About us

My name is Efren Calderon Jr. I am the owner of Straight Line Painting. I have over 20 years of on the job experience. My father was a professional painter and I quickly learned the trade by working with him. My father was a perfectionist and I'm a perfectionist, and I always pay attention to fine detail. I am thankful for my father for instilling in me from an early age to "act right" and always be professional, honest, and dependable. I enjoy the work I do, and what I want most is that my customers are happy and satisfied when I leave their home or business.

It was the biggest contracting nightmare of my life.
Description of Work: I have never encountered such a rude and shameless contractor in my entire home owners experience. Per Kim's response, she states that Caruso landscaping cannot be held accountable for "acts of God" (a.k.a. seasonal rain). This is her best excuse for leaving a botched landscape job unfinished for 6 months - it was a complete eye sore to the neighborhood. All the neighbors were mortified at the work that was done, including the Town of Winchester Public Works department who came down to inspect the final driveway that was put in by our replacement landscaper. Counter to Kim's false claims, the driveway was completely acceptable to the Town as stated in written letter, and was to our satisfaction - unlike the useless eye sore of a gravel pit that was left behind by Caruso landscaping which was subsequently removed and landscaped over with a new front lawn - at our expense as they refused to come back and fix the mess. Consequently, the Attorney General's office advised us back in 2009 to counter sue after we received numerous threats from Caruso's Attorney. She was horrified by the pictures we provided to her and further disgusted that Caruso flat out refused any attempts at mediation through the Attorney General's office. As it appears that Caruso intends to continue this fiasco in court, we will be filing a counter suit for reimbursement of the new front lawn, including removal of the unauthorized gravel pit, which was in complete violation of the specifications that were provided to them and agreed upon.

If you are look to hire a landscaper, don't expect to hear back in any kind of timely way. Specifically if you are dealing with Kim. After contacting this office 5 times in 20 days asking for feedback, I finally spoke with her on the phone. I understand this is a busy time with the beginning of the season, but I don't appreciate being told that my business is not important to them and that they "have plenty of happy customers, we don't need you". I'm more than willing to wait, I just want to hear back so that I can plan my time and money accordingly. I hope this isn't the way they treat all of their incoming customers, because they aren't going to be gaining many with that attitude. I also hope that John, the owner of the business, realizes that this person Kim is rude and does not share in his view of how to treat your customers. If I could give their customer service a rating, it would be a zero.

John Caruso and his team showed up on the morning of 12/7/09 with a small excavator. When we came home from work that evening, our backyard was dug up in one area and 2 huge dirt piles had been formed. In the front, our lawn had been completely scraped away all along the existing driveway (at the same steep incline!) and crushed stone was thrown on top of it. This was suppose to be a functioning driveway. We immediately called to voice our concern the next day and never received a call back. So, we went through the winter without the driveway we had anticipated. I started calling again in early March once the snow had melted to get a date when the work would be resumed and the driveway rectified to our specifications. I called repeatedly until the end of May 2010 with no answer as to when the work would be completed. Finally, the last week in May, I received a call that someone would be coming that week to resume the work. No one showed up. When I called to inquire, I was told it was due to the fact that our back yard was too wet (our back yard was always wet which is what we were trying to remedy with the excavation and grading!) At that point, I said I was terminating the contract and any further work. I promptly received a bill for $2,200 for one days work (creating 2 dirt piles in my backyard and a useless "driveway" in the front which ruined half my front lawn)!
Description of Work: We currently have an outstanding claim that we submitted with both the Attorney General's office and the Better Business Bureau. We hired John Caruso in early November 2009 to excavate, grade, fertilize and reseed the backyard plus excavate an area in the front of the house level with the street to park one car. The total quote for the work was $4,900.00. The intent of entering into the contract at that time of the year was to have a working driveway to use during the pending winter and to have the grading and seeding done in the back so that the lawn would start growing in the spring to be ready for use by early summer.

Response from Straight Line Painting LLC
We are currently pursuing this matter in court. We believe there are many discrepancies in her complaint. The work that we were hired to do was never completed by our company because the homeowner severed our contract and hired someone else to complete the project; When the member called to sever the contract, I told him an invoice for the work done to this point will be forthcoming, to which he agreed. During our conversation he never stated that we destroyed his front lawn .. I didn't receive a response to my invoice until after following up with a statement, the member called and we played "phone tag" I returned his call on many occasions and after approximately two weeks of trying to get in touch with him I sent letter dated August 3 (please see attached copy) to which I received a returned letter stating they will not pay the invoice and they sent a letter to the Attorney General without so much as a discussion? At this point we turned the matter over to our attorney. Whoever they hired to do the remaining work destroyed their front yard; we did not access the back yard through the front yard. We accessed the backyard through the left side on the side of the garage, we even tied up the crab apple branches and there is still a rope there evidencing this. The reason we didn't finish the work was due to the weather and the excessive wetness in the backyard, which is why the new contractor they hired destroyed the place! John had numerous conversations with both the member and his wife before commencement of work. He explicitly explained to them in detail exactly what he was going to do and how he was going to do it. I did speak with the wife on a few occasions during the spring and she NEVER had any complaints about the work that was done, she just wanted to know when we could finish the work. She never once complained that we destroyed her yard because it is not true, the person that destroyed her yard was whoever she hired when she got impatient. Also in the complaint she said the reason for this project was to remedy the issue of her wet back yard, she told us the reason they wanted to do this project was to make a bigger play area for her children. Had they ever voiced the fact that the reason they were doing this project was to .eliminate the excessive wetness in the back yard that would have raised a red flag for us. We cannot be held responsible for unseen problems underground such as active springs or acts of God such as the weather. The invoice sent was itemized because they severed the contract and the amount of the invoice is $1995.00 not $2,200.00 as stated in the complaint, enclosed find a copy. They were charged according to the labor, equipment, materials & dump fee that we supplied. How could another contractor estimate the cost for the work that was already done, without seeing the area beforehand? And knowing exactly what we did? And if some one else estimated $600 to do the work we already did and she stated in her complaint that 1/3 of the job was complete (when it was actually quite a bit more that 1/3 of the work) Why would they have entered into an agreement with us for almost $5,OOO.00? The inability for them to use their yard is not a result of our negligence, just the opposite. They were negligent in explaining the reason why they wanted this work to be done. Also the driveway that they have now, which someone else did is an asphalt paved driveway, which is not what we agreed to do. Naturally an asphalt driveway is MUCH more expensive than a gravel one. We agreed to install a gravel driveway without cutting or removing the curb. The current driveway that they had someone else do, required a street opening permit and an entirely different scope of work. The contractor that they hired did not obtain any permits, as required by law and buried the water box, which is also against the law. We abide by the law and shouldn't be penalized for doing so. We have been in business for well over 40 years and this is the first time we've ever encountered such an accusation. We have numerous customers that are very happy and the majority of our business is due to outstanding recommend ations. Kimberly Caruso, Office Manager
