Local Motion did our move from our old home to our new home. The sales staff were very profesional and the free moving boxes were great. I was able to go to their offices and they loaded the boxes into my car! Local Motion called a few times before the move to confirm and were out at my house at the exact time promissed (even a bit early). The move went fairly smooth. We had one hitch, not all the stuff fit in to the truck. We had to leave for a home closing, and before leaving I asked the head mover if everything would fit (they were about 1/2 done). I got a resounding no problem. However, between closings, we got a call saying not everything would fit. I was a bit irritated that he didn't just tell me that he wasn't sure it would all fit when I asked - I could have ligned up a neighboor to hold the things for me. However being busy at closing, we had to have our friend (who stayed behind) rent a UHaul. They did load the Uhaul for her, but a lot of time was lost in the process and our friend was under stress because of it. They gave me a 1/2 hour break (no charge) for the time it took to get the Uhaul - but it took much longer than that. Other than that snafu, everything else went pretty well. All our things made it safe and sound, except one coffee table - which got busted - not sure how.

I wasn't at the house the day we moved, but my husband said that the move went very well. He had never used movers before this, and was very pleased with how much help they were. The were efficient, and worked hard. I gave them a couple "B's" only because they were a little late in the morning (said they would be there at 8am, and arrived at 840am) and price was a little on the high end. But, overall, they did such a good job, I would surely hire again.

During our phone estimate, my wife described our 2-bedroom apartment as having 1 bedroom over-stuffed with wedding gifts and all the other rooms as "normal". Bill Apple (company representative) declined performing an on site estimate since that is not company policy. He quoted $1,047 per the info provided. The move itself took nearly 12 hours due to the truck breaking down and packing taking longer than planned. Regarding the truck breaking down, we were only credited $108 towards our bill for time lost, which was insufficient in my mind (after the discount, the bill still came to over $1,800). We also incurred the cost of tips ($40/man), plus we fed the three movers breakfast, lunch and dinner. I called Bill Apple to ask for a re-evaluation of our bill. He stated that he would check into the details with the head mover from our job and get back to me with the outcome. It has been one month since that conversation and I have not heard back from anyone at Local Motion.

We had a very good experience with the movers and the salesperson managing our account. I didn't give them an "A" because of a billing problem and the response I got from the office person who handled that problem. The sales person who managed our account was excellent. We packed everything ourselves and had a pretty accurate count of boxes by their size, furniture, including all the items in our garage. By talking to us over the phone, he used their computer program to estimate the length of time it would take to move everything and he was right on. We had originally planned for 5 movers, but as we got closer to the move and I could provide a more accurate number of boxes, the salesperson recommended 6 movers, which would reduce the move time by 1 hour, so saved us money. We used two trucks and 6 men and we were out of the old home, into the new home in 6 hours (1/2 hour less than the estimate). He was also very helpful in giving packing tips for china, art and shovels (tape long handled garden tools together in groups of three so movers can grab and go). The day of the move, the movers arrived on time, they worked hard to load the truck quickly. We did a walk through to make sure they got everything. They took a 45 minute lunch break (not on the clock), then arrived at the new home. We had rooms labeled at the new home and as they came in with furniture and boxes, directed them to put it in the right room. Most things were in the right place (a few mixed in at odd places but seemed completely reasonable given the size of the move). We didn't notice any damage to any furniture. Our new home was freshly painted and I was worried we might get a lot of marks on the wall, but they didn't, and the wood floors weren't scratched either. The only problem, and reason I didn't give them a solid "A," was a problem with the billing. After the move, I gave the move supervisor my credit card and heard him call it in. But a few days later got a call from my bank that I was overdrawn. Turned out they kept on file a bank card I had used to buy packing supplies, then charged the $2100 move to that card. When I found out what happened, I called the office and I was disappointed that the office person I dealt with first didn't believe me, then when she saw I had signed a receipt for one credit card, but they charged a bank card, she never apologized. I expect a business that makes a mistake of that nature to at least say, "We're very sorry for this mistake and we'll correct it as soon as possible." It took a few business days before the amount was refunded to my bank account and they charged the correct credit card. That was also frustrating because a business can have up to 30 days for a refund and as a consumer, you can't do anything about that -- but that's for the consumer protection laws to correct. Overall, we were really pleased with the salesperson we worked with and the movers.
Description of Work: Local Motion moved us from a 2100 sf single family home to a 3000 sf single family home. We had a lot of books so had more boxes than the average single family home. Also moved a baby grand piano (nearly 100 years old) and everything in our garage (grill except propane tank, garden pots, tools, etc). We packed everything ourselves, but they did take apart the beds (2 full sized, one bunk bed, 1 queen sized) and set them up at the new home.

