Outdoor Contracting

Landscaping, Lawn Irrigation, Pavers and Hardscaping,

About us

Outdoor Contracting was founded in 1998 by a civil engineer who was professionally trained to design and manage multiple trades of work on large-scale projects. Upon realizing that the residential market lacked contractors with sufficient licensing and capabilities to perform large, multiple-trade projects (such backyard living areas) and complex projects (such as drainage remediation). He took his training and capabilities, hand-selected and developed a team of highly skilled tradesman, and began offering their services to select residential clientele that needed more than what a typical landscape contractor can provide and is qualified for. Outdoor Contracting is the only company of its kind: We offer more services and have more professional experience and credentials than any other company in the region. We are a company that truly focuses on quality over quantity by staying small and focusing on projects that best fit our niche in lieu of chasing every job that comes along so our clients can deal directly with the owner who uses his 25+ years of experience to provide them with their own personal, highly experienced field engineer and project manager. Such an unprecedented level of expertise and oversight allows us to offer our clients a lifetime warranty on our workmanship. If you have a project that is complex and/or requires multiple trades with the need to have a field engineer or project manager to ensure things are done correctly, then your choice is clear and simple. Give us a call to schedule a consultation. We only offer two consultations a week (typically on Tuesday & Thursday evenings) to allow Bill to handle the field engineering, project management, and technical service calls for our existing clients. To ensure our clients are serious about needing our services and to compensate us for our time and expertise, we charge a $150.00 consultation fee. We will credit the fee towards any field work performed.

What I have learned through all of our experience this year is that getting a small landscaping job completed is hard in the Spring! My husband and I had been working with another company and were not pleased with the way they were treating us, nor with their estimate for the job. I decided to check on Angie's List and found Outdoor Life, Inc. I emailed a description of our needs and Bill responded right away. He wrote detailed emails and even agreed to do the consultation just to ease my indecision about removing or keeping the ivy patch. He drew up two options and we put down a deposit for half of the job. The company uses a detailed contract and they are very professional with how they handle their jobs. They are upfront about the schedule for the month so that you can have an idea when you job might get done. The only part of the process that was hard for us was the fact that we were a floating job. We would be fit in amongst the other jobs. At first I was worried about that, but it actually was a way for the company to handle all of their jobs in a more efficient way. In the end, Bill chose to send the crew out on a day that I was not even expecting it. He knew that we were anxious to have the job done, so he moved quickly when he saw an opening. The main reason I wanted to write this review was to say that the work done was beautiful. I love our new front yard, we have no more ivy, and we are pleased with what we had to pay to get the job done. This whole job was less than what the previous company had quoted me on for doing only half of the ivy patch! I would recommend working with Outdoor Life Inc. My only recommendation is that you better get on their schedule early because they fill up quickly! Quality work at an affordable price is a valuable find and I will not hesitate to use this company again!
Description of Work: We had a large patch of ivy in our front yard that was dying, and we had the ivy sprayed, removed, and replaced with vinca and mulch. Bill took on my email immediately, he came out to do a consultation, and then he took on the job after we picked which of his two suggested options we wanted to go with.

We learned from this "lesson" that it is much better to hire ONE, professional & reliable FULL-SERVICE company! Bill's motto on his website states: "We do it ALL & we do it RIGHT" and we agree!
Description of Work: Bill was called to our home, after we had major backyard landscape installed by another company. Our landscape was & is BEAUTIFUL, but we had MAJOR drainage issues that our landscape company did not address initially & was not able to correct in the end. If I could post a video onto this review, I could show you how when it would pour down rain, we would literally have a "waterfall" down our backyard walkway! This used to also cause soil erosion and huge amounts of mulch from our large landscaped areas to run down onto our pool deck. Bill's engineering background & love for his work was instrumental in this "fix"! He explained to my husband & I, in a clear & detailed manner, what materials & work would be involved & why. The work was extensive & had to be done with the utmost perfection, since they had to work around all of our newly installed landscape, irrigation & lighting! *NOTE: Our irrigation & outdoor lighting were done by two more separate companies. The ditches they had to dig, for the many feet of pipeline they needed to lay, were deep & ran thru our whole backyard. They also needed to install a few rock beds at the discharge ends, to further dissipate the large amounts of water at those points, so as not to cause major erosion at the end of the "fire hoses". They completed the work according to plan and we are THRILLED with it!!! We had a huge down-pour shortly after the job was done & we waited with bated-breath to see if Bill's plan had worked..................LIKE A CHAMP!!! We are EXTREMELY satisfied and GRATEFUL!

