"The original lights were put in for a previous house owner more than six years ago. I met with the new homeowners more than a year ago and I told him after he contacted me about replacing his pump that I could switch them out for $250. I replaced the pump promptly and billed him, but received no payment for nine months. So, after going through this experience, I didn't feel comfortable working with him unless I upped the price. We work on the promise that we will be paid upon completion. The owner did not stand by these terms."
The only areas that I would have wished for a small change would be in communication. Once I got hold of Brian, it was great, but I did find myself sending him an email once in a while to chase down the latest status of our project (final estimate and start date). I also had hoped for a detailed breakout of the estimate to include a per-plant cost. I did receive a breakout that included a total plant vs. labor cost. I had hoped to compare plant costs to get a feel for market rate on the sizes that were planted.
Overall, I am nothing but thrilled with the final project. My new butterfly bush has quadrupled in size and has attracted our first hummingbird. We will very likely go back to Hoadlandscape when the time comes to complete the original work planned for the front yard and what we hope to eventually get done in the back.
"We love working for this couple! They are so supportive and polite. It's a pleasure to make them happy! Thank you!"
"Member is a wonderful client. She expresses herself well and after talking to her we knew exactly how to help her. We appreciate the business and look forward to returning later this fall!"
"From my understanding, the client has not personally seen the project -- only the photographs I sent her. I explained that the perennial flowers we purchased for her were not yet in bloom. I believe once she returns from out of town, and sees the perennials in bloom, she will get the color she asked for. The client specifically stated her budget after I gave her the original price and with a few changes we got down to her specific number. Our prices are right in line with our competition and she now has the prettiest yard in her neighborhood. That is money well spent and worth every penny. We would enjoy working for her again as she is a very nice lady."
"Thank you for the report! These guys were a pleasure to work for. We took the time to get to know one another and there was excellent communication throughout the project. I like the fact he called when he had questions or concerns. We would love to do work with them again! Thank you!"
"When we were finished with our work the client indicated they were very pleased with the work. They liked the quality and workmanship. Our plants are installed correctly and we offer a one-year warranty in writing. We will honor the guarantee for this client. We had not been informed that any plant died. When I collected the final balance the client indicated she was pleased."
"The primary challenge with this job centered on drainage. The client's house sits at the low point in the neighborhood and on their side of the street all the water during a rainstorm runs down all their neighbors' yards above them. This was resulting in a lot of wash. To help with the problem we installed two drainage grates and installed piping from them to the low side of the yard. They were also having water enter their yard from their next door neighbor whose gutter spouts were exposed. We installed a french drain to catch this water as well. Assessing drainage problems is difficult, you never know the exact volume of water you are dealing with unless you witness it during a storm. They were still getting excessive water in their beds. So, we went back to replace dead plants and weeded their beds complimentary, as well as add to the french drain. All of this was done complimentary, even though this french drain was not quoted in the original estimate. Unfortunately, this could still not handle the volume of water. I told them they needed to consult an an engineer or landscape architect. I also suggested that we perhaps add another french drain. This was turned down. At the time of the job I told the clients transplants were not warranted. We planted them high enough, but the continuous drainage problems flooded the beds. The trees sank. I returned again and said the reason for their stuggles was the excessive water. They agreed and I left with no complaints. The hardscaping we did for the client amounted to a mulched path with metal edging with one side of a portion of the path accented by small cane river rock. The client complimented us on the look. The mulch in the path did not wash away. Later, the client complained you couldn't walk barefoot on the mulch and asked for another kind. She originally agreed to the mulch we used, so I declined the request to replace the mulch. The client hand-picked what drip emitters they wanted to use for the irrigation. We replaced them free of charge. They were unhappy the drip irrigation line was showing through the mulch. We re-mulched and hid the line. Over time drip line will get exposed due to rain, mulch decomposition and excessive wash. This is what has happened. All the plants -- most of which the client picked -- were planted in correct locations for sun and shade. Excessive moisture killed them, nothing else. Finally, we do not have our own greenhouse. We buy local, nursery stock and it is excellent quality. So after replacing dead plants the first time in accordance with our warranty, I told the client I would not replace them again free of charge until the drainage situation was rectified. That will take neighbors' cooperation in attaching downspout pipes and a site engineer to develop a very comprehensive plan. At a cost of more than $2,000 in plant replacements and multiple hours of additional labor, we tried to rectify this client's situation to the best of our ability. We even mowed the lawn complimentary. Our proven track record on Angie's List is important to us, and we work hard to give every one of our clients the best in service. We did so here, too. Brian Hoagland, owner of Hoaglandscape"
"So glad these clients were happy with our work! The back yard had a claustrophobic feel because the wooded rear of the property had a low profile that reached toward their beautiful deck and blotted out the sun and view of the woods. After we pruned the trees up and let in light, it opened up an entire new world. Member had some great ideas to help accentuate the backyard like a small dry stack retaining wall. We hope to do more work for these great clients again!"
"Another great returning client! They are very particular about their landscaping but communicate well with what they want. They are pleasurable to work for and know their stuff! We look forward to continued work in the future in their back yard! Thank you!"
"What a terrific couple to work for! The overall cost rose substantially from the original estimate because the pond was in such bad shape and had problems we couldn't initially identify. But these clients understood what needed to be done and realized our challenges. The communication between parties was excellent and they were great hosts! We can't wait to do work for them in the future! Thank you!"
"When the wall was first completed, the client expressed that she wanted to make some changes, specifically adding to the end of the wall so it curved around some stepping stones. I told her we would be glad to come back out and do this. The client was not home when we did the addition. We added $100 worth of stone and she was not billed extra for that or the labor/transportation. After our return visit the client did not give us feedback of any kind. It's been almost a year ago since the project was done and we never received a complaint. The wall received my personal inspection and it was completed exactly to the specs of the contract and looked great. It is unfortunate the client did not give us feedback."
"WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH GREAT CLIENTS AND THEY WERE NO EXCEPTION. THEY KNEW WHAT SITUATIONS THEY WANTED TO ADDRESS, WERE COMMUNICATIVE AND HELPFUL. THEY WERE ALWAYS THANKFUL FOR THE WORKS DAYS WE PUT IN AND IT HELPED WITH MORALE ON SOME DARN COLD MORNINGS. THANK YOU!"
