Across the board, everyone I dealt with was courteous, responsive, knowledgeable and professional. I can highly recommend Moving Man, Inc.
Description of Work: I needed to ship 6 pieces of furniture from Queens to San Francisco on behalf of relatives who were moving there. Subsequent to my email to 3 companies via Angie's List, all left me a phone message. One did not ship to California, of the other two, I contacted the company which had given me a rough estimate of the cost as I had requested, MOVING MAN. I dealt with Mr. Brendan Grant, Moving Consultant. He was very professional and knowledgeable and answered all my numerous questions. I had a number of phone conversations with him on the details and he was always courteous and ready to respond and explain. My relatives' move had been decided rather suddenly, so I needed to have quick action. We arranged for a pickup of furniture in Queens on April 25. The pickup crew consisted of two persons who were punctual, courteous and very professional. Thereafter, delivery was estimated between May 2 and May 16. I was told that once the shipment is loaded on a truck, they could communicate with the driver in case I had any last-minute concerns; I did subsequently speak to the driver who assured me (as I had been told before by Mr. Grant) that he would telephone the receiving party in San Francisco 48 hours before delivery. Subsequently, the driver called the receiving party in SF around May 2 and they set delivery for today, Monday May 6th. The delivery took place as promised on May 6, and my relative who received the shipment just sent me a message informing me that the delivery men were excellent and the furniture arrived in perfect condition.

We packed our own stuff, so they just moved everything after we've packed it and then delivered it. Our experience with them was OK. We had better service with them the prior time that we moved with them. We have moved with them three times, so they did well for us.

I called Moving Man for a cost estimate, and a representative (John Stout) came to see the items I wanted to move. Among the items I showed him were two large, sturdy plants, a large, empty terracotta planter, a few books, 5 pictures and about 6 boxes of other items. I accepted the estimate , and two men arrived at my office on the designated morning. The first thing they did was try to sell me additional insurance. I thought this would be a good idea as I cared very much about the items being moved. The additional insurance cost $50. They packed the open items and began moving them to their truck. However, while moving items, one man took my tall plant and pushed it through a doorway, ripping off the top of the plant. I witnessed this myself and saw that he did not even look to see if it would clear the doorway. There were four large, beautiful peaks on the plant and one was now ripped off. They collected the rest of the items to take them down to the truck. I went with them down to the truck and was quite surprised to find that the truck that was sent was not a truck but a smaller van. I was surprised because I had specifically shown the estimator the plants to be moved. The movers, in packing the van, forced the top of the plant against the ceiling of the van and ripped a second peak off the plant so that it was hanging by a thread. I called the Moving Man office immediately and told them what had happened. I told them I had had that plant for 12 years and was quite upset. The immediate response I got was that they were not responsible. He said there was some disclaimer that certain items were not covered. I told him I had seen no such thing in anything I had signed and I had read all the contracts completely. He said it was contained in some booklet inside a folder (unrelated to the documents I signed). My response was, I specifically told the estimator that these two plants were part of the job and he said nothing about no responsibility. Documents I signed made no exclusions. But even at that, I would expect them to take reasonable care in moving all items. Forcing my plant through a doorway without looking was not reasonable. After all, it could have been any taller item that would have been damaged, such as a floor lamp, for example. And sending a van that would not accommodate the taller items that the estimator had specifically seen seemed completely unreasonable. I told him I had bought extra insurance. But he said the items still were not covered. I responded that I read the additional insurance document and, again, there were no mentions of exclusions. Knowing that some of my most important items would not be covered, why had they so quickly sold me additional insurance, or not at least told me at the time that items would be excluded knowing they were moving them? I got no response. The office dispatcher immediately called the two movers on the job to tell them they had no responsibility. At this point I became concerned about how this action would influence the care the movers took on the rest of the move. Arriving at my home the next day to deliver the items was only one mover. The first thing he told me is that he would need help moving the larger items in. Really? I had to move those items myself? Well, I couldn?t. I?ve had back surgery to insert a brace and absolutely cannot do this. I had to find someone willing to help move the flat-screen TV, plants and several boxes inside. And, I discovered that the large, terracotta planter was not in the van, after telling them twice to be sure to take it with them. I have no way to going to retrieve this item. That?s what you call movers for. The large, terracotta planter is worth $95. The plant was worth at least $285. I documented this for Moving Man with prices for similar items from websites. And the additional insurance I had purchased, which was worthless in covering my damages, was $50. I made an offer with Moving Man that I would pay for the cost of the move minus $200 (rather than the full $380 the items were worth) and minus $50 for the insurance that was useless for the items I was moving. John Stout offered me $50 off, take it or leave it. I told him I believed that was unacceptable. Apparently, from the Angie?s List ratings, Moving Man was at one time quite good. But I don?t know what has happened to them. I cannot recommend the current company under any circumstances.

Although this customer thinks of himself as a victim of poor moving service, we know this is a deception. This deception will be contravened in NYC small claims court on May 19, 2013, when the defendant will have to justify before the judge and in front of us his withholding full payment of $795 for our two days and 200 miles of moving service with the excuse that 2 small branches were broken on his large 7-foot plant, and which he concedes is of far lesser value than what he is withholding from us. The entire process went well, from the curteous man who answered my call to the man who came to estimate time and cost to the terrific team of movers. I was impressed with the speed and politeness of the three men who got couch, bookshelf, queen bed and countless large boxes down four flights of stairs and to another borrough all in just a few hours. Highly recommend.

