Residential & Commercial Moving - boxes, packing, unpacking materials, short & long term storage, furniture, high valued artwork, high tech electronics, antiques & pianos
They were very professional and great for our needs. They actually sent a guy over and delivered empty boxes to our apartment a week before our move for free. Then, when they showed up, they shrink wrapped everything we had packed, and packed up our truck very well. The guys were funny and very nice, professional too. It worked out very well and I definitely would recommend them.
Description of Work: I hired these guys to move my furniture from a high rise in Manhattan to the moving truck I rented.

i was in a jam, in that my "closing" on the purchase of my new place had been delayed and delayed by incompetent mortgage people, banks, real estate doofusus, etc. meanwhile, I faced a deadline in yielding the place i had been renting...Rock and a Hard Place Time.. I COULDN't move until the closing happened and i HAD to quit the premises i had been renting... the Moving Man people hung in with me as I had to keep delaying the move again and again, as the closing kept being put off for one petty reason or another...finally, at the very last minute with the ink still wet on the purchase check, Moving Man swung into action and got my things out of the old place and into the new apartment..... i couldn't be there to supervise, as I was at the closing, surrounded by lawyers, real estate people, mortgage brokers, bank representatives and other incompetent clueless jerks all of whom had their hands in my pockets waiting for their automatic percentage of my deal.. a friend met the movers, and they were competent, speedy careful and so very very reliable and helpful.. Bravo!
Description of Work: they were terrific.. Above and Beyond.. the good experience began with their terrific "intake" phone discussion....really professional, helpful, smart, and reliable.. i hope never to have to move again (hate it).. but i would hire them in a shot! how terrific to find such good service at a reasonable cost.

The movers were punctual and courteous. Nothing was damaged in the move. The move was completed at the estimated cost. The movers were slower than others I have hired, but they did the job for the expected cost. My only minor complaint was that when I tried to pay with American Express the inside guy at the company claimed that it did not go through twice. I asked him to run it again and he said it did not go through again. I called American Express and they said that no charge request had been turned down - none had come through. I finally had to get an American Express representative on the phone at the same time as the business person at Moving Man and it suddenly worked. This could have been an innocent mistake but some merchants try to keep you from using AMEX because it costs them more - it's called suppression. I had to put it on that card because it's my business card. Anyway, after the move the same guy called me a couple of times pressuring me to write a review for Angie's List. I did not particularly appreciate that either and it crystallized my unease with the end of the transaction. I did not want to write a less than completely positive review because the moving itself was done very professionally and exactly as it was supposed to be. But Angie's list kept asking, too ... so here I am.
Description of Work: Moving man came to move furniture and files from a home office to an external office. Probably the equivalent of moving a studio apartment but without the bed.

I was very pleased with the level of service, the men who did the move, the care they took, the equipment they used, and the price came in under the estimate. I recommend them.
Description of Work: This was a small move to a studio apartment. Moving Man returned my call and prepared an estimate right away. After we arranged the schedule, the apartment asked to change the move in time. Moving Man accomodate the change with no problem. Moving Man also coordinated insurance requirements directly with the apartment. The moving men did arrive 2 hours late due to a prior move delay, but Moving Man kept me informed of the delay and even provided a cell contact for after hours. Despite the delay, the men were fast, professional and careful, and got everything moved within the time allowed by the apartment. Don't forget to tip for a job well done.

The men were swift and efficient. They even anticipated the alternate side of the street parking regulations in this area. They were prepared with extra boxes, furniture wrap and other items. Delivery went just as smoothly. They paid attention to directions and placed each piece of furniture in its proper place without any mishaps. Good Job.
Description of Work: After meeting with Jon Stout, we were sure we had made the right decision to use Moving Man. Jon Stout was very knowledgeable and professional. The move itself went very smooth. The moving men showed up on time (were faster than we expected), wrapped and moved the furniture without any problems. I have already recommended them and I will continue to recommend Moving Man.

The company was awesome both times. They came to give us quotes both times when they were supposed to. The movers were great both times. Wrapped everything up and took excellent care of our goods. Both of the moving teams were so polite and respectful of our home and our property. I would recommend them to anyone who wants GREAT movers at a competitive price. I have to give a special thanks to Ivan and his great team of movers! They were real professionals.