Bill and all of the people who work with him were very friendly and professional. The work was done quickly and they cleaned up after themselves. Bill didn't mind that I added a few extra jobs on to the original plan, and was very willing to explain the projects and give landscaping advice, which I appreciated. I think overall he was a bit slow to respond to e-mails, but so am I! I would suggest calling/e-mailing ahead of time.
Description of Work: Bill did many things in my yard - 1) built a fence and gate, 2)redid my landscape lighting, 3)drained, cleaned and treated my fish pond, 4) trimmed back several trees/climbing vines, 4) pulled out several bushes.

I found Outdoor Life on Angie's List and was not disappointed. The owner of Outdoor Life, Bill Botkin, has skills not often found in the industry. These set him apart. He has multiple certifications and his company has a fourteen year track record. He is an engineer by education and training. He only takes on projects in which he can personally supervise. He personally works on every phase with his employees. He treats his employees with respect. His employees were polite and aware of how their work affected neighbors. He and his employees perform all the trades with no subcontracting. He has excellent relational skills and listens well. He has a strong work ethic and works quickly. He stays with a project until completion and does not divide his time with other simultaneous projects. He strives to please the customer. He presents a detailed work scope and estimated cost proposal in writing. He is honest and trustworthy. His work is of high quality. He guarantees his work for life. He is not the least expensive, but it is a fair price for quality work and peace of mind. Based on my project I found these attributes to be true. He responded quickly to my request for a quote by personally visiting the site. Even though it was late in the day, I was impressed by the time he took to visit and discuss our vision. He then prepared a detailed scope of work proposal. After several revisions and a signed contract he gave an accurate start date. He also finished the project in the agreed upon four weeks. The written Scope of Work to be performed is the most important step for both parties as it establishes realistic and definable expectations. You should take whatever time it takes to be sure of exactly what work you want, what materials will be used and what the expected cost will be. Bill agrees with this and tries to get it right. Outdoor Life is willing to do whatever you want to pay for, but neither party wants surprises. Any changes to the contract should be in writing. I would also recommend that you insert into the contract specific phase sign-off times. That is, at important steps the owner should approve the current work before proceeding to the next step. An example would be to approve the layout of footings before pouring concrete or the style of grouting etc. This will also speed up the completion by removing unexpected stoppage. I did not do this and it would have facilitated better communication and eliminated assumptions from both parties. I also supplied a drawing to scale for the project design and made it a part of the contract. This need not be a professional drawing but should be an accurate representation of the work scope that guides the project. All of these should also serve to reduce stress by getting owner couples on the same page and diminishing the tendency most owners have to micromanage the project. Nothing is worse than two owners having a different vision in their head. We did well for the most part and the marriage survived. Bill made an extra effort to work directly with the stone quarry to get the color of stone we wanted and to hand select and deselect stone. He emailed pictures of stone for my approval. He paid attention to our specific request and was patient with our particular point of view. He gave good counsel when asked and shared what he has learned from other projects. This was not a perfect project. There were errors made, but none due to incompetence or lack of concern. The essentials were met. Under the best of circumstances there will be the unexpected and the misunderstood. Having worked with a number of contractors and vendors over the years I found Bill Botkin and Outdoor Life to be among the best with which I have worked. We now have a first class outdoor living area that took the best advantage of the site. I have confidence that it is a good investment from both financial and lifestyle perspectives and that Outdoor Life will stand behind it. I hope I have the opportunity to use his services again.
Description of Work: Transformed small patio and limited lawn space into a luxury outdoor living retreat with an emphasis on blending the site with its natural surroundings. Built field stone boulder retaining wall and back filled to create a larger and level lawn space. Installed turf. On the opposite end of the yard built a curved 8' x 24' retaining wall of reinforced concrete overlooking a lower wooded area and installed stacked field stone veneer. Retaining wall was capped with large slabs to create 20" seating wall the length of the terrace and electrical outlets installed in both ends. Built 24' x 25' concrete and flagstone terrace connected to the retaining wall with monolithic footings for a future pergola. Installed a copper line within the terrace to facilitate a future gas supply for a fire pit. Created a lower second field stone boulder retaining wall below the curved retaining wall to create a lower garden area. Filled with mulch and installed freeze proof water faucet and mister with timer. Built steps leading from lawn to lower yard. Steps and side retaining walls built of large field stones. Created two serpentine paths from steps to lower yard and garden area to lower yard. Cleared and dead wooded lower yard. Graded lower yard. Covered front porch with matching flagstone. Renovated 10' tall interior fireplace by veneering with stacked field stone and adding stone hearth that matches exterior seating wall .