The people that did the move were excellent. They were careful when they packed the truck and I found only one piece of furniture with a minor scratch. They put the stuff where I wanted it. They asked very appropriate questions in order to put things away correctly. They did not take their time in order to run up the bill. Rather, they worked quickly, while still being careful. Definitely would recommend this company.

I phoned three days before I wanted to move, and the company was able to schedule the move no problem. They were the lowest estimate I received. They arrived early, worked hard, took one break, and were finished with the move by noon. Also impressive, they put down rugs so that they wouldn't tramp snow all over our new house.

Weather was awful: -4 degrees and snowing. At the house everything had to be carried down a long front walk with steps. There was some tracking in at this site with hardwood floors and 4 levels. Moving in went smoothly. We used many drop cloths and the tracking in was minimal. Everything arrived in great shape and was put in the proper location. The crew was pleasant and accommodating throughout.

Local Motion has been wonderful to work with. The agents who help you when you call to discuss a reservation are helpful and courteous. They've moved me to/from someplace five times and every one of their movers has been friendly, efficient and careful with my belongings. And after spending four years in their warehouse in Eden Prairie, all of my furnishings/belongings are still in the same condition they were when I put them in storage - no moisture damage/warping, no scratches or dents. I'm really impressed with their service.

All 3 gentlemen were careful and efficient in all aspects of my move. They arrived early, checked in with me as needed, put furniture and boxes where I requested at my new place, and were done ahead of schedule, saving me a few dollars. This is the 3rd time I've used Local Motion, and I've been very satisfied each time. I'd recommend you guys to anyone! Thanks again for doing a great job.

My first experience with Local Motion was very positive and I even requested the same team the second time. Much to my dismay the team showed up 4 hours early and then would not promise me that if I sent them away that I would not be charged an additional trip charge. As I was closing on my new house at the same time I could not be in 2 places at one time. After calling around I finally got through to the dispatch number and after being on hold for well over 15 minutes I explained my predicament, the person I spoke to was rude and again would not promise that I would not be charged additional fees. I made them aware that after today I would never use Local Motion again nor would I recommend the company.
Description of Work: I used Local Motion in June 2008 to move my belongings out of my townhouse and into a SAM storage container to be stored for 4 months while building a new home. I requested the service of the same team in October 2008 to empty the SAM storage container and move the belongings into the new house.

Movers showed up 30 minutes late, with only one truck. They were taking their time "looking" around to see what to move first (as they are on an hourly wage). Once they got started they started packing the truck, and mid-packing realized they didn't have enough room and would need to order another truck (as we reminded them they said we would have two per the estimate), but didn't know when they could get it. One worker literally walked off the job and left us with only two movers. At the end of the long day, we had several damaged pieces of furniture (remember we only moved one block over!), scrapes and dents on our walls in our new home, and a huge bill. It took us several claims, pictures, phone calls, and letters to get a response to fix some (not all) of the things damaged from our move. I will never use or recommend this company to anyone. It was awful and very unprofessional.

