May 2, 2018 – Advertised on Facebook (St. Francois County Buy/Sell/Trade) that I was searching for someone to come stain my deck. May 3, 2018 – Cody Logan with CL Construction sent me a facebook message saying he would like to come by and give me a bid on my deck. May 4, 2018 – Cody came by and looked everything over and gave me a bid of $800. That was to power wash the new deck, power wash the old stain off the existing deck, and stain everything one color. May 6, 2018 – Cody emailed me a contract. We both agreed to the terms of the contract. May 13, 2018 – I explained to Cody that I wanted the deck 100% finished by Friday before Memorial Day (5/25/2018). He said “I’ll make it happen for you.” May 19, 2018 – Cody brought over stain colors and options. I chose my color and transparency. I paid him $400 cash as a deposit for materials. May 20, 2018 – Cody showed up with a power washer that wouldn’t start. He said that he would take it home and work on it or bring a different one the next day. May 21, 2018 – Cody came back with a different power washer. It would not start either. He used my small electric one for about an hour and I then told him that he needed to bring equipment that works and to find a good power washer and come back the next day. May 22, 2018 – Cody sent a “worker” out with a power washer. After watching his guy try to start this power washer for about 30 minutes, I explained to him that if he turned off the kill switch, it would probably start. He did that and the power washer started right up. After watching him power wash my existing deck, I noticed that he was spraying it from about 2 feet away, not knocking off any of the old stain. I sent Cody a text message stating that he needs to talk to his worker and explain the point of power washing. After examining the deck, I noticed that a lot of the wood had been destroyed from power spraying too close. May 23, 2018 – Cody said that they were going to let the deck dry out for a day and then would be there on Thursday 5/24/18 to stain. May 24, 2018 – At approximately 10 am, one of Cody’s “workers” showed up. He sat in my driveway for nearly 2 hours. He left and then came back later that afternoon with another random guy. They began staining. When I got home from work, the damage had already been done. I had not taken a look at anything as I got home and started mowing grass. That evening, I was inspecting the work that had been done. I noticed that there was stain all over my siding in multiple places, all over my pool ledge, all over my concrete, and the stain had been applied so sporadically that I knew it would look terrible when finished. I contacted Cody and told him how dissatisfied I was with the work so far. He assured me he would get it all fixed. They were at my home until approximately 10:30pm on May 24 “fixing” some things. He explained that they would be back at 7:00am Friday morning to fix everything and get the stain off my home and pool. May 25, 2018 – No one ever showed up to my house. I tried calling and texting and got no response. In a panic, I had to leave work early and go buy a chemical to get everything off my siding and pool. The concrete is ruined. I also had to buy additional stain to finish what they had started. By Friday evening, I still had not heard from Cody, so I sent him a text message saying that I didn’t want him anywhere near my property and that he was fired for breaching the contract and poor work. May 26, 2018 – Cody finally sent me a text stating that he was in the hospital all day Friday. He had also been doing work for a friend of mine. He did not text him either on Friday. He finally text Mr. Neff on Saturday just stating that his phone was turned off. He said nothing to Mr. Neff about being in the hospital. Mr. Neff also had a bad experience with CL Construction and fired him as well. After posting my nightmare on social media, Cody started playing good guy. He offered to come and fix my deck. I explained to him that after seeing the type of work that his company did, I did not have faith that he would be able to properly remove the stain and re-apply the stain. His website states “Expert Service” “Attention to Detail” and “Always Prepared” These are all false, especially in my case. I have submitted a complaint with the MO Attorney General’s office as well as the Better Business Bureau. So far, I have received one bid to fix my deck for $5,500.
