Description of Work: Chris and his crew from Artistic Landscapes put in a rock wall on our beach, also put in a brick sidewalk and driveway apron. They did a beautiful job on both projects! We couldn't be more pleased! Over and above our expectations!

Description of Work: I really can't give you a complete review yet. (your form won't let me submit unless I rate each area) We have agreed on a price and signed an agreement. He said he should be able to complete the patio during July.
I interviewed a number of contractors during the search stage of the project. Chris was the only one of two that produced the promised drawings. The other organization was twice his price. That in addition having good references, good reviews on Angie's List, and knowledgeable, flexible approach to the project got him the job. Once the breeding season for bass ended we could start construction. Because Chris had some other jobs, it was early to mid July before we could start. Once started the project took five weeks to finish which I find reasonable for that size project. If I would have changed anything I would have made fewer statements and posed more things as questions. That way I would have gotten more of Chris's ideas. After all, he is the one that does this stuff for a living and he is good at it.
Description of Work: We live on a channel that goes into a 200 acre lake. We had a railroad tie wall and dock along 256 feet of channel, our back lot line. We also had a deck that went up to the water's edge. It was all in very bad shape. The deck was constantly settling as frost damaged the footings and at 30 years the railroad ties had outlived their usefulness. In completing the project Chris had to: 1 - Remove 256 feet of railroad tie wall that ranged from six to eight feet tall. 2 - Remove several trees. 3 - Temporarily transplant two trees for subsequent replanting. 4 -Construct boulder wall to replace railroad tie wall. Most of the wall construction was done from behind which required the machine operator to follow hand directions from an assistant standing in front of the wall. 5 - Install a Slope-Tame ramp to control erosion in a 20 foot section. This was a new experience for Chris. He researched the process and installation and did an excellent job. 6 - Replace sprinkler system. 7 - Install 700 yards of sod. 8 - Install plastic garden border. 9 - Install mulch 10 - Install 15 by 20 patio to replace deck. 11 - Assist us by providing drawings for the city, state and Corps of Engineers approval process.
Chris Baker was extremely professional beginning with the estimating process all the way through final completion of the project. From the start we were very happy with Chris' design ideas and impressed with his creativity and expertise. Chris did an excellent job of explaining his plans beginning with suggested selection of materials to drainage solutions and plantings. Chris was very accommodating with any suggested changes during the project. As everyone knows change orders can be very expensive during a project but Chris was very reasonable with the scope of changes as well as managing cost. We were extremely happy with Artistic Landscapes and plan to continue to use this company going forward.
Description of Work: Remove old timber retaining walls and cement sidewalk and replace with boulder walls and paver sidewalk. Remove all existing shrubs, decorative rock and underlying plastic and replace with new plantings and mulch. Also installed landscape lighting.
I received bids from Artistic Landscapes and several other providers. I was impressed by Chris's professionalism and his knowledge. Chris was the most responsive to my project which instilled a level of trust. I also thought his pricing was very fair, never any pressure. Chris?s team worked quickly to install my retaining wall and completed the project in a few days. I will definitely use them again. The overall look is better than I expected. Without question or reservation I would recommend Chris to anyone no matter how large or small their project. Chris?s honesty was much appreciated. The new wall is solid and most importantly beautiful. At the end of every day they cleaned everything up. There were no surprises, nothing neglected, it was great! On another note Chris has made himself available for questions I?ve had regarding outside issues I am having with my new wall, priceless?
Description of Work: I had them remove the old log retaining wall along driveway and install decorative stone blocks along driveway & continued installing wall block down the sidewalk to the front of my house.