I was in a bit of a pickle as another moving company cancelled on me a week or so before I was to move. I turned to Angie's List (should have done that initially) and found Moving Man, Inc. I called them right away and they dispatched a fellow who assessed my belongings and gave me a quote. We then scheduled the move, which unfortunately had to be postponed but Moving Man, Inc.accommodated my schedule with ease. The day of the move was not only easy, quick and professional (Ivan and his crew did a great job) but they came in w/in a 100 USD of their (already low IMO) estimate. I have already recommended them to two friends and recommend them here. Thanks Moving Man!

From start to finish, they were professional and efficient.
Description of Work: Moving Man movers came a week or two before our move to give us an estimate and then came back to provide us with the boxes they thought we'd need. They gave us the right amount of boxes and just a little extra just in case. On the day of the move they came on time, ready to get to work. They moved all our boxes and furniture carefully and efficiently down our elevator into their truck. They packed up our art with extreme care and loaded it up as well. They drove it to Brooklyn and unpacked it and moved it into our new space and unwrapped the furniture they had so carefully wrapped in order to protect it.

The week of July 4, my move fell through with another moving company and that company kindly connected me with Moving Man, which was able to schedule the move. The general manager himself, Jon, scheduled my move over the phone, and I was happy with the schedule, price and the Angie's List discount he offered. From there, one of the schedulers (Barrett) took over coordinating the details. The building I was moving into had a strict policy for move-ins during a certain time frame and with properly insured movers, which I explained up front. The building had previously rejected a different moving company I'd reserved because their insurance coverage wasn't sufficient, so I asked Barrett to submit the certificate of insurance promptly so that, if there was any issue with the building, I could find a plan B for my move. Barrett assured me that he would submit the certificate the next morning -- and the next and the next, as I inquired each day leading up to the move -- until on Friday morning, the day of my move, I heard from my building manager that they'd received nothing and therefore couldn't give me the key to my apartment. As I was driving from VA to NY to meet the movers, I had to call Barrett and get him to fax the form (he said he'd done it the night before) at the last minute. I do realize that moving companies deal with these types of building requirements every day, so it may not seem urgent to them. However, my ability to move in was dependent on that insurance confirmation, and it could have been an easy, stress-free process if the document had been submitted when it was promised and I had been notified of its submission. The first part of my move (a furniture pickup in VA) began fine. The driver (Kelby) called to ask if he could meet me earlier, which was terrific. However, he was alone (there was a woman with him who seemed to be a family member, but not a mover). No colleague was sent to meet him to help move my things and load the truck. Kelby was skilled, but I don't know how the company expected one person to lift large furniture alone. As a result, I had to help him carry the larger furniture pieces out of the apartment. What if I were injured or elderly and couldn't have helped him? Not to mention that I wouldn't have hired movers if I expected to move things myself. Then came the second part of my move (meeting a different driver/movers in NY to move me from one apartment to another), scheduled approx. 1p.m. At 1:45p.m. I hadn't heard anything, so I called to check in. Eric said the moving team had finished their prior move and was on its way. An hour later, at 2:45p.m., I called to check in again. Eric said he couldn't get in touch with the driver and would call me back. Twenty minutes later, at 3:05p.m., I hadn't heard from Eric, so I called yet again. Eric said the team was stuck in traffic. An hour and a half after he'd told me they were on their way? At this point, I was stressed and upset since there was now only 1.5 hours to wrap my furniture, load the truck, and move me into the new building before the cut-off -- and the movers hadn't yet arrived. Though the error was in the lack of communication, Eric took no responsibility, was unapologetic and flippant with me. Had he kept me updated throughout the afternoon -- or had the driver do so -- and had given me confidence that the movers would be able to complete my move in time or handle any issues with the building, it would have been fine. The team of three movers who ultimately arrived were very friendly and remarkably completed the move in time, but sadly at the expense of a very stressful day. The Monday following my move (7/11), I called to leave a message for Jon, the general manager who'd booked my move, to praise the drivers and movers but explain the poor scheduling and communication that negatively affected my move. I expected him to want to make amends with his customer and resolve the issues from affecting future clients. However, after a week without hearing from Jon (7/18), I called to make sure he'd received my message, and Brendan assured me that he had. On 7/20, I received a call from Brendan asking how my move went. I reminded him that I'd left a message for Jon but hadn't heard back, and I told Brendan the story of my move. He said that a single driver travels on interstate moves, but that a local mover is supposed to meet the driver to help with lifting/loading. When I asked what they could do to compensate me for the absense of the second mover and my having to step in, he said he'd like to give me a refund but doesn't have the authorization; only Jon does. I asked what more I could do to actually talk with Jon, and was informed that he's "hard to get through to." I left a voicemail for Jon reiterating my interest in speaking with him and explaining that I'd waited these two weeks to submit my Angie's List report to give him the chance to rectify the situation first, and that I'd wait to hear from him until Friday (7/22). On Friday, I received another call from Brendan saying Jon would "not be able to give [me] a call" and "decided he couldn't take any money off" my move because he'd charged me the "bare minimum" already and "wouldn't make anything off the move." Brendan further explained that the first mover said I "volunteered" to move the furniture, and questioned me intricately on what exactly I carried and whether or not I just carried it or lifted it into the truck. Now two weeks after the move, I am shocked that Jon never took responsibility to call me himself and hear the story firsthand. I would have been glad to speak with Jon and Kelby, the mover, concurrently, to resolve any conflicts with what occurred. The unfortunate aspect of this is that it could have gone perfectly well with a bit of communication and integrity. The actual drivers and movers I met were kind, professional, and pleasant to work with, but the administration/management falls short. I believe in paying for the work that was done, and I also expect not to pay for what was not done. I also expect to be treated with respect and not condescension. As someone from a family of small business owners, I believe a company's profits should not come at the expense of treating customers well. A call from Jon and some refund would have earned my satisfaction and compensated me for what was not handled properly.

