They did a very nice job, were thorough and did extra work to make sure it worked. They cleaned up, everything worked as expected, and I received several follow up calls and had a free inspection the next year included. highly recommended

When the provider came to my house, he looked at the kitchen ceiling and looked at the toilet, but only insofar as to go up to the bathroom and look at the toilet as you or I would. The provider informed me that he was quite certain, due the age of my house, the piping running to and from the toilet was not insulated and due to the extremely hot and humid weather we had been having that there had been condensation building on the pipes. The suggestion was to eventually get insulated piping, when willing to undertake some rather extensive renovation, and in the mean time to limit the number of times the toilet was flushed during really hot weather to reduce the times cold water was running through those pipes. At the time it seemed a reasonable explanation, and frankly one I was willing to accept because I really didn't want to have a major piping issue requiring immediate repair. In retrospect, I am little frustrated how little of an inspection was done and I do seem to have more a problem than just uninsulated pipes. While I believe that a lot of what I am unhappy about with this encounter is my own complacency, I do feel that the provider had very little interest in actually trying to any real inspection to determine what the problem was and because of this, I would not want to use this provider again.
Description of Work: I purchased a big deal for this provider on Angie's List for plumbing inspection and diagnostic service hoping that the provider would be able to tell me if I had a leak in my toilet that was pooling inbetween the second floor bathroom floor and the kitchen ceiling on the first floor as there appeared to be some water staining newly appeared in the kitchen ceiling. I had called the service provider first to inquire as to whether this deal would provide coverage of the necessary services to assess my concerns.

I am working on finishing my basement bathroom and the toilet drain plumbing wasn't put in the best location by the builder. So, I wanted the plumbing moved about 18 inches. I had Air Mechanical out for an estimate along with 6 other companies. Air Mechanical quoted me a price of $1,700 which I thought sounded absolutely ridiculous, but I had only had one other estimate at the time so I didn't have much for comparison. It turns out that my initial reaction was correct as the 6 other estimates came in the $200-$600 range. I actually felt insulted that they would think I would pay that much money! I could see someone that doesn't like to do a lot of research falling into this trap and paying that price so I decided to call and talk to a manager to discuss this. Maybe it was an inexperienced plumber? If that was the case, I thought they deserved to be aware of this so that they could try and prevent this from happening again. Or maybe they would send someone out again for a new estimate? Well, I ended up leaving a message with the service manager and sure enough I never got a call back. Since they decided to ignore my call I am left to conclude that they were trying to rip me off. I am writing this review because I don't want anyone to get screwed over by these guys. I will also note that I was talking to my dad about this and he said that he had had Air Mechanical out for an estimate on a new furnace and their price was also way out of line compared to the other companies that he had out. Needless to say he didn't use Air Mechanical either. Air Mechanical seems to have decent reviews and I am not sure why. Maybe my case isn't the norm? Either way, a ridiculous estimate and no common decency to return my call leads me to advise people to stay away from this company.

Sunday morning with -8 temp outside I woke up to the furnace not working. After doing a quick diagnosis and reading the flashing light error code on the furnace I realized it was a broken component on the furnace and I had to bring in professional help. I called around to several local HVAC places and got an immediate return call from Air Mechanical. He was at the house within 30 minutes and within another 30 the furnace was functioning properly. Beside the fact I had to pay $180 for the service call (WHY DO FURNACES BREAK ON SUNDAYS???) I was really happy with the service. He showed me the broken part, had the backup part in his truck and was out of there inside of an hour. He also did a quick diagnosis of the other components of the furnace and life was good.

