I live in Arizona, but have a home in Santa Fe. I needed some work done, and found John on Angie's List because of his high ratings. John was very prompt in getting me a fair estimate, and got the repairs done right away. He even called me on a Sunday to get an emergency repair on my boiler valve, and was able to get the part through his contractor connections. Without this, my pipes could have frozen and created a very costly repair. I'm a doctor, so I understand the concept of priorities: you take care of the most urgent situation first. He certainly did this for me. I would not mind waiting awhile for a lower priority repair, if somebody else had an emergency situation. John and his family even came to Arizona for a visit. We are planning to have him remodel our roof and loft this summer. I would highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Sealed roof leaks; repaired boiler gas valve; removed damaged ceiling; replaced water heater; replaced sink fixtures.
It went great! John is a construction/contractor dynamo and he knows exactly how to apprise any problem and what it takes to get the job done done correctly and expeditiously. All the work done for us (either by John himself or his crew) was performed with care, quality, and skill at a fair price. John works around your schedule and bends over backwards to ensure all goes well and in an expeditious fashion. If you're in the Santa Fe/Eldorado area and are tired of the "manana" attitude, poor workmanship, and rip offs, then give John Hawkins a call. You'll be glad you did, believe me. He and his crew can handle just about anything you may need done. I highly recommend John.
Description of Work: We had our front door rehung, some minor electrical work done, and repairs made to the kitchen window bullnose and plaster, as well as the skylight. Then we had the kitchen repainted and new lighting installed.

John worked with us to plan the space over email and phone calls. We did this all from a distance. We did not meet John until we came to Santa Fe to see the results. It turned out better than we had expected! He also finished up some details for us such as fixing some plumbing issues: de-winterizing, resetting the water heater, toilets etc... He is very knowledgeable and can fix almost anything. I would highly recommend John Hawkins again for another job!
Description of Work: John and his crew tiled our entire condo of about 850 sq. ft. They removed old tile and carpet, cleaned and prepared the cement foundation, and installed 18" porcelain tile on the diagonal throughout the space. They did an awesome job which turned out beautifully!

All of this work proceeded very quickly and I have had no problems since this work was done.
Description of Work: On a Sunday morning I had major problems with 2 plugged toilets. Neither would flush, nor did they respond to plunging. I had no toilet facilities whatsoever. I called John Hawkins for this emergency and he responded immediately. He was at my house within an hour, and proceeded to clean out one of my toilet lines within a few minutes. It also turned out that there was a problem with the sewer pipe downstream, and new clean-out ports between the house and the septic tank. John had his men over for this job on Monday morning. They discovered a bend in the old sewer pipe that was installed by the original builder Joe Boyden. This bend could allow sewage to settle and clog the pipe over time. John's crew removed the old pipe, replaced it, and added new clean-out ports within 24 hours. This was not the first emergency situation that John Hawkins has responded to at my house. Last winter during the coldest weather that I have seen here, my furnace stopped.after a power outage that lasted until midnight. I didn't realize it until the next morning when the house began to cool. I called John first thing in the morning and he was again at my house within an hour. He isolated the problem within 5 minutes and restarted my heating system and prevented my pipes from freezing. I cannot imagine any other service provider who could do better. John Sheliak

John and his co-worker came over on-time on the morning that fit all of our schedules. He immediately got to work and set his co-worker on the another portion of the job (guest bathroom replacing a toilet) from high flow gallon to low flow. He (John) worked on the electrical portion of the job evaluating GFI's that were not operational. He trouble-shooted this issue and found that it was installed incorrectly as they often are. He is willing to teach and show you every step of the job if that is your thing or performs the jobs quickly and efficiently if you don't desire to learn. The work was performed efficiently (one morning) and professionally. He also replaced a PRV valve to the water supply of the house and while evaluating re-routed copper pipes for less bends and attached them securely - to prevent future problems. I chose John Hawkins Construction because of reviews on Angie's list and found that the service he provides does deserve the grade being that of an A. John has attention to detail and won't up sell things that you don't need. John is busy, and coordinating with our schedules took a bit of time, but I just find that this is in direct relation to the quality of work/service he provides when he does arrive at your home.
Description of Work: Replace a toilet from high 6 gallons to low flow. Replace a PRV interior water valve Replace and evaluate (2) GFI's circuits Re-route copper supply water piping from main supply - to electric hot water heater

