Dan was great! He found the problem and showed me what is was before he made any repairs. We haven't had any problems with the garage door since!
Description of Work: Our garage door was not going down when we opened it. It took over 10 tries to get it to close. Dan, our Service Technician, did a complete maitenance check on the garage door. He adjusted the photo eyes which were out of line and also adjusted the arm on the opener. He then serviced and lubed the door and the opener.

Called, and had an appoitment for the very next day. The service man called before arriving, and he was on time. He quickly assessed what was wrong, and provided me with a quote. He then asked a few more questions about the overall condition of the garage, and offered to tighten all the bolts and lubricate the whole thing. He started working on the door immediately, and was done with in an hour. The door sounded great, when he was done!

My husband backed out of the garage on his way out of town and forgot to open the door first. We got the door open but couldn't close it. Being winter and kids and I home alone, I had to get the door fixed to close it. I called shortly before closing on a Friday and they had someone out within the hour. Corey worked on the door for a bit and explained what happened. He shared that it was fine for now but couldn't guarantee how long it would be okay and showed me where the outside metal had been pulled away and couldnt be resecured. He also showed me his concerns and gave me some recommendations. Corey was professional and courteous as were the people on the phone. He took measurements for the door in case we decide to replace panels or the door to save a trip out. We also thought the charge would be much more...pleasantly surprised.
Description of Work: Fixed our garage door and rebolted some hinges on. Took measurements for new panels.

They identified the problem within two minutes and gave me a reasonable expectation of how much it was going to cost. They were right on the money. It took them about thirty minutes to repair. They gave me a good guaranty and warranty. I have not had any problems.

We somehow managed to lose our garage door opener and needed a replacement. I dropped by Norm's and with the model number of our garage door opener, and the guy behind the counter (Darrian) gave us a remote. I took it home and tried to get it to sync up with the motor, but it wouldn't work. I called back and was told that we'd have to get a new motor because the circuit board was probably bad. We made an appointment for Saturday morning, when a more knowledgeable employee showed up and found that we'd been sold the wrong remote. He had the correct model in his car and we swapped, so everything should have been good. Wrong. The management at Norm's insisted that we be charged $72 for a "service call." I explained to our rep that the only reason they came out was because we'd been sold the wrong remote. After some haggling back at forth, we eventually agreed to have a "winterization" done on our garage doors for "half price" ($40). We'd never had this done to our doors in our three years of owning the house, so I thought it might be worth it. Not really — our rep just greased up the components and tightened a few screws, something I probably could have done myself. The service guy was very nice and professional, but I still felt "taken" by having to pay for a completely unnecessary service call. I was actually relieved that I didn't have to pay for a new motor and was glad he was honest about the real problem.

We appreciate this customer taking time to share his story and regret that he feels the services and charges were unfair. The cost of the equipment this customer purchased at our parts counter in an attempt to repair the problem himself was fair and fully refundable under our return policy. Additionally, it is not possible for the salesperson at the parts counter to diagnose the problem at the customer's home -- that is the purpose of a service call by a professional technician. A service call by a professional technician to a customer's location, as in this case, includes a fair labor charge along with charges for materials used to complete needed repairs. Normally a service call includes a 1-hour minimum labor charge. Based on the latitude given to our professional technicians, this customer was charged roughly half the normal labor charge for the trip and his door systems were given a basic tune-up. We believe strongly that this was a fair and respectful resolution.

Company removed old garage door and installed new one. The employees and owner were all very pleasant and the work performed was excellent. The only problem encountered was they repeatedly did not call when they said they would which stretched the process out over a month longer than originally planned. They eventually did move me up in the rotation in order to speed up the process when they realized the mistake.

Did a wonderful job. I didn't need a full blown, brand new set of door (double and single door). When I told them the situation (moving soon so I didn't want to put a lot of money into a new set of doors for which I wouldn't likely recover my costs), they recommended these after-market doors. They were very professional in every way. They showed up when they said they would, did a great job of installation, explained every thing to me along the way. And price was an issue and even that was a winner for me. I will NEVER again consider another company when I need a garage door replaced or serviced!

