Pettigrew Plumbing came out to my house twice; he tried a simple fix the first time but had a suspicion that he might need to return to replace a part. I was grateful that he tried simple first. He returned promptly, part in hand and corrected our issue on the second visit. Fees were reasonable considering the work performed. |

I contacted Pettigrew Plumbing & HVAC based on the great reviews here on Angie's List. They were responsive and called me back within 24 hours of leaving a voice mail. They told me they would be here on the morning of the 15th between 8-8:30am. They didn't show up until 9:10am with no phone call to say they were running late. Next, he spent about 15 minutes looking at what needed to be done, stated he needed to go get some parts (I thought he mentioned Lowe's, which is less than 10 minutes from my house), but I was a bit taken aback since it was a small job with what I would consider standard plumbing materials (1 1/2" pvc, 3/4 pex, valve switch, laundry box, pvc drain, outdoor faucet, and silicone caulk), so I guess I expected a plumber to travel with some of the standard items. Nevertheless, I wouldn't have even mentioned this if it didn't take him 90 minutes to return (left at 9:30am; returned at 11am). Essentially, the job involved moving the existing plumbing over about eight feet in order to allow me to stack my washer and dryer. I also had wanted to move the outdoor faucet (located in the same area) about the same distance. He worked from 11am to 4pm . . . I can't say for certain since he appeared to be working the whole time and the quality of the work was fine, but I would've not expected this job to take five hours and in looking at the final result, I'm baffled at what could've possibly taken this long, so I feel he was milking the clock. I was even more baffled when he handed me the final bill of $798.00. He charged me for 7.5 hours of work at $75 per hour ($562.50), yet he was only at my house less than six hours, so I got to pay for his expedition to find parts for 90 minutes. On top of that, he charged me $235.50 for the parts, which seemed severely inflated. I was so curious I stopped by Lowe's to price the parts out and I struggle to even come up with $150 for the parts. I was stunned when he handed me the bill and I didn't say anything because I thought maybe I had a misunderstanding of the work involved or cost of the parts, but I wished I had because this job should've been in the $400-$500 range. I don't know if Pettigrew consists of multiple plumbers and the experience may be different depending on which one you get, but I won't be utilizing their services again.

Response from Pettigrew Plumbing and HVAC
We try to be on time with all our customers. Occasionally, we do run late and I do apologize, customer should have recieve a phone call letting them know. Some of our work is billed at time and material. Analyzing the problem is part of the job, as is gettting the material that we need to fix the problem. It is simply not possible to carry all the parts / components that we need for a particular job. I gave the customer the option for a fixed price, and he requested billing based on time. We are always conscious of the clock and would not be highly rated on Angies List if we "milked the clock". Customer was also aware that we charge one way travel time to the job which he did not factor in. The time that it takes on a job is the time to do a thorough job. We want to do it right once. Some customers have preconcievd ideas on how much a job should cost and their own concept may not be entirely accurate. i wish this customer asked me but he never did. Sometimes the amount of time or difficulty is impossible to predict. As far as material and where we get it. We try to go through our wholesalers whenever we can. We know the quality and they stand behind and warranty everything we buy. In this case we did go to our wholesaler, not Lowes, it was only a few more minutes down the road. If our wholesaler is not close, we would opt for a box store. We do markup from our wholesaler, again standard. Even our hourly rate is in the middle of the pack if you were to take a survey of rates. I am truly sorry that this customer was not happy, We are trying to build our client base and make every attempt to treat everyone fairly. My phone line is always open to discuss any issues or concerns that anyone may have. Had this customer called me, we could have quite possibly worked something out for him, or at the very least answered his concerns. Our goal is customer satisfaction, and although I cannot make everyone happy, we will make every attempt possible. Sincerely, John Pettigrew, owner Pettigrew Plumbing and Heating

Pettigrew is quite simply the gold standard of customer service. They came on short notice to find and fix a leak of unknown origin. After some investigative plumbing, they found the problem and fixed it; and they stood behind their work when the initial fix didn't work, and came back and finished it with a different approach the following day for free, Not only that, but the price was VERY fair and the gentlemen working for them were great folks. I now have a new plumber, and you should too!

It took them two days to complete the job. As I was in the process of selling two houses, I had a lot on my mind. They helped to ease the stress of getting the house ready for market. Rodney was very helpful and went beyond the call of duty to cover the large gap that had existed in the wall prior to their coming.
Description of Work: They totally repaired my water filter system, fixed leaks and did a better job than the original plumber who installed it. It is totally tight and the water from my well comes through beautifully.

I've used several local plumbing and HVAC contractors both in my home and in several rental properties. After doing business with John, I'll never use anyone else. He is by far the most honest, competent & responsive contractor I've dealt with. I've called him for multiple different issues and he has always been responsive and billed honestly and fairly for his services. Highly recommended.

Work was done professionally with no problems. I expect them back to install the toilet, shower trim, sink faucets once the bathroom is ready for this work to be done.
Description of Work: The plumber Steve upgraded copper pipes in my main bathroom. The walls were demoed to the studs due to major damage from a pipe break. Pipes to the shower and sink were replaced and brought up to code; pipes in the basement were replaced. Steve was punctual, professional and cleaned up from his work. I was very satisfied with the work done.

Steve did a great job. The connection for the washing machine which leaked previously, now, no longer leaks. The work was performed very professionally. When one thinks of the cost of plumbers-it can be quite expensive-but at the same time if I receive quality work, then, it makes the cost more palatable. I no longer have concerns about the laundry room plumbing. Steve gave me a thorough inspection of my home plumbing prior to performing the work and assessed what needed to be done. Thank you Steve. I plan to use them again in the spring to perform work that could not be accomplished during the winter season. I was impressed with Steve's professional manner and knowledge concerning plumbing. Angie's list has provided me with a plumbing resource that I can rely on for my future plumbing needs. Thank you. John Pettigrew kept me informed, as needed of actions that were planned. I appreciated that.

It is always my goal that every customer be 100% satisfied with our work and I am truly sorry that this customer was dissatisfied. I am always available to my customers and will go to whatever lengths are necessary to ensure that my customers are satisfied. [member name removed] contacted us to re-route water lines to a bathroom because the water lines were continually freezing. The only protected path to the bathroom was along the baseboard and drilling through to the bathroom. This pathway was explained to [member name removed] and approved by him. We completed the work and although I had to return to make an adjustment in the water piping, he seemed pleased with the result. We completed the work without payment up front. [member name removed] made a partial payment at the end of the job and withheld 50% because he thought we may be responsible for a surge in his water bill. There are numerous reasons for a surge in a water bill, but the work we did was in no way a contributing factor. My numerous calls to him went unanswered as I earnestly tried to resolve any dispute or concerns he had. To this day he still has not paid us in full or contacted me to discuss why he was unhappy. If there was any problem after the job was completed [member name removed] never communicated this to me. I want every customer to be happy and continue to invite this customer to contact me for resolution of his concerns.