Bill responded promptly to my request for an assessment of a drainage problem. He clearly explained the options available and worked with me to find a solution within my budget. As opposed to a $4000 solution, he suggested a $1700 one that was acceptable. He provided a thorough, detailed contract with a full description of the materials to be used and labor required. Responsibilities and expectations were clearly documented. Installation was delayed due to weather conditions several times. Ultimately, the work was performed while I was at work and unable to meet with the installation team. I was able to communicate my preferences concerning the appearance of the pathway and plantings to Bill via phone and they were incorporated into the installation as expected. The team relocated a sprinkler head that was located in the middle of the pathway. The team also removed a tree root that was contributing to the drainage problem, as requested. A rock border was not installed as contracted, due to Bill's assessment that it was unnecessary and with which, after viewing, I totally agreed. All other contracted work was completed in one visit.
Description of Work: Outdoor Life installed a rock pathway and planted appropriate plants in an area with drainage problems.

Outstanding. I described the story above. They were great.
Description of Work: We had a sink hole developing in our backyard. the original unscrupulous developer had buried debris toward the back of our lot and we were not aware of it. The sinking was approximately three feet deep when we had Outdoor Life take a look and quote the job. they were professional, prompt, responsible and accurate. once they started the job was much bigger than originally planned. The developer had buried a lot of stuff that the guys from Outdoor Life dug out. The hole ended up to be enormous. Suffice to say that today, several months later you would not be able to tell even where they dug. Their work was superb. They worked hard and long and earned their pay. we are very satisfied with Outdoor Life Inc and would recommend them to anyone. By the way - we originally selected them from Angie's List and the list didn't let us down. Congratulations.

Working with Bill and his team was a great experience and we would recommend him to anyone that needs anything done to their outdoors. I can't wait to sit out by the pool and watch our beautiful plants bloom. Thank you Bill!
Description of Work: We had landscaping and lighting installed around our pool & decking area, along with a drip system installed for irrigation. Bill was wonderful to work with, he listened to our concerns and priorities, taking each into account. He was able to offer some cost-effective choices that would optimize our privacy concerns. Bill did a wonderful job of balancing the different 'wants' between my husband and myself. He melded each of our different tastes into one, where we each came out extremely happy with the finished project. His landscaping experience, coupled with his Engineering background, was a unique combination. He was able to offer us some inventive ideas as far as lighting options, freeing up some of our budget to be utilized in other areas. And I have to say, I LOVE our lighting! We had the upmost trust in his choice of plants and trees that were planted. The first design layout he sent to us, was accepted without any revisions. We could tell he listened to each and every one of our concerns. Along with his design, he sent pictures of each plant/tree, which helped us considerably to visualize the plans, as we are not 'green thumbs'.

