They did a pretty good job. They things that they messed up, they fixed. The paint job itself, turned out really good. I would highly recommend them. They were very friendly. At times it was hard to get a call back form them to get a date scheduled. When they said they were going to be here, they were here.

The price was reasonable, we had a discount, coupons and stuff like that. It's just a 4-room painting project, there is nothing special. There's no painting designs or special woodwork or anything like that, no trim work. They were very quick, very clean, competent, and they took criticism well. They worked well with my wife as far as getting things done to how she like it.
Description of Work: Five Star Painting had painted 4 rooms in our house. They came about a week and a half after we contacted them.

We met with Joe from 5 Star at a home show in January 2013. We discussed our problem, which is a metal front door that I had sanded and re-painted four times after the original builder's coat had faded and the paint had blistered every time. We set an appointment for an estimate. We checked Angie's List and the reviews of 5 Star seemed OK. Within a week Joe came out and provided an estimate for the work which he verbally told us would include heat-gun striping, priming, and 2 coats of paint to the exterior front door, and we would need to provide the paint and primer (he told us what to get). We agreed to the price and terms, and we paid a 10% down payment. It was too cold to do the work so we agreed to set the appointment for the work at a later date in the spring. On February 16 we received an email from Bob stating that our appointment was on March 15 at 9:30AM. We did not set this appointment, they did. We were not consulted on the date/time, but that was fine as we had a month lead time to make sure we could make arrangements with our jobs to be home for the work. The email also contained a copy of the quote which did not include any details of the work to be performed that we discussed with Joe, nor any indication that a down payment was paid. We conversed via email and Bob verified they had record of the work to be performed and the deposit payment, and we confirmed that the appointment date/time was OK. On March 14th at 1:00PM, less than 24 hours before the work was to be performed, I called to verify the appointment. I was told by the office staff that the appointment was on the schedule for the 18th (Monday), not the 15th (Friday). We received no phone calls or emails indicating that there was a date change. I was also told that they had a bad phone number. This is no excuse for the lack of contact as they knew they could contact us via email. I corrected the number and left 2 other numbers for them to get in touch with us. I was told that someone would call us back. 3 hours later I called again as there had been no contact from them, it was now late in the afternoon, and the appointment was for early morning the next day. I was told someone should have called and that someone would call us back. I explained that with 1 month lead time for an appointment that they themselves scheduled and with no other contact with us, our expectation was that either someone should show at the originally appointed date/time to do the work or they should cancel the job and send us the deposit back. There was no further contact from them before the March 15th appointment. On the 15th Carlos stopped by at 8:30 (1 hour early) to start work. He started sanding the door despite the fact that Joe had determined that the door needed to be heat-gun stripped before painting, and I relayed this to Carlos. We then found out that Joe was no longer with the company and Carlos thought sanding would be sufficient. Carlos sanded, put on 2 coats of primer, and 2 coats of finish paint. He completed the job in 4 hours and he cleaned up after himself. Unfortunately we could still see plainly where the previous coats had blistered and literally within an hour after his leaving, small blisters began to form over the exact areas he had thorughly sanded and painted. We signed off on the work when he left, but we did not receive a customer comment card, which, per the web site, is required to be signed and turned in for the warranty on the work to be valid. The next week we sent an email to Bob explaining the situation and the fact that the door was blistering under the new paint coat. Bob emphasized that they wanted to make it right and wanted to know when he could come over to look at the door. We proposed a date (the next Friday), offering to give them the chance to fix the problems. We did not hear back from Bob before Friday and no one stopped by the house on Friday. At this point the plan is to hire someone else to do the work. We will not be re-hiring 5-Star, nor can we recommend their services based on our experience. Response from Five Star Painting on Apr 30, 2013: "The customer opted for a $98 painting of the door which did not include stripping of the old paint underneath the surface. From the picture, you can see that the issues are underneath the current layer of paint and all of the paint would need to be stripped off to have a good result. This would take 2 days of 2 guys using liquid stripper, scraping and sanding and about $400 worth of labor to fix problems caused by previous painting (not done by Five Star Painting)- the customer chose the low cost option which gave the same result as before." IN REPLY TO 5-STAR'S RESPONSE written July 02, 2013: We just checked in to find that 5-Star had posted a response. The claim that we "chose the low cost option" is not accurate at all and characterizes us as trying to take the "cheap way out". The only "option" ever discussed was a complete strip of the old paint, prime, and re-paint of the exterior surface. Sanding and re-painting was never an "option" even considered acceptable, and Joe knew this. They could just ask Joe, but we were told he left the company between the time the job was quoted and the time the job was "completed". They could go back and look at the detailed quote they provided, except that the quote only had "front door elevation" printed on it by the company to describe the work to be done. We foolishly accepted their employee's word on the work that was to be done at the quoted price. Compared to the time and labor I have put into this door already, $400 would have been worth it to get this thing fixed once and for all, but they never even put that option on the table. We only discussed stripping, priming, and painting as the job to be done, and the only price they provided was $98. Why did they quote us $98 instead of $400 if they knew what needed to be done to do the job right? When the worker showed up to do the work with only a sander, I was ready to tell him to leave, but he seemed to believe that just sanding/priming/painting would fix the blistering issue. By their own admission in their response to our review this was not the correct course of action that they should have taken to fix the problem we were experiencing. Letting us know by email that they wanted to "make it right" after the fact, and then not showing up at the house on the appointed day, nor ever contacting us again (except for that sad excuse for a response to our Angie's List review) just drives the point home. If anyone chooses to do business with any contractor we would recommend that you always get an extremely detailed quote in writing so that they can be held accountable for their verbal promises, as we should have done.