Thank you so much [removed member name]. We certainly appreciate the great feedback. Please keep in mind, we can credit that diagnosis down if you decide you'd like to do a maintenance plan with us. That would save you 15% on your actual repairs, as well as, reducing that initial diagnostic/trip charge down to $129 for the first time out for us. I'd be willing to honor that 30 days for you if you change your mind, and I'll make a note in the system. Thank you again for the great review! Jim Paar

If you want bad customer service then Air Mechanical is the company you should call. I called several times and left messages but my calls were not returned. On my third attempt I simply asked if someone was available to discuss routine maintenance of the air exchanger. Nope. They refused to answer even the most basic questions about the air exchange unit they installed in my home...unless I paid their technician $99 for a service call. I can understand the need to get paid for your time, and if I needed the unit serviced I would have no problem paying for the work. But refusing to even put a service technician on the phone to answer the most basic maintenance questions? That's no way to build goodwill with your customers. They also lost my business. I just hired another plumbing & heating company to install an Aprilaire humidifier on my furnace. Look elsewhere if you need furnace installation/maintenance. I will.

Air Mechanical called a few weeks ago to schedule our annual furnace tune-up for November 8. They called again yesterday to reschedule for today, November 1. We purchased a 3-year Preferred Customer Agreement from Air Mechanical for $444.00 in 2012. This covers an annual air conditioner tune-up and annual furnace tune-up. That is why there was no cost for this particular visit. The technician arrived shortly after Air Mechanical's office called to say he was on the way. He went right to work on the furnace and indicated after the work that the furnace was working well and we did not need to replace the humidifier water panel. Today's technician had never been to our home before, but as was the case with all of the Air Mechanical technicians, he was professional and respectful in his approach.

We recently purchased this house and wanted the furnace tuned up and some aspects of the heating system and the air exchanger explained to us. The technician performed the tune up and then informed us he had to "red tag" the furnace because a crack in the heat exchanger made it unsafe to run. He placed a red warning tag on the 13 year old Carrier furnace advising not to run it, shut off the gas to it, and said the parts for repair would need to be ordered. He went on to inform us that the Venmar air exchanger was not working, as the main motor and the blower assembly and defrost motor were all seized up and not operating. He wrote up the repair work for both the furnace and the Venmar air exchanger. The estimate for furnace repair was $1,127.00 and the estimate for the 13 year old Venmar air exchanger repair was $930.00. Both repairs could be reduced a little by purchasing a preferred maintenance customer plan for each unit. The techinician also said the company would call to arrange an appointment for a new furnace salesman to come out in case we chose to replace the furnace rather than repair it. Fearing immenent cold weather soon upon us, we asked they order the parts for the repairs on both the air exchanger and furnace. Later, my husband began looking at the air exchanger (we've never had one before) and said geez, $930.00 to fix that thing, I wonder what a new one would cost? So I made a few calls and was advised overwhelmingly to unplug the air exchanger, and forget it or throw it out. Apparently, they were once all the rage and part of the new building code when houses were starting to be made more airtight and energy efficient. The code was changed, many people think they are uncessary, and most who have them don't use them anymore. Naturally, some people love them, but they are not a requirement or necessity. We were advised that the idea of putting $900.00 into the repair of an air exchanger that is 13 years old and purchasing a maintenance plan for it was ridiculous. They all said, if you want an air exchanger, buy a new one! Since the air exchanger repair work Air Mechanical had advised was deemed poor advice, we started to wonder about the furnace repair they advised. We then had reputable furnace service people out to inspect and not one of them would red tag the furnace or recommend any repairs at this time. We have no idea if this was an honest mistake, poor judgement or a scam, but we will not be purchasing any maintenance programs from Air Mechanical or ever using them again.