We received bids from Artistic Landscapes and one other provider. We were impressed by Chris's professionalism and his design. We also thought his pricing was very fair. This patio project was completed in two days, and the results were absolutely amazing. Chris's team arrived promptly in the morning, were extremely respectful of the space, worked extremely hard, and cleaned up after themselves. I was particularly impressed that after completing the patio, two members of his team returned to place new sod and grass around the patio where the machine had torn up the grass, the painstaking effort they put into making it fit the curves of the new patio, and, again, the cleanup. The attention to detail was very impressive--I even saw some of Chris's workers on their hands and knees making small chips in the antique-looking, rustic stones we chose to make it look more authentic. We have received many, many compliments on this new patio and feel that it was money very well spent. No funny business, no hidden charges (when Chris found that subterranean structure and had his team remove it, he told us about it so we weren't surprised by the extra charges), and he stayed within the original estimate, notwithstanding the unexpected structure. Chris was respectful and work began quickly. We will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We had a large concrete slab in lieu of a patio, left over from previous owner. Artistic Landscapes broke up concrete slabs, including a pathway, graded the land, tore out an unexpected subterranean structure, and designed and created a patio.

We have a shrub / perennial garden that runs the full 100 feet width of our backyard at the rear of the lot. It is divided into two sections, each approximately 5-6 feet deep separated by a 3 foot wide flagstone and river rock walkway running the full length for access to the two sections. We had lived with a severe grade drop on one end since we built in 2006 and it was difficult to walk on the grade on about the last 20 feet. We wanted a two tiered block wall that started at the low end and ran into grade about 20 feet in. The two tiers allowed the lower garden section and the walkway to be flattened out for more ease of access at that end. Artistic Landscapes was the best bid and we were comfortable that Chris was a quality contractor, both from all the other Angie's reviews and just from meeting him when he bid the job. We were late in the season getting bids and most landscapers schedules were full until the fall. Though also booked until fall, Chris said he could get to it between his larger jobs in the next couple of weeks. He promptly emailed the bid which we accepted. Chris and his crew of 4 did the majority of the construction on a difficult day with one of the highest heat indexes we've ever experienced here in the Twin Cities. Chris communicated as needed during the job with questions or ideas, and we made some changes from the original bid. They were short a few blocks (because of length and height changes) but came back the following week and completed the project. We have now replanted the perennials that we had removed, and it's great not to have to fight the grade while working at that end of the garden. I would highly recommend Artistic Landscapes to anyone. Chris is very professional, returns emails and calls promptly, and was extremely responsive to our needs.
Description of Work: Construct a two-tiered anchor block wall at the low end of back yard garden in order to "flatten" a severe grade that we had lived with since we built in 2006.

When I called to get an estimate the response time was good. Chris Baker also made trips to show me actual full size paver samples which was very helpful...better than just pictures in a booklet. We did have to deal with weather...rain before starting and too high temps to put the finish sealer on. When the crew was here they were hard working, professional and willing to make on the job additions(extra plants were removed and more added) The clean up at days end was good and all sod that was affected by the work was replaced.I love the look of the new patio and I will use this company again when I add some more plantings in the fall.
Description of Work: The work I needed done was to have an old concrete patio removed and in it's place a new paver patio installed. I also added new steps...removed old plants ..added new plantings.

