It went very well. Walt and his crew are extremely professional. Walt came out himself one day to explain the whole process to me, give me an estimate, and schedule the installation of the mitigation system. On the day of the installation, he arrived first, followed by his crew, who worked diligently and accomplished the installation just as described in one day. This also entailed having an electrician come out and do some wiring, which they coordinated. Since an electrician was coming anyway, I asked Walt if he could have them install a GFCI outlet on the outside of my house, which he did, saving me the expense of a separate electrician house call. After the installation, Walt provided me with a short-term radon test kit, which came back with a result in the promised range (2.4pCi/L, down from 5.8 prior to the mitigation). About a month or so ago, I started to notice a strange noise in my basement, that went away when I turned off the radon mitigation system fan. So I called Walt, and he got back to me within a few hours, saying that it sounded like maybe we had a bad fan and that he would have one of his guys come out by the end of the week to look at it. As promised, one of his guys showed up (on the weekend, no less), and replaced the fan, which had a little debris in it. When we turned the fan back on, however, the sound was still there. After a little investigative work, the technician discovered that the noise was not being produced by the fan at all, but rather by a malfunctioning sump pump (the fan was just making the sound resonate). Despite this being totally unrelated to the radon mitigation system, the technician was kind enough to help me address the issue with the sump pump, and wouldn't even let me pay him anything. I was extremely grateful for his assistance and impressed by the generosity. I would highly recommend this company.

They do not respond promptly as there voice message states it was over 2 weeks and it is know almost 2 months Non response on email or several voice messages I Found a different company That returns calls and email and they did the job This was the only reason I signed up for Angie's List.
Description of Work: No response to e-mail or multiple voice messages over 2 week period in July this service was recommended but I should have suspected when the inspector said he is good if you can get a hold of him. Checked our records, and there is no communication either from Angies messages or our direct mail in box. nd I don't recall a tel call either. But if I dropped the ball, my apologies. We don't have a receptionist, and we do get a sometimes nearly overwhelming amount of calls. But I am generally pretty good about getting back to folks in a timely manner.

I will start by saying that we have had several people come out to give us a bid to install a radon mitigation system in our house and Walt was by far the most knowledgeable. The contract he presented to us had a clause that stated that there was no guarantee that the system would reduce the radon levels in our home to acceptable levels, and if they do not, he would have required us to rip-up the sub-floor in our basement and have it replaced at $90+ per hour. Despite that, we decided to move forward with him because we really felt confident he would get the job done. As the installation date neared, we became very nervous about the unknown and what kind-of financial hole we could find ourselves in if the system did not work. Two days before the scheduled install, we sent him an email expressing our doubts about moving forward and that we would like to discuss things further. He responded with a very childish and unprofessional email. Obviously, we would have understood his frustrations if we had cancelled so close to our install date, but we were not feeling comfortable with the contract and really just wanted to further discuss it with him. My husband called and left a message to try to further discuss things, and he never returned the call. Regardless of his frustration, he could have at least heard us out and acted professionally. We had every intention of moving forward with the install as long as he could have helped us understand things a little more clearly. As I said, he is EXTREMELY knowledgeable, but his customer service and professionalism leave something to be desired. He is also more expensive than most, but we felt it was going to be worth it (had we had the system installed). His contract is also a bit more open-ended than others we have found, which in the end, is what scared us.
Description of Work: Walt and his crew were going to install a radon mitigation system, but ultimately did not.

I'm sorry you feel this way. We actually did not perform work at your home and received no payment in kind. Rather, you requested our services and cancelled at the last minute because you were uncomfortable with our price. Your home is extremely unusual because instead of a concrete floor slab it has a wooden floor. I tried to explain that it was impossible to guarantee a reduction without being able to ensure the requisite sub "SLAB" suction. Our price was more expensive than competitors, I'd imagine, because the scope of our work required a very labor-intensive sealing of the plywood floor to ensure as much sub "slab" suction as possible. (Not doing so would have created a potential carbon monoxide issue due to combustion appliance backdrafting.) I'm not sure what you mean by childish responses. I simply cautioned you about ensuring that whomever you contracted should ensure against the carbon monoxide issue mentioned above. Hopefully the contractor you hired did the required plywood sealing. If not, you should definitely ensure that your water heater and furnace are not back-drafting. We've successfully installed a couple thousand systems since 2005, and we do things right. We have yet to receive a bad grade from anyone who actually contracted our services.

Walt and his crew did a great job installing the radon system in a day. They minimized any visible PVC piping in our basement and to the garage roof. They did a thorough and clean job. The entire crawl space is now sealed off and looks great. Walt communicated with us throughout the project about how it was going and showed us the details of the system installed. I would highly recommend Walt and his team.
Description of Work: We had elevated radon levels in our basement. Walt came out to provide us a free detailed bid for the work involved that included sealing our large crawl space area and also installing a pipe with venting to the subfloor below the basement main floor area.

Thanks very much for the compliments, especially given that the price was high due to the need for sealing up the crawl space in addition to normal suction venting. These homes can sometimes be a challenge, so really glad that we got levels super low. All the best, Walt and Crew.

