Description of Work: I went to this provider because our family has experienced poor dental care overall after relocating to the Charlotte area and it now looks like we are still searching for the quality of care that we had in Virginia and Pennsylvania minus the upselling of products, receiving unnecessary periodonal procedures or failure to properly present to a patient their options instead of selecting the most expensive and/or invasive for a patient. In other words, a more accurate choice of what a patient faces and all of the alternatives. We did not expect these problems when we relocated to this area. We would just like to find a practice that works with a patient to maintain a high quality of care without looking for ways to empty our bank account, but more IMPORTANT a dental provider who actually examines our teeth and manages the overall dental work we have already undergone. It is important that the dental work we have already received is maintained on a regular basis. For some reason not one dentist has examined my teeth after a cleaning (Note: I am not including the oral cancer exam). I am talking about a dentist doing the dental probe or verification of what his hygientist has done. I did not receive a dental exam by the dental provider in this firm after a hygienist check-up and I find it interesting that if a patient is to rely upon the hygienist and their experience and education, there are no diplomas or any public display of their licensing. Another concern that I shared with this dental provider is the over use of dental x-rays which interestingly enough the ADA issued a Press Release on or about Aprill 10, 2012 which I gave to them. Since it seems to be a common occurence that dentists fail to exam their patients after a dental check-up, it is no wonder that patients are receiving way too many dental x-rays which studies now show increase a patient's risk of developing meningioma (a common brain tumor)! Sad to say, but I have never had a dental provider offer me thyroid guard and if a dental provider is upselling or overcharging, a patient cannot help but believe that even the dental x-rays are nothing more than a additional source of revenue instead of a valuable diagnostic tool if the dentist is not performing a dental exam. Even though we have not settled on a dental provider for our family, we continue to receive at a minimum two cleanings a year and until this year it included the diagnostic x-rays due to the ADA press release. Actually, dental cleanings have now become a way for me as a patient to judge the level of professionalism exhibited by a dental provider. Therefore, I find it interesting that I have NEVER had any periodontal issues and not one dentist or hygienist has ever hinted or inferred that I was even borderline for any kind of periodontal issues. I even have a statement from the last hygienist who indicated that my exam was a level 8; 10 being the best. Yet, all of a sudden despite regular dental cleanings, I now am told by this dental provider (his hygienist) that I need over $1,600.00 of peridontal work by this provider coupled with a water pic, $16.00 toothpaste and $16.00 bottle of mouthwash. Another interesting fact and not an opinion that we sadly learned 5 days after my spouse sought a second opinion concerning other dental procedures from a periodontist to verify the need and/or future dental procedures suggested by this practice; we discovered that the so-call periodontal work with sedation that his hygienist had just completed was questionable at best; or unnecessary. This past Sunday evening, we accidently learned that friends of ours (retired professional transplants to Charlotte) as well as their adult children had similar experiences with this dental practice. (i.e. upselling of unnecessary services). The dinner conversation then went into more detail about other dental practices and our experiences. It was sadly disconcerting to hear that we along with our friends have regardless of the dental provider in NC or SC shared similar horror stories. I have always questioned why a healthcare provider needs to know who referred a patient to their practice or what other dentists we have seen? Bottomline: It appears that many of us would like to trust our dental providers, but are sadly disappointed when we discover that their only interest in us at best is only financial. I am now convinced that especially patients in NC and SC need to be more pro-active and educated consumers. You have to do research, ask questions and get second even third opinions before allowing procedures to be performed and only then will some of this abuse stop in the Charlotte area. As for the other criteria Angie's List uses to judge a dental practice; yes, they have a nice office with a friendly staff, but so does a Funeral Director! While we did our online research (even read the reviews on Angie's List) and did our due diligence before scheduling an appointment, I failed to notice the extensive number of u-tube advertisements. Dr. Yaste even has a brief u-tube clip where he tells his fellow dentists how to " manage" a bad online review. The mere fact that Dr. Yaste instructs his fellow dentists how to address problems from a marketing perspective gives me another bullet point to address before I select another provider. I find it interesting that Dr. Yaste does not address facts about failure to do examinations or address issues regarding unnecessary procedures or giving patients a clear picture of their dental choices, but elects to video clip his advice as a marketing tool/strategy. As for the upselling, I just say no as we continue to look for a better dental care provider. I know this is long, but let me make this comparison as a professional. If an attorney prepares an estate plan for a specific client and fails to take into account certain pertinent aspects which directly impact the outcome for a client and his heirs AFTER receiving financial renumeration for the estate consultation, but instead instructs his employee a/k/a paralegal to prepare a boiler plate document; it is not only wrong, but malpractice. The reason we deal with the professional (in this case dentist) is because of their educational background and experience. We expect him or her to act accordingly and not delegate or assign these responsbilities to someone else who they employ who does NOT have these credentials. Therefore, I cannot in good faith recommend using this dental care provider.