Artistic Landscapes worked hard and created visible improvements daily. When Chris Baker says he's coming to work on any given day...there are workers all over your yard and they're moving dirt, hauling rock and getting things done. Very productive and good use of time. I would highly recommend their work and the overall look of what I expected was met even with giving Chris latitude to go off plan and just pick some things to meet what I wanted. He understood the look of our home, the neighborhood and what would work.
Description of Work: Artistic Landscaping was hired to install a boulder retaining wall system in our back yard, level and regrade back yard, create walk path with pavers, install shade plants, rebuild two sloping hills with steps and plant, re-grade, fill with new dirt the entire front yard old river rock beds, pull out about 8 old firs that were near dead or dying, build a burm, add all new plantings that are Mn hearty, to my liking and easy to care for and rip out an old brick entrance walkway and side entrance landing and reset with new pavers. Also installed lighting for uplights on house, large trees and sidewalk for evening.
Chris and his team were punctual, professional and the work was always top-notch. He was always flexible and willing to help create a vision for our project, but at the same-time modify as the project went on. The quality of the materials he used, the design, and the implementation or installation were always top-notch and well thought-out. Chris is very knowledgeable about hardscape, construction, and plant materials. We were very impressed with his work ethic and willingness to put in long days to get the project done on time. The project was very exciting to be a part of and he included us appropriately at every step. He was excellent at communicating any changes or concerns and was always very respectful our needs to continue to live in and around the project. At the end of the project, Chris spent two days coming back and fine-tuning our punch-list and the little things like the lighting solution (timer, illumination patterns, etc), the irrigation (several times after multiple days of irrigation he would come back and add a new or different head or change a spray-pattern), etc. The project is stunning and we get many compliments. Our neighbors have asked for Chris's contact information and we have referred many friends to Chris for landscaping and driveways. I was very impressed that a week after project completion Chris called to ensure that things were still going well and we didn't have any questions. Of all the bids we got, Chris was the best value, most professional, instilled the greatest level of trust, and was the most responsive. Chris will become our default, go-to provider for all landscaping and I'm excited to come up with something for him to work on next Spring! Without question or reservation I would recommend Chris to anyone no matter how large or small your project.
Description of Work: Chris and his team bid on and completed a four-to-five week landscaping project for us that included Total demolition of our existing front driveway and landscaping Regrading of environment Multiple mature tree removal New tumbled paver driveway Multiple retaining walls New deck and bluestone entryway Large cedar pergola and trellis Sod, irrigation, plantings, new trees Low-voltage lighting solution High-end permanent "sport-court" basketball system

They came out to review what we had talked about. They had solutions to our problems with our steps, walkway and general landscape areas in front and back of the house. We like the ideas, but some parts were a bit more them we could afford at this time. The estimate included a paver sidewalk instead of cement. They presented an $11,900 plan for new steps, new walkway, removal and replacement of scrubs in front and in back of the house. Also included was a 20x20 foot cement replacement of part of the driveway. About $1500 of this was for future work in the back of the house. The owner provided a printed layout plan of his ideas. The company does a lot of work with paver walkways and we were looking more for a combination of cement with paver trim. Cement work is done by a sub-contractor. The company was good in following up on us with out making us feel pressured. After 2 months, we decided to scale down our needs and look for ways to do the project in small pieces over the next two years. We have done nothing since. If a paver look is what a person wants, this is a company to be considered. They knew the product and had the experience.
Description of Work: We had front stoop that was sagging and pulling away from the house. A walkway that was being lifted by tree roots, forcing it to flow running water towards the house. Driveway 20x20 ft slab in front of garage needed replacement.
We were very impressed with Artistic Landscapes. We have an extremely challenging site. The job involved removing some finished front yard landscaping (plants, arbor, stepping stones and fences) to allow the transport of boulders around the house and down a steep hill to the lakeshore. They hauled away old timber walls and unexpected items like a massive tree stump. Hundreds of square feet of boulder walls were constructed with skill. Chris did a great job fitting the walls into the curve of the hillside. The three tiers were then planted with trees and perennials. Irrigation and mulch were added. In the lower tier they built a round permeable paver patio and path with boulder steps to our existing deck. The patio was done with great precision and is just beautiful. All the front landscaping was put back the way it was. Chris and his team transformed our unusable hillside into an amazing landscape.
Description of Work: We hired Artistic Landscapes to create a usable landscape out of our steep lakeshore lot. Chris and his team installed 3 boulder walls which created planting beds. They installed a permeable paver patio and fieldstone boulder steps, plus irrigation system, plant material and mulch.

