We realized that we didn't like the colors that we initially chose after few walls were painted. We consulted with Kurt and he helped us pick the shades of tint that we had imagined. We just couldn't get it right from the paint store swatches and he was very good at interpreting our descriptions to actual color. His communication was excellent throughout the job as was the punctiality and performance of his crew. Daniel, Javier, and Andrew were talented professionals working carefully and extremely courteously, thoroughly cleaning up as they went. They were each very personable and a pleasure to have in our home. We are pleased that we selected Home Transforrmations for the job and would certainly recommend them to others or use them again ourselves.

I called Home Transformations to come out and bid on a project to scrape two popcorn ceilings and finish the ceilings with a knockdown texture. Kurt, the owner, came out to do the bid. Kurt was on time for our meeting and was extremely professional. He walked through exactly how the project would work and even suggested doing a flat ceiling versus knockdown which he said would be easier to repair in the future if we ever needed. He provided a bid in a timely manner and was extremely helpful in answering some questions I had after we received the bid. His bid was right in line with the other bids I got and I felt like it was very reasonable. I would absolutely hire Home Transformations for our project we just decided to wait to do this project and complete some other projects first. I would highly recommend Home Transformations.

Kurt arrived for an estimate and shared a lot of good information with us. Upon leaving, he told us that we'd receive his written estimate in the next day or so via email. Even with a follow-up email, we never received a quote or additional communication from his company. I understand that this happens, but the lack of communication is not good business to me.

Upon seeing this member's review we searched our records and confirmed that an estimate was in fact sent to him via email shortly after his initial appointment. However, we had an error in the email address so he did not receive it. Because we did not get an error message, we assumed that he did get our quote. We sent him proof of our transmission so that he knew of our initial email transmission, and an offer of an additional discount on his project to make up for his inconvenience.

We sincerely appreciated the opportunity to work for this customer. In the interest of full disclosure, carpentry work was referred out to a separate contractor fully licensed to conduct those repairs. We recommend Pinnacle Contracting Solutions LLC for small projects and Fair and Square Remodeling LLC for medium to large size projects.

Overall, our experience with this company was extremely positive.
Description of Work: Home Transformations Inc Recommendation for Home Transformations, Inc. This was our first time using Kurt and his painting crew, and we were overwhelmed with the quality of their work. They brought to life two large bedrooms and connecting hallway. They also painted a large living room and two-story entry without leaving a single drop of paint. One wall of the living room had water leakage damage that had been previously poorly repaired, and Kurt’s crew accomplished a “do-over” that made the damaged wall look like new! We would not hesitate to recommend this company!

We bought an old house with plaster walls that are full of cracks. We weren't sure that we'd be able to restore them and were very worried that the cost of replacing the walls would be too expensive. Kurt came out to the house and explained our options. We came up with a plan that was within our budget and let us keep the textured wall feature that was oringinal to the house while skimcoating the ceiling. It looks beautiful and you can barely tell where the cracks were. I was in a hurry to get the work done because I was 8 months pregnant and we also wanted to get the hardwood floors refinished before we moved in. Kurt worked with the floor guy and we had the walls adn the ceiling done in the nursery in couple days. Good thing becasue the baby came over a month early! We have more work to do in the house and will sue HomeTransformations again. P.S. This work is very messy but Kurts crew was very good about cleaning up at the end of the day and when the left they cleaned up all the dust too!!

Beyond the opportunity to earn the customer's business, it is gratifying to know that we were able to make their life a little easier when they were dealing with moving in to a different home and getting ready to have a baby. We do our best to attend to the little things that make a difference and it is nice to know that we helped.

