To start the movers showed up hours late, the final bill was more than double the estimate, altogether this was a horrible and unprofessional experience! I would not recommend this company to anyone!
Description of Work: This was a service for moving , two men showed up and moved my items , boxes , 2 small tables, an oversized chair and chase, 2 dressers, queen size bed and frame, a pub table, and other various boxed items.

In starting with the apartment we moved out of, it was left in complete disarray with trash strewn everywhere. I understand it would have taken them longer if they cleaned up after themselves, but in the end, we ended up having to pay for an entire hour for them to clean up all of their blankets and brake down all of their boxes at our new place. They also did their clean up while we unpacked and reset up the furniture their so called white glove package was supposed to include. So we ended up paying them to clean up their own equipment and we paid them for us to unpack our own boxes... In returning to the apartment we left, we had several drawers in the kitchen still full, two cabinet handles broken off, the back of two cabinets still had bowls and plates in them, the pantry was full of serving trays and non perishable items, and this was the room was handled by the foreman! Moving to the living room: several glass and small miscellaneous items where left on the floor along with all of the wiring to entertainment center, this was also supposed to be set back up, as part of the white glove service.... The bedrooms had the alarm clocks, trash cans, curtains and other small items left behind, nothing from the master bathroom was packed and moved. When we arrived at our new place, the truck took a half hour to arrive, mind you the move was only four miles and takes a max of 15 minutes. Once they arrived they started immediately moving things in and did not put down boards to cover the floors that had just been finished, and was something we explicitly spoke about. They were sliding boxes across the newly finished floors, that scratched them to pieces and had to be re-coated again, none of the mattresses were in bags as stated, the jewelry stand was packed full and upside down, as we started to unpack boxes they were crammed full and had things literally just thrown into them, my wife watched in horror as one of the workers pulled her wedding dress out of a box it had been crammed into, a clean comforter was thrown into a hamper full of dirty clothes, and to boot there is no telling where any of the not yet unpacked boxes belong, as they are all marked in shorthand Spanish. I am fearful to continue unpacking at what else I may find. Their idea of professionally packed was dumping draws into boxes! I think the best part of this situation is after speaking with the owner and foreman for an hour about how displeased we were, (BTW they used that time to continue charging me) they gave us a measly half hour off and then George (the Forman) had the audacity to ask for a tip. If this is the service that can be expected from Provident Moving, LLC and how they handle disputes, it is amazing they are still in business.

Provident did a fine job of moving my things. I was well prepared, however, so the upshot of this review is that, when moving, do your homework and get your ducks in a row! That will help you avoid surprises like the ones that the other reviewers have complained about. At first I was worried by all the negative reviews, but I noted that none of the reviews mentioned objects being broken or lazy workmanship. Most of the reviews actually reflect badly on the customers, I think--they would have had the same experience with practically any moving company. I went ahead and booked, packed my things carefully, and greeted the movers at 9:05 AM. We were on the road by 10:50, and it would have gone faster had the elevators in my old building not been ludicrously slow and small. Unpacking in my new building, where the elevators are quick, took an hour and the movers were on their way with an 18% tip that I chose to give them. Nothing's perfect, of course. One of the original selling points that they gave me was that they were able to fumigate their trucks against bed bugs. I don't see how the truck could have been effectively cleaned. The blankets, maybe, but my precautions were to just order a new platform bed because my old one was done for, and to keep my mattress in a bed-bug resistant covering which they completely shrink-wrapped over anyway. They also almost went to the wrong address, a similar street and number in another town, but fortunately I was talking with them while they were on the road and we caught the GPS error (and I do accept that it was a GPS snafu--either way it was a five-minute detour). The only other issue was that one of the crossbars on my TV stand was slightly