Bought Angie's list coupon for 5 star painting for Removal of 1 bedroom's popcorn ceiling. They Were very nice and scheduling way easy. They came And scraped the ceiling but did not skim it. I asked them to do this and they acted like it was extra but who doesn't Expect this to be done? The skimming work was Done fair; still were irregularities and some rough Spots.

Contractor was prompt for an appointment t provide a quote and understand the scope of work to be provided. Was one of four quotes received. I had requested a quote from them as a neighbor has used them on a number of occasions and was very happy with their work. Bob Furr painting came in with ythe highest quote, being about $1,000 higher than the other three, which were fairly close. Elected to go with another contractor.

When I called the contact number listed on my coupon, my call was answered right away and courteously. I was scheduled right away for a consultation. Bob came out and took a look at my master bath (the room I wanted painted) and told me what was going to be done and how long it should take, and normally would have included the price but I had already prepaid for a coupon. It was a little difficult to schedule - after Bob left the consultation, he said he would e-mail me a list of dates to choose from. However, when I got the email, it was already scheduled for a day that wouldn't work for me, so it took a little following up to get a convenient date. One day, I got a call from Bob that his painters were outside of my house, but I was at work. The painting wasn't scheduled for a few more weeks and told him so on the phone, and he politely apologized and said they would return on the correct date. When the date came, the painters arrived on time and we very friendly and professional. The whole painting only took about an hour and a half, and the painter asked me to check before they left to see if I was satisfied. The room was painted beautifully, all holes were spackled and painted over, and the grout around my counters, tub, and shower was redone. They had even removed the toilet to paint behind it, which many companies don't do. It looked wonderful. They were very clean and cleaned up after themselves nicely. Overall, besides the hiccup with scheduling, I was very happy with everything, especially the quality of the work. I would definitely call them again.

His bid was very high. So I used somebody else. The price was $89 for painting one room. There was a leak in our ceiling. So I asked them to come out and have a look at it. I thought that I would use the $89 that I had already paid for them for them to paint the living room and may be a hall or something. He quoted me about $800. So that wasn’t going to work. I thought that they were very nice. But they were sort of disorganized too. They kept calling repeatedly to set up the appointment after I already had the appointment set up. At the same time they never called back to follow up on the bid. I got somebody else to give me a bid which was about $500 for the same work. So I had them to do the work for me. Other than that they were very nice and they came when they were supposed to. They responded right away with a quote. I thought that they were very responsive.

