Deck Maintenance
I called 6 people to bid the project. 2 didn't respond. One decided the project was too big (we have a huge, 2nd story deck). Justin is an excellent communicator from the beginning. He returned our call and came over within a few days of the message I left him. He gave us a written bid that day. We didn't call him back for a month while we were trying to get other bids. When we did, he came over in a day or two to go over the contract and some project changes, and then started in another day or two. He called nearly every morning to tell me his plans for the day, and we communicated at the end of the day as well. I was home some of the days, and he would even tell me when he was going for lunch break. From the very beginning I could tell that Justin wanted to do his work well. He was very precise and thorough in the process. I never got the feeling that he looked at something and thought, "Eh - good enough." He's one of those people who sees something broken, and feels compelled to fix it. He has an amazing ability to remember and follow through on details! He saw something that needed repair - the areas on our garage that needed painting - and he offered to fix it since he was painting some areas near the deck with the same color, and we agreed. All of this was verbal. But he didn't do it that day or the next, as he was in the middle of staining the deck. I thought he would forget about the garage, but he didn't - it was the last thing he did. And he still did a great and thorough job, even though it was a Saturday. I think that combination was what impressed me the most: he was thorough (takes pride in his work) and he never wasted a single movement. He didn't get distracted by side tasks, and I could see he had thought out the order that he was going to complete the job (remember our deck is HUGE, and in the shade, and it rained a couple of days), then moved smoothly from one thing to another. My only advice to Justin: write out the changes/additions on some kind of change form, so that you don't feel bad asking for more $$ for the job. I think most people would be happy to pay for the extras as long as they know what to expect. We were.