bent during the move, likely because something else had been placed on top of it I had exposed the bar when I partly deconstructed the stand, and they agreed it was a reasonable way to move that piece of furniture. It was easily fixed, however, and the integrityof the stand is not compromised. Unlike Mayflower's local subsidiary that handled my last move, they did not bust up my filing cabinet--so at least I still have one good one for keeping papers. As for the complaints that the other reviewers have listed, I encountered all of them, but I don't fault the company. They demanded cash, but they said so before anything got loaded on the truck. I was ready with a cashier's check anyway; when I asked during the booking whether they take credit I was told that it was possible but incurred a 7% processing fee, which pays for the merchant's fee that they'd otherwise lose to the card company plus a "convenience" fee. I'd call this one a tax on stupid people--every small moving business charges cash. It's just what they do. I was quoted $688 for work and materials, the final bill for work and materials ran about $710. Not bad at all. The full price of $800 came from state taxes and a $30 toll that the truck had to pay (again, anyone who doesn't expect incidentals like that is blissfully irrational). If you get quoted "three men at $80 per hour," about the standard moving company rate, you should understand that that means $25-$30 an hour for a 5-6 hour work day for these guys. That;s not much to live on. Packing materials, gas for the truck, office fees to keep the company running, and insurance cannot come out of the workers' wages. I had a few remaining things to pack up that morning, and they rapidly put them in boxes and taped up the ones I hadn't yet sealed. To be honest, I did a better job packing and strapping boxes than they did, but I worked little by little for two weeks whereas they caught the rest in 15 minutes. Either way it got there and none of the boxes burst open. If you hire movers, you are paying money for 3-4 men to come to your house and scurry around with shrink wrap and blankets to get your stuff from A to B. These guys can make civil engineering projects out of packing tape, and they work fast. That's a good thing. If you expect them to daintily place each and every box in a particular room of your new home accordning to your own labelling system, or lovingly place things into boxes where they'll not just survive the trip but be comfortable too, you better be prepared to pay extra. If you prepare poorly and complain about the price going up later, you either don't understand the economics or, perhaps, you think that some demographics don't deserve a living wage.

It was costly and the two guys rushed everything to the extreme. They were taking things out before I approved them to go. They left some things behind. When we got to our destination, they did not follow directions whatsoever and put things in the garage that should have gone upstairs and things upstairs should have been put in the garage. Many of these things very heavy for me to have to switch around to their proper place. Everything was so completely rushed that boxes were set all over the place leaving me to have to move each box on my own. I am a woman of 5'2" approx. 115 lbs.

This company has very shady business practices. I was quoted for 6 hrs of work @80/hr or $480. My stuff (enough to fill a 2 bedroom apartment) was in a storage unit. I was asked which floor and if there was an elevator. I said the 2nd floor and that there was an elevator. She asked about my stuff and I said it was in boxes, but that the furniture was just out in the open. She said I would be fine and wouldn't need any additional packaging. The movers arrived the day of and started wrapping every piece of furniture with pads (some with 2 or 3 pads) that cost $4/pad and then wrapped all pads with duct tape. They even wrapped sealed boxes with more duct tape. Each roll of duct tape was $3.50. Once the stuff was on the truck and at the final location, they presented a significantly higher bill than the quote and to top it off, I HAD to pay in cash. There was an elevator fee (which I got waived after calling to complain - they knew about it, but omitted it from the quote.) They were going to finish the move in 5.5 hours, which I thought was great, except they then charged me for an extra hour to cover travel time back to the office bringing the total time to 6.5 hours. On the phone, we covered all the work involved and it came to 6 hrs. Instead of quoting 7 hours of work (which would have been the right thing to do), they quoted 6 hours and hide behind a disclaimer on their quote that says, 4 hours on the quote means 3 hours of work and 1 hr of travel time. My final bill was $700. $520 for the move and $180 in unnecessary packing materials. STAY AWAY!