Hi [Member name removed], I spoke with our technician and looked up the notes. I confirmed with him that you do have a crack in your heat exchanger. It is near the limit hole area on the heat exchanger, and it sounds like he tried to show your husband at the time of the call, but these can be very hard to see with the naked eye. I told him to use his camera next time to help prove it's there while he is out there. As I mentioned, these are very hard to see, and it's not uncommon for other heating companies to miss them, and in some cases not even look for them. I would be happy to send our service manager out at no charge to confirm the crack if you'd like. Many companies are not trained to find these cracks and only use a carbon monoxide reader to determine if there is a concern at the time. Although our technician did check for carbon monoxide and didn’t detect any at the time, even a small crack can expand quickly after we leave, so it is our policy to error on the side of safety and red tag the furnace when there is a crack. In talking with my technician, he agreed also that the repair on the air exchanger wouldn't make sense, and when he scheduled the comfort specialist to come out, he set up the call to quote both a furnace and air exchanger. It sounds like he failed to explain it well, but that was his intention at the time. Lastly, I also want you to know that it has been code in Minnesota since 2001 to have a balanced ventilation system in a home to help with Indoor air quality, as well as control moisture issues in the newer tighter homes that have been built since the mid to late 90’s. This allows a house to breathe, and helps efficiently control moisture and humidity. This helps with potential mold issues, as well as, helps with other indoor contaminants that affect all of us. Please let me know if you'd like a free 2nd opinion on our work, and if you change your mind on the air exchanger and/or maintenance agreements, we'd be happy to assist you in any way possible. Best Regards, Jim Paar

Woke up to no heat. Found deal on Angie's and contacted company. They sent a tech to my home following his current job. He was courteous, he called to let me know when he was coming. He found the problem shortly after he arrived. I had just bought my home and wasn't familiar with the heat pump. He found a blow fuse. He stayed for awhile longer to make sure the heater was working promptly. I would definitely use Air Mechanical for future HVAC work.

It went terribly. Although the technician was already fully prepped on what needed to be repaired - down to the location of the leak and description of the parts needed, he showed up asking what was wrong. I showed him the gas line and he said, "Hmmmmm, let me step out and see what we can figure out. I'll talk to my guys and see what we can do." Wait. You didn't come prepared to repair this?!? After sitting in my driveway for 30-40 minutes (no lie), he finally presented me with a proposed work order. The order included a $99 service charge (even though the problem had already been diagnosed and detailed by the gas company), parts and estimated labor for an additional $375. Fortunately, I know people in the business and called them before signing anything. The parts cost next to nothing (a flex connector and new flare nut) and the job takes 10 minutes or less. Highly irritated that I was still responsible for the $99 service call fee, when it was unnecessary for him to come at all to review what he already knew. Also irritated that I have to go another day without my gas range until a friend can fix it instead. I declined the rest of their inflated parts/labor fees. The technician sat in my driveway for another 10 minutes after leaving my house. Had to justify that 1 hr and 15 minute appointment he just charged me $99 for, I guess!

HI (Member name removed), I researched this call for you, and I wanted to follow-up. I just wanted to let you know the technician we sent out to your home is an experienced technician, but was a little new to Air Mechanical. He is still getting used to our flat rate pricing book, and while he was out there, he found that you have what is known as a flexible gas connector. Our service manager had to check that out and found that only recently is that an acceptable way to work on a gas line where it would pass code. So, unfortunatley our trucks were not stocked with type of material. As a result of your call, we will stock that type of line/connector going forward. This was the reason that maybe things seemed to be a little off, and it's another example why we charge a diagnostic/trip charge to go out and verify the situation, not mention paying the technician to run the call; i.e. labor, gas, etc. However, due to the misunderstanding I would certainly be willing to split the diagnostic/trip charge with you to make it right. I will make a note in the system and have our accounting department send you the difference. We really appreciate your business, and I sincerely hope we can be of service to you in the future. Sincelery, Jim Paar