Overall, the move went okay. The movers were very punctual, polite, and efficient. They sent three movers and one truck. They were done with the entire move within four hours. Since I only had a set of bedroom furniture that was of any expense (the rest was old furniture that I am planning to replace eventually anyway), I skipped the extra insurance. That was my mistake, but it didn't help that they managed to drop or mishandle the single largest most expensive piece of furniture I own - a large dresser. The dresser's side split from the unit and there are stress marks caused when the movers had decided to flip it up (with all the drawers in) to get it into the room. If they'd taken more care that might not have happened, and they acted surprised when I showed them the damage before they left (how they could miss it, I'm not sure - the wood is totally split). I was very disappointed when this happened, although I know it is not a rare occurance when moving. The movers provided me with a copy of the claims form for the dresser. I got an email saying they'd send a repair company to check out the damage and write-up an estimate. The repair company was scheduled and showed up - their comment was that it was "the worst damage they'd seen by movers in awhile," and more than simply a "ding" in the wood (lucky me). The repair company said they'd send their estimate directly to Local Motion who would then contact me to let me know if they would cover the repairs or not. No surprise - Local Motion decided not to cover the expensive repairs (nearly $400) and instead cut me a check for the minimum reimbursement they were allowed to give (since I didn't get the extra insurance) - which came out to $125. The annoying part is that I had to follow-up after the repair company came to find out what was happening with my claim. After not hearing anything for a couple of weeks, it wasn't until I contacted Local Motion and left a couple of messages that I was told they would not cover the repairs and would send me a check. Eventually, I did get the check (about 5 weeks after I'd moved and filed my claim). To their credit, they did send me more for the damage that I thought they would, but it is still less than half the cost of repairing the dresser, and only about 1/8 the cost of getting a new one. So ultimate result: from now on I will DEFINITELY go with the extra insurance if I do go with this company. The good news is that even with the cost of repairs AND the price they charged for the move, the total was still less than the estimates I got from two other moving companies - so that I why I give Local Motion a "good" rating overall (plus the movers were polite and prompt).
Description of Work: Local Motion gave us an estimate over the phone (and via email) for a move from a 2 BR apartment on one side of the Twin Cities to a 4 BR home on the other. We would pack our belongings and they would move our stuff. I scheduled the move about 4 weeks in advance. The movers arrived on time, loaded up our boxes and furniture, drove it across town, and unloaded our stuff, placing items where I directed them.

Excellent! Three guys from Local Motion showed up with a truck on the morning of our move and began loading up all our stuff. I was shocked when one of them approached me near the end of the load and said: "Not everything will fit. What can you take it yourself?" It should have been their job to bring a truck large enough to hold all of our things. The problem here, it would seem, is that they didn't do a visual estimate of our house before coming out; they merely guessed based on a phone conversation with us. We don't own an exorbitant amount of things. At any rate, because the truck was so tight, they spent considerable extra time trying to make things fit. Since they charged by the hour, we paid for that mistake. The drive from the old house to the new took considerably longer than it should have, which they blamed on the truck being loaded down beyond capacity. On arrival, they unloaded all of our materials. A glass table broke and shattered all over the driveway. Mistakes happen, but the real frustration here was that, I spent the next half hour cleaning up all the glass (it was a gravel driveway, so this was a manual effort of picking up individual shards). They would have been willing to do it, but I would have had to pay them for the time. Two of the folks were generally pretty friendly, but the leader of the three (Jay) turned fairly curt once the problem with the truck capacity occurred. I should add that this was an exceedingly hot summer day, and all three of them did work very hard. We were moving into an old house with a narrow stairwell, and it turns out that our queen size box spring didn't fit up the stairs. This wasn't their fault. However, this seemed to frustrate Jay to no end, and he spent some time pushing and grunting at the box spring to try to get it to go up, with the other two guys (and me) saying "forget it, it won't fit."). The paint in the wall was scuffed in the process. In short, we paid considerably for mistakes that they made, due to the hourly wage and the fact that their mistakes cost time. The process took hours longer than they estimated originally with us on the phone.

There was a 4-hour scheduling change the day of the move by the company that up-ended a half-day at work. Other than that, the 2-person crew that arrived was a pleasure to work with. Fast, precise, friendly, and pleasantly priced considering the actual move took longer than I estimated. They asked questions when needed, and really knew their stuff about maneuvering items.

I called for an estimate and to book our move roughly 6 weeks prior to our move. I was given a very rough estimate/wide range for cost, based on the size of the home we were moving from and a general description of the amount of items to be moved. On the day of our move, three movers came with one truck and within moments told us that we would either a) need a second truck to move everything or b) we'd need to unpack a load at the new property and return for the remainder of our goods. We went with option A but there was not another truck to be had. Unfortunately, our timing was very tight and we were required to be OUT of the old home immediately upon closing. We had to scramble to make arrangements with our buyers so that we could return later in the day for the remainder of our items. This was very inconvenient and could have all been avoided if the sales person had done a walk-through of our property to see how much stuff we had. In the end, the cost was higher than we expected, a mirror was damaged, and we still haven't found one of our lamps but the movers themselves were efficient and professional. We don't have another move to compare this to, but I will probably do some shopping around if we do move again.

The first set of people were really good! The second set of people was a little less professional.