Our project was postponed for a week or two due to the weather. As soon as the weather was favorable enough, Bill and a few associates of his started work on our property. They were prompt, courteous and worked until after dark for several days to make sure everything was done in time before possible bad weather hit. The work that was performed was great, he went above and beyond what was necessary and I'd have no problem hiring Outdoor Life again (which I most likely will next week for a larger project).
Description of Work: The front of our house and the areas near our driveway were suffering from severe erosion problems. I called several contractors from Angies List as well as a few that were referred from friends. One of the contractors wanted $150 to even look our property, some did it for free, and Bill from Outdoor Life offered to do it for $75. I can't remember the last time I paid for an estimate, but considering the final cost of the project, I decided I'd risk the $75 and have him stop by. Bill and I spent several hours discussing the property and how he would handle the erosion issues as well as possible future work. After receiving several estimates, including from Outdoor Life, they were more or less the same price. I ended up hiring Outdoor Life because I felt most comfortable with Bill. You could tell that he has been doing this for a long time and his knowledge of the business was more than impressive.

This is the third time I have used this company. First was to resurface concrete patio, porch and walkway and stamp with a design. Job was done perfectly and I have received many compliments about how nice it looks. Second time after a year or more, the Company came back and resealed the patio, porch and walkway as a matter of maintenance and to brighten the appearance. Third time is when they did extensive landscaping as reported above. I have NO complaints regarding Outdoor Life, Inc. and have recommended them to several neighbors, who have also taken advantage of what they have to offer.
Description of Work: Patch turf areas. Remove Carissa Hollies on side of house and replace with Boxwoods; pull back mulch around new shrubs. Run all irrigationn zones in yard, flag all heads in work areas, till up the soil in the turf areas where grass isn't growing; apply a light dose of fertilizer and lime to the soil and apply fescue sod to patch those areas. Program irrigation to water the sod up to 3 times a day.

Overall the project came out very well. We finally have grass coming up in our backyard for the first time since we moved in 8 years ago. The plantings have all taken well and the irrigation system is working great. What was really impressive was the team's creativeness in finding ways to route drainage and irrigation runs without having to tear up the driveways or the walkways. Thanks Bill!
Description of Work: We had an irrigation system repaired and extended, soil brought in to address a slope issue, and soil conditioners, plantings, hardscaping, a pathway to our pool and the removal of a lot of older plantings. Bill planted a number of attractive, low-maintenance planting throughout the property to keep it looking nice while not requiring each weekend to be spent cleaning up.

The main thing to know about Outdoor LIfe is DO NOT GO OUT OF SCOPE FROM ORIGINAL PROPOSAL. HIRE THEM TO DO THE JOB ITSELF, NOTHING EXTRA. Have the firm bid everything upfront. If you need extra work done and you want to work with them, go thru the bid process again and do a second contract even if it prolongs your completion date. If you go out of scope for additional work, Outdoor Life will not hesitate to work off a "Alternate/Additional" prices schedule that will be listed in your contract with extremely high prices in my opinion. For example, any extra work performed by his foreman and general laborer for "additional work" schedule for my job was $50 per hour and $40 per hour respectively. Don't expect them to point out any issues, you will have to do that yourself.
Description of Work: Irrigation for 1/3 acre lot (spray and drip). Concrete drive addition (approx 800 square feet). Landscaping which included some tree removal (4 to 5 small to medium trees), some clearing, some minor grading, plants for approx 6-7 beds.

