I phoned Mattson because they had drilled the original well many years ago, so they knew my well and pump system. My problem was that the running pump was tripping the circuit breaker and stopping, at first intermittently and then every time. I called Mattson and they cheerfully agreed to come out the next morning. I confirmed myself that the control box (which would have been a cheap, easy, DIY fix) was not the cause of the problem. If the submersible pump itself was the cause, the repair cost would have been in the neighborhood of $900, or even much more according to another well company I consulted, and I was prepared for the worst. The guys arrived as arranged bright and early the next morning. There was a bitterly cold wind at the well site, but there were no complaints. After some preliminary tests that showed no obvious easy fix, we tried to determine how they could get their truck to the well. The branches of a large maple tree and overhead power lines were both in the way, so again with no complaints they agreed to try to do the work by hand. After some hard work loosening and pulling many feet of pipe from the shaft by hand, they discovered a bad wire running along the pipe, which apparently had worn through because of vibration over the years. They recognized this as the probable sole cause of the electrical problem. They repaired the wire, confirmed that the pump was now working, and closed everything up. To their credit, even though I was expecting a complete pump repair or replacement, they did not attempt to sell me any more than I needed. I wouldn't have known the difference if they had forged ahead and replaced the pump along with the wire. But they could tell the pump itself was not the problem, and they didn't try to make me think it was. They fixed what needed fixing and stopped. Although they didn't get the nice payday we were all expecting, they were polite and professional the whole time, and gave no indication of disappointment at the easy fix. They were still in good spirits as they packed up and left. The cost was more than reasonable, given the prompt service, the travel time, and the time and hard work on site. This was an excellent experience, from start to finish.