There was a small communication problem between the company and myself that delayed the work. I wasn't sure if I had to do something or they had to follow up with me. I did have to call four times before I was able to get a call back, but once that call came then things went very well. We set up a schedule for a few days later and the work was done.
Description of Work: I signed up for the three room special offered through Angie's List. Five Star Painting came for a job overview in early January and quoted additional work (trim, ceilings) as per my request. The work was performed on March 12 and was very satisfactory.

Patrick, the coordinator, came out on time to see the room to be painted and go over information with me. He was pleasant and professional. Painting would be the following week. I had the option of going to Sherwin-Williams myself to get the paint or have them pick it up using their discount. I let them pick up the paint after I went to choose the color. I let Patrick know by email the color and which date was good for me. The morning of the painting Patrick arrived on time first, and soon after the two painters. Patrick went over the room with me, asking about picture holes in the wall, and to keep the nails in, and the painters would put them back in, and not fill them. We went over any nicks in the walls and outlets. When the painters arrived with the paint, they gave Patrick the receipt, and I wrote a check for Five Star for the paint (approx $32 for two gallons). The painters were pleasant and professional, and finished the job in two hours. They asked me to look over the room. From what I saw, they did a good job, and the lines to the ceiling were good.

They were punctual and professional. At the end of this particular job I was not totally satisfied with the job; not to worry! Bob sent out a painter to paint the room over! This service prompted me to call Bob again. This time 5 Star painted my living room and dining room for $350.00 (not including paint). They tell you how much paint to buy and provide recommendations, but will use any brand you buy. Bob did show me how cheap paint will provide a sub-standard job. He is to be heeded! Needless to say the 2nd job was great, and I will use Bob Clayton's 5 Star painting again. 5/13/2013: UPDATE, After 2.5 months the wall taping repair which was made in in February started to fall apart. As far as i am concerned the time it took to get 5 Star to come and fix the issue was too long. They did come out and fix the issue. Now both jobs which they undertook required a return visit.

This was a Angie List Special, they showed up right on time, estimated it would cost more than stated in Angie Deal. This is a problem when they give a amount before you have a estimate. They did have to cancel apt for a day and did not call, just sent a email over weekend which we did not receive until that day. The workers did a good job of removing popcorn and painting. We were pleased with that part of the job. The low rating is the clean-up. They sealed off room but did not cover cold air return, which resulted in the white powder being distributed throughout the entire house. This resulted in a two week cleaning in every part of house plus expense of having the ducts cleaned. They did not bring vacuum or brooms to clean, walls full of powder, curtain not hung back up. No follow up from company.

The reason I used Five Star Painting was because I had purchased a Groupon that gave me the impression that I was going to get professional quality at a great price. Boy, was I wrong. Bob Clayton seemed like a nice enough guy when I initially met with him, and he made a heck of a sales pitch during the initial consultation, but now I just feel like I was taken advantage of. He walked around to all the walls showing me the imperfections of the previous painter's work, and said that his guys were all professionals and that I wouldn't have these issues if I hired him to do the job. I was really leary of hiring Bob because his pricing was astronomical, but I was already invested with the Groupon (Which is a scam). There is no benefit to buying the Groupon, Bob is going to quote the job in such a way that there is no real discount. It's just a way for Five Star Painting to lure you in...and I fell for it. As if the pricing wasn't bad enough, the quality was worse. I was expecting professionals to show up at my condo, but instead 6 non-english speaking men, women, and young children showed up. They immediately swarmed the place and got fast to work, but i noticed they were getting paint on part of the Condo where there were not supposed to be any paint. I called Bob, who I did not realize was not going to partake in supervising or painting and told him I want painters tape to be used. He informed me that his guys are professionals who do not need to use tape. Needless to say, they NEEDED tape. I have paint all over the floor, black dots all over tan walls, white paint on black stairs and tan paint all over my white moldings. Additionally, Bob made it very clear that one of the benefits of hiring him was that he was going to smooth out the imperfections on the wall. Of course that didn't happen. Instead he proceeds to tell me that it's my fault that I chose eggshell paint which makes the imperfections more noticeable. Additionally, I paid Bob to scrape off the popcorn from the ceilings, but his crew left all of the popcorn on the floor and all over the clothes in my closet. I could go on and on about how terrible this experience has been, and how I have asked over 5 times for Bob to come fix this, but I finally just realized that watching paint dry would be a better use of my time. This was by far the worst contractor experience I have ever had.

