I can't say enough good things about Jon. He is trustworthy, honest and reliable. He communicates well and he's easy to get along with. He has good opinions and was a valuable adviser to us throughout the project. His crew is solid and they were respectful of our living space and our home. The work they did was excellent quality and overall we love our basement and will definitely use Jon on future projects. This was our first major home project and we were very diligent about selecting a contractor. We used Angie's list to vet a list of top-rated candidates and received 4 bids for the work. We went with Jon because his reviews were excellent and because he seemed more knowledgeable and experienced than the other GC's we talked to. Jon's pricing was also good relative to the group. We had very candid conversations about pricing as changes came up throughout the project. We established a good and open working relationship early and carried that throughout the project. After the work was completed, we had a few minor items that we wanted addressed and Jon was prompt and accommodating. There were no surprises and Jon met an extremely aggressive timeline that we set out at the beginning of the project. Very important to the success of this project was having status discussions and calls with Jon at least weekly and sometimes multiple times a week. This helped both sides clarify expectations and track to-do's. We were very involved with Jon in terms of project management and he was willing to communicate with us as much as we needed to feel comfortable. We were probably a bit needy as clients because we were so concerned about getting the work completed before the birth of our third child. But, Jon was always accommodating and friendly. He even spent one harried Friday evening on the phone with us to work through a late change in our flooring selection and help us negotiate pricing with a third party vendor. Overall, I highly recommend Jon and his team.
Description of Work: We finished our basement - 1,500 sq ft with a half bath and an art/project room with sink and ceramic tile floor
Do not bother with this guy. If you don't do it his way he will decide, as another writer posted, that he's "not interested" which is a direct quote. I've never been so insulted by a service provider in my life. I have a long string of emails which I'd be happy to supply to Angie's list to verify the facts of these comments. In a nut shell, we got tied up going back and forth on the design of the bar area of the job. I provided him with sketches of what I was thinking. It was NOT at all complicated but was not in finite detail because I am not a builder or an architect. He could not grasp it so he had me talk to his cabinet guy who basically told me he didn't want to do any job that would take actual work. They basically wanted to buy off the shelf cabinets and set a bar top on them. Before you brush this off as me being a "difficult" customer, trust me, I was not asking for the moon. It never came down to price either. Not once did tell him he was too high. I told him to draw it up and give me a price. Look carefully at his bar pictures and note that is all they do, buy commercial cabinets and install them. Forget any custom work. In the end, I told him he should look for a different cabinet guy because this one was "a pain" (literally all I said) and his response was that he wouldn't take the job because I insulted his friend. I bent over backwards to try to give Jon this job but in the end, it was his terms or nothing. So much for customer service. If you hire this guy, you will get a prima donna and likely will be sorry. The cabinets aside, he may or may not do good work but he'll never get the chance to work with me because he's too rude. I am truly gobsmacked at how this played out.
Description of Work: I am finishing the basement in my new home in St Peters. Willing to spend $30 to $40 grand. This was one of the 4 bids I obtained and was one of the finalists.

This guy does not like to be told no. I told him we were unable to do what he wanted done for his cabinets, but he just wouldn't take No for an answer. I sent my best friend and cabinet maker for 30 years over to see if this was something he could take care of for him and he told him the same thing, that the cabinets that we sell and install don't offer what he wanted. We do not sell any stock cabinets at all, they are all made to fit but they do have limitations. After he met with my friend and then talked to me he made very insulting remarks and disparaging comments about my friend, at which time I told him I was not interested in doing any work for him. It has been my experience that if you start off bad you'll have nothing but trouble the whole job. I couldn't see how continuing a relationship with him at that point would be beneficial to anyone. The fact that he wrote these lies and statements on this report should make it apparent. (never did any work what so ever for him)

We found JNM on Angie's List and selected them based upon the reviews we read. Remodeling is never an easy experience but we were very pleased by the transparency and professionalism from JNM. We certainly will recommend them to other customers and will use them again.
Description of Work: Our kitchen required a total remodeling effort and they helped us to rip everything up, replace all cabinets, appliances, move drywalls, install new French doors in an outside facing wall, new lightning, new flooring and paint. It involved a wide range of skills as they had to put in new electrical wiring, install a new extractor fan exhaust through the roof and even lay a line for the natural gas from the opposite side of the house.John and the team had a lot of patience with us and were professional throughout the 10 weeks it took to get the project done. John came out every time we called and was very transparent with regards to cost and potential add-ons. We knew exactly what we would pay and what we would get, there were no surprises. Add-ons were requested by us and John accommodated our requests.