First off, I called a number of heating and cooling companies and left messages at about 5:30 in the morning. Air Mechanical was the first to call me back and stated they could have a tech out in the morning. That was awesome! Normally the diagnostic/service call fee is $99 but I purchased a discounted call via Angie's List for $74. The tech arrived on time (quickly really) and was friendly and personable. He wore shoe covers and communicated well about what he was planning to do. Once he diagnosed everything he wrote up the estimate (see below). $74 for the diagnostic/service call $184 to replace the run capacitor $144 to clean the air conditioner Overall, I was very happy with the experience but the prices seemed high. That said, I honestly don't know what the going rate is. All I do know is that the replacement capacitor only costs about $20 (I looked online for my model). That means the labor was $164 for less than 30 minutes of work. For that reason I give them a B for cost (I would grade them lower but I am not sure what other companies charge). It was a 90F day with a 73F dew point and I was already $74 deep into just the service call. I didn't really have much of an option. I considered opting out of the cleaning but figured it would be best just to get it done. Bottom Line: I would call Air Mechanical again. However, there is a part of me that believes there are less expensive and equally professional heating and cooling contractors out there. Again, I would like to reiterate that I really don't know what the going rate for this work is. If $184 is not unreasonable then I would give them A's across the board.

Late with this review. Outdoor faucet broke last summer - couldn't shut off the water. Googled DIY fixes but didn't have the skills or tools to repair/replace frost-proof faucet. Called a few companies and Air Mechanical was the only one who could come out the next day. Technician was on time, very professional and courteous. He removed the frost-proof faucet and installed a new faucet which he said should last forever with no problems. He also put in a water shut off valve indoors closer to the faucet as the closest one was the main water valve. This new valve will make things really easy for me when it comes time to prep for winter. And if problems occur in future with this faucet, I can turn off the water to it. I have a 2nd frost-proof faucet that I'll be replacing. Just waiting for Air Mechanical to publish a deal as replacement costs are a bit high.

The yearly service was an underwhelming experience. Upon renewal in August, they did the furnace tune-up despite the need for the air conditioner to be serviced. We were surprised, but we let it go figuring they would schedule early spring to do the A/C tune-up. However, they called three months later to do the furnace tune-up. Although confused that their records did not reflect the August tune-up, we disregarded it as a "silly mistake." We have had good customer service from them in the past and felt it was just a mistake, until no one called to schedule the A/C tune-up in the spring. We had mostly forgotten about it until we received the bill to renew our contract. We called promptly to schedule a tune-up and could not get anyone to come out until July 16. This was less than ideal, but seemed acceptable. In the meantime, our air conditioner ran out of coolant. When we called to schedule service, and possible have our tune-up moved earlier. They insisted we pay a trip fee and diagnostic fee for this separate trip. Despite our "preferred customer agreement." If they had come to service the unit in early spring, or at least last August, they would have found that the coolant was low and we never would have run out. However, their customer service staff did not see it this way and claimed that there was no guarantee they would have found this issue on the routine service. In all, the extra trip would have cost us as much as the yearly contract, if not more. We felt we were left with no other option but to cancel the repair and schedule with someone else. We have been good customers over the years and are disappointed that they would do so little to retain our business. We also will not renew our contract. The "preferred customer agreement" is now the "ex-customer agreement."

We ended up reaching a provider that could come out the same day and see what was going on with our furnace. I believe I would have enjoyed working with this provider if their scheduling would have enabled them to come out sooner.
Description of Work: Called the provider due to a very loud clanging coming from our furnace. The woman I spoke with was very professional and friendly. She asked lots of questions that could give her and her team a good understanding of what we were experiencing. The only issue was the soonest someone could come and diagnose the problem was Wednesday, which was 5 days away at the time. Because the weather wasn't yet nice enough to have no heat at all, I had to try calling another provider that could come out sooner.

It didn't go that well. They suggested I needed to do about $300 worth of work and I remembered after I called them that I had a service contract on my hot water heater. They came in and changed one little thing and it was fine, so, I didn't have the greatest luck. They suggested that I needed a part replaced and I didn't do it because I wanted to think about it and then, it's not called Service Plus any more but it's through the utilities company and my husband suggested I call them. When I purchased through Air Mechanical it was for furnace cleaning and after they did that they suggested that this was wrong with the water heater and I felt like they were telling me I needed something I didn't.