Mr. Hawkins: We have read your reply to our critique on Angie's List of your dealings with us. Be advised that we do not doubt that you have done good work for others. In addition, one of the reasons why we contacted you WAS because of your positive reviews on Angie's List. However, while we understand that customers with immediate needs (broken pipes, water heater replacement etc) deserve immediate attention, we feel that you should have informed us, when we met with you in March 2011, that you would not be able to do our work projects. However, you gave us no indication that you would not be able to take on our projects, but assured us that you were capable and confident that you would do a great job for us. We were most disappointed that you could not be honest enough with us to tell us that you could not do the work for us right away and did not even offer us any future timeline when you could begin our project. Rather, you kept us "hanging" for over a month. Because of your assurances, we did not make other arrangements for the work to be done because we had your "word" that you were going to do the work for us. Had you taken the time and effort to sit down with us and explain the "priority" work projects that you had to do, we are sure we could have come to some agreement on when and how long it would be for you to commence and complete our project. Apparently you were not interested in doing our project then, now, or in the future. Apparently our project was neither challenging nor financially interesting enough for you. John Hawkins May 2, 2011 We contacted Mr. Hawkins last fall (2010) and met with him at our home discussing several projects we wanted to have done. Unfortunately, because of his illness he was not able to do the work at that time. We understood his plight and arranged for him to meet with us this spring (2011). We met with him on March 30, 2011 and gave him a list of what we wanted done and did a walk through both inside and outside of our home detailing what work needed done. He assured us that he wanted the work and would do a good job for us. After two weeks went by and we did not hear from him, we called him on April 13, 2011 (left a message on his answering machine) asking about his estimate and timeline for doing the work. He called back several days later and advised us that he was working on things to get us an estimate and checking into his suppliers and resources for the labor. Two weeks later, on April 27, 2011 when we did not hear from him, we called him again (leaving a message on his answering machine requesting information on our projects). He contacted us almost a week later (today May 2, 2011) and advised us that he was too busy to do the work for us. We asked him, why had he advised us a month ago that he wanted and would do the work and now he was telling us he was too busy? We asked him why he waited for over a month to tell us now that he couldn't do the work? His answer was that he was too busy to be able to oversee and supervise the work. When asked why he hadn't told us this before, he became defensive to the point of being belligerent and said he 'didn't want to argue the point' and hung up. We consider Mr. Hawkins to be totally unreliable, untrustworthy and not a man of his word. He left us waiting for over a month to get an estimate and timeline for the work he verbally assured us that he would do. He left us "hanging" for over a month so that now we have to find someone else to do the work. We are an honest and trusting couple and take a person at their word. We do not consider Mr. Hawkins a man of "his" word. At this point, he has lost our trust and confidence. We would never hire him, and certainly would never recommend him to anyone wanting to have work done. We wonder how he stays in business with this kind of disregard for clients, and what we consider, dishonesty.
Description of Work: NONE. SEE COMMENTS BELOW REGARDING OUR STORY.

Response from John Hawkins Construction
Dear Member I am so sorry you have lost your trust and confidence to ever work with me. As you can see from my many positive reviews here on Angie's List, all of my past clients who I completed work for have only good and positive things to say about me. I can understand your deep disappointment, given my sterling reputation as a contractor, that I was not able to make the time to get to your project. Such is the construction and remodeling industry. Contractors have to prioritize what projects they take on. I pride myself in always conducting my business in an ethical manner and it was my ethics, more than anything else, which prevented me from taking on the upgrades you wanted me to do to your house at the time you wanted me to do them. My first priorities have always been with those home-owners whose projects involved a certain amount of urgency. Therefore I give my first attention to those who are dealing with cracking foundations, leaky pipes, broken hot water heaters, etc. Only after I catch up on these kind of pressing problems do I then take on more cosmetically oriented projects, such as the one you and I discussed. As you mentioned, I did have an illness that I needed to deal with and after having done so, found myself with a number of old clients needing my construction services as quickly as possible. Understanding the kind of quality required for your project, I could not in all good conscience, take on the kind of detail work involved without my personal supervision to oversee it, beginning, middle and end. Unfortunately, my attention was needed elsewhere at the time. Once again, I am sorry you feel let down. Please know that should you wish to use my construction services in the future, I am more than willing to work with you and have you join the ranks of my many appreciative customers. Please note the many good reference for my past work right here on Angie's List. Sincerely, John Hawkins 8 Frasco Pl. Santa Fe, NM 87508