Called Norm's after we moved into a new house where the garage door remotes didn't work (even after buying new replacement batteries the day before). Like the other reviewer, we also paid approx $70 for the serviceman to come out and look at the doors. We were aware of this charge when we called to schedule the serviceman to come out (they will tell you about this charge if you ask). Once the serviceman came out, he informed us the new batteries were actually expired (which we didn't notice when we bought them) and he used a battery from his truck that worked. It turned out, not only were our batteries expired, but they were slightly the wrong size so didn't even fit the contacts inside the remote (but it looked to us like it did). We took the serviceman's battery the hardware store to compare and bought the correct batteries, then all the remotes worked. Long story short, unless you are absolutely sure you can't solve the problem on your own, you're likely to be stuck with the $70 service charge.

We thank the customer for share their experience and understand the frustration of receiving a bill for a minor issue. However, it is necessary for our company to recover its resource and equipment costs through the application of fair and appropriate labor rates. In our case, a 1-hour minimum charge is assessed on every service call; however, our professional technicians make certain to include in each service call a multi-point inspection along with the appropriate maintenance to ensure the customer gets his or her money's worth. We believe strongly that our rates and business practices are fair and transparent.

It took a couple of months but after talking to one of the mangers, we get some details on how it was to be fixed and everything is working fine at this time ! ! ! !
Description of Work: There was some confusion about the doors available at first because the door we liked in the style we liked was NOT available but became available before we made the purchase (THANKS) The door installation was problematic since we have low ceiling clearance. The doors were installed but needed to be adjusted 3-4 times. Not until the service manager came out did the problem bet fixed. During the previous service visits the doors would always present another problem but they were punctual and made an effort to fix the problem. Seems that the service person sent out was not thinking clearly on how to fix the problem... But in the end all was fixed and they are in good working order at this time !! THANKS ! ! ! !

Before the service technician left, I asked him if there were any kind of warranty on the springs, and he told me that they were guaranteed for three years, I believe. It seemed to me that I had had the springs replaced not that long ago. After the tech left, I checked my records and, sure enough, it had been less than three years since I had had the springs replaced. I called Norm's to point that out, and within a week a check arrived in the mail from Norm's to reimburse me for the cost of the two springs. I ended up paying only for the labor. I really appreciated their standing behind their warranties and sending me a refund so quickly.
Description of Work: My garage door wouldn't open one day, and I could see the trouble right away: one of the springs above the door had broken. I called Norm's, as I always do, and they showed up the first thing the next morning. The tech recommended replacing both springs since it was likely that he'd have to come out soon to replace the other when it broke. I agreed. Within an hour, my door was fixed.

I am returning the 2 new openers but will also dispute the charge with my credit card company. The owner doesn't care. The service manager doesn't care. I will never use Norms Door Service again and recommend that everyone else not use them either.
Description of Work: On January 16, 2012, we took 2 garage openers to Norms Door Service, 8920 Washington Circle, Omaha NE 68127. One garage opener did not work; the other worked perfectly. They used the one that worked perfectly to program 2 new garage openers (charged to my credit card). When I got home, neither of the 2 new openers worked AND NEITHER DID MY ORIGINAL OPENER! I could not get into my house. I called Norm's Door and they said they could come out but they would charge me a SERVICE CHARGE! I declined -- and drove across town to get my emergency opener from my cousin. That's they only way I could get back into my house without calling a locksmith. I spoke to Ruth Smith (owner) and she said she'd look into it. Dan Axtell, Service Mgr., called back and repeated I would have to pay a service charge. I asked them to come to the house and make sure that all of my openers worked properly because it was their negligence that messed up my original opener (and the 2 new ones I purchased). They are unsympathetic and just want to gouge me for more money. I will NEVER use Norm's Door again for anything (at my house or any of my rental houses). They are a rip-off and not customer friendly at all. Stay away from them!

Our policy for counter sales is an exchange or full refund for merchandise returned with the receipt within 30 days. If the customer had returned to the store we could have re-checked the settings on the transmitters or we could have possibly diagnosed the problem over the phone, both options were suggested to the customer, he refused and hung up on the Service Manager-twice. We do not provide free service calls for products purchased over the counter.

They were an hourly early and called first. They did a great job when they came out and the technician gave me some good advice regarding the door. When the door didn't work they came back out and fixed it for free. The reason it wasn't working wasn't even their fault. They did this and fixed it for me for free because a handyman I used to install it wired it backwards. The pricing that they gave me for this service was good also.