We had a radon test performed when buying our home which was slightly higher than the recommended value. I inquired about services and this company provided really quality information about how to do long-term testing to confirm whether or not a mitigation system is really needed. They could have just tried to sell us a system we may or may not need but were instead helpful and "Minnesota nice". If it is confirmed that we need to install a system we will definitely be using them.

Walt was extremely professional from the very first interaction to the last. He was thorough in his communication and follow-through and scheduling was handled efficiently. They did the work on the day/time expected, reviewed everything they did with me, and cleaned up after themselves. They gave me a 5% discount for paying cash, and because they found a better route for the ventilation that did not require any electrical work - they gave me another $100 off, Rarely do you find such great workmanship and customer service. I highly recommend Walt and Advanced Radon Services!

After checking consumer reviews on Angie's List, one company stood out. Advanced Radon Services was a clear choice. We were impressed with the initial consultation on March 27 with Walt Fitzmaurice, who detailed a plan to install a sub-slab depressurization system in which the pipe to exhaust the gas would be internally routed and concealed from inside of a basement closet up through the main floor entry closet, up into the second floor knee wall and out the roof. Walt recommended two suction points to achieve the lowest radon levels possible. The installation on June 29 was professional from start to finish. Our radon levels went from an average of 7 to 9 pCi/L pre mitigation level to a post mitigation level of .7 pCi/L. We highly recommend Advanced Radon Services for their experience, knowledge, and integrity. Every home will have its own unique challenges like ours and these are the professionals that will give you the best solution.

Walt and his crew were fantastic! He went through exactly what they were doing and why they were doing it. The workers were very polite, efficient, knowledgable, and clean. The rooms where they were working were cleaner after the install than they were before it. The job was done in one day, as promised, including the electrical work, which was arranged by Walt as well. I only gave a B for the price because I did get quotes from other companies that were cheaper. But I went with Advanced Radon based on recommendations on this site, and simply because I had confidence that Walt would get the job done right the first time.

Thanks so much for the kind words. And I know the price was steep on this one. But it was almost wholly attributable to the quite complicated sub contracted electrical, which ended up costing over 25% of the total price. Still, much appreciate your positive comments. The crew (Mike and Sam) showed up right at 9 as promised and Walt arrived a few minutes later. Walt reviewed the job again with me and his crew and they got started. Walt explained the system operation as we as the follow test procedure. Job went well too 7 hours, crew was iimpeciably clean, neat and very courteous..I can't say enough about the neatness of the job. I did a lot of research on approaches to mitigation and after I read Walt's website and talked to him I knew he was doing it right. I cannot comment if the cost was the lowest or the highest as I did not shop around but I am extremely pleased with the work. When guys are cutting holes in your wall and roof I am going with a company I can be sure knows what there doing. The orginal radon test I performed in the utility room where the sump is located came in at 6.9. Not really high but above the EPA recommendation over 4. 24 hours after the system was installed I did a re-test for 3 days and the result came in at 0.3....I will let the numbers speak for the performance of the system Walt, Mike and Sam, Thanks again it was pleasure to meet and work with you.

I've actually never left a bad review on here before. Unfortunately, Walt decided not to respond to my emails or voicemails for the past week. Walt had been to our home previously to provide an estimate. He stipulated we would have to pay an exploratory fee to determine the route unless I opened up the wall and could see a clear route. I did just that. But the night before he was supposed to return to our home, he said we would have to pay a fee. I told him I had already opened up the wall, and copied his prior email to show what we had agreed to. He never responded - to that email or voicemails. I would have preferred he notify me during our previous communication if he just really didn't want to do the job.

I regret we couldn’t meet your expectations. However, your negative comments leave off some essential details: You actually hired another contractor instead of us to perform the mitigation because the other contractor promised something he later realized he couldn’t deliver – either because of lack of experience or, more likely, because he didn’t come out to take a good hard look at your home to provide an honest and thorough assessment. In contrast, we provided an in-home consult months ago followed by a firm bid. You were quite intent on an inside route, which we always try to achieve as per “best practices.” But our appraisal of the home provided a frank assessment of the likely difficulty in meeting your expectation that an inside pipe routing would be a viable option. (We do more tricky inside stuff than anyone in the state; if we can’t do it, frankly I don’t know who can.) I was frank during the consult that the internal pipe routing would likely be iffy at best given the extremely narrow internal wall widths and potential structural impediments. Hence our bid included an exterior option should the internal routing not be possible. So you hired another contractor instead. And he “bailed” on you to use your words. (Pure speculation here, but again I imagine this contractor didn’t do an in-home consult, or perhaps just didn’t have the general experience or even carpentry skills to know what spacial and structural impediments he was up against.) Upon the other contractor “abandoning” your home, you called us to request a second in-home “assessment” to address the work the other contractor had left asunder. I explained that, while we’d be glad to honor our original bid, our work would not include the cost of un-doing some other contractor’s mess, which is most often more costly than the new work itself. (Sorry, normally we have time to tackle this sort of thing, but honestly, at present, we’re absolutely swamped.) It’s a little ironic that your criticism is directed at us -- the only contractor who appears to have provided you with an honest, realistic assessment based on a thorough in-home inspection. Perhaps your comments would be better directed to the guy you hired who promised but didn’t deliver? Had you contracted our services from the git go, I think your comments would perhaps have been more positive. Past is not prologue, of course, but frankly we’ve been working our tails off for ten years now to deliver uncommonly good quality radon mitigation work to over 2500 satisfied customers (not one of whom we’ve ever “bailed” on). To date, not one of these customers has complained about our work. Best, Walt ‘n Team

