This was not an easy job! The granite patio is absolutely beautiful. Some other contractors wouldn't even talk about using that product. Al and team were prompt, professional and competitively priced. When we ran into a minor misunderstanding on finishing work, he made sure I was absolutely happy with the result before he called it a job. I wholeheartedly endorse Goodfellows.
Description of Work: Al's team laid a patio out of historic granite cobblestones reclaimed from a Minneapolis street. They also lifted and reset pavers in another area, and finished the adjacent areas.

The new walls and steps are beautiful and functional. Goodfellows gave us a good analysis of the project and a good explanation of our choices. We scheduled an early season installation to minimize stress to a mature garden. The first day, Goodfellows moved and stored already-growing perennials, demolished both walls and rebuilt the upper wall. Then it rained for days. When Goodfellows was able to return five days later, the crew built two sets of steps and the lower wall and cleaned up the site in just two days. They had cleaned up as they worked, and left the site in very good condition. The day after the walls were completed, we were able to replant the terrace gardens.
Description of Work: Demolition and reconstruction of two stone retaining walls and construction of two sets of steps.

We got a few estimates and Goodfellows was reasonably priced -- and final costs were on target with estimates. Alan Rott is an excellent communicator, always returned our calls and emails punctually. He walked us through our options and visited the property twice to make sure we & they were envisioning the work similarly. The work crew was neat, efficient and pleasant. Work was started & finished in two days. My only regret has to do with my own expectations and maybe not communicating a bit better about them. I want to plant fruit shrubs & vegetables very near the wall, and there is deep gravel for drainage inside the wall, going down several feet. There's about 3 inches of topsoil over the top of this gravel infill. I believe this means the wall is well built, but it's not good for plants. I wish I had said more and learned more about this aspect of the project. The wall itself looks great and we've gotten a lot of compliments from the neighbors.
Description of Work: Goodfellows installed a low retaining wall made of Versa Lok bricks at the back corner of our city lot. The wall measures about 16 feet long on one axis, about 13 feet on the other. Maximum height is about 3 feet.

I called Alan to see if he was willing to provide an estimate. We have a retaining wall behind our house that is approximately 100 feet long by about 2 feet high. It is in between our house and a railroad track that borders a nice park. We had one estimate last week that came in at about $7,000 for the job - and this was from one of the well rated, less expensive Angie's List servicers. I have been been watching the wall for a couple of years and have been very reluctant to deal with it. He looked around and said that if he were me he wouldn't replace the retaining wall at all - he'd simply regrade a little bit and slope the area toward the bottom, cover with straw, seed with shade resistant grass, and save myself a lot of money for something that probably didn't need to be a retaining wall in the first place (the previous owners put it in themselves to create a 3 foot X 100 foot garden along the back yard. He then explained where I could get the materials to do it myself. He would have been willing to put in a bid to build the wall if I wanted, but I assured him that what he described sounded great to me. Visually we don't ever see this - neither does anybody else. His advice cost him some business but is very much appreciated. It's what I wanted to hear, but didn't even know to ask anybody about it because I hadn't considered it as an option. He's earned my business in the future.

Not good. Do not deal with this company for smaller jobs.
Description of Work: Got a bid. Requested work. Work not performed this year. Got run around and lies from Allen. Not recommend for small jobs $2000. They will put you off and ignore you. Had some of the work done by a non-Angies landscape company in Chaska. The rest of the work will have to wait until 2012, since I wasted much time dealing with Good Fellows -- and they never did any work!

We gave the customer a bid, there were several items in the bid. He selected one item which was sod repair. The job was under $500.00, and I said we could not do the job. I honestly told him with fuel costs, labor, and materials we could lose money performing the install. It's unfortunate that we couldn't help him with his project at that time. Please reference our other reports for a more accurate picture of the outstanding service we continually provide our customers.

The project went as well as could be expected. The company rep was outstanding, knowing lots about plants and when and where they should be planted (my wife, who graduated with a plant science degree was impressed), he offered a lot of suggestions as to what we should use replace the original project. The price was competitive but not outstanding. The biggest problem we encountered in working with this company is that they are VERY busy, in part because of the good word-of-mouth from satisfied Angie's List customers. The job was done very efficiently and mostly to our satisfaction. I faulted them a bit on tidiness until I tried to finish some work and found out how hard and tedious it would have been to go the last one percent. Given the price they quoted me their level of work was quite satisfactory. They accidentally severed a power line to an external lamp but line wasn't marked and they did a good job of repairing the power line so I've got no complaints there either. The best things is that they were fast and did a great job of protecting the rest of the yard from collateral damage!
Description of Work: We needed a poorly-installed overgrown landscape project by the previous owners ripped out. There was lots of overgrown bushes, lava rock, and an old tree trunk (which was well hidden and was probably the inspiration for the original project). In short, this was a nasty, brutish project that needed to be done before we could get to the main job of putting something more appealing in place. Proper disposal of all of the unwanted material was another major concern.