On November 14th I completed a quote request on Moving.com for a moving company. After researching the companies sent me in an email dated 11/14 at 8:52 PM, reviewing their online ratings and carefully speaking with company representatives I chose Provident Moving, LLC; DBA Provident Moving and Storage (License: Intrastate 39PM00106200). I am a victim of Hurricane Sandy and that I was careful to review all mover reviews and diligent to compare rates and, most importantly, additional fees that may be incurred to avoid possible price gouging. I was quoted $75/hour by Danielle with additional fees including $4/blanket. 4 hour minimum. I asked several times if there were any additional fees ? she assured me NO. I re-confirmed with Danielle there were no additional fees. She said she would email a confirmation. I wanted to settle everything on phone as I had only intermittent access to Internet due to storm. Danielle called me the day before the move to confirm. She also called me the morning of the move to confirm if it was OK that the movers show up 30 minutes early. It was OK. She said there was an excellent foreman names ?Anthony? assigned to the job who would guide me through my move. - When the movers showed up they came in a Provident Moving van. - At Anthony?s request I showed them around. - At Anthony?s request we reviewed a huge packet of paperwork that needed to be signed in many places. The paperwork was Provident Moving paperwork. He told me that I would be told the price of the job at the destination and I would need to pay in cash before my belongings were unpacked. I agreed. - I confirmed the rate of $75/hour, 4 hour minimum, $4/blanket. Anthony advised of additional packing materials that would be needed, a lot of them. He also said the 4 hours only meant 3 hours of labor and 1 hour of drive time. I would be billed 1 hour of drive time no matter how long the drive. - I asked him what he thought the job would cost, he said he could definitely provide an estimate now that he sees what has to go, which is a 1 BR apartment? $900-$1000. I WAS SHOCKED. I immediately called the Provident Moving office. Danielle was gone but I spoke to a ?John? who identified himself as a manager. John, along with Anthony, explained to me that I would need a huge amount of packing materials that there are fees for. Boxes, tape, cellophane, custom boxes they would need to shape around objects. That this was more of a ?white glove move.? Also that paying for transportation is considered ?standard? in any moving service and I should have known this. I was told nothing about tape, boxes, cellophane, and definitely nothing about drive time. Again, I was very clear with Danielle that I needed to know all this ahead of time. By the time I was done signing all the paperwork and done with my call the other 2 laborers were 30 minutes into the move. There was no sending them away as so many of my belongings were in the truck. I went forward with the move despite the on-site quote that was DOUBLE what I was told on the phone. John, at least told me he?d help me by negotiating with me on the packing materials at the end of the move. I was told by Anthony that I needed to pay in cash before my belongings were taken off the truck at the new residence, which is a 5 minute drive from the old residence. Before unloading suddenly the paperwork process was informal. - No more contracts in triplicate. - Anthony scribbled the moving materials on a blank piece of paper, quantity and price per unit, and totaled each item separately. - He verbally presented me a grand total of $900. He said this was a great deal John was cutting me because this is actually inclusive of the 20% tip I have to pay. Another fee that was not told to me. - The move indeed took 4 hours. - I asked for an itemized receipt. I was denied by Anthony and told to call the office. - I asked for a receipt on Provident Moving letterhead. I was denied. - I asked for copies of all my paperwork and contracts I signed. I was denied. - I asked to speak with John again, he said he spoke to John and that I didn?t need to, this WAS the negotiated price. ANTHONY TOLD ME CLEARLY I WOULD NEED TO CALL THE OFFICE FOR THIS PAPERWORK. IN FACT, I NEEDED TO CALL JOHN AFTER THE MEN LEFT BECAUSE I COULDN?T FIND CUSHIONS FOR A CHAIR AND I TOLD HIM I?D HAVE TO CALL HIM MONDAY FOR COPIES OF CONTRACTS AND ITEMIZED RECEIPTS. JOHN SAID OK ? EVERYTHING WAS LEFT OFF WELL WITH THANK YOU?S AND PLEASANTRIES. So on Monday I contacted the office and spoke with Danielle, I carefully explained what I would need and requested the information be faxed