In the last 5 years, we previously have had our deck replaced, windows replaced (Andersen's), 2 bathroom remodeling, hard wood floor and tile floor installation, exterior repainting, kitchen countertop replacement and pavers installation at our home thus have worked with many, different contractors. But, I have never been so pleased or impressed with the thorough pre-work and followup until Walt came along! That is why I am doing this review (otherwise, I am too busy to do one!) The communication and courtesy and language is so PROFESSIONAL and excellent. Wish everyone else was like that! He seems to care about doing a great job! I wasn't able to meet Walt personally, but as a followup, Walt even provided detailed instructions of re-testing, how to monitor for how well the fan/pump is working. The work is warranted for 5 years, but according to Walt the pump should function for a good 10-12 years. We own radon digital monitors with 1-day and 7-day averages for radon measurement in our basement and 2nd level of our house. Our radon level in the basement significantly reduced from a short-term average of 6-8 to an impressive < 1 (0.2-0.4) and on 2nd level, it reduced from 2-4 to <1 (0.2-0.3). Considering how long the winter is and how long we have to stay indoors throughout the year in Minnesota, our health is well worth the cost! Wish we knew to have this fixed sooner. A BIG thank you to Walt and Mike for caring about what they do and making our home a healthier place to live!
Description of Work: Advanced Radon Services' Walt responded promptly after I submitted a request for a radon mitigation system evaluation. He was the best at responding and following up out of the 3 companies I called. One did not even call back despite a 2nd call from me. Walt gave us a thorough evaluation and estimate for free--even my science-geek husband was impressed with his knowledge. He was very organized and detailed. His one-man crew, Mike, for this job completed a "Direct tie-in to drain tile and gravel field, and pipe routing" with a fan pump installed in the attic to remove the radon from our home. Mike even reinforced a joist where earlier tradesmen had compromised the joist structure without additional charge. Walt said "It’s better than new."

Fantastic! Walt was here 15 minutes early and the crew at exactly 9am. The install went as planned, both crew members were extremely professional and courteous, and like Walt, took the time to keep me informed of the progress. The install requires an electrician, and Advanced uses Block Electric. The coordination of the electric work to coincide with the Radon System work went very smooth. When the install was completed, the time again was taken by the crew to explain the operational characteristics of the mitigation system. When they left, it was as if they were never here.
Description of Work: Radon Mitigation System installed. Had two quotes from Angie's list providers, install price almost the same for each, the difference was Advanced Radon's detailed explanation on the overall issue, potential install plans as well as potential problems. Walt was at my home for about one and one half hours. The quote was as detailed as his explanation of service to be provided, the other company was at my home less than 30 minutes and the email quote was about a paragraph ion length.

Walt was on site with his talented crew promptly as promised at 9:00 AM and expected to be on site, including electrical, till about 2:00 PM. Well, Brothers Electric was available a little early and the Advanced crew made there work accessible without incident. The Advanced team of Ben and Sam completed the install without incident and all PVC in place, fan working and monitoring in place by 1:00 PM. My last radon test was 6.3. My post mitigation test just came back at 0.3, for all practical purposes, equivalent to levels found outdoors in fresh air. WOOT, WOOT!

Walt was very responsive and very professional. I was pleased that, unlike other companies, he was happy to come to my home and review with me the system and how it might be installed. He was great at explaining every detail of how the radon reduction system worked and how it would be routed from our basement and up through our roof. Walt?s bid included the radon reduction system and a line item for electrical and a line item for a second suction point if the sub-slab soils dictated. As it turned out, due to the clay/silt content of our soils, the second suction point was required. When the day for installation arrived, Walt again met me and reviewed the systems and the plan for the day. His crew went to work around 9:00 and finished up around 5:00. They left my home cleaner than when they arrived!

I had done a short term and long term radon home test kit, and had indications of higher level radon in my 100 year old home in St Paul. Walt was prompt in responding to my email contact via his website, and extremely helpful in my home visit - also very prompt. As a fellow Navy veteran, I appreciated his background and experience and certainly can tell that his attention to detail and robust analytic approach to problem solving have been cultivated over many years of service to others. Based upon his review of my particular situation, he determined that the best solution to my particular homes age, style and design were probably best remedied through a different channel than a normal venting system. He was knowledgeable and thorough in his approach to review the best alternatives to help my home and I would STRONGLY recommend him to anyone looking for a trusted advisor to improve their homes.
