The reports made to our attorneys regarding my wife's pain and suffering were accurate when it came to her physical conditions, but when it came to her longterm health and mental impairments, Mayo didn't inform our attorneys of any possible longterm issues.
Description of Work: My wife received excellent care from the doctors at Mayo Clinic, however, when it comes to legal cases, they don't like to get involved.

My experience with them was fine. I have been with them for 30 years. They have all my medical records and are able to pull them up as far as any future treatment goes. They know my history. What stands out to me the most about them is the way they treat their patients. I will continue to use them in the future.
Description of Work: I went to Mayo Clinic about 2 weeks ago for a follow-up appointment on medication. They are my primary care both for internal medicine and family medicine.

Two days of tests in mid-July in Rochester to confirm the MVP diagnosis and approval to the minimally invasive cardiac surgery program. There was a 90 day wait for surgery. After about 45 days, surgery was moved up two weeks because of a Mayo scheduling problem. One day of pre-op tests. Surgery on in early October. Total of 4 days in the hospital. The nurses were on 12 hour shifts, so worked with just two nurses over the 2.5 days while in the cardiac recovery ward. The continuity worked really well. On the 5th day, out patient blood tests and consultation with the surgeon. Then return home, and follow up with local GP and cardiologist. On 6th day walked outside. Now just finishing third week of recovery. Return to work in 10 days. The Mayo surgical and nursing teams were very professional and provided excellent care. No hassles with insurance to date. Total expected recovery time of 4.5 weeks. Note that the Mayo has patient wellness education programs in the Twin Cities. On 10/26/10 there was an evening session at St Catherine University in St Paul on preventing and treating strokes with two doctors from the Mayo Neurology team. Very informative and very well done.
Description of Work: Minimally invasive mitral valve repair using the da Vinci robot. 6.5 hour surgery, 2.5 hours on heart/lung machine. 12 hours in Cardiac ICU. 2.5 days in Cardiac recovery ward at St Mary's hospital in Rochester.

If your doctor can’t find out what is wrong with you within a few weeks or months, this is the place to go. For three months, we went back and forth with doctors and specialists and then in one day they knew what was wrong with him. Time can make all the difference in certain situations. I have nothing but respect for people up here. They are absolutely wonderful and the nicest people to deal with. I would say they are the best of the best.

Just as the pains were coming back, a Mayo Clinic administrator informed me that my treatment was being terminated. They said I should go back to my local neurologist for services and they would not even allow me to speak to my physician. The more I complained, the more they acted like I was the one being unreasonable.
Description of Work: I saw a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic for a diagnosis of severe chronic head pain that I was having. He diagnosed it as a very rare brain disorder and I was able to start a treatment right away. It slowly worked, but then within several months, it's effectiveness began to slip.

They have always been excellent. They are very thorough and they never miss a thing. They always get right down to what it wrong. When I go in now they always know right where I stand with my medical history and general health. They are nationally known so it is a little more expensive, however I feel that the price is worth it. The punctuality is good in the office, however it can take a while to get in for an appointment. The availability always depends on the urgency of the situation. The staff in the office are all very friendly. Each clinic has it's own office set up so the environment varies depending on the clinic and specialty. I have only had one mistake with the billing where they charged me for something incorrectly.

Been going to the Mayo Clinic since 2007. The doctor's are knowldegable and the staff is friendly. All of my experiences have been great. And I am still alive. The summertime appointments are tough to come by. If appointments are made during the fall, they are much easier to have.

They have really good equipment there. They can automatically tell me what I am in for. Unlike other places where they suggest trying a lot of lenses, they have a machine which they use to check the eyes. It is marvelous. They have the latest equipment. The chair side manner of the doctors is fine. I usually have to wait for about 10 minutes before going in to see a doctor. They have a policy that patients are not supposed to be waiting any longer than 30 minutes, and I have never waited that long. It is easy to get an appointment with them. They are always doing things to make it more efficient. When I get my blood drawn, there is the same staff system too. Sometimes I get a slip that says I am registered and then they punch in to see what time I had called. They keep track of how long I have had to wait.

All of the staff were very helpful and friendly. The physician seemed to be very knowledgable, and I trusted his expertise. He explained everything very well, and gave me written information about a newly diagnosed condition. I liked the department well enough that I will likely get my yearly exam there, while there for other appointments, rather than doing it at home with my local ophthalmologist.