Our infant had recently tested positive for elevated lead levels, and we discovered one of the sources with high lead levels was our front porch. Our garage was also starting to peel. it was important that we have both areas sealed and painted according to EPA standards. Kurt showed up on time for the quote and put us at ease with his knowledge of the EPA lead-safe standards. He warned that the quote was likely to be higher than many of his competitors, but he guaranteed the work for five years and explained that his workers were actual employees (not subs) who were covered by worker's comp and other insurance, and it was obvious that he took the EPA lead-safe practices seriously. (We'll never know how his quote compared--Sheldon was backed up until spring of 2013 and two other Angie's List painters never returned our calls.) After some phone tag, we were able to get the jobs scheduled. We were hosting a large party in August and Kurt was willing to break up the jobs so we could have the front porch painted and ready before the party. His employee Chris showed up as scheduled and was extremely courteous and meticulous. We could see the care he took in making sure the lead dust was contained and removed. Ours was a small job, so it kept getting pushed back week by week, but finally a new crew came to work on the garage in late September. Again, they were pleasant and meticulous about the lead paint and dust containment, and the garage looks great. There was not a single paint flake or spatter anywhere around the garage. Despite some minor delays in getting calls returned or work dates scheduled, once everything was scheduled, Home Transformations showed up on time and did a beautiful job. I would definitely use them again.

I invited Home Transformations back for this project because of splendid work with 2010 carpentry and painting (also reviewed here). This new job was a complicated one, and I knew they would excel here. Tricky interior repair: 1921 home, extensive ceiling damage caused by an unrelated roofing contractor who had allowed a large rainfall to penetrate my attic. That moisture was long since dried out and structural repairs completed, but this ceiling interior still had large sections of plaster that were buckled and stained, and it needed a meticulous touch since it also involved 90-year-old oak cove trim, throughout. Owner Kurt Meyer and I agreed we did not want to risk taking down the cove trim if we could avoid it, for that could risk damaging that old wood trim. Beautiful solution, instead: remove damaged ceiling sections, then undermount a new 1/4" sheetrock layer, visually compatible with cove trim profile (which includes a 1/4" vertical cut at the top). Like a puzzle, sheetrock fit the cove trim, yet still exposed almost its full depth and terminated gracefully into new sheetrock layer, as though designed to look that way. Kurt helped me pick great color and reflective choices that freshened up the space. His crew also scraped off all the unwanted 1970s popcorn finish, so now we have a graceful flat finish for this vintage home. Job took less than a week - and looks spectacular. And though I'm late posting this, it still looks as fresh as the day it was completed, a little over a year ago. That adds value to this review, to be able to say it was done to last, and holds up beautifully.
Description of Work: Extensive repairs to large livingroom and diningroom ceilings. Repair plaster ceiling damage, while carefully preserving adjoining 1920s cove trim. Remove popcorn finish. Full ceiling and wall repainting.

This is the second time we have used Home Transformations for a large interior painting project, and we will continue to use them! We have several family members with asthma and chemical sensitivities, and Kurt was very understanding of our needs and worked with me to provide zero VOC solutions for our whole project. His crew of painters are courteous, punctual, and do great work. We couldn't be happier with the end results, and would happily ask them to do work in our home again. Kurt came and checked in on most days of the project, and we appreciated the attention to detail. Kurt was also very understanding when the hardware we ordered didn't arrive on time, and sent his crew back to finish the installation without complaint. We highly recommend Kurt and his crew!

This customer is an absolute joy to work with and we appreciate that she made us aware of her zero VOC paint needs. We consider our knowledge of zero VOC paint products and associated health issues as a strength, and we are happy to share our knowledge of those products so that none of our customers has to worry about a negative health impact from a painting project. To the contrary, we invite those requests and appreciate that more and more of our customers are educated on the topic.

We needed to repair the ceiling in our living room that had water damage from ice dams. Once we got the roof repaired we got three bids and Home Transformations was one of them. They had done a number of exteriors of homes in our neighborhood and they all looked great and the reviews were excellent in Angie's List. We decided to get a number of rooms painted that included all four floors of our house. Kurt's bid was the most detailed and was competitive with the others. Kurt explained his bid thoroughly and he provided a number of references in our area that we checked out. Once work began, we found other leaks in our roof and he and his crew worked with us around those delays. They were all professional, cleaned up every day, were on time and no matter how hot is was on the third floor, they worked long days to hop-scotch around our schedule and the roofer. The work included spraying some radiator covers and closet doors and they matched existing colors perfectly. The entire experience working with Kurt and his crew was so positive, we've gotten a bid to have them paint the exterior of our wood clap home.