Response from Empire State Moving
1) In the moving business when you get a call of distress from another moving company, naturally you want to help the company help its customer. At the end of the day on July 5, we received such a call from Gulliver’s Movers in Arlington, VA, whose customer needed some small last minute services which Gulliver’s was unable to perform. 2) As a courtesy to them and to their desperate customer, I called her to offer help and to pick up where Gulliver’s Movers left off. 3) The customer needed moving help both in McLean, VA and in Manhattan and we are one of the few companies in a position to deliver bargain-priced help on short notice. 4) After she described both pickups, I quoted $500 for the small pickup in McLean, VA and $350 for the small move in Manhattan. 5) I explained that I could not confirm the McLean, VA pickup at that time and would not be able to confirm it until July 6 or July 7 at the latest, in case she wanted to look for another mover who could guarantee a short – notice pickup. 6) I also said that I would need a $100 deposit for one or both of her moves leaving the choice to her. As it was the end of the day, we gave her until the next day to consider our offer to help. 7) There was no pressure and there was no mention of an Angie’s List discount at that time. 8) There are several reasons why this is the case despite her claim in her report that I offered her an Angie’s List discount. 9) She never identified herself as an Angie’s List customer in her first phone call to our office. 10) We don’t favor our Angie’s List customers with discounts over our non-Angie’s List customers. 11) We treat all of our customers the same by offering the same service, with the same affordable pricing, and sharing the same secrets to saving money on moving costs. 12) Our priority was in helping her meet her moving needs, for which we would charge her accordingly. We were not competing for her business so why would a “discount” or price incentive be appropriate? 13) Later that night in an email sent to us after our office was closed she did identify herself as an Angie’s List customer along with the certificate of insurance information needed for her new building in Manhattan. 14) All of this was premature, however, because at 6:19 PM the time of her email, she had not paid the $100 deposit required to confirm her move. 15) Next morning she followed through with the deposit but we could not commit to her McLean pickup because our closest driver along with his wife was unloading that day in Atlanta, GA and could not be dispatched to McLean, VA until after he was unloaded. 16) We wanted her to have plenty of opportunity to employ a plan B by finding another mover if she were not comfortable with our inability to commit to a pickup time in McLean. 17) Later that day we gave the driver the new dispatch instructions and then confirmed with the customer on 7/7 for her same day pickup in McLean, VA. 18) We feel the customer took advantage of our willingness to help her because she under reported the pickup items in her McLean apartment. 19) On July 5 she had only five boxes and one standard sofa to be moved from the apartment in an elevator building. We planned in our office our driver would be able to pickup the standard sofa by himself and/or with his wife. 20) The $500 we quoted her only included this amount of service for this amount of furniture. She didn’t tell us at anytime that the sofa was not standard. 21) It was a big sofa, not a standard sofa. (See item #330 on attached inventory signed by customer) 22) She didn’t tell us we had to pack her three boxes because by the time we arrived she had only packed two. (See items 321, 322, 323 on attached inventory identified as “CP” Carrier Packed or Mover Packed). 23) And she didn’t tell us she was adding five more items (armchair, side table, end table, ironing board, mirror) to her six-item move (five boxes and a sofa). 24) An honest person would not take advantage of the people (me, my office staff, Kelby the driver and his wife) who were trying to help her when she requested minimum service for a minimum amount of moving. And then she doubled her minimum. 25) Yes, we would have charged more money for the more service that she needed. 26) And we would have arranged for a second mover to meet the driver in McLean. 27) Or we would have cancelled the job altogether because she was not offering to pay us for all the service she now ordering. 28) In any case we did not charge any more money for this extra service. 29) We dispute her statement beginning, “As a result, I had to help him carry the larger furniture pieces out of the apartment. What if I were injured or elderly and couldn’t have helped him? Not to mention that I wouldn’t have hired movers if I expected to move things myself.” 30) Kelby asked her not to help him and his wife. 31) It’s company policy not to employ the customer in her own move. 32) Her motives are questionable in stating our office staff and management were not responsive to her moving requirements. As per her conversation with out office, her certificate of insurance was faxed to building management on 07/07. (See attached fax coversheet and certificate of insurance). 33) It’s standard operating procedure for management companies to misplace certificates of insurance on 7/7, for moves occurring on 7/8, so we re-faxed it on 7/8. 34) We question her motives again in stating, “However, my ability to move in was dependent on that insurance confirmation, and it could have been an easy, stress-free process if the document had been submitted when it was promised and I had been notified of its submission.” 35) The one mistake by our office was made by Barrett who did offer in my name an “Angie’s List discount” to the customer when she called back on July 6th. 36) Even though it is against company policy to provide such a discount, I reluctantly approved the offer when I learned about it on July 10. 37) This customer was given bargain pricing, an unwarranted discount and is now requesting an undeserved refund. 38) Based upon the unwarranted $89.50 she has already received, we believe she is requesting a refund of $0.50 more 39) We will double that amount and refund her $1.00. 40) Opportunists deserve little more and not a 2nd courtesy phone call.