Let me start by saying that I'm a big skeptic when it comes to moving companies. I sometimes feel that it's an industry that lacks professionalism. So I'm always wary when I need to hire a mover. That said, Moving Man inc. were really fantastic from start to finish. To itemize: 1. Estimator (Jon) seemed to really know his stuff. I had confidence from the start that he was very experienced and he re-assured me about how he had put his estimate together and why it was right. 2. Moving crew were really nice guys. They were a little late (traffic in NYC, not their fault) but did not penalize me for it in any way. 3. They were really careful with my stuff. More careful than I would be, honestly. 4. They came in RIGHT ON the estimate. This seemed fair: I had done everything I said I would do (pack all but the kitchen) and they did their part too; pack the kitchen and move a two bedroom home in a timely manner. 5. They asked questions about where we wanted everything. They did not just throw things down. Everything was placed in the new place exactly where we wanted it to go. Overall. Really great experience. Happy to recommend. Will use again.

If there is such a thing as a fantastic move this was it. They made the whole move easy. Came on time, were great to work with, efficient, drove from Westchester to Manhattan in minimum amount of time, followed the new building's rules (of where there are many) unloaded quickly and were very polite and helpful. This was only a half move and I will be using them again when I sell my home in Westchester and can completely move into my new home in Manhattan.

I was extremely satisfied with Moving Man. Even at the initial estimate, their rep projected competence and straightforwardness. He was very detailed and exacting, but did not seem to be trying to nudge us in any direction besides what was best for our needs. He was also very clear on what the paperwork meant, and helped us understand our options moving. At one point, I thought the delivery window was too wide, so I called another well-reviewed company. They affirmed that anyone who promised me a significantly narrower window for a small, cross-country move was blowing smoke, which though somewhat inconvenient actually reaffirmed my sense that Moving Man was an honest dealer. I always felt in speaking to their various reps by phone that they were on top of my situation, and that I was an important customer (though in the scheme of things I was a small load for them). On the actual day, I watched the entire loading process and was very impressed by the movers. They were careful and systematic with my furniture, including with little things like putting screws in sensible places for the move-in/re-assembly. They showed up exactly when they said they would, and worked quickly and efficiently on a miserably hot and humid July day in Brooklyn. They were also courteous and responsive to any requests I made. I had no reservations handing them each a decent tip. The same could be said for my move-in (though this wasn't handled by Moving Man, but by the Wheaton driver). There's not much story to tell, except that they too unloaded and reassembled my furniture/stuff without incident. So overall, I had a great experience with Moving Man. I had heard horror stories about moving companies losing stuff, having loads fall into limbo, but feel that my experience was the exact opposite: boring and uninteresting in the best possible way.
Description of Work: Moving Man moved I and my family's two-bedroom apartment from Brooklyn, NY, to the San Francisco Bay Area. We boxed our stuff, and they packed our furniture and breakable kitchen items (plates, cups, etc.) along with a few miscellaneous items (some paintings and two hanging mirrors). We received a recommendation for Wheaton (Moving Man is a Brooklyn/NYC agent for Wheaton) from a relative who had moved with them. Also, they checked out okay online. Moving Man performed the estimate (including in the nursery while our baby was sleeping, without waking her), provided us the paperwork, answered questions regarding insurance and other such issues, scheduled the move, dropped off boxes (we went with used boxes, which worked fine), and moved our stuff on the scheduled day. This included some non-valuable furniture items as well as some very valuable items - a new queen bed, a family heirloom, a new glider. They padded and carried these items down three flights from the top of a Brooklyn brownstone. Thus we were moved out of Brooklyn. Moving Man provided an initial delivery window (there was some back and forth, and they were able to narrow the window some). About a week after the move-out, Wheaton was able to call and provide an exact delivery date. They delivered our furniture and items to an apartment in the East Bay, assembling all furniture.

We thank the member for taking the time to review our services and reveal his thoughts about them. We couldn't be happier with his comments. It's our goal at Moving Man, Inc. to take the stress and uncertainty out of the coast-to-coast moving process so that in the end it's all humdrum and quietly controlled. For us moving and storage is a person-to-person process in which all expectations are made clear and addressed with competence and caring from start to finish. Jon Stout, General Manager

Generally the move went well. -Brendan was my estimator. He is a pleasant person to work with but was over a half hour late for my estimate. -My complex requires a Certificate of Insurance, after several calls over the course of a week the certificate was finally faxed to the new complex LITERALLY at the 11th hour so I could move in. -I was there for most of the move but tried to stay out of the way during the packing. However, when I came back into the apartment to make sure that everything was packed, I noticed several very visible/large items left in closets, on the floor, in cabinets and in the dishwasher. I had them pack up all of the these items to transport to the new apartment. -I also notice trash (empty coffee cups (I bought the crew coffee), soda cans (which came from my refrigerator without permission) and empty chip bags (which came from my cabinets without permission). -Upon arrival, the move in was smooth. My move was supposed to include unpacking services and removal of the boxes. My friend and I started unpacking but were left with several boxes (about 30 or so) left in the apartment that were unpacked because at 5pm the crew wanted to leave. -As I am unpacking boxes, i'm noticing several items either broken or missing but thankfully they aren't major/expensive items. -After payment (including the standard 15% tip), I was pressure to write an Angie's List review on the spot - ultimately I declined so that I could write this honest review. UPDATE: I was not implying that Moving Man implied a certain amount of tip.

We would like to first thank this customer for her generous tip despite her moving experience. We at Moving Man, Inc. do not have a standard tip on any of our moves. We feel there should not be a connection between the amount of the tip and the cost of the move.