Response from Outdoor Contracting
Member was very confrontational from the very beginning with us. So much so that we considered not working for him. He refused to sign the contract and provide a security deposit until the day we began work against our standard policy. We assumed that perhaps he was just gunshy from a previous experience, and gave him the benefit of the doubt and accommodated his requests. Once we started work, he was elated with our performance and quality and began adding work onto our contract...a lot of extra work. In fact, every day we worked on site, he added something new. We spent every night performing landscape designs for him and his wife to review and approve. We struggled to keep up with the pace of the additional design requests and the implementation of all the changes onto the contract. He never once asked for an idea of what each item costs. We were not worried since we knew he was aware of our hourly rates up front and that we would be fair with the added costs. Once the work was complete, we walked the job with him and he liked everything and had no issues with the work. He mentioned several times that he was going to give us a great review on Angie's List. We calculated all the additional costs of the work and gave him several hundred dollars in discounts, so much so that the additional work was performed cheaper than the items on the original contract. Once we submitted the final invoice, he emailed us and made several claims that we damaged his driveway and his fencing. We replied and told him that if there was something that we damaged that we would repair it at no cost to him, but were surprised that we nor he had seen any evidence of damage to his property. He declined the offer and demanded about an additional 30% discount on the work, otherwise he would file a bad report with Angie's List and the BBB. Such an act could be considered blackmale under the law. We decided to work with him and he continued to refuse and demand an eronious amount of money back to cover the alleged claims that he made but could not substantiate. We at that point decided to advise him that we would turn the matter over to the law firm that we keep on retainer and our insurance company that covers all of our claims. He decided to drop the claims, but filed an unflattering report on Angie's List nonetheless. Looking back on the project, we could have made some time to try and calculate the extra costs as we went; however, it would have been tough to do so and also make time to respond to all of the changes he was making. One thing that customers may not understand is that it takes a lot of planning to perform several trades of work on a project. That is why we are one of the only companies that perform so many trades under one umbrella. When customers make last minute changes to a scope of work, they not only have to consider the additional labor and materials into the job, but also how much of a bind in puts the contractor in to accommodate such last minute changes if it requires ordering more materials and dropping back and modifying some of their work to accommodate the change in the layout. We appreciate the additional work because it not only allows us to make more revenue, but we also consider it a compliment that they like our work so much that they want us to do more for them. In fact, we would estimate that over 80% of our customers add work onto our original scope for that very reason; not because we over-looked something in the orignal scope of work, but they see something they like and want more of it. We feel that Member's report would be the same if he were to go to a local fine dining restaurant, review the menu, place an order, after he receives his order, he would begin ordering several drinks and deserts, then become upset when he received the final bill because he was shocked as to how much it was. We never like to leave a customer upset. We try to do what is right and sometimes have even conceeded even when we knew we did nothing wrong in the interest of customer satisfaction. That is how we have established an award winning company for 14 years with an impecable record. However, we know that it is not reasonable to please every single customer and unfortunately, we must all take responsibility for our actions. The most important advice we can give a customer is put all of your effort in the due dilligence, design and pre-construction planning. Once all of those things are done properly, the job will flow smoothly and effortlessly. We would prefer to know everything we are performing up front verses piecing it together as we go. That way there is less opportunity for surprises for everyone.

Over all, we are well pleased with the removal of two trees, installing the irrigation system, fertilizing and over seeding the front and back yard. Only regret is the irrigation system did not come with a instruction manual
Description of Work: The estimate was written very clear as to what I needed done for landscaping our front and back yard. The irrigation system in the front has worked very well. The natural rock border with fill in mulch was a great addition and our neighbors have commented how good a job Outdoor Life performed. The employees worked very hard to make sure we were satisfied. I would recommend this company to others.

It went great from start to finish. Don't be in a hurry, and Bill will tell you that, as this company is very busy and makes sure everything is perfect before they move on to their next project.
Description of Work: The original consultation was impressive. Bill spent 90 minutes in my yard giving me ideas about landscaping and patios and then followed up with many options to choose via email. Any questions I had were promptly answered and he was on site every day of the project. I could not be happier with the finished project. Very professionally done. I had a stamped concrete patio put in and my yard was lanscaped. Bill put in a fire pit with a sitting wall. He also put in a barbecue station that I love, He did a dark brown acid stain on the border of the patio that matches the concrete he used for the sitting wall, fire pit, and barbecue station. The folks that worked for Bill were wonderful. This was a very professional crew. I highly recommend Outdoor Life to anyone. You will be guaranteed a professional job that is way beyond your expectations at a very reasonable price.