After reading good reviews of the company on Angie's List, I called and scheduled an appointment for Jon to come out and take a look at our master bathroom, which was to be remodeled. Even though our appointment was for Saturday at 11:00am, Jon called at 9:30am to say (quite rudely, I might add) that he was in the area and could come early, otherwise I'd have to reschedule. As he was taking measurements, I told him what I had in mind for the bathroom, and he said that he would get back to me with an estimate in a week or two. This creepy, obnoxious little man then ushered me out of my bathroom so he could use the toilet, which was disgusting. Our disturbing interaction came to nothing as I never received an estimate, or even a phone call. As rude as he was, I wouldn't have hired him anyway.

Description of Work: I called Jon to set an appointment for our basement remodel project. He wanted his secretary to call me back the next day. That was several weeks ago, and I haven't heard a thing. We have the funds available for this project, and will be hiring a contractor whenever we find the right individual. I was hoping that an Angie's List contractor would act professionally and follow up, so am disappointed with this outcome.

Sorry about the mix up, sometimes things get lost in the shuffle. I would have gladly taken care of it had you contacted me and let me know you were still waiting. We are sorry for your experience. It is not how we operate normally.
- Excellent job! I highly recommend JNM and his crews. They are are skilled, professional and very considerate of your home and family while they are working. They work hard at and do a good job keeping the mess and dust to a minimum. - They did a great job matching the wall and replacing the railing so you wouldn't know that the house wasn't built this way to start with. - They did a great job with replacing all the baseboards and moving around all the furniture and other stuff in the closets etc... - The taping and mudding and painting are all top notch. Jon (the owner) is trustworthy and easy to communicate with. I would definitely call on Jon again and I recommend you do too. Thanks Jon and all!

Jon Mitler (owner) was on the job from beginning to end. He provided outstanding counsel throughout the project. His pricing was very straight forward and he was very flexible with materials (giving us total freedom over what products we provided vs. contractor provided). The kitchen was torn out in a single day. All scheduled construction activities happened on time and on budget. Jon was very active in making sure everything was done right...from the cabinets, to the counters, appliances and much more. Jason (one of his employees) is as good as they get...his attention to detail was first rate, especially with our tile backsplash! Rather than try to describe the work...I've included a before and after picture...see for yourself. I would never hesitate to call on Jon Mitler for future work in our home. Thanks Jon!!
All team members from JNM Carpentry were extremely professional, prompt, and courteous. I found each to be knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to communicate details of the job with and to (extremely important). As an owner, Jon is definitely an expert in his field, a craftsman, and is as honest as they come. I am already using them for a second series of work and would most definitely recommend them to friends and family in the future. For almost everyone I know, your biggest investment or at least the one that is biggest to your heart will be your home. I simply do not know anyone I would trust as much as JNM Carpentry.
Description of Work: I called JNM for a quote to finish an office in my basement. I wanted the room to be a multi-purpose room for future use. Jon came over with an extreme eye for detail- pointing out what would need to be changed to ensure inspection. He also had quite a few good ideas for the room itself. Once we had the permits, the work progressed very quickly and his team were prompt and very thorough with their work. Tyler communicated extremely well what was going on, what would be going on throughout the week and what to expect next. I was also able to communicate back to the team what I wanted and changes were well received and incorporated into the plan, as well as priced acceptably. (There were no surprise listings in the final change order bill.) All of the people on Jon's team were exceptional in their trade. I cannot say enough for their work. While I may have picked out a less expensive tile for the office, they made it look extremely high end. The room incorporates beautifully with the rest of the area that is finished the same as our main level. I had additional "honey do" items performed throughout the house and am equally satisfied with the quality on every job. There was not one that was too small or too big. In addition to these, they also built a beautiful custom-made desk and bookshelves that are truly exquisite. They finish off the room, but can also be moved with us.