They broke the leg off an antique chair, damaged a valuable antique armoire and an antique dresser. They paid me for the chair after many months of chasing them, they said they would repair the dresser, then returned it with missing parts, and never fixed the armoire. I would never recommend them to anyone and would never use them again. This was a terrible experience.

I looked up where they were located. The guy was here at my house once. He moved the cabinets up to my daughter's house. He was least expensive than all the people I contacted. He was the closest to where my daughter lived. He knew exactly where she was located and it wasn't a problem. He came in easily with the lowest bid. I've read about him and I was okay. I wasn't even here when he came so I didn't meet him. My one door was here and the other one was out of the house. He picked it up and delivered it in good condition. He didn't have a huge truck with big cabinets. I didn't meet him; I only spoke to him on phone. He knows his business. His price was the best. When I moved, there wasn't anything broken. He was here and got the things done. He followed through on his estimate. He was here on time without any problem.

I called them and made an appointment for and estimate for 4pm 6 days later. 15 minutes before 4pm the day of the appointment the guy called and said that he couldn't come because he was delayed and that he had to give an estimate to his 5pm app't, who was moving in a week. My move was in a month, but i still wanted to finish with this part of the project. He offered to come 4 days later,. I asked him if he could come after he finished this other person and he said he couldn't and that he couldn't come sooner. That was the end of that.

