I phoned Metro Home Maintenance hoping that John would still be available for this work, as he knows this situation, and I was delighted he was available to clean out this system again. When he arrived at the house (on time as before), he showed me a new and clever kit that he had purchased to make this job more efficient. John got right to work and removed the access panel he'd installed on a previous visit. He found the problem, cleaned out the entire length of the vent and all the turns in the system. The problem in this house is that the laundry room just isn't in a good location. There is no other possibility for venting. So, if one has a situation where conditions are not the best, then thank Heaven John at Metro Home Maintenance can keep it working. I would like to stress that when we first became aware of this situation back in early 2007 (Our dryer just wasn't drying clothes at all - the heat sensor kept clicking on and off as it attempted to work with a clogged vent.) We called a vent cleaning company. The gentleman from that company came out here, did what he could, and solved nothing. Therefore John at Metro Home Maintenance really saved the situation. My phone call to Metro was answered promptly. A convenient time was agreed upon and John was right on time. John, knowing that our problem would reappear, had even purchased a special kit for problems such as these. John worked quickly and carefully to complete his work. There is simply no substitute for a skillful person who is willing to work hard and think through a problem. Once again the dryer hums right along and works as intended an we are grateful.
Description of Work: You can see a previous report from me on this company where I detail how John found two serious problems with our dryer's venting. He essentially gave us full use of our two year old dryer which had never worked properly because of issues with venting. At the time of the repairs over 1 1/2 years ago, John advised us that, because of the peculiarities of our our dryer venting situation, (too many 90 degree angles, a long distance from the dryer to the outdoor vent) he'd estimate that the vent would need cleaning in about a year. He was right! The dryer vent had begun to clog again around the area of the 90 degree angles. John cleaned out the vent and also used metal reinforced tape to securely anchor the duct work. For this he had to access the duct by removing a panel he'd previously installed in our basement linen closet.

Overall, the job was well-done. It took several days to finish the job because of our schedules, but they did try to accommodate our schedules. Mark, as always, does an excellent job and is full of useful tips. We have used them before and will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: They installed a new kitchen laminate floor as well as the molding around the floor. They also changed the bathroom faucet and changed the bathtub drain stopper which was broken. Additionally, when the new floor was noted to be higher than the old floor, they shortened the doors so that they wouldn't scrape.

Not good. My main problem was that they quoted me a price on the phone, sight unseen. I get that the subcontractor doesn't know how much it'll cost without coming out to see the project first. I get that. However, I didn't know that the price they quote you on the phone is the "floor" for your final price. If the job is more than they quote you I think they try to work with you to get close to what they quote you. However, I happen to think this particular job was less than what I quoted (and charged). I saw the quote as simply a worst-case, ballpark estimate. They are welcome to have whatever charging policy they'd like, I'd simply ask that they let me know that policy up front so that I know that if the job doesn't take that long or cost that much, you still pay what they quoted you. I would have shopped around more if I had known that. When I tried to ask questions about the bill I received, the office staff was inappropriate and defensive in their response. I never said I wouldn't pay the bill - I simply asked a few questions about it. Also difficult to get the subcontractor to my house initially. I had to call the Metro Home Maintenance main office a 2nd time to get the sub to call me to schedule. However, the quality of the work of the subcontractor was good. Man who came out to do the actual work was polite and friendly.
Description of Work: Replaced a few granite tiles on the kitchen counter that had fallen off.

Overall, they offer a very good price and work quickly. The quality is not that high and some obvious shortcuts were taken with the dishwasher installation (hole left in wall uncovered, wires not tied down). They did come back to the house and cover the hole in the wall, since it could be seen from under the sink. Less than a year after the dishwasher was installed, the plumbing under the sink (which had been updated by them to allow for dishwasher installation) fell apart, and we had to have the entire assembly replaced. I would not use them again for major repairs or minor remodeling, but have used their services since for minor repairs.
Description of Work: We have had two services performed in the past two years, including modifying a cabinet to install a dishwasher, moving the former cabinet doors onto a different cabinet and removing window boxes with necessary waterproofing repair.