We were extremely pleased the job that was completed on the exterior of our 4000 square foot, 100 year old home. During the bid, Kurt was very clear with what areas he would be covering and also walked the house with us and showed us areas where wood was rotting and would be better off having replaced before painting. He made the entire process seamless, had a carpenter and make the fixes and I didn't have to worry about finding someone else to get this done first. He included everything in his initial bid, so there were no surprises with this. In addition, the painting happened while I was traveling. When I returned and saw the house painted, the color I had chosen did not look at all what I had expected it to look like once on the house, so I had a moment of panic, not sure if I liked the color I had chosen for the $15000 job I just had completed! I called Kurt and told him my concerns, and he was extremely accommodating. He told me what my options were should I decide to change my mind on the color and how he could work our pricing with me for this type of circumstance. Needless to say, after the initial shock of the color being different than I had imagined, I ended up loving the color and leaving it be. The paint job was done with precision with no disruption, which was amazing for such a big job. Although there was one spot that was missed initially (a railing off the upper deck), he had his crew come back and get it completed right away. His painting crew is also excellent - extremely cordial, clean and profession. We think Home Transformations does excellent work, which is why we have since hired them for 2 more big jobs in our home. Their pricing is about average, which for the quality of work, is unbeatable!

Member and her husband are some of the nicest people we could ever hope to work for. It is not uncommon for a customer to have a surprised reaction to a color they have chosen. We always want our customers to know that we will work with them to get the result they want, even when they might deviate from the original plan. We have a deep appreciation for the trust our customers place in us and want to reward that trust by providing strong support and a consistent effort.

We were so happy with the work that was completed by Home Transformations on the exterior of our home, that there was no question that we would choose him for the interior. The work completed was impeccable, we were extremely impressed with the quality of work completed! Every line between the paint color on the wall and and the white painted trim or other fixtures was cut perfectly. The crew working on our home was excellent - they were all extremely professional and friendly, very hard workers and for all of the contractors we have worked with in remodeling our entire home, they definitely rank in the top 2 for cleanliness. All furniture and floors were always covered while they worked, and drop cloths and materials were stowed out of the way when they were done for the day. I let them come and go into the house as is convenient for them because they are so conscientious. Kurt also sticks by his 5 year warranty - he has come by and fixed any cracks and peels that have occurred which is going to happen with the extreme changes in temp in MN as well as a constantly shifting 100 year old home. We have hired him for several jobs now. He completed all of the trim on the exterior of our home, we hired him back to do a big project on the interior, and have hired him yet again to do the last of the remaining rooms for drywall fixes and touch-ups. We also had some stucco repair done recently, which we need to have painted to match, and there is no question that we will be asking him back again. His pricing is completely in line with the average, and you can't been the quality of work.
Description of Work: Painted interior of about 80% of our 4000 square foot home, including all walls, stair banisters and trim, with detailed/ornate crown molding.

Home Transformations came recommended by one of the companies who'd done some of the replacement window work. The exterior painting was our first experience with Home Transformations which turned out great, was completed on-time and within the budget. The company was professional at all times, highly reliable and a pleasure to work with. The owner Kurt and his crew were easy to communicate with, were always willing to take time to answer question and cleaned up after each days work. There were never any surprises throughout the entire project and if for some reason they were called off for another project they'd call ahead of time to make sure it was OK. They went out of their way to make sure the work was done right, never took shortcuts and sometimes did extras at their own time & expenses to make the job right. Top quality paint and materials were used. They were always thoughtful of the residents and neighbors when they were working, plus they usually parked their vehicles out-of-the-way. We were quite satisfied with their work and we'd had them quote on interior painting, which they did in the following spring. We'll report on that separately.
Description of Work: Home Transformations, Inc did three separate painting projects on my parents home in South Minneapolis in 2011 and 2012. The first was the painting of the entire exterior of the two story house, that included scrapping, prepping, priming and several final coats of paint. Since the house is a tutor with wood trim, stucco and new pre-painted combination windows, a lot of care was required to tape everything and keep the paint from running. Multiple paint colors were also used throughout the project and the stucco was dashed. .

