The technician did call and he explained the issue and what he did. The technician was very business-like and courteous. The actual service and appointment went smoothly. However the stress and being yelled at by a service provider is not acceptable. I would not use this vendor nor recommend anyone to use them. Perhaps the owner had a bad morning, but in no way do I expect the customer to feel belittled and yelled at.
"Just to clarify, the service the customer is referring to was for an HVAC inspection for the sale of this property. Our technician spent two (2) hours thoroughly inspecting two (2) units. The customer was charged our regular hourly rate of $89 per hour, for a total of $178. At the end of the inspection the customer received detailed notes regarding the two (2) units and our recommendations, see below: Checked electrical, running operations, refrigerant pressures, safeties, manifold pressures, ignition controls, exhaust, temperature splits, condensate drains, and overall condition of upstairs and downstairs systems. Downstairs system is running normally for both heating and cooling. Furnace is a 2010 model and compressor is a 2007 model. The coil and a/c do match with furnace. Only concern with system is return duct work for basement is crimped in a manner that would impede airflow. Upstairs system is running normally for heating. For cooling the temperature split is not within normal ranges. Believe this is from older coil not matching up with furnace and restricting airflow. Condensate drain for a/c is also not draining properly, water is backing into coil drain pan and overflowing into duct work and draining through condensate pan's drain. Condensate pan is holding water as well as return duct work. This issue needs to be resolved to prevent mold and mildew. Furnace is a 2004 model and compressor is a 1996 model. We do recommend replacing a/c and coil due to age, efficiency, and compatibility. To the customer, thank you for your review! We appreciate your business!"

UPDATE January 19, 2014: I have been pursuing a resolution to this problem through the Better Business Bureau online complaint resolution process. As a point of fact, nobody at Stone Services suggested that the $530 estimate was only for the gas line until we were in the BBB complaint process. While Stone Services and I have negotiated a slightly reduced price for the work, the manager is also demanding that I remove this review from Angie's List, or else she will send the whole bill to collections. This is entirely unreasonable. I am confident that Angie's List members can judge for themselves when they read both sides of an account about a disputed bill.
"At the time of the service call for the electrical work in the laundry room, [Member Name Removed] asked for and received a rough estimate to run new gas piping for a new gas stove in the kitchen. Maybe she was confused since the estimate for the gas stove was given to her at the service call for the laundry room; regardless, she is mistaken about the estimate including both jobs. The verbal estimate of $530 was for the work for the gas stove only, and did not include the electrical work in the laundry room. This is evidenced by the fact that she was billed for the electrical work in the laundry room separately; if each job (laundry room and stove) had been included in one estimate to be performed as one job she would have received one bill. If she thought, as she states, that both jobs were to be included in one price, why did she pay the bill for the electrical work without any questions or concerns as to why the gas piping wasn’t included or why she was receiving a separate bill? It wasn’t until she received the bill for the gas piping that she decided that the estimate was for both jobs and called to complain about the price. [Member Name Removed] did call our office in October and again this week, and it was explained to her, just as it has been explained here, that the estimate she received was for the stove only. It was also explained to her that the estimate she received, was just that, an estimate, which by definition is a guess, not a final price. At no time during either conversation did she offer to pay a portion of the invoice (even, at the very least, the portion that she acknowledges that she owes) or request to make payments. She simply stated that she absolutely would not pay her bill and tried to intimidate the office manager into erasing the bill by threatening Stone Services with negative reviews on Angie’s List and with the Better Business Bureau. It is unfortunate that [Member Name Removed] feels that she can use intimidation and threats to get out of paying a bill that she clearly owes; however, we stand behind our pricing and the services we perform. Stone Services prides itself on providing fast, friendly, high quality service at reasonable prices, and in return all we expect is prompt payment for our services from our customers. While we make every attempt to provide our customers with an accurate picture of how much our service will cost, an estimate is simply a guess, and the final price cannot be determined until the work has been performed. Additionally, if a customer would like a formal written proposal (which [Member Name Removed] did not ask for) we are happy to provide one, and happy to honor that proposal. We thank [Member Name Removed] for the feedback and the opportunity to respond; and we welcome her to find a different company to work with on further projects and hope that she will not have difficulty paying her bills in the future."