John, owner of JNM Carpentry is a true professional. He knows his craft and understands how to meet his customer’s needs. JNM finished our basement including ~ 1300ft2 of living space, a full bathroom, wiring for an entertainment system, and additional lighting in 2 separate storage areas. I needed a space for my teenagers, but didn’t want to spend too much, so a minimal approach that didn’t sacrifice quality was what I was looking for. John understood the situation. His price was the most competitive of 3 bids while meeting all my requirements. He showed me how to reduce costs in some areas, while helping me justify extra expense in others to achieve a cost effective design. His crew was courteous and efficient. The quality of their work was outstanding. John maintained constant contact throughout the effort, ensuring I was satisfied every step of the way. It is easy to recommend JNM for any home improvement needs.

Overall everything went good and pretty smooth. Since we wanted double vanity sink that we had loved and picked out from a local store, the contractor worked with us well to use it. The local store then had the double vanity sink come in 1 week later than they originally promised. This was not the contractors fault, but the contractor still worked very well with us to get the job done without a hitch when the double vanity and sinks did come in. In fact, if there was any materials that we wanted to buy and use instead of going through the contractor, the contractor was very good about going along with it. Of course, when we did buy the materials ourselves we always had them ready for the contractor to use when he needed them (except for the double vanity/sinks, which were 1 week late, but not the fault of the contractor). I would use this contractor again and recommend him to others to use. They did a good job. We really like the newly remodeled areas.
Description of Work: (All of the following occurred in basement area) Remodeled and expanded existing bathroom in finished basement area. Consisted of removing single vanity/sink and expanding into unfinished area with a double vanity/sink. This involved moving/expanding plumbing for double vanity and new electrical for expanded area. In the end, the bath was changed from just a hallway full bath to a jack/jill type full bath that was accessible to both hall and an already finished bedroom. New porcelain tile, Double vanity, sinks, faucets, mirrors, h/w and accessories were all bought by us and not contractor at our request -- contractor then installed all of it. Also remodeled existing bedroom closet area and painted/carpeted. Fully finished new area (previously unfinished area) in basement into a new sitting/exercise room that opens into already finished bedroom. This area had following done/added by contractor: new 20A electrical circuit, outlets, switches, can lights, doors, arched entries, insulation, cable line, studded/drywalled, carpet, HVAC vent, cold air return. Contractor painted all remodeled areas (we supplied paint). All areas remodeled was about 250 to 300 sq ft.

Wonderful work. Jon was present much of the time - he takes a real interest in his team's work. What a great team- very skilled, efficient and polite. Between Jon and Jason we were kept informed of the schedule--what would be installed when. Jon offered great ideas on adding more storage space to our kitchen. Jason offered ideas on tile design that added interest while saving money. Our kitchen is absolutely beautiful. I would not hesitiate to use this team again.

The leak had to be located and fixed. He came back out after everything had dried to replace drywall and insulation. They may have had to tear out walls and tile to find the leak. With their knowledge, they were able to locate it under the sink and only remove a small piece of drywall. It was a huge potential issue that they avoided. If they hadn't been skilled and honest, it could've been a nightmare in terms of expense. I was very happy about that and overall, satisfied with the service.