NEVER, NEVER USE THIS COMPANY!!!! The titles of paragraphs are taken directly from the Home Transformation brochure Timeliness and Communication: We met with Kurt Meyer initially 3/27/12. Wanted our 1st and 2nd floor rooms painted. Kurt looked at the job, Stated it would take 2 weeks to complete the job because he had a large crew. Start time was end of June, 3 months later. All work we wanted completed, paint and wallpaper removal was agreed on. We received the contract, signed it and paid deposit. We did not hear from him in June. We called middle of July and were told he would call 2 weeks later to discuss when our job would start. He did not call. He was called you again the end of September as we had not heard from him and he had our money. We were told other customers wanted to put their homes on the market and our job was put off. Hearing a statement like this when we had already been put off made us feel our job was far less important than other clients who hired him after we did. Due to the delay other work in the house had to be postponed. We finally met with him end of October, 2012. He stated again it would take 2 weeks to complete the job and agreed to start the job on November 7 and finish on November 21,2012. We omitted part of the additionsome of the work from the job. Despite that, the job took 5 weeks instead of 2. The painters were not informed of some of the work to be done. This appeared to delay the job even more. We fail to see how a contractor with so many years experience could so grossly underestimate the time a job like this could take. Delivering Value Beyond the Price: 2 of the painters did a fairly good job except our woodwork was sprayed. there are paint smudges on every door hinge, door knob, drips on our wood floors & rug, paint on some of my clothes because we were not told to remove them from closets . They appeared to complete 80% of the job. 20% is this job is absolutely not acceptable and this was the work done by another painter Every room he painted will need to have touch-ups because it does not appear 2 coats of color were applied to the walls and primer is showing through. This was pointed out to Kurt on 12/1/12. The cut-ins in the corners need to be redone, paint drips and smudges need to be removed from the floors, tile, woodwork and carpet. New oak trim around a door wall and around the replacement windows in the bathrooms was never sanded prior to painting. He did not paint all of the wood trim around the door wall. He missed the edge of a mirror frame in a bathroom. Paint drips are on the tile floor and blue tape is still stuck to tile around a window. He painted over the hinges on a closet and on hinges and knobs. He dripped stain from a banister on the white spindles and failed to notice. After many of these issues were pointed out to Kurt, the same painter was sent back to address the issues which were pointed out to you. The painter admitted he cannot see well, needs to wear glasses but will not wear them due to vanity. The issues pointed out were not completely addressed and we were surprised that Kurt would not follow up personally to make sure the work was done to our satisfaction. In addition, plastic drop-cloths and tape used to cover a mahogany banister damaged the finish on the wood. We were told by the painters they would fix it. We were charged $332.50 for repair of damage they did. Screws in some of the vent covers and switch plate covers were lost and not replaced. The doors on clothing cupboards in the master bedroom were removed for painting. These doors have been in place for 30 years and fit perfectly before this job began. When they were reinstalled, they were uneven and would no longer close. It appeared when they were removed, they were not kept together in pairs and the sequence of their position was not marked. This was pointed out to Kurt. Instead of fitting them together correctly, the painter attached a slide lock and drilled a hole on the frame of each of the right-sided doors. This makes them very difficult to open. If the lock is not attached, the doors will not close. We will have to hire a carpenter to hang them properly. We were told we would not have to move furniture and did not expect our upholstered pieces would be put in our garage. It was not carefully moved and covered. When we moved them back we discovered mice had gotten into the furniture and rugs. Two of our new Stickley dining room chairs are scratched badly enough to need to be refinished. We would have been happy to rent an outside storage unit and carefully move the furniture ourselves if we had been told the furniture needed to be moved out of the house. This company was recommended to us by a local paint store. After meeting with Kurt initially and hearing him describe the way he intended to approach our job, reading his brochure and reviews on Angie?s List, we decided to hire him without receiving other bids. We will never do this again. This job was very expensive and because of that our expectation was that it would complete the job perfectly, we can?t believe how inconsistent, sloppy and unprofessional much of our job was done. We are very disappointed. We waited a long time to complete this job and put up with a lot of aggravation because we thought it would be worth it. We feel we were grossly overcharged by your failure to accurately estimate the time the job would take. The deplorable quality of the paint job in the many of the rooms and damage to the cupboard doors and our floors, woodwork and furniture make paying $21,577.50 outrageous. We discussed how to resolve this matter at length. We sent this information in a letter with payment. We wanted at least a 20% discount on the payment to pay for the work that needed to be done to address the damages his painter caused. Kurt's response was that we should have a meeting to discuss this with the terrible painter, thus embarrassing us further. Even though Kurt should have returned personally or sent a different painter to fix the problems, the thought of having to deal with him after 5 months of aggravation was worse than paying him. I am not sure how much more due diligence we could have done assuring ourselves he was a reputable businessman. We really learned our lesson and will never trust another contractor without further vetting again.

