The work was originally started December of 2010. He informed us it would take 8-10 weeks, and still has not finished the work, and the estimate he quoted us is not even close to what we have paid him. He gave us a contract for our basement renovation. He completed our tile work and shower in March, which was done very poorly. The shower and tile is very lumpy and the shower door does not contact correctly. We saw him in April and gave him more money to finish the job. He disappeared for a while and admitted he got busy with some other work. Then near July he started doing our cabinetry work, which was poorly done as well, no granite top as he promised. We were fine with it though. The list of poor work goes on and has not came close to finishing the list of jobs that were to be done. In the end we just kept getting excuses after excuses. The last time we heard or seen him was December 2011 when he came to drill a hole in the drywall and foundation to install a vent for the bathroom. He told me to call him and he would come back out to help hook up the bathroom fan. I have not heard from him since. Overall, we really trusted this man, and even gave him a key to our basement to come and go as he pleases. He did not finish the job. I am not quite sure if I would want him to come back to finish the job, but would like the $4000 I paid him to finish the job.

Response from McAllister Renovation & Design
We were surprised to read the allegations outlined in this complaint as all of this could have been avoided with a phone call from either of the clients. Instead of responding to each minute complaint point-by-point, I will start by saying I have always acknowledged that there was work to be finished and have been willing to finish that work. There is not nearly as much unfinished as is alleged, however. Prior to receiving a voicemail from the clients while on vacation in October of this year, I had not spoken to them since November 2011 which was a friendly conversation (playing ping-pong and receiving a Christmas present). During that conversation, they said they would call me after the holidays. I was told they had a family emergency and a health scare so I waited to hear from them and, as I was very busy, it worked for me as well. There was no effort of contact by the clients via email or phone call between then and October 2012 when they left the voicemail on our main business number and not my cell phone as had been used prior in our 2+-year relationship. I returned the call while on vacation as soon as I received the voicemail and offered to come over the following Monday to complete the work (when we were back in town). He said he was putting together a “factual letter” and, after I received it, we could possibly sit down. During this time and throughout this complaint process I have repeatedly asked why he didn’t just call me to schedule the completion of work but have gotten no answer. While there is a small list of items to be completed, most of the difference between the price in the original contract and what was actually paid by the client can be accounted for by owner-requested upgrades, materials cost increases and work done outside the scope of the original contract. Written invoices for these owner upgrades, material cost increases and work outside of the contract were always presented to the client along with request for payment. Contrary to what the client states, I requested and received the client’s permission to take time off from the project because we agreed the project was far enough along that they could move into the space. In November 2011, I received a phone call from the client who gave me a 2-page punch-list of things to be completed before their family arrived for the holidays, mainly paint work touch-up and caulking. As has always been the case when he has called, I went right over. I brought a painter with me and the two of us completed most of the list. This was when we agreed the client would call me after the holidays to finish the few items remaining. As for quality, besides the few unfinished items, I have never been made aware of a question of the quality. On the contrary, I have heard nothing but praise and compliments from the clients and their friends. I question why, if the quality was so unacceptable, would they ask me to do additional work beyond what we originally agreed to. During the relationship with this client, I have done what has been asked of me. When they called, I would come over. I have been waiting for their call to schedule completion of these last few items. As in the past, a phone call from them at any time and I would have gone over to finish the details. The client has used the time that could have been used to complete the project to instead lodge lengthy and inaccurate complaints against our company. Regardless of how personally attacked and ambushed I feel and how completely unnecessary I feel this has all been, I am still, as I always have been, willing to come complete the final details of the project.