I thank the member for using Angie's List to contact our company. It's true we had an appointment to meet at 4 pm but as my previous appointment ran overtime, I called the member to try to reschedule our June 9 appointment for another day because the member was planning to move sometime in the future at the end of July. When she insisted I come on June 9 or not at all, I realized she was not planning to use our services and was strictly shopping for a free estimate from us. We give free estimates in anticipation of performing the work and we absorb the cost of the estimate in the cost of the work. But in this case, I quickly calculated that the cost of our "free" estimate was going to cost our company $200 ($13 in tolls, 68 round trip miles (3 hours during 4pm-7pm rush hour) and 1 hr on the premises tabulating the estimate and the balance in fuel, vehicle depreciation and employee compensation). It was clear we were not going to work together and it was clear our company should not spend the $200 in giving away our services. I'm sorry the member was disappointed but it is unrealistic in a business negotiation to expect one party to absorb all the expense while the other party is rigidly uncompromising. We wish the member well on her upcoming move even though we will not be performing it. Jon Stout, General Manager.

Glad I looked on Angie's List.. Another company that I had called before Moving Man (NOT from Angie's List ) couldn't even receive/open an email with details for a Certificate Of Insurance that the new building required (not to mention insinuating that I didn't know how to use a computer). Overall, this company made a very stressful process easier, and were professional about it.
Description of Work: Was moving from one bedroom apartment. Estimate was done about a week before the move. The person that was sent over was very knowledgeable and courteous. The same man stopped by a few days before the move to drop off boxes. This was very helpful. I had planned to have everything packed by the time the movers arrived the morning of the move, which didn't work out. The workers arrived on time, and helped to box up the remaining items. Items were wrapped and packaged well. Even with the extra work, the move took only an hour longer than the estimate.

I have used Moving Man Inc. service a couple of times in the past. They have done an amazing job. They were efficient, courteous, and helpful. They were very comfortable to work with. They were very cooperative. I can't say less about them. It was a big job and they managed it very professionally. The price was reasonable. My overall experience with them has been very good. I would definitely use their service in the future too.
Description of Work: I used Moving Man Inc. service in February.

The experience could not have been improved. From the punctuality and professionalism of the estimator to the movers. My move went through flawlessly and supper efficiently. I would use them again and have recommended them to friends who are also using them for their move.

I was given an in-person estimate with a courteous, pleasant gentleman who came on time and seemed thorough. I was told the job would require three men, one of them needed to stay with the truck, since it was a busy neighborhood, even though it was Christmas eve and may not be so busy. (I only mention that because I was disappointed at the raise in rates from what I had estimated based on a two-person job, having chosen them due to their reasonable rates.) Any of the office phone contacts I made were helpful and friendly. On the scheduled day of the move, the mover called me an hour before the scheduled time to tell me they were at my office building. When I told them our appointment wasn't for an hour, but I would get over there as soon as I could, they checked, said I was correct and told me not to rush; they will wait for me to come at the appointed time, which is what occurred. The movers packed and moved everything efficiently and professionally. They were accommodating in placing the area rug in my apartment partially under the piano (see above), which I greatly appreciated. When they brought the furniture to the new office, I told them unpacking was included, as per my phone conversation with the office. They didn't think so, but then checked the written material and said unpacking was included. They were okay with that job, although they seemed a bit rushed. When I was asked to sign at the completion of the job, I noticed they did not credit me for the $100 deposit I left with my credit card over the phone. I was told by one of the movers I was not charged for it, so I signed for the full amount. When I got my credit card statement they had charged me for a $100 deposit plus the full amount of the move. I called them and was told the person who takes care of that would call me back. They didn't call back, so I called again and was told that he would credit my account the $100. My credit card bill was due, so I had to contact the credit card company to temporarily "dispute the charge," so I wouldn't have to pay it. The credit company told me to call them back when my account is credited. So, all of that is kind of a pain. Finally, I noticed a small picture frame was cracked, after the movers left. I hadn't closely looked at all my frames before the move, so I can't say it happened at that time, although I suspect it did. Overall, I think the movers did a good job. Most of the problems that occurred had to do with paperwork, either the movers reading it carefully or the office being accurate and with communication between the office and the movers.
Description of Work: Moved one room of office furniture to another office, 2 blocks away. Also, brought an area rug from original office to my home, also within 2 blocks, and cleared off piano items, so they could lift it slightly in order to place the area rug partly underneath. They packed the furniture and photos and unpacked everything.