Response from Home Transformations Inc
I will spare the general public sharing the contents of the nearly 5 page letter I sent to this member in response to the long series of false and misleading allegations contained in her comments above, all of which are apparently designed to pressure me into issuing a 20% refund to her. Regardless of one's profession, it is extremely unkind and unfair, at best, to attempt to impugn someone else's reputation on the basis of a series of distortions and outright inaccuracies. Any fair-minded person who reads the broad series of reviews on our work recorded over years of projects knows that we would not operate in the manner she has described. She omits very critical details, such as: 1. We always offer to take care of any touchup needs at the end of the project, and we extend that offer multiple times as we approach project conclusion. She did not even tell me of any touchup needs when I spoke to her after the project. I stopped by their house in person three times to check on that issue and no one answered. I spoke to her husband and extended that offer over the phone but did not get a return call. It is is simply not fair to claim to have touchup needs but then not allow a contractor an opportunity to address them. 2. We pointed out paint from previous paint jobs that had splattered on their trim and floors. That paint was applied decades before we arrived and they acknowledged noticing it. We told them to let us know if they wanted us to work on its removal but they did not make that request. Instead, she accuses us of creating the mess and does not allow us the opportunity to address it post-project. 3. I personally carried her DR chairs into the garage that they approved for storage space. I guarantee that I did not scratch them on anything. Another person or contractor not from our company carried them out of the garage and we can't be held responsible for what they may have done. 4. They had a floorsanding project scheduled for immediately after the painting project, and that is why we held off from checking in on touchups immediately after our project. Rather, we wanted to give them some "breathing room" after the project, then check back with them after the floors were finished, which we did, although they would not respond. 5. Her MBR cabinet doors, which were previously painted and 90-ish years old, were clearly labeled by us and reinstalled in their exact location after we painted them. They did not fit perfectly, so we tried changing some locations, but could not get it to fit perfectly. Then we put a level on the doors and the level revealed some modest warping in the doors, so it is hard to imagine that they fit perfectly before the paint job. We offered installation of a vintage style slide lock on the doors to help secure them in place. Her husband approved that solution and we installed them at no charge. 6. The reason one of her bathrooms' was not in the original proposal is because they did not know if or what they wanted us to do, as it was not in bad condition. Rather than pressuring them to do it, which I never do, I suggested that it be left out of the original proposal and added later if requested. To me, that is the respectful way to approach a first proposal. 7. They approved the expansion of the project for multiple reasons, and that caused the project to lengthen. I offered to bring huge teams in on the weekends, including Sundays, and including over Thanksgiving weekend, to shorten the length of the project, and her husband politely declined our offers. 8. Her husband approved the refinishing of their main stairway handrailing and raved about the results. 9. Her husband expressed daily gratitude and praise of our work, said that we he felt that he had the hardest working guys in the Twin Cities on his project and couldn't be happier, loved the results. I have rarely enjoyed working with someone so much as him. Her commentary is completely the opposite of what we heard every day on site. 10. Her husband offered to pay us in full on the last day of the project, something people do not offer if they are not pleased with performance. I politely declined, saying that I would catch up with them later, after all touchups were known to be addressed. 11. The painter she criticizes enjoys joking about the infirmities of age on occasion. She took those comments literally regarding using eyeglasses, which is just sad. This painter has a portfolio 4 inches thick of unsolicited praise comments on his work and is unrelentingly devoted to making sure his work is acceptable or better, was highly recommended to me years past by the owner of an established, highly regarded paint store. I did acknowledge to this customer that my communication pre-project should have been better. We are not perfect but we always guarantee satisfaction in the end. To extend an "olive branch" to this customer, I sent her a check for $2,000, which was more than triple the value of what I believe the alleged touchup needs were worth. Even that gesture is apparently not enough to satisfy her. We are going to rely on the common sense of other Angie's List members to see through this situation, note the overwhelming preponderance of glowing reviews submitted on our body of work, and trust us to do well by them, which we will.

