The overall experience was great. Walt spent time with us before we hired him. He explained how the system worked and happily and patiently answered all our questions. He was the most professional contractor we've ever worked with. His bid was higher than the other bid we got, but we knew we would be in great hands with Walt. He always called to confirm his arrival time - he never left us hanging. He put the house back exactly as he found it (even resealing our attic door). I wish he did more than radon so I could hire him for more things! I had read a previous poster's comments that Walt should give lessons on customer service to other contractors. It is absolutely true.
Description of Work: Walt installed a radon mitigation system for our house. The price included "Comprehensive Sub Slab Depressurization designed for maximum radon reduction with two suction points, utilizing 3 inch schedule 40 vent pipe in tee configuration and single suction fan" and the cost of an electrician to install an electric switch in the attic for the fan.

Walt was extremely professional, courteous and expedient. His workers were very conscientious and considerate. I felt that he tried to find the best solution while being cost, effective. He took the time to explain the process and answer questions thoroughly. On a side note, he suggested other pointers on how to best care for my house. Since I'm a first-time home owner, this was very helpful and informative. The abatement was relatively straightforward and the system he installed is unimposing. Other friends hired Walt and were just as satisfied as I was. Thanks Walt!

A day or two before Walt was scheduled to arrive at my home, he called and left a very courteous message telling me that he and his partner had decided that taking off their shoes in my home was a bit too much to ask of them. Therefore, they had decided to pass on the opportunity. This tells me that I am in the wrong industry. Clearly, Walt has plenty of jobs to choose from if taking off his shoes was just too much to ask. I was shocked that a small business owner would make such a poor decision. As proud homeowners who built our home less than 4 years ago, my wife and I are very particular about who we will allow into our home to do work of any kind. Walt seemed determined to overcome my concerns when we first spoke, but I guess he thought about it further and decided we would be tough customers. Here is my advice to Walt for his next quote to picky customers like me. Quote the job for an extra $100-$200. Picky customers will pay for better service and contractors who will show extra concern and care for their homes.
Description of Work: Walt discussed his services in detail with me over the phone. We must have spent 20-30 minutes talking about what he would propose doing to mitigate high radon levels in my home. At the conclusion of the phone call, we had an appointment scheduled for him to visit my home, plan the job, and provide me with a written quote.

I WAS TRYING TO BE HELPFUL IN SPENDING NEARLY A HALF OUR ON THE PHONE WITH YOU TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS, MOST OF WHICH PERTAINED TO YOUR EXTREME CONCERN ABOUT CLEANLINESS. WE MAINTAIN A 100% POSITIVE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RATING FOR CUSTOMERS WHO ACTUALLY USE OUR SERVICES. IN YOUR CASE, I ATTEMPTED TO ANSWER YOUR DETAILED QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO CLEANLINESS, SUCH AS HOW WE WOULD ENSURE THAT WE WOULD NOT TOUCH YOUR WALLS, REMOVE SHOES UPON ENTERING AND MAINTAIN OUR FOOT TRAFFIC TO PATHS OF PLASTIC SHEETING YOU WOULD PROVIDE. YOUR COMMENTS REGARDING OUR REFUSAL TO REMOVE OUR SHOES ARE DISINGENUOUS: I EXPLAINED TO YOU IN THE MESSAGE THAT, GIVEN THE FACT THAT IT WAS BELOW ZERO DEGREES OUTSIDE, IT WOULD BE TOO MUCH TO EXPECT THAT MY EMPLOYEES REMOVE THEIR SHOES OUTSIDE PRIOR TO EACH ENTRY INTO YOUR HOME. I EXPLAINED TO YOU THAT OUR STANDARD OPERATING POLICY IS ALWAYS TO REMOVE OUR SHOES INSIDE (IN WINTER) PRIOR TO PLACING TARPS CAREFULLY DOWN (TO WHICH YOU OBJECTED, SAYING THEY THEY MIGHT BE DIRTY), TO USE HEPA VACS TO ELIMINATE DUST DURING WORK, AND TO THOROUGHLY CLEAN ANY SMALL REMAINING DIRT UPON COMPLETION. I SHOULD HAVE SIMPLY TOLD YOU I FELT YOUR EXPECTATIONS WERE UNREALISTIC, BUT I DID NOT WANT TO OFFEND YOU. I'VE LEARNED THAT, IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN OUR RECORD OF 100% CUSTOMER SATISFACTION -- OVER 700 CUSTOMERS AND COUNTING -- IT'S BETTER TO POLITELY DECLINE WORK WHEN A POTENTIAL CUSTOMER'S EXPECTATIONS ARE NOT REALISTIC.