Excellent! Sam, the woman on the phone, was very nice and knowledgeable. I emailed her a photos of our broken parts and she was able to give me an accurate estimate, it turned out to be less which was great. Everything was done as specified by Mark, very personable and knowledgeable.

John came out a couple days after my request for a quote. He got a very detailed quote; I later adjusted that to defer some items that I will likely have them do later, just not with this set of work. Job was started approximately 2 weeks later by Pat from MHM. On the work itself a great experience - the work was done well and they adjusted to several modifications that I elected to make along the way. They can get a wide variety of things done, was a bonus to me that they could do electrical quite well.
Description of Work: Bathroom fan install (ducting via the attic), bathroom medicine cabinet and lighting install, install of two GFI outlets in bathroom (no outlets were in the bathroom previously), multiple door frame installs and leveling adjustments, 3 outdoor motion lights installed.

Fabulous. Mark showed up, fixed my fascia and then I asked about other services. (I have an older home). So I asked if he could put an outlet on my front sunporch for a lamp in the spring/summer/fall. He said yes. After getting the materials, I now have an outlet on my front sunporch. It rocks.

All Metro 7:30 in the morning, and arrived around 11:30 the same morning. Mark was very nice and even informed me that he would be 1 hour late. The job costed exactly the same as the estimate and was nicely installed. Thanks Mark.
Description of Work: I totally messed up a under-the-sink water filtration system and pierced the copper wipe. Called Metro at 7:30 in the morning, and arrived they around 11:30 the same morning. I paid $235 for 2.5 hours of work, which included a $39.50 trip charge and $8 in supplies. The per-hour charge is $79. Ben was prompt (even calling for permission to show up an hour early), friendly, explained each repair as he went along, gave alternatives to repairs (quick and short-term vs. complicated and long-term) and was creative in his problem-solving.
Description of Work: My husband and I are too busy (or shall we say too inept) to do home maintenance more complicated than changing light bulbs. We had a list of repairs: fix a non-working bathroom light, adjust stuck and stubborn dresser drawers, troubleshoot a non-working outlet, fix a stuck shade, change light bulbs (we have 10-foot ceilings and a 3-foot ladder), fix a wobbly table and apply caulking around gaps in the baseboard. Just a bunch of little things that added up to a lot of annoyances.

I called and was able to get an appointment within a few days (the day before Thanksgiving). Ben arrived on time and did a great job. I had put these jobs off for a long time because they would required both a plumber and an electrician. But since Ben could do both, I got the jobs done by one person, one visit and one trip charge!

This was a total waste of my time, both personally and in trying to get my projects completed before Winter. I took an hour off of work to meet with John. The 6 calls which resulted in no action were a waste of my time. My Fall projects were set 6 weeks behind because of this experience. I want my $40 back plus $60 compensation for the time I took off of work, my time in making phone calls to the company, and setting my projects back 6 weeks.
Description of Work: On October 1, 2007 John Wynkoop, Vice President, came to my home to talk about some projects and give me an estimate. The estimate was to arrive within 10 business days. When the estimate did not arrive, calls to the company resulted in false promises to return calls, or my calls were ignored altogether. In all, 6 calls were made to the company. On 10/29 I got a hold of "Vickie." Vickie said they had no records of John's visit to my house. I told her that was interesting because the records existed long enough to charge my Visa card. Vickie said she would mail me a check for my $40. I pressed for an answer as to why this happened, and Vickie simply said, "There's no explanation for it." I asked her if John was still with the company and she replied, "Oh yes." On November 7th my check still had not arrived. I called again and this time Vickie told me the check would be mailed on Friday (11/9). It is 11/13 and the check has not been sent. ($40)

Everyone did a great job. The faucet work was a bit expensive. I may have been better off just buying a new one and having it installed. The painter was excellent and took the time to scrape and prime. The person installing the handrails and grips was very pleasant and helpful.
Description of Work: Painted garage and car port trim. Another person installed handrails and grips in a stairway and bathroom. A third worked on a dripping faucet in the kitchen.