I was very impressed with the endocrinology department, as well as with Mayo Clinic Rochester in general. While a visit there can be very exhausting and overwhelming (especially your first time), it is well worth it. All of the staff go out of their way to make it easier for you. The physicians are very knowledgable, and have a great deal of experience to draw on since they see such a high volume of patients. Both physicians I saw seemed to be very knowledgable, and both took the time to explain things and answer our questions. The last one I saw drew out explanations and really made things easy for us to understand. I felt like I was in very good hands, and I will definitely go back again for follow-up.
Description of Work: I was referred to the endocrinology department from the hematology/oncology physician I was seeing at Mayo Clinic Rochester; I was there for a second opinion. I saw two different endocrinologists at Mayo; one in January 2009, and the other in March 2009 on my second visit to Mayo. They ordered tests, reviewed results, reviewed medical records from my clinic at home, and did consultation. They made recommendations on treatments and medications. Since I have several chronic health conditions, it made interpretation of my situation complicated.

I was extremely impressed with the efficiency and communication of all the departments I was seen in at Mayo Clinic. While I felt a bit more rushed with this physician than others I saw at Mayo, and less able to ask questions, I was impressed with his efficiency and knowledge. He raised possible diagnoses no other physicians at home had raised. The biopsy at Mayo was able to make a diagnosis (which the biopsy at home could not) and I was able to be treated. It drastically affected my treatment for other conditions, including my original diagnosis of cancer, so it was a very important diagnosis. At the end of our visit the physician dictated his note in front of us, so that we could let him know if there were any inaccuracies in his information. I was impressed with that.
Description of Work: I had gone to the hematology/oncology department at Mayo Clinic for a second opinion, and from there was referred to several different specialties at Mayo, including dermatology. The physician did an exam, reviewed records and the results of a previous skin biopsy, and referred me for another biopsy at Mayo.

Since it's a five-hour drive for us to Mayo, I was a bit hesitant before I went. I am so incredibly grateful that I went, though, and am so thankful for all the physicians there do. My physicians at home (at a major teaching hospital) had told me I had active myeloma and were discussing high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplant. The physician at Mayo was not convinced that my problems were due to active myeloma, and did more tests to pursue another explanation, which they did find. I do still have the myeloma cells, but not active at this point. Mayo definitely has their own way of doing things, and they are sticklers for doing things in their own lab. They have an incredibly efficient system, though, that allows them to work in ways physicians at other hospitals/clinics cannot do. Over the course of just a few days, you can be seen by specialists in multiple areas. They have a fantastic system for scanning in the medical records/discs you bring, and they all are adept at accessing and using them.Beyond that, they communicate so well with each other. This was the only time I saw a physician pick up the phone (several times) in front of us, and call another physician in a different department to "run something by them". The physician I saw was so knowledgable, and was very active in research in the area of this disease. They see SO many patients there, that it really allows them to know more about the condition. They can say "We've seen three other patients come in with this same picture, and this is what was going on with them". Other places just don't have the volume to be able to do that. I would highly recommend the department to anyone; it is well worth the trip. A visit to Mayo clinic can be exhausting and a bit overwhelming, especially if it is your first trip, but everyone there really goes above and beyond to make it a good experience for you. I was even able to speak with the physician on the phone a couple of times, after I had returned home after my first visit (following up with test results, etc.).
Description of Work: I initially went to the hematology/oncology department at Mayo Clinic Rochester for a second opinion regarding a diagnosis of multiple myeloma. I've actually now seem them twice since the beginning of 2009, and will be going again in August of 2009. They have provided consultation and exams, and ordered blood tests, other tests, scans, and coordinated visits to multiple other specialties at Mayo.

Overall, the Mayo Clinic is top notch. I never felt at risk or that I was out of the loop, which is very important for this type of surgery. All the medical records are electronic, so I always felt that the physician I was speaking to was abreast of the situation. The facility is amazing, but it is easy to get lost. I think the Mayo could have been better helping me negotiate the complexity of the hospital itself. My father is doing amazing and I feel just fine. In general, I don't think there is any better place for this sort of thing.

The "doctor" I ended up seeing was a resident. He had to ask every question I had already answered before. He spent an hour with me then had to go talk to his staff doctor for 20 mins, then they came back in to see me. The whole appointment took more than 2 hours. This was all for a simple switch of medication(a very common thing to do)that my family practice doctor didn't want to do. It cost over $600. Outrageous!!
Description of Work: All I wanted was to change medications but was told that since it had been more than 18 months since I had been in, I had to start all over with a new doctor rather than seeing the one I had been to many times before(that doctor wasn't taking "new" patients). I tried to explain I wasn't "new" patient but an old one. They had access to all my records but refused to look at them. I simply had to follow their "policy".