The experience with Walt was very good! Walt spent a lot of time with us explaining the process for radon mitigation and how it would interact with the mechanicals in our home. He was extremely thorough and patient with our many questions. I believe when he left I had a full understanding of what needed to be done. Our current radon level is 6.4pCi/L. The overall cost estimate is $1585 + $250 contracted electrical if desired for Sub-Slab Depressurization and Pressure Field Extension Test. We are going to be doing a basement remodel in 2-3 years and decided to wait until then to have the radon mitigation system installed. That way we can have the pipes put in and figure out the best place to put them based on the layout of our remodel. Walt is very conscientious and we will more than likely use his services when we are ready.
Description of Work: We had an in-home consultation and no work performed. Walt came out and spent close to 1 1/2 hours with us.

Walt consulted with us and carefully explained the best way to deal with our somewhat complex situation. He is very knowledgeable about this topic; he was patient and took time to answer all of our questions. He and a co-worker did both phase one and phase two of our abatement process. They were exceedingly competent, meticulous, professional, and very considerate. The work achieved the goal we had hoped for, reducing our levels to below outdoor levels. We would highly recommend this company, without any hesitation. The materials used were of the best quality and the work done with precision. This is the kind experience you dream of having when you hire a company to do work on your home!

I got 4 estimates for this job, and chose them. They found that my walls and basement floor were harder to drill into, but they did a splendid job. They had to work around what had already been done for the basement waterproofing to seal everything in the spaces. It was part of their proposal that they would move the heavy appliances and furniture out of the way and put it back, which was not mentioned in any other bids that I received. They were very good about cleaning up afterward. He was very patient in waiting for a shower drain system to be installed in the basement before they could do their work. I was very pleased with them. Price includes their electrician.

Walt Fipzmaurice, the owner, came out and walked me through all the things that one needs to take into consideration when getting radon done. He was very friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. I felt like he was not looking into scamming me into doing more than necessary. He worked with me to find a way to put the pipe in the house without it being visible. He did the work exactly when and how he said he was going to. Not only did he do a great job, but he was very good about educating me. He is he most impeccable contractor I've ever had for anything. He was incredibly neat and tidy and cleaned up after himself.

Walt and his crew are very professional and knowledgeable and did an excellent job. Their initial approach was to just have one suction point in my basement. When this didn't provide the level of airflow necessary they installed a second suction point. All of this was explained in advance, so there were no surprises and it did not affect the price. The system continues to pull hard and Walt said that this may affect the life of the in-line fan, however, he guaranteed the fan and if it failed he would replace it. After 2-1/2 years, it continues to work fine and has never been a problem. I was concerned that we might be able to hear the fan, since it is located near our bedroom on the outside of the house, but you can't hear it at all.
Description of Work: Installed radon mitigation system in my basement, vented out through foundation to outside wall of home (not through the roof). Prior to installation, radon levels measured 3.9 pCi/L (just below the cause-for-concern threshold of 4). After the system was installed radon levels dropped to 0.7 pCi/L. Radon mitigation systems involve drilling 1, or more, holes in the concrete slab of your home's basement and connecting PVC piping to these holes (with an airtight seal) that vents to the outside. An in-line fan installed in PVC piping and located outside your home, or in your attic, provides the suction necessary to give the radon gas a path of least resistance from beneath your home to the outside without ever entering your home. This is messy work but after they were finished you could hardly tell they were there. Walt came over several days before the work began to talk through different scenarios and help to locate the best position for the holes and ventilation so that they would be as unobtrusive as possible. After he left the only thing I had to do was to paint the PVC outside the house to match the color of our siding.

Excellent! The service from this company was really good, and even though their price was somewhat higher than another company that we received a bid from, the level of professionalism and expertise was far superior. Walt promised that their service would be fast (but thorough), efficient, effective, and that they would not leave a mess. This is what we got, and I would hire them again if needed and would not hesitate to recommend them to someone else. In addition, Walt and his co-worker were a joy to work with, answering my many questions with patience and concern :)
Description of Work: Radon mitigation - Drain tile depressurization, vent pipe with fan in garage rafters, all sealing for mitigation, air tight sump pump cover with 4" 'quick check' airtight compression fitting port, and airtight grommet for humidifier condensation hose. Walt was punctual, courteous, and very knowledgeable. After the initial visit he gave me an estimate with guaranteed price and radon reduction value. I chose him even though two competitors were $100-200 cheaper. He arrived with an assistant to do the work and spent a lot of time explaining all facets of the job to me. He worked with me to optimize the placement and aesthetics of the vent tubing in our basement. Radon levels went from 5.6 pre to 0.4 picocuries post-mitigation. We even double checked the post-mitigation test that he provided with another independent test with nearly an identical reading. I would highly recommend Walt.