From the beginning the experience was great. Start to finish 5 days. The entire team-- Al, Corey and their small group of employees were so extremely professional, prompt, flexible and reliable. It's the kind of company where I felt comfortable leaving my back door open while I was gone, they kept in frequent communication about any questions or changes they had in the plan, and when unexpected items (like huge tree roots on my Elm) came up, they were able to quickly adapt our design and work with the landscape I had. It was an absolute joy to come home from work every day to see the progress that was made. Neighbors commented along the way about how reliable and neat the team was. I highly recommend the group and will do so to family and friends!
Description of Work: We hired Goodfellows to install back stairs and a stone patio after I had a small deck removed. In addition to that, the also did landscaping, finishing the space with plantings, mulch and sod. I trusted their ideas from the beginning (we did not do a detailed drawing of a plan, but rather had several conversations about potential shape, color, materials, etc) and the result is better than I imagined. Al was a great communicator, quick to respond to all of my questions and Corey had a fantastic eye for turning the patio into something beautiful and working with all of our unique challenges in the landscape. They ended up removing my old sidewalk and making a larger, more usable patio space for my back yard. I cannot believe the transformation that resulted!

I was impressed by their whole approach to the project. When Al (owner) first gave me a bid, he really looked at the yard noting that we liked rusted iron, rocks, curved bed lines and then suggested the weathered chilton that would be the curved edging for the existing bed. He also wanted to make the patio more free form so not a circle or rectangle. After getting several bids, we decided on this company. I felt comfortable with Al's expertise, good humor, and accessible demeanor. After several days of rain, the crew came to work on the project. When I came home from work in the middle of the day I was surprised that they were already laying the stone. I met the other owner Cory who was the lead man on laying the stone. I also met the other two crew members. All of them were professional, polite, and obviously took pride in their work. They returned the next day to complete the work and seed the lawn. I would also like to note that we had a length of chain link fence that was leaning; they removed that piece to get the loader in the yard and reinstalled it so it is now standing straight up. Corey even went to Home Depot to purchase a part for the fence. Am ever grateful for the "better than it was" care.
Description of Work: Removed stone backyard sidewalk and replaced with weathered chilton stepping stones; installed 9 X 12 weathered chilton patio with transitional walkway; installed 4 x 5 grill pad that transitions to patio walkway. Seeded work areas after the project.

They showed up on time every day- worked hard - got the job done! They were professional and they listened to my concerns and made GREAT suggestions about what would look the best. I'm so happy with the work. My neighbors said that they couldn't believe that the pavers were new - they looked like they'd been there for ever. Nice. That's what we were hoping for - an install that looked natural with the house and the setting. Thanks guys.
Description of Work: Goodfellows buried the 8 drain spouts around my house - into a drain tile system to get the water away from the house. It looks fab! Also had them do a beautiful reclaimed paver - herringbone on a 45 degree angle - walkway near the garage. Perviously it was just a mulched and mossy path that collected leaves, and clutter. Now it's a show piece and I find myself using it more because it looks beautiful. Doing this job completely changed the feeling of driving up to the house. And it's so nice not to have to worry if the downspouts are connected or in place every time it rains.

From the start, Goodfellows was responsive, professional and conscientious. During the initial estimate, Alan spent time discussing the details of the project and suggested design and cost-saving options that were not proposed by the other 4 contractors I interviewed. Best of all, his bid was very competitive. The install went smoothly too. The project took about 5 days to complete. The crew worked hard. They answered any questions I had and were helpful and accommodating when I made a last minute design change. They installed 2 new drain tiles to extend the gutters. They also took care to hand dig certain areas and establish a deeper base for the pavers due to the clay soil. Our existing lawn and landscaping were spared during the project because Goodfellows has an innovative machine that does not tear up the lawn as much as a bobcat. When finished, they cleaned up all the construction materials, fixed and/or moved sprinkler heads, and put new sod around the patio. We are very pleased with the result and have already hired them for our next project.