Jon's crew was professional and very skilled. Jason was excellent. They showed up every morning on time and worked all day. Jason told us what he would get done that day and it was always a pleasure to come home from work and see the progress. The job site was cleaned every day at the end of the day. I cannot express enough how happy we are with their work. We have a beautiful bathroom that is exactly like we wanted. Everyone one else we talked to said that there were things that we couldn't do or that it would be too much work. Jason went above and beyond on the tile work we wanted and it turned out just absolutely beautiful!!! You can certainly tell it was done by professionals.
Description of Work: We wanted a complete bathroom remodel of our master bathroom. We had a friend who said he could go the job. He ended up walking away and leaving us with a gutted bathroom. We called a couple of contractors and picked Jon to do the work. We just felt comfortable with him and he had very reasonable pricing. His crew was right on time every morning and showed up everyday. They ran all new electrical and new plumbing. We did not want an insert shower, so they poured a cement shower pan.

Overall, it went a little longer than we anticipated. It really seems long when you don't have a kitchen. There was also a minor problem with the cabinets that we selected not being available in the upgraded version. However, the price was adjusted allowing us to spend more on the flooring. When it was all done, we were totally delighted. Several years ago, we received a verbal estimate on a kitchen remodel of this magnitude that was around $50,000. We still find it hard to believe that we were able to get the quality of workmanship and material that we did for the price we paid.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodeling, down to bare walls. JNM installed new lighting, cabinets, granite counter top, stone backsplash and a tile floor. Also updated the electrical and added 4 new outlets. Included in the bid was installation of new appliances that we provided.

Jon and his crew were first rate. The demo on the wood floor was expected to be difficult, but they managed to do a really nice job which set the project in motion for a quicker installation and completion. All work was done in a professional manner and the room looks terrific. Jon made some very good recommendations, such as using a subway pattern on the tile to create visual interest (cost nothing more...but it made it look more upscale). Now, after several months of use and many house guests (who all LOVED the look of the laundry room), I can say the project was a huge success! Even our dog (she lives in the laundry room at night) is much happier now that her space is much easier to clean up (water bowl mess on the floor is no longer a big deal). I would gladly hire JNM again for future projects.
Description of Work: Demo of laundry room, to include: remove wood floor glued to concrete, laundry tub, cabinets and backsplash wall tile. Patch/repair all drywall. Install the following: backerboard for wall tile, plumbing to support new laundry tub, laundry tub (wallmounted), backsplash tile, floor tile and cabinets. Re-install one old set of cabinets in garage.

We were very pleased from start to finish. Jon is easy to work with, and in first meeting I felt that he knew his business. That was confirmed as the project progressed. I thought the workmanship from Jon, his employees, and the other companies he contracted with was outstanding. With bids from two other companies for the kitchen flooring, one wanted to lay the new vinyl over the existing vinyl. The other one wanted to remove the existing viny, but lay new plywood subfloor over the existing subfloor. Jon said more work but removing old and installiing new subfloor best way to go since otherwise could cause wear problems in future. Jon took extra care to ensure that new marble sinks were a close match to existing shower and tub. He noticed two existing minor water valve problems in the basement when he went to close off water to the bathrooms. It wasn't impacting his project, so he didn't have to fix them. But he did. Went and bought new valves and installed them. And Jon is also innovative. For example, our master bathtub is enclosed and completely surrounded by marble with steps up to access. With two other company bids, they suggested refinishing rather than replacing the fixtures since replacing would be very difficult and expensive because of the surrounding marble. Jon asked us about what was just on other side of the bathroom wall. We told him a bedroom closet. Jon took a look, said no problem. He would just make a cut out in the closet back wall whereas all the plumbing and bath fixtures could be accessed. He also made and installed a trapdoor for the new cutout, so it would be easy to access bathtub fixtures in the future if necessary.
Description of Work: The company installed new vinyl flooing in kitchen and breakfast room and new carpet in family room. Consisted of removing old vinyl flooring and old carpet and pad. Removed old plywood subfloor in kitchen and breakfast room. Screwed down subflooring in all 3 rooms with many, many screws to eliminate all current squeaks. Laid new vinyl floor in kitchen and breakfast room. Laid new pad and new carpet in family room. Remodeled 3 bathrooms. New culture marble sinks in 2 bathrooms, all new plumbing and pipes in 3 bathrooms, all new fixtures (faucets and drain) in 3 bathrooms.New toilets in all 3 bathrooms.