To our knowledge, we have never received a voicemail nor an email from the member. If she feels so strongly about wanting us to help her with her project, she should have spent her time confirming that she did in fact contact our company and leave a message that we received in lieu of taking the time to post hate mail on the Angie's List website. Sometimes emails do not reach their intended recipient and disappear into a black hole and sometimes phone voicemail systems do malfunction. We could not be more pleased with the final result! He always kept us informed and showed up on time as scheduled. We are already planning for next to have him do more work next year when we want to get on his schedule to have the brick front steps and brick walkway repaired and a new outdoor kitchen installed. We were pleased with the pricing, the service and he and his people were a pleasure to deal with!

Outstanding job and they took the time to have me drive the RV in the carport to make sure it fit before they left. Well worth the money because I could have rented a bobcat but the results with me driving would not have been the same, they know how to make this clay stuff look smooth and level!! I will use them again!!
Description of Work: Bills crew did some grading around my new shop, lowered the level of the floor of the carport and leveled a large pile of clay/dirt from the build.

Weather was the only slow down to the project. We couldn't be happier with how the project unfolded and was completed.
Description of Work: Bill Botkin designed, created and built an entire backyard renovation, which included decorative concrete patio, natural stone fireplace, expansive water feature, new deck, overhaul of previous irrigation system, pergola and landscaping. We wanted someone who could "do it all" and that's what we got. Bill's creative design was matched only by his attention to detail and perfect execution of the project. As soon as we saw the quality of his work with the water feature, we added a pergola and had him also redo our side yard. His innovative ideas were beautifully executed. We now have a backyard that is gorgeous, relatively maintenance free (with the addition of a smart control irrigation system and irrigated potted plants), and unique. He was able to incorporate the few ideas that we had for the backyard and make them blossom! His knowledge of engineering, decorative concrete and landscaping are all evident in the final project. We have dozens of plants in a variety of colors which will bloom at different times of the year. We can't wait to see what will bloom next!

The project went seamlessly, they were even able to finish all work in a single day!
Description of Work: We had a front yard full of unsightly landscaping work consisting of 20 year old landscaping timbers, ground juniper and river birch trees that simply didn't have any curb appeal. We had Outdoor Life come in an basically bomb and rebuild. They removed all of the landscaping timbers and trees; then provided fill dirt and replaced everything with grass. Its exactly what our yard needed, less mess. Very punctual, very communicative, very professional. We were so pleased that we have asked them to quote an additional landscaping task of ours.

I spent $1198 on that service. Pete was the person that I communicated with the most was very kind. He came out and brought samples and he had a lot of experience and good information on the colors because we were changing colors. The owner and his wife were having some medical issues when we first started researching it and he stepped in and took over when they were an intensive care unit. He is a relative and he has a lot of years of experience. He went above and beyond to help me out with the colors and stuff. The workers were very good too. They were the only company in the area that replaced rotten wood when they took the gutters down and discovered that there was rotten wood that hadn?t been replaced in 20 years. They were also very professional and they also charged $7 a foot for rotten wood.
Description of Work: I used Outdoor Life Inc. about 3 or 4 weeks ago and they replaced my gutters.

I had another vendor come in to my yard for grading services and removal of an existing koi pond. The previous company left me with deep ruts in the yard from their machines and a broken irrigation system. Bill's team came in and completed the work, fixed the damage and left the place looking fabulous! He really did a great job!
Description of Work: Bill and his team came in and did some grading work, laid down sod and fixed a broken irrigation system.

They got in did the job and got out. No major delays except for some weather issues
Description of Work: Bill removed a ton of dead plants, relandscaped the front and backyard and repaired the irrigation system. Bill has vast knowledge when it comes to which plants to put where and how much water the plants and yard need to get. The yard is now one of the nicest in the subdivision instead of one of the worst.