They were prompt, professional and friendly. Their estimate was approximately $400 higher than one estimate we received, but also $500 lower than a third. They suggested doing some carpentry on one of the doorways to make it a standard size, which probably helped keep the cost down. My only complaint is that they said it would take 10 days to provide an estimate and after ten days, I called because we had not received anything. They told me it was ten business days, which seemed like a long time for an estimate on two storm doors, since the other two companies sent their estimates within a couple days. But, they did provide it within ten business days.
Description of Work: We obtained an estimate from this company to replace two storm doors on our house, both irregular sizes. ($1420.)

Great, I could not find anyone willing to do this for us. Mark was running a little behind but had the courtesy to call and let me know that. He worked past 5pm to get the project done for us. Instead of running the cable on the outside of the house like others recommended, he ran the cable up a cold air return to the attic and then over to the bedroom. Along the way, he also gave us useful tips and tricks with the furnace, insulation and took a look at some other work will need in the future. He was clean, professional, friendly and honest.
Description of Work: Ran Cable (TV) from basement up two stories to attic and then over to our master bedroom.

I couldn't tell where the leak was coming form so I called metro home maintenance. They sent someone out right away. The man came out got up on the roof and found the issue. He fixed the problem area and it has not leaked since. He was very nice man and great to work with. I would use them again.

The person who answered the phone said, "I don't usually answer the phones, we are busy from all the storms." I explained what I wanted and asked when I'd get a call for the estimate. I didn't keep track of dates, but he said "Friday." i called back Monday after that and they said this coming Friday it is scheduled to be looked at. OK, so it was almost two weeks before they could get out. Finally, I gave up the following week and called a handyman I have used before. He fixed it for $50.00. A couple days later, I get an estimate for a complete residing job, plus a comment about replacing the missing fascia: $14,700! what?
Description of Work: I had storm damage at my Eden Prairie rental home. Just some fascia came off according to the renter, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't more than that. I called Metro home appliance to request an estimate.

Service tech scheduled to do the work called in sick the morning of the job, so the owner called us and came to do the work himself. It was still done within the originally scheduled time frame. Install was quick, clean and efficient. The plumbing line was re-run from a better location under-sink (rather than through the floor, as was originally done). This means the water shut-off for the dishwasher is in a much better location. This company charges a straight hourly rate (+ a trip charge) as opposed to charging "by the job". So that means they don't pad the bill as I've had happen to me in the past.
Description of Work: Installed dishwasher, installed new water supply line. Capped off water supply line to former location.

When Metro came out to do the work they were timely and polite. We had a couple of items change on the work list from when I had called Sam so we went through that first. The technician I had worked hard to get things done, but my ceiling fan problem was an unusual one and he got stuck. On his first visit he did not have time to finish all the items on the list. After he left, I discovered a problem with the curtain rods and when I called Sam she was very helpful in setting up a time to get it fixed. One of their most experienced people was scheduled to come out and called me ahead of time to see if he could also try to fix the ceiling fan and use it as a training opportunity for the technician who had been here the first time. They came and got both things fixed. Also, Mark offered to take the original part from one of my broken light fixtures and find a replacement part for me. He did and had it shipped to me directly so I could put it in. Very nice service!
Description of Work: Ceiling fan repair, installing curtain rods, installing floor molding, installing carpet toe strip, repair a couple of light fixtures.

Mark, the company president, came to do our work. He arrived on time, was immediately personable and responsive to our needs. He wanted to survey the variety of jobs we had and then set about completing them in an orderly manner. He made several recommendations that improved safety and/or reduced the cost to us. He was fun to have around, the work was completed quickly and competently. We'll definitely use Metro Home Maintenance again, soon.

The team was friendly, made a visit within a week of my call, showed up on time. The first tech was unable to repair the dishwasher and sent a more seasoned tech who recommended we buy a new dishwasher given the cost to repair. We did. Appreciated the recommendation. On the siding, overall, we were very happy with the end result; they got the resident squirrels out of the holes and did a very nice job replacing the siding on the chimney. My only complaint was that without consulting me, they put mothballs into the holes to remove the squirrels and the whole house smelled like mothballs for a couple of months. I am grateful the smell is finally diminishing; it gave me headaches and I was afraid it would never go away.
Description of Work: Dishwasher repair. Re-side a portion of the house with woodpecker holes.