This experience with Jon and his crew was very good. His crews were always prompt and very polite. They took time to answer our questions and make adjustments as the building progressed. They were good resources in discussing why we should or shouldn't do something a certain way but in the end it was always our choice. They are also good decorators and picked out several of the fixtures themselves. In choosing the storm door, Jon took into consideration our dogs and our lifestyle. The construction process is slow and time consuming. Jon's team made it all bearable.
Description of Work: They finshed our unfinshed basement which included moving a door, installing windows, building a bathroom, wetbar, entertainment room, bedroom, workout space and game room. They also performed several smaller "handyman" type items.

We began this project with the usual routine of researching companies, securing several bids, asking friends who had construction projects done, etc. We settled on JNM Carpentry for several reasons: good references on Angie's List, projects we observed in other homes, prompt contact after our initial email, VERY REASONABLE BID, and a sense that Jon listened to what we had in mind for the project. He offered suggestions and ideas, but made it clear that it was our project and if possible, he would do what we wanted. Jon was very patient, as we carefully made our choices in cabinetry and counter tops. He has a specific cabinetry line he works with and we are very pleased with the quality and craftsmanship. The installation of the cabinets and crown molding details are very precise. He made suggestions of where to look for appliances and who to talk to there, but again it was our choice and we made the arrangements for delivery, etc. Appliances were not included in his project bid. Jon has a small crew of workers. They were all professionals, friendly but business-like. They tried as much as possible, to keep the debris cleaned up and organized. Nearly every day the crew was here, I had a list of questions to ask about the progress. Jon and Jason were both very willing to take the time to answer. I also used email frequently to ask or check on specific items. Jason did a wonderful job on our backsplash tile. When problems arose, he made it very clear that they wanted us to be happy with the end result and helped us work through some corner issues. We did run into back order problems that had nothing to do with JNM Carpentry, but did extend the length of the project. We are very happy with the end result and would contract with them again.
Description of Work: We contracted for a complete (down to the studs) kitchen remodel. Our small kitchen and laundry room are now combined in one larger kitchen with a "laundry closet". The laundry closet contains a full size stackable w/d.

We made an inquiry via email in January 2010. Jon responded quickly, gave us a great bid and work began within a week or two. The guys were very pleasant to work with, very professional and responded to questions . They removed the old carpeting, walls, and ceiling. They created a new level subfloor, ran new wiring, installed new can lights, installed new cabinets and doors, painted walls and ceiling, and created new custom bookshelves. The whole process was easy for us and the finished office looks great.

Description of Work: We contacted JNM Carpentry to get an estimate for bathroom remodeling.

John was very responsive with getting a quote. I gave him some down (1/2? don't remember) and I had to call to see if the windows were in and they were ready, but they started promptly and were really good with communication. He was just about the best priced quote, and seemed pretty professional so I went with him. They did a good job on what they did, minus 2 things, I would have REALLY preferred they plastic off when they cut through the wall. We had fiber board exterior, and it was dusty everywhere. The other, incidentals they charged generously for, so that when it was all said and done they were a litlte more than another quote I had from another contractor I also liked. Some of it I understand (I had them build sills instead of flush, and had them put fresh insulation in that I purchased but they fitted, I had them wrap an old window to match) but it still seemed a touch high compared to the original cost. They also had to move wiring around the new window openings and charged for that. That seemed like it could have been foreseen by them and I should have been made aware of the possibility of a surcharge, or just assumed by them. Original quote was $3000, after my changes and the electrical (make a sil instead of flush mount for 3 windows, push one window in living room back to match new widow, wrap 3 old windows, add insulation, and move wiring) it was $3700, so 23% of the original quote. They did good work, were timely, and still a good price, I think, for the work done.
Description of Work: I had John tear out paneling from my family room, cut a hole in the wall for a new window, another hole for a big window in the bedroom and re drywall the room (that was formerly paneling)