Great. After a successful patio install by Goodfellows a month earlier, we hired them to extend our backyard. Alan negotiated good end-of-season dirt prices for us, and trucked in 14 truckloads of dirt to build up our hill side. This was not a glamorous project, but they accomplished exactly what we wanted -- a bigger yard. The crew did a great job of transporting the massive amount of dirt, grading the new yard, wrapping erosion mats on the new slope, and installing and adjusting the sprinkler heads. They also took care to keep our front yard clean during the project by sweeping up the dirt and blowing out the grass daily. Once again, we are very satisfied.

Al responded via his phone email within 1 hour of when I sent the email inquiry. He was very responsive throughout the project. His bid was very competitive. He was very flexible, using another designer's layout and a tree that I had purchased from the city. He also was patient when I changed my mind on the edging and made a few changes in the plant selections. He made my life simple. I would use him again.
Description of Work: Al Rott created a 16' X 12' garden in my front yard from a designer's drawing. He purchased all the plants, stone edging, mulch, etc. He advised me on some plant substitutions and provided sample stone edging from which I selected the one that best matched my home. His 2-man crew arrived with all the necessary equipment and completed the project in a half day. Instant garden!

They came back quickly with a quote, and were able to schedule the work quickly as well. When I returned home from work, everything was apparently complete, with topsoil and mulch on the bed. The following week, when I went to plant in the bed, I found that there was still a good deal of landscape rock just below 3 inches or so of topsoil (in some case more, in some less). In one area there was old landscape cloth that had not been removed. The quality of the soil used and uniformity of depth across the bed varied. Some parts were very sandy. I was not satisfied with the final product. I had expected that it would be of suitable depth for planting standard nursery flowers, and it was not. In some areas, there wasn't enough soil even to plant a 2 inch petunia plant. I did not confront them with this issue, as I did not feel worth the hassle, butI would not hire again.

wish i was confronted on this matter, want the job done right. we removed 8 to 10 inches of landscape rock and install garden blend mix of soil. was awhere of how much rock there was, client told me how deep the rock was. the area was mounded up with rock and sounds like crew didnt go 10 to 12 inches deep, which is odd to go to that deep. I wish we could fix the issue, if something isnt right, we want to fix the issue. thanks for time, al rott goodfellows landscapes

Al came out for the initial estimate. After we discussed the scope of the project, he took a lot of time to explain exactly what he proposed to do and submitted a bid within a couple days. I had received estimates from about five other contractors and ended up choosing Goodfellows due to the time Al took during our initial visit, his availability for follow-up questions, their very reasonable bid, and the reviews on Angie's List. The bid was not very detailed, but I felt I could trust that Goodfellows would perform the work as agreed upon verbally. The job took about 4 days total, and Corey was on site most of the time. He and Al answered any questions I had during the project and provided their opinion on the layout of the patio and other aesthetic aspects of the job. I appreciated that they gave their opinions without being pushy or assuming that I would agree with them. They were also very accommodating to a few changes I made during the project. The job site was kept neat throughout the project, and they left nothing behind when they were finished. They seeded the area around the patio and the path they used to get to the backyard, so we'll see how that turns out this spring. The patio, walkway, and stoop turned out looking amazing and I felt that Goodfellows was a pleasure to work with. I believe that they are a trustworthy and honest company that does quality work. I would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Goodfellows installed a 300 sq. ft. paver patio, a paver walkway, and covered an existing concrete stoop with pavers. They also did some slight regrading to keep water away from the foundation and installed gutter drains to go underneath the new walkway.

Just great. They were efficient, reasonable, neat and friendly. Would not hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: Goodfellows rebuilt a raised garden bed (10' w x 15' l x 2' h) that was falling apart after 20 years of use and removed a quite large and quite dead bush in our front yard. We got the estimate and after looking at two other companies, we went with Goodfellows. They happened to be in the neighborhood when we called to ok the work, They were at the house in about two hours, pulled down the old rotten timbers and also removed the bush. They returned the next day and rebuilt the bed. Two things -- I had about 4 8' timbers that were sitting in my garage and they were able to use those in the rebuild (which worked out well for both of us) and when they showed up the first day to remove the bush and the old rotten timbers, they were coming from another job and had extra mulch from that job and they asked if we wanted it. My wife never turns down anything garden related, so she was delighted to get quite a substantial amount of good mulch free.