The attempts at repairs were carried out; a new air handler for the air conditioning system was installed in a crawl space above the ceiling near our kitchen. The air conditioner seemed to be working better initially. One evening in the summer the following year, were heard a loud noise from the kitchen area. We ran to investigate and discovered a geyser of water shooting straight out of the wall, coming out of an electrical outlet. Moments later, the ceiling collapsed under the weight of an enormous flood of water that had been building up in the crawl space where the air handler had been installed. Extensive water damage from this event ultimately caused the loss of walls, ceilings, and floors through two levels of our house. An independent company hired to reconstruct the cause of the damage demonstrated that Air Mechanical had improperly installed the air handler. Water and condensation generated by the air handler during the cooling process was not permitted to drain away, resulting in gradual flooding of water throughout the area whenever the air conditioner was running. There were multiple errors in the installation, and one component had been installed backwards. Air Mechanical acknowledged the errors and accepted full responsibility. Repairs for this damage took us many months and required me to take a lot of time off work in order to meet with contractors and facilitate the reconstruction. All affected walls, ceilings, and floors had to be completely torn out, the area was completely dried, and then slowly rebuilt. Our homeowners insurance ultimately covered most, but not all, of the costs. We were left with approximately $2400 in expenses not covered by our insurance. After many, many interactions with Air Mechanical in which we requested reimbursement for this remaining expense, they gave us $400 in compensation. Following this series of events, I received frequent phone calls by Air Mechanical salesmen who were unaware that their company had destroyed our home. These employees cheerfully asked whether they could interest me in heating or air conditioning services. They apparently found it very difficult to remove our phone number from their call list.
Description of Work: The provider diagnosed our failing central air conditioning system, and attempted repairs during the summer of 2010, which included the replacement and installation of new motor and air handler.

Response from Air Mechanical Inc
We sincerely apologize for the negative experience this member had with our company. We have since taken action with the installer to ensure this will not happen again. This member was a great customer; we did offer to pay through our insurance company, but she went with her own. We strive to always be accountable, dependable, and to provide exceptional service. We hope to have the opportunity to prove this to the member and earn thier business back in the future. Sincerly, Jim Paar Air Mechanical, Inc

These guys were prompt with the estimate and scheduling the service. They helped try to identify the least costly alternatives. When it became clear that that the furnace had to be replaced they were patient and helpful with the decision process. They did a great job. They were courteous tidy and efficient during the installation. They were also helpful explaining how to use the new equipment.
Description of Work: These guys did a great job. They replaced a furnace and water heater. Checked the price and installation schedule with other firms. They got the work done quickly at a good price. They even took the time to correct some of the problem created when the old equipment was built into the house. Definitely would recommend them to others and would call them again. Actually plan to use them for ongoing maintenance on the equipment we bought. Highly recommend.

Install went very smoothly and fast. There also was an Angie's list coupon that the merchant accepted for this service that saved me even more money. I checked with multiple people in the area and Air Mechanical was not only the least expensive, they model of water softener they sell came with better warranty and has higher flow rate then competitors. Most competitors were around $2,000, Air Mechanical was around 1/2 that price. Overall very satisfied and would definitely recommend to others.

Air Mechanical called some time ago to schedule our annual service and rescheduled for this week due to the cold temperatures at the time of the previous appointment. Jeremy arrived sooner than we expected and went right to work, demonstrating a congenial attitude towards my wife and myself and a workmanlike attitude towards his tasks. He informed us that he did not need to hose off the air conditioner because it was not that dirty. He discussed briefly the condition of our unit and informed us that it was running adequately but also offered suggestions about actions to take if we wanted a quote on a newer, more efficient system. He in no way was pressuring us and reiterated that our system was working okay, just not as efficiently as a new one would. We paid nothing for this visit since our preferred customer agreement with Air Mechanical gives us an annual furnace and air conditioner tune-up. We paid $444.00 for this 3-year agreement, which we have renewed more than once because we are happy with Air Mechanical's technicians.