While there were a few delays waiting for special parts, the entire job went very well. We are totally happy with our new shower and with John's attention to detail, accuracy and excellent supervision of his apprentices.
Description of Work: Leaking tub and moldy area was removed. Entire area rebuilt, replumbed and wired and new shower area built. Tile was applied, a bench built, new plumbing fixtures and drain put in and a hand held shower in addition to regular shower was added. Repair to sheetrock in bath was done as well as minor additional plumbing repair.
John completed the job in about half the time we anticipated. John always promptly responded to our phone calls and e-mails. Throughout the years we have worked with many contractors and we can definitively say John Hawkins is the best contractor we have ever worked with.
Description of Work: Like many in Santa Fe this winter we experienced a burst pipe that did major damage to our entire home. We interviewed a couple of contractors and immediately felt John was the one to help us with the extensive repairs. Right off the bat we could tell John is a man with an incredible attention to detail. Every interior wall in our house was affected by the water damage. The majority of walls needed to be re-plastered and several walls needed to have the drywall replaced. Before the water damage the house had beautiful plaster walls and we were concerned that the walls would be able to look as good once repaired. The new walls are absolutely beautiful and exceed our expectations. The stone floor throughout the house had to be cleaned and resealed. We now have rich, beautiful flagstone floors. The list of work that needed to be done in our home was very extensive and quite overwhelming to us as homeowners. Our bathroom fixtures needed to be reinstalled and plumbing issues had to be addressed. Our appliances needed to be reinstalled. A closet shelving unit had to be repaired and reinstalled. Carpeting in two rooms had to be installed and John coordinated that installation. Electrical switches and receptacles had to be moved to match the new plaster work. Custom pocket doors had to be replaced and stained. Walls had to be reinsulated paying special attention to pipes. All wall surfaces had to be repainted.

It was one of those jobs that seem to start out small and then Murphy's Law kicks in. 1st we thought the pipe was plugged and they tried to flush it out with a hose, then a snake, but nothing came through to the septic tank. The hand dig was tough, as there were mountains of rocks and tree roots. New pipe and fittings went very quickly and professionally. Raking and cleanup was excellant.
Description of Work: Excavated about 45 ft of waste water pipe, which revealed many breaches by tree roots from a near- by cottonwood. Replaced pipe and fittings with the correct ones, filled in the trench, raked and removed all the old piping.

Late Saturday night (3/5/11) I discovered a huge leak under my kitchen sink. I e-mailed John and asked if he could come and fix it even though it would be on a Sunday. I got a very quick response Sunday Morning " I'll be there. Will call first." John arrived early Sunday after noon and not only fixed the leak under the sink but installed a new light socket that had not worked for some time under the kitchen cabinet. As always John was prompt, did excellent work, was courteous and reasonably priced. I highly recommend him without reservation!

After several days of sub-zero temperatures, a water pipe froze and busted in our bathroom, flooding our master bedroom, closet, and hall. I couldn't get a plumber to answer the phone, much less make a service call late on a Friday afternoon. Through Angie's list, I found John. He happened to be in the area and was at our house in 10 minutes and a crew came shortly after that. They stayed until 7:00 pm in order to make certain that we had water over the weekend. They helped us move furniture and tear out carpet. With three young children, including a newborn, we were grateful to be able to stay in our home and not have to spend the weekend in a hotel until our water could be restored.
Description of Work: John and crew arrived to take care of our busted frozen pipe within 10 minutes of my calling him late on a Friday afternoon. They were punctual on subsequent visits, their work was high quality, and the price was fair. We plan on using them again in the near future.

It couldn't have gone better. John is both expert and considerate. I was very impressed. He is the one to call in the future. We need to remodel our heating system. John will be the first one we'll call when we are ready to consider the remodeling.
Description of Work: We had been gone for a week and came home on December 31, 2010 – the coldest day of the year in Santa Fe. When we arrived, there was no heat in our home. The radiant water heat in the floors had no pressure and the boiler would not light, although the pilot was on. We plugged in electric space heaters and settled in for what we thought would be several days of being frozen. Since it was New Year’s Eve and all of Santa Fe was probably having difficulties due to the record cold, we knew there would be no help available for awhile. On Sunday, New Year’s Day, we figured we’d call a plumber, just to get on their list. We learned about John Hawkins from Angie’s List and called him. We left a voice mail and settled in for what was likely to be a long wait. To our amazement, within an hour, we got a call from John (“Hawk”). He came over soon thereafter (ON NEW YEAR’S DAY and ONE HOUR later) and diagnosed the problem. A valve was damaged and the water lines were frozen. He blocked air vents, purged the lines and the boiler, and started outside heat on the pipes. The next day, he and assistant came back and removed and replaced the faulty valve. The boiler fired up. We had heat starting on January 2. Not only were the charges low, John called twice that week to make sure everything was working right. John Hawkins is a rare individual. He can be trusted and relied upon. I recommend him without reservation. Warren M. Steinman