It went very well and we will use them again.
Description of Work: They came in an gave us an estimate and then came back about a week later and performed the work. They replastered cracks in the drywall and also fixed the cracked ceramic plastering in the jacusi area. They did an exceptional job, everything was repaired that needed repairing and it is still good to this date.

My son's bedroom needed drywall repair, including on the outside corner of the wall just as you turn to go into his bedroom, where there was significant chipping. I was told that the chipping could not be repaired because there was nothing for the sheet rock compound to grab onto. I know that to be untrue, because I have repaired chipped corners in the past. It is tedious and difficult work, but it is not impossible. That is why I hired professionals to repair it, because I hate doing it so much. In fact, I ended up repairing that corner myself. That was a considerable disappointment to me. I was contacted promptly. Other than not repairing the corner, they did a professional job. They cleaned up after themselves. I had to sand the walls once the compound was dried.
Description of Work: Drywall was repaired in an upstairs bedroom, downstairs laundry room, and basement.

Response from Home Transformations Inc
This customer had an extremely limited budget and wanted repairs conducted in a number of different areas. Our advice was to spend her money in the areas that had the most glaring needs rather than on small, shallow chips located right on the corners of high traffic areas. As she correctly states, such repairs are tedious, tend to be rather time consuming and therefore pricey, and they are very vulnerable to getting bumped off of the corner again when the corner gets bumped. We thought, and still believe, that she received the best return on her investment by having us focus on the more pronounced needs. We know that tiny repairs on corners are possible, and we have performed such repairs. However, when one has a limited budget, the best consumer value is usually gained when we focus on the bigger repair needs.

The type of deck we have required it to be painted by brush - which was time consuming. They did an excellent job and everything was cleaned up neatly! This is the third time that we have had work done by Home Transformation and we continue to recommend them to others we know.

Kurt came and discussed the ice dam damage and anticipated costs. When I said I couldn't afford the work, he worked with me to figure out a plan that I could afford. He did the plastering and a primer coat of paint to seal the plaster. I painted the room myself with the top coats. It really helped that he was so flexible.
Description of Work: They repaired damage from ice dams in my back bedroom by plastering and painting a primer coat. They worked with me to let me do the work I was able to do so I could save money. I really appreciated their flexibility.

Went very smoothly, no surprises. The advertised $99 Big Deal covered estimating the job and something toward materials.

We applied stain-killing products that reliably work on the toughest stains, including smoke and fire damage. The only way a stain can still show through is if there is another underlying issue (usually moisture-related) that needs to be addressed. We did the project twice but the customer only paid once on a Big Deal coupon. To date, it has cost us double what the customer has paid to deliver the services received. We asked for no additional funds to perform the project a second time.

Kurt selected colors that coordinated well with the woodwork, floors, and carpets, and ensured that the space showed well. He found a color that worked well in our bathroom which had some awkward colors in the countertop and tile. They were able to schedule around other contractors who were installing flooring and carpet in the same rooms. The crew was quick, careful, and produced a great result. I was impressed with how well they smoothed over uneven and banged up walls.
