The first day he showed up was on a Thursday the 13, he was here by him self. He had done the power washing and sanding I previously had sanded all the railing and the stair case railing so all he had to do was the spindles and the floor. When I returned home from work he was gone and I inspected the railings and the floor. Not happy with it but was ok. What I did was get out my sander and did touch ups of what he missed. He took Friday off and returned on Monday and finished replacing boards.4 boards total. He had a few days of rain that held him up. I spoke to him and I asked him when he came back to make sure he left me some paint so I could do touch ups for we were getting the sided and if there were scratches I would have the paint to fix it. I came home and he was done with the railing and he stated he need to do another coat the next day. He did the next coat 2 days later after the rain. I was a little darker than expected but ok. He was not here when I came home. Finally after numerous request for the paint to be left he gave me a 1/4 of a can. I took it to the paint store that sold the same paint and after three tries we got the paint color right. The paint he used did not have a formula on the can to be able to match it. After doing touch up over the weekend Monday and I took the day of from work to talk to him ,. I started doing touch ups at 6ma on the railing by the time he arrived at 930 in the morning. I had the railing redone and some of the spindles. He only worked 930 to 130 that day He stated he sprayed the railings and it took 9 gal of paint to them and he was done and was going to start the floor. When he started to paint I mentioned to him that the brush he left in the can for me to use, when I took it to the paint store they stated he was not using the right paint brush. He said he uses them all the time and just throws them away. What he used for a paint brush was what we use for a basting brush for food and he needed to get a better brush. He said he had one and would use it. It was a Purdy. I told him he need to repaint the railing by hand for there was a lot of places missed when he sprayed. The paint he was using is the kind they say fills in cracks up to 8th of an inch and it does if it is done the correct way. I showed him what I had done prior to him getting there on the railing and how it filled in the seem between the boards and the cracks. He said it looked awesome. He was bothered by me being there and doing his job. He stated he would do it and not me. I told him to start the front deck which was brand new, and then come meet up with me to finish the larger deck. I redid the inside top rails and he repainted the outside of the top rails and .I redid the steps railings. We work all morning on the railing by repainting them and then they looked really great. He was amazed at not only how much paint we used was very little. less than a half a gal on the inside of my paint and less than a half gal on his side. but the time it took was not long at all. He said it was faster to do it by hand then it was to spray it and it wasted 9 gal. (I stained this same deck 10 years ago and only used 8 gal at the time and it was new wood. He started doing the deck floor again with a crappy brush and did a 1/4 of the floor and left for the day at 130pm. Tuesday came he said he was going to arrive at 6am and my husband left at 830 am and he still wasn't here. When I got home Tuesday night at 5PM he was still here. He said he was finished wanted payment in full. I looked at him an said it was raining off and on all day how could you possible be paint in the rain. He said it was dry most of the day. I looked around and found that there were so many issues that I was not giving him payment in full until the issued were fixed. The steps had paint puddles of water on them parts of the deck floor were the same way. He missed a second coat a couple of places. I also told him I was with hold a 950.00 back until it was done to my satisfaction. He wasn't happy but he had to come back 3 days later to fix all . At this point when he finished I did see other stuff but just gave him his money and deducted my cost of the paint I paid for and said good by. He knows I was not happy. Gary was more than willing to please me but his attitude about his job really sucked. When working with him all he kept say is how he hates doing what he does. Yes he does this all by him self, he is a great sales person but not a good worker at least on my property. My Husband was the one that said just pay him to get him out of her. I ended up redoing my whole deck floor today for the 3rd coat. There is so much more to this but this is the drift of what happened. Please feel free to contact me about a reference if you considering on hiring him. He also said I was the first customer that ever actually worked with him on any project. I should have realized when I was not getting call back on his references. 6/29/2013 dcote55@aol.com