to me. - Danielle said that John was there and said I should have only been charged $740 for the job. Now I REALLY wanted an itemized receipt. - Danielle said the contracts can?t be faxed because they are too long so she would put them in the mail. - I requested she please photocopy the top and bottom as 2 different sheets and fax them that way. I also requested: - an itemized receipt, just as I asked from Anthony - a receipt that listed each packing material, the discount, and the gratuity as Anthony laid it out - a copy of Anthony?s ?worksheet? that he scribbled up the packing materials on to arrive at a total - THE ORIGINAL EMAIL THEY SAID THEY SENT AS A CONFIRMATION AND RUN-DOWN OF EVERYTHING I?D BE CHARGED FOR. DANIELLE AGREED TO COMPILE IT AND FAX IT. NEVER RECEIVED. By the end of the day I did not receive a fax. I called by at 5:30 and spoke with John. John said that there must have been a reason that Danielle didn?t fax me. I requested that he fax me. He said he couldn?t and that Danielle would the next day. I requested an email address where I could contact them both and send an official request for a fax. I sent the email last night. This morning I followed up again via email and requested a confirmation that my email was received. Nothing. I called at approximately 2PM. Danielle told me I?d need to speak to a Manager, a different Manager, named Paul. She then put me on hold. She had a real attitude at this point and I suspected she wasn?t coming back to the phone. I actually took a picture of the phone while on hold for 5 minutes with their business number on the display. She then came back and I hear muffling and was hung up on. I called back again. No answer. I called back again from another number. Danielle answered. She began to take my number because she said she didn?t want to deal with me. I asked her why it was so impossible to get a receipt, an itemized receipt after spending $900 with a company? Particularly at a time like this when it may be needed for insurance or FEMA. She asked for my number, took half of it and told me to hold on. *** When she came back she told me that PROVIDENT MOVING DID NOT PERFORM MY MOVE! THAT ANTHONY?S COMPANY DID. ANTHONY THE FOREMAN. ANTHONY HAD THE PAPERWORK AND SHE DID NOT HAVE ANTHONY?S NUMBER. SHE ALSO DID NOT KNOW THE NAME OF ANTHONY?S COMPANY. SHE THEN HUNG UP ON ME.*** So, nobody at ?Provident Moving? will talk to me. I have nobody?s number but this office. I do not know ?Anthony?s? last name. I do not think Danielle was even telling the truth, honestly, as I was careful to look at the paperwork and it said Provident Moving all over it ? so I don?t have Anthony?s company name. I think it is very possible that Anthony overcharged me, especially since Danielle and John confirmed I should have been charged $740. After I filed a complaint to the better business bureau, as I have an eye and ear witness, a photo of their truck in my driveway, incoming calls from their business to my phone documented by my bill, they replied that a company called Satisfied Moving did my move. This company doesn't exist. I have also since tried to visit the offices of Provident Moving at 4-21 Banta Place in Fair Lawn. It is an empty lot.

uI received a call from Provident after filling out a request for movers to contact me regarding a move of belongings from the top level of my home to the bottom level. A very pleasant woman called me and told me that since I didn't need a truck, the the price would be $90/hr for four men. And that I would have to pay cash. I saw the move as taking about four hours and estimated the move to be about $400 +. I was told the movers would be at my home from 7-8AM. They arrived at about 9...three men. I went through the house and showed them what neede to be moved. The lead man then wrote an estimate...over $800...far above and beyond my expectations based on the conversation. Without even starting I was charged for three hours of travel equalling $280...I balked and asked that the company be called. The lead told me no one wold be there. At that point I told them I did not want their services and the lead told me I had to pay the $280. I paid the cash, told him I felt this was a rippoff and bait and switch and that I wanteda receipt. At this pont I was very angry. They left a few minutes later, there was no receipt lef. I do not feel this company was ethical-I should have been told about these charges when I was on the phone with the woman.
Description of Work: I needed a move of furniture from thetop floor of the house to a lower level....about 15-20 pieces of furniture and boxes.