Bob Clayton came out to give us an estimate. He was friendly, polite, and answered all of our questions. We ended up having him come out for a second quote after we decided to add-on our kitchen painting. Even with the addition of our kitchen work, he told us the work would all be done on one long day since he'd have three guys coming. On the morning of the job, Bob showed up with just one guy saying the other had just cancelled via text a few minutes earlier. (I believe a third person was never scheduled for our job as only two names were written on the job summary form). While I can't hold him personally responsible for his worker's actions, it seemed like no other effort was made to get an additional one (or two) workers to our home. I would have appreciated the effort to get someone else out there, even if it was later in the day. So, the entire first day all the one painter could do was repair kitchen ceiling, patch kitchen, and put one coat of ceiling paint up. Bob left after getting the worker started on Saturday morning and promised to return later that day to check on the work. Well, we never saw (or heard from) Bob that day. While a bit unprofessional, we figured he just got busy and would surely show up the next day or call (even though it was a Sunday). Bob did not show up, but a crew of three different guys showed up. We re-explained what they should do (what rooms to paint, what colors, etc.) and they worked hard the entire day. At the end of the second day, the job was still not done. We could not use any parts of our two full baths as they were both all taped up/partially painted. So, the next morning getting ready for work was a challenge! We had to shower and use toilet in upstairs bathroom, then come and use half bath downstairs for sink. So, on Monday (the third day of the project), the painters came back again (at least it was the same crew from Sunday) and finished the two bathrooms. At this point, we still had not heard from Bob- no in-person visit, follow-up phone call, or email. We ended up calling him on the afternoon of the third day to express that we felt his lack of responsiveness was unprofessional and disconcerting. After promising to come back on Saturday to check on the work, it was Monday mid-afternoon and we had heard absolutely nothing from him! Basically, I felt we were left "stuck". The painters worked hard and did a good job. As I'm pretty picky, I did point out things for them to fix and they always did it with a smile. There are some spots that will need touching up in the last bathroom they painted. They asked me to check it over (which I did), but as the second coat had just been put on, these spots did not show up at that time. On a side note, the estimates for paint were also off for this job. We ended up having to purchase an additional gallon for the bathroom (probably not their fault as new color was lighter and we needed a third coat to cover). But, we needed to purchase two more galloons of ceiling paint and had an entire unopened gallon for office leftover. The extra trips to the paint store (twice- once for more ceiling paint on Saturday, then again on Sunday for more bathroom paint) just added to our annoyance at this overall job. In summary, we used the Groupon deal, so pricing was good. The quality of the painters was also good, but the customer service/follow-up of the managers was lacking. Also, we were told the job would take one day and it actually spanned three days with four different painters in our house. If the manager had been more responsive (showed up when he said he would, called us to check-in) and if they had just been honest about the length of the job (it needed 2 full days with 3 guys each day), we would have been satisfied. We are looking at getting bedroom/fireplace painted and power washing (which they offered), but will turn elsewhere now.
Description of Work: Repaired kitchen ceiling, painted kitchen ceiling, kitchen walls, 2 bathroom walls and ceilings, office walls. Did a great job cleaning up- removed all plastic, vacuumed floors, even sprayed Clorax in tubs/showers to help with dust and debris.

The company was efficient in responding to my call, after purchasing a Big Deal from Angies list. Paul was prompt and did the painting very quickly, and stayed to see if it needed a second coat, which it did... He did a great job, and was easy to work with. It took him much less time than I had anticipated, which is always nice. I am glad that I had purchased this Big Deal!
Description of Work: Paul came out and painted our laundry room....we did not. Need any drywall repair.

They got started on our project very quickly... worked through the weekend to accommodate our schedule... were helpful with paint color ideas and style ideas... and did a great job. They did venetian plaster in our kitchen, and it turned out amazing. They also were creative on a gold wall in our office to make it look like gold flake. We are very pleased with the job that Bob and his crews did, and would hire them again.
Description of Work: Painting nearly entire inside of house.... including drywall patching..... cleaned gutters... caulked windows...painted shutters.. and did some specialty painting in some of the rooms.
