way once again to speak directly to a city inspector to verify there was no easier way to get her gas turned on faster and to triple check this code. He said it was wrong and it had to be done and even explained why which we passed on to her. We called her backed explained this again to her and again she was not happy. She stressed urgency and we at this point suggested she may be able to find someone who can get their quicker and possibly even less expensive than us because we were already booked for the week. She decided to wait for us and we had an appointment set for this coming week. Then the review came in which left us all scratching our heads. Apparently she spoke to another “plumber” who told her were were wrong and scaring her. We will put our reputation on the line by saying: we will guarantee this “plumber” did not check and take the extra steps we did to verify the legality of this boiler and water heater and if he did it would clear as night and day we are following the city’s protocol to safely get this customer comfortable again. Obviously she is stressed and inconvenienced by having no gas to heat, take a warm shower or cook with but it was shut and locked before we even arrived…but chose to scathe us and and make these false accusations is completely appalling! We have decided in good faith to credit this customer back for the service we never did because after this review we are not going to service her. We also credited the $300 back to her for the deposit to get started on ordering these permits for her. We hope our A and even B reviews will be looked at as we proudly close in on 120 A’s as we will continue to service our customers the right way and ensure their satisfaction.