John is very professional. We scheduled his work and he was prompt and efficient. He explained clearly what he planned to do (before performing the work) and gave an excellent demonstration of how the new pump works as well as the new remote control device.
Description of Work: The hot water recirculation pump was leaking and needed to be replaced. John said that the leaking pump was running 24/7 to supply hot water at all times. I rather liked having instant hot water on demand, but the gas bill has been high and a painless way to reduce it was to replace the leaking pump and, instead of a timer, use the new remote control device to turn on the pump when I want hot water (maybe twice a day). This works very well and now I only have hot water when I want it and not 24/7. It is easy to use and takes only a minute to clear out the cold water from the lines and get hot water. I would not have known that such a device was available and John only suggested it - did not insist in any way - and gave me time to try it out before concluding our business. He checked back several times to make sure all was working well and that I was satisfied with the new arrangement.
Very reasonable. We don't even ask for an estimate any more as we trust him to take care of us. There is hardly a job he can't do. His employees are fast , thorough and friendly. He checks on the progress of a job often. We are so happy that he is now able to do snow plowing. We are sure to be taken care of and leave it to him as to when the right time to plow is to avoid unnecessary repeated plowing.
Description of Work: Over the last 15 years here are too many jobs he has performed to list here. He is a trusted friend who will put himself into the work as if it was his own. He often suggests cheaper ways to do a repair and is quite creative this way.

The whole process went extremely well. John and crew always met their commitment dates and times. John showed up a short time after being called, surveyed the problem and offered a solution - which we took( this was Dec 9). The work began almost immediately and was finished on Dec 14, with an intervening weekend. John's company is at the top of the plumbing list for us!

Yes, the price paid of $0 is correct. I have used three different plumbers in town and have been dissatisfied with all of them. Based on the reviews in Angie's List, I decided to give John Hawkins a try. The radiant heat in part of our home suddenly stopped working. I went ahead and shut down the boiler in case there was a serious problem and called John. He sent out one of his plumbers that morning and he serviced the system and got it running. When I spoke with John the next day and asked him to bill me, he said there would be no charge because it had been an easy fix. I have never, ever had a plumber make a free service call. Needless to say, his prompt response and solving of the problem would have been enough to get my repeat business, but this no charge service call truly puts him in a category of his own. Deb

All our water supply tubing was originally installed 42 years ago when we built my Mom's house. Over the years this copper tubing had been gradually corroded by our hard well water and had begun to slowly leak at multiple points. I live several states away. When my Mom reported water pooling in the utility closet we immediately called John Hawkins Construction because we had already called on them in on a previous emergency in May of this year and had been very impressed by the promptness and quality of their repair of my Mom's failed kitchen faucet. Once again they responded promptly and professionally. John visited first thing in the morning and helped my Mom place a bucket beneath an exposed ceiling pipe that was dripping in a difficult spot. At the same time he evaluated our copper supplies through an opening in the closet ceiling. He proposed a plan to fix the obvious leak and to replace much of the water supply tubing to the kitchen and bathroom. His suspicion of the probable need for more extensive replacement proved correct after his assistants opened the wall to fix the obvious leak and verified the existence of more problems with our copper tubing. Because I couldn't be there in person to see how the job was progressing I especially appreciate John's before and after digital pictures of the plumbing. The repairs are now complete, John's estimate proved accurate, and we are once again very happy with the work of John Hawkins Construction.

Description of Work: This particular job at my home encompassed a long list of repairs that I asked John to handle. If I need ANYTHING done in or around my home, I call John. He always lets me know what he is doing and how much it will cost. He is honest and trustworthy. I used to call plumbers, electric repair people, roofers, handymen, etc. but now I JUST CALL JOHN!! Really-he can fix anything....and build anything...and he is a dog lover!!!