Our garage door opener stopped working. Our opener is very old, probably 20 years, and we called to get it fixed, and more realistically, replaced. When my husband called Norms and told them our situation, he didn't ask any questions, only set up a time for a technician to come out. While the technician was very polite, he said there was nothing he could do and that we now owed $72. Um, what!!!! $72 to tell us that there was nothing he could do. And he couldn't leave unless we paid him right on the spot. We find out later that Norms could have sent out a salesperson for free to get a new door opener. Had we been given that option, we would have taken it. Also, the $72 charge was never told to us. This was a complete surprise. We don't expect that a tech would come out for free, but give me a break. A five minute visit to tell us he can't do anything then charge $72. I called the company and the woman I spoke with was rude and unapologetic. I said that they need to let people know of the charge, not spring it on them. She said to me, "Did you ask if there was a charge." Well, my bad on that one. We didn't ask, that was our fault. But as the customer, I shouldn't have to. They should be forthcoming and give all of the options. We were not given that. All she kept saying was that her father started the company and they've been in business since 1963. I don't care. They still charged us $72 for nothing when they could have sent out a salesperson to give us a quote. She never apologized. Again, I didn't expect a tech to come out for free. There is an overhead that needs to be paid. But there should be a sliding scale based on what was done. At the very least, we should have been told about the charge so we could make an informed decision on what we wanted to do. I will never do business there and I will be sure all of my friends family and others know of the shady business practices of Norms Door Service.

Response from Norm's Door Service
Though the complaint letter came from his wife and it is noted that he called in for the appointment, was there during the service call and signed off the Job Order. Our GPS records show that the tech was at the home for 50 minutes. When drive time is included more than an hour was invested in the service call. The teach inspected, lubricated and adjusted the many moving parts of the garage door using our 18 point check list. This was done on two doors, the single door in front of the home as well as the double door on the detached garage in back. The tech identified a potential safety issue (lack of safety cables) and found one opener unable to be repaired due to age and lack of available parts. The tech informed him and offered a $30.00 credit towards a new opener- he declined both. The tech had him sign off the Job Order (I acknowledge the satisfactory completion of the above described work), collected the service fee and went to his next call. We send or Sales staff out for free garage door replacements only- not for openers or for service. Service issues need the attention of our techs who carry tools, ladders and the many parts needed for repairs. We are always ready to discuss any questions our customers may have regarding pricing, repairs etc. and though we offer several free services OTC at our shop we charge for service calls. It is the norm to pay a service fee to have a professional repairmen summoned to your home. I take exception to the comment regarding "shady business practices" at Norm's. For nearly 50 years we have been serving our neighbors here in the Omaha area. We are A+ rated with the BBB, 2 time "Best of Omaha" winners in the Garage Door category and were awarded "Small Business of the Month" last November by the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. We are the only door company in the area that performs drug and background tests and are in uniform. I am very proud of my crew and know they are out there doing a good job for our customers. Are we perfect? Of course not but in this case I can't see that we could have done anything differently. We were not there for a mere 5 minutes, did "nothing", the money and left. If a customer has a legitimate complaint and the facts support it I am more than willing to work with people. I don't think the facts support Ms. Walker's claims. I wish it were possible to please every single customer but it's impossible and that is unfortunate. I'm including our GPS records and the Job Order with notations from the tech. I thank Angie's List for the opportunity to present our side of the story. Sincerely, Ruth Smith.

Called the night before after shop was closed, they called the next day as soon as they opened, and gave me 3 hour window on expected arrival (9am to noon). Arrived at Noon, serviceman examined door briefly, explained parts needed, and warranty on parts and labor proceeded with repair which was obviously something he was well experienced doing. Also explained their yearly door maintainance program, ( which I declined). 40 minutes later, showed me the door was operating normally, politely ask how was payment to be made, took payment, completed paper work and departed. An excellent service experience.

Upon returning home Thursday night (1/13/2011) our garage door opener would not open the door. We discovered one of the large springs was broken and prevented the opener from working. Using Angie's List we located Norm's Door Service and saw they had good ratings. We now know why. I called them first thing the next day and they were able to send a technician that afternoon. He brought the parts needed and within a couple hours the job was complete. The technician for friendly, knowledgable and efficient. We are very pleased with the recommendation from Angie's List and the job performed by Norm's Door Service. We would recommend both to our friends.