He was very knowledgeable, very responsive and flexible to our needs and schedule. After the installation, he cleaned up and repaired (beautifully) lawn and flower gardens that had to be used by his equipment. He was very easy to work with, and meticulous in the finished job.
Description of Work: Removed concrete patio, laid new base (including drain tile), replaced with pavers.
Fantastic. We were able to coordinate the landscaping work around the completion of the house and the installation of a pool. Chris did a great job of working with the other trades on site which allowed everyone to forge ahead at a good pace. In terms of communcation, we always were kept in the loop on progress and any questions/issues that came up were immediately addressed. The overall project took place over approximately three months and all ran very smoothly. Without a doubt, Artistic Landscapes was one of our favorite contractors to work with over the year plus design/build cycle. My wife and I have received great feedback from friends and neighbors about how great the landscaping work turned out, and we certainly agree. One thing we really like about Chris is that he really sweats the details and takes the time and attention to do things right from the get go. In the future, I am sure there will be some future landscaping projects done around the home, and Artistic Landscapes will do the work without hesitation. My wife and I are big believers in sticking with people that do great work and are easy and enjoyable to work with. And Chris is certainly a member of that list of ours. My wife and I love how everything turned out and look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.
Description of Work: My wife and I had worked with Chris Baker/Artistic Landscapes a previously. They installed a paver sidewalk and stoop at our last home, and we had a very positive experience. Pricing was very competitive, the work was done on time, and done very well with great attention to detail. They also came with a great recommendation from a friend of my wife. In 2009, we started construction on a new home, and when it came down to landscaping, Artistic Landscapes was on the short list. My wife and I spoke to a number of firms, and asked that two firms submit proposals. Chris was dead on with his first draft. It was very apparent that Chris really picked up on our tastes and likes/dislikes. The other party missed the boat completely even after having several meetings. The scope of work was quite broad. There was excavation work in some areas of the property to achieve desired grades and draintile work to ensure proper drainage. There was extensive hardscape work which included boulder walls, patios and pool decking, stone walls, stepping stone pathways, driveway aprons, stone edging and two water features. There was a large low voltage lighting plan installed that consisted of accent lighting around the home as well as bollard lights that lined a long driveway. A 12 zone sprinkler system that included drip irrigation was installed around the home along with sod. Seed was planted in other large areas on the property. Softscape work included transplanting and/or removal of some trees already on the property, addition of quite a few new ones, numerous shrubs and flowers around the house. In addition, a large raised bed garden was built in back of the home.

The process went smoothly as planned. Still having troubles with what type of plants to be used in backyard. Plants are struggling for survival. In some cases immature plants were used and I think they are harder to establish and flourish. I have received lots of compliments on the design and how the garden looks. Overall I am very pleased with the job.
Description of Work: New paver entrance to service garage. New landscape with stone pavers for side yard. Transplanted old plants to new area in yard. Added new plants to existing area in backyard. Designed and planted new plants to south side of house with pavers.

Chris and his team showed up exactly on the day they said they would ready to go! The guys he has working are just wonderful to have around. They are hard working, focused, polite and very helpful. Any question that I had during the process they would not just answer they would explain how and why it was being done a certain way. It was incredibly hot during the project but they never slowed down. At the end of every day they cleaned up like they had never even been there. I was given a time-line of 3 days for the project to be completed, which my husband and I doubted greatly, but sure enough, 3 days it was! No surprises, nothing neglected, it was great!
Description of Work: We had an old crumbling retaining wall in the back yard rebuilt with new stone. It was quite an expansive wall so there was alot involved. Starting with the dismantling of the original wall, they took it apart, hauled it to the front and stacked them all on pallets instead of hauling them away because we had plans for the old stone. This was incredibly helpful to us. We really had no idea what our vision for the new wall was and Chris (the owner) was so wonderful in guiding us with options and plans. NEVER any pressure. His honesty was much appreciated. The new wall is solid and most importantly beautiful. It was very important to us not to have a "commercial" looking wall and Artistic Landscapes achieved that beyond our expectations. We also had some bushes and trees on the side of our house that had been neglected and therefore had become quite overgrown, and they removed all of that and planted bushes that go so much better with the character of our home. Lighting and a walkway from our deck was also installed to complete the look. This is actually the 2nd job that they have done for us. The 1st one pleased us so much that we had no hesitation going back to them and are so glad we did. I feel that Chris took the time to truly listen to us so he could understand what we wanted and built from there. The look of our project reflects us, it is not generic (which we were afraid of!) and it so compliments our home.