Response from Ballantyne Center for Dentistry
Member, I must say I was surprised and kind of disappointed after reading your review here on Angie's List. I realize that we have only seen you one time as a patient for a teeth cleaning, but after having treated your family for several months, I would have thought that if we had done something to upset you, that you would feel comfortable enough to come to me or one of my team personally. Especially considering the conversations and dialogue we have had on the phone regarding your families care. I feel I must clarify a couple of the points you bring up in your review. First, I apologize if you do not remember me completing an examination on you, but I did provide a complete oral examination including a cancer screening at your visit with our hygienist Marcia. This was done after Marcia did her initial findings which I then verified during the time I came into the room and visited with you. If you would like a copy of it, I would be happy to send it to you. You make points about x-rays in your review, but if you will recall, I told you that we did not need to take x-rays and we did not take x-rays at your first visit. However in the future I would recommend taking them at the required intervals. I am very familiar with the ADA protocol you mention as that is the protocol we follow in our office. I am sorry you find it unusual that we found signs of early adult periodontal disease during your examination. Sometimes this can be frustrating to people, especially if they have had regular care and it has not been identified. I cannot apologize for this, because undiagnosed periodontal disease is the number one reason people in the US over 35 years old loose their teeth. Gone untreated it can continue to get worse, and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke by 50% according to recent research by the American Heart Association. Unfortunately undiagnosed periodontal disease is common and only in recent years has the standard of care in this area shifted dramatically. We do not intentionally upsell our patients periodontal treatment or home care aids in order to "empty your bank account" as you put it. We do encourage patients with this disease to have it treated using the latest non surgical techniques and consider using the best hygiene aids we have found in the market to keep it under control. I am a consultant to other dentists, and I encourage them to respond to negative reviews they might get on the internet. Interestingly enough, just like this one. Many times it is an issue of perception. Most dentists are caring professionals and do their very best. However because people are different and have different needs and expectations, not every dentist is a good fit for every individual. The internet has become an area that easy to voice your opinion or perceptions, and many dentists are concerned about this. My counsel to these dentists is not a secret. Dentistry can be stressful and anxiety producing for people. I encourage them to respond honestly and with empathy. To apologize when they have done something wrong and to do their best to make it right. Our team and both my partner and I strive to help our patients choose the best options for their care based on their priorities, budget, lifestyle, and time. I am sorry that you did not have a more positive experience at your first visit to our practice. I wish you the best in finding a dental practitioner that can better suit your needs. Sincerely, Dr. Christian Yaste

I feel that they try to up-sell me on procedures; they should treat patients as patients and not try to look only for financial gains. They don’t take insurance either. I have to pay out-of-pocket, and then they file for me. Everyone is very friendly. I like Dr. Joe. I had some cosmetic work done on my wisdom tooth, and he was very good. His staff is good too. They are available. I would not go back to them for my teeth cleanings.

I am glad to hear that you are happy with the cosmetic dentistry we provided for you and thank you for your compliments on our staff. We try very hard to provide outstanding patient service. I am sorry to hear that you felt you were trying to be "sold" anything. If there is one thing we and our team focus on, it is helping people get the dentistry that they want and finding ways to fit it comfortably in their budget and lifestyle. We are not in the business of coercing people into treatment that they are not interested in. Sometimes when there are different options we do present these and they tend to have different fees. Again I am sorry that you may have felt like we were trying to up-sell you when we may have been trying to offer you options that provide a better long term benefits for you. Although we are not providers for any insurance companies, we do file insurance for all of our clients that have dental benefits. Often this is much more valuable to our patients when it comes to the amount of benefits they are able to use on a yearly term. Dr. Joe and I have written an information guide on maximizing your dental benefits and would be glad to share it with you or anyone else interested in finding out exactly how the dental insurance industry works and what you can do to get the most out of your dental insurance.

I am very pleased with them. They are very personable, professional and organized. You get in and out and the care is good. The office staff knows exactly what to do and there is never a question that they can't answer or go to someone to get the answer. The checkout is easy and they are good about letting you know in advance that your appointment is coming up. They are very good. I will continue to use this practice.

I’ve been going to them for probably about six years. The staff is really great and very friendly. They do very nice work. They spend a lot of time on educating of how to effectively clean and keep teeth healthy. The office environment and the waiting area are very nice actually. They have coffee and drinks available. They have lots of different magazines. It’s very clean. They actually have massage chairs. The office environment is very nice. Their working hours are just a little odd. They don’t work at all on Fridays. I’ve gone there a couple of times on Tuesday afternoons and they were already closed. It’s not awful but it’s just sometimes hard to work around. I would use their services again in the future.

They are very good. They are very professional and very courteous. They are very thorough and take care of me. They file the insurance so I pay ahead of time and they file the claim and I have never had a problem with the claim. We have been using them for 6 years. They also do teeth whitening. They are also getting into orthodontics.

They are wonderful. I have referred lots of my friends to them. They meet and exceed my expectations every time I go. I like the fact that they do dental dentistry, they can do just about anything but intricate surgery. If you go and you have a problem they don't have to send you to another dentist. The dentist has advanced studies in lots of different areas. Also, I think artistic skill are important with cosmetic dentistry. Everyone is pleasant, upbeat and professional. They have a wonderful new person who does the check out. They also have bowls of candy in the waiting room. I'll go to them forever, if I ever move away I'll have to drive back.

Description of Work: The technician doing the cleaning was not well trained, and did a poor job. The doctor (Joseph Hofanda) did a cursory inspection and didn't find anything. Since I was not pleased with the cleaning, I went to another dentist, and her examination found some decay under an existing crown.