Walt was a pleasure to work with and very knowledgeable. The work was done very professionally. When the re-test showed that further work would not result in the needed reduction, he stopped work, repaired and cleaned up what had been done AND REFUSED TO TAKE ANY MONEY (even when I offered to pay for his time and effort) because he had not been able to complete the job through no fault of his own. In addition, he provided information that would help me deal with other vendors who could perform an alternate reduction method (air exchange) that he does not do. Both the professional approach (testing first, not just doing the work blindly and coming back to do more if the reduction did not reach the required level (as had been proposed by other companies that offered lower priced bids)) and his business values (directing me to other vendors when he thought his services would not give a good result) distinguish him and his company.
Description of Work: Walt performed extensive testing to determine the best methods to mitigate radon in our home. He gave a detailed estimate for Active Soil Depressurization with specific guarantees. He also explained the work to be done, in plain English, pointing out the unknown factors and the possible additional work that might be needed. He began work and re-tested the subsoil airflow before advancing too far. The re-test showed that further work would not result in a satisfactory reduction.

Walt is a top-notch small business owner. I would happily recommend him to anybody looking for this type of service and education. Phone messages were returned very promptly, good information left while playing "phone tag" that did not hold up the process at all and he came out on a Saturday! When he insisted on removing his shoes even knowing we'd be headed for the creepy old basement I knew he was a good guy! We chose to have a testing device in place for 72 hrs so it will be suitable for an upcoming real estate transaction. The results were received within 2 days of our last meeting, couldn't ask for more. I am certain we will use Walt again for our next home to be certain there isn't a problem there either!

I already have a radon abatement system in place, but couldn't find out why the pipe was sweating. We were looking to finish the basement and wanted to enclose the wall, but couldn't with a wet pipe behind. Walt took a lot of time on the phone with me, listened to the problem and recommended a number of fixes, all of which we could do ourselves. Other estimates ranged up to $800 for an exhaust fan, but we solved the problem with Walt's suggestions and some extra insulating materials we already had on hand.

Walt and Mike were EXCELLENT. Everything about this business was professional, timely, and expert. Walt was able to do the work about a week after he came to do the estimate, even though it was right after the holidays. He obviously has a lot of experience doing this. He told me exactly what he would do, explained everything, and made sure I didn't have any questions about it. I really felt like I could trust him. He called the day before to let me know he was coming and was right on time. They put down sheets on the floors where they had to walk, even down the basement stairs. They had to remove a built-in desk to get at the workspace but replaced it exactly as it had been. The clean-up was perfect, and I am very picky! Aside from having the new pipe, I wouldn't know they had been there. Walt obviously cares about removing radon from a home. There are federal EPA guidelines about radon mitigation, and he knew them well. I would definitely hire him again.
Description of Work: Walt and Mike installed a radon mitigation system in our house. They drilled two holes in the basement floor, installed drain tiling in dirt crawl space under 18' x 13' family room, and installed PVC piping to suck air out of the ground underneath the house. They also laid poly sheeting in a crawl space. They ran piping along an I-beam in basement, up through the garage floor, up through garage rafters, and out the garage roof. They installed a fan in the garage rafters (above ceiling in garage).

From the initial bidding process through the completion of the work, Walt was always available to answer any questions about radon and the mitigation process. He is very knowledgeable and approachable. What we were most impressed with was his attention to the placement of the system in relation to the aesthetics of our house. It is not a pretty system, but he placed it in the least obtrusive way, taking into consideration possible plans for remodeling, as well as its exterior appearance. Best of all, our radon levels were reduced from 17 pCi/L to <0.3 pCi/L. Their bid was slightly higher than others that we received, but for the extra knowledge and professionalism it was well worth it.
Description of Work: Walt and his crew installed a sub-slab depressurization system with two suction points in our basement. They also sealed off the floor of the crawl space under our addition, and teed off a smaller vent pipe from the crawl space into the main suction system. The ventilation fan was mounted to an exterior wall with the exhaust pipe extending above the roof-line. They also performed several Pressure Field Extension Tests to insure that all areas below the foundation were receiving the suction needed to mitigate the radon. All work was completed in one day and they cleaned up after themselves very well, both inside and out. They arrived on time and were very professional throughout.

This was a great experience from start to finish. Walt, the owner, came out to assess our home and give us a bid. He spent a great deal of time examining our house and explaining all our options. He had hoped to run the exhaust pipe up along our chimney, but after a thorough investigation (climbing around in the attic, looking at basement access) determined this wouldn't work. He helped us decide our next best choice. He came out again before beginning the work to finalize the details of the project. The day of the installation, he came with two helpers and an electrician he'd hired. Everything went smoothly, from preparation to setup to cleanup. He was very thorough about explaining what they were doing. A small garden fixture inadvertently got broken in the process, and he later sent a very generous gift card to a local garden store in response. He informed us about follow-up testing and followed up with us when it was completed.
Description of Work: We tested for radon in our 1908 house and came up with a high reading. We hired Advanced Radon Services to install radon abatement equipment. They sealed cracks and crevices in our basement floor and installed an exhaust pipe connected to a fan in the attic. Our radon reading went from a 5+ to a .3. We feel smarter, healthier, and happier.
