FANTASTIC! Walt Fitzmaurice and his team were courteous, punctual, professional, and just plain nice. They were very clear about what would happen, when, and what to expect afterward. They provided follow-up test kits, and when the radon levels were not as low as guaranteed, they came back. They used continuous radon monitor devices to pinpoint our radon levels. They installed a bigger fan and a second suction point, and provided more follow-up test kits, all at no extra charge. Now the results are well within the guaranteed levels. A major plus with Walt and his team is how respectful, kind and considerate they were, particularly with our young children who were weary of strangers coming in the house. They really put us all at ease and did a fantastic job, and we are picky customers. We would DEFINITELY hire them again, but we don't have to because they did such a great job! We recommend them to all our friends and family.
Description of Work: Installed radon mitigation system, including piping from two suction points in basement out to garage roof, fan for suction, and sealing cracks and joints in basement slab. They also provided follow-up test kits and came back to make changes when the results were not as expected.

We had 3 estimates for radon reduction work, and decided to go with Advanced Radon based on Walt's knowledge and very thorough description of radon and the work to be performed. Their prices were right in line with the other bids we received. The extra bit that put them over the top was the fact that they did a diagnostic test (a tiny hole drilled into the cement in our garage, with suction applied to a different area) prior to the work to ensure that it would be effective. I understand from the Minnesota Health Dept. that this is a bit of extra certification that most contractors don't have. For our situation (radon levels were high at up to 30 pCi/L and we have an unusual home layout with a tuckunder garage and separate foyer/crawlspace), he recommended to "connect" these two areas to one suction point, then draw the radon out through the back of the house. Surprisingly, he was the only contractor to actually look at both areas when he came to bid the job. One company actually wanted to provide an estimate over the phone without even coming out! Walt and his team were extremely professional, knowledgeable and courteous. He took the time to answer all our questions (there were many!), they were on time for the job and completed the work in a day. I was especially impressed by how well they cleaned everything up (even sealing some additional holes in our garage floor that they did not create), and after all was said and done he charged LESS than he estimated. A follow up test showed our radon levels to be below 0.3 pCi/L ? extremely happy about that! Since I'm so overdue in providing this report, I can also say that from all the snow this winter, our system froze up at one point. We called Walt and he was out the very next day. All that needed to be done was to clear out the pipes and we were up and working again in minutes. We are so pleased with Advanced Radon - excellent job, exceptional, friendly folks to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
Description of Work: Installed a radon mitigation system involving 2 areas: (crawl space) and basement that effectively reduced our radon levels from a high of 30 pCi/L to less than 0.3 post installation.

I found this firm here on Angie's list. In fact the reason I joined was to scope out radon mitigation services. A few years ago, we had gotten a quote from a different contractor, who had come highly recommended by a trusted source. But we only recently decided to go ahead with radon mitigation, and I wanted to turn to Angie's List for at least one other opinion. I saw the good reviews for Walt and gave him a call. I'm extremely glad I did -- worth the annual AL fee alone just for this one recommendation! He could not have been more professional, informative or honest. Walt thoroughly explained our options and ended up recommending we install a mechanical air exchanger instead of having him vent the radon as the best way to lower the levels in our particular house and set of circumstances. He told us this is what he would do if it were his own house. How rare is that kind of integrity! The contractor we spoke to a few years ago never advised us of any options other than the venting and didn't seem nearly as knowledgable. My husband is an engineer who asks a lot of technical questions and usually puts contractors through their paces, and he was equally impressed with Walt's expertise as well as character. We would highly recommend him to others!
Description of Work: No services were actually performed, except for the very informative initial consultation, because Walt actually recommended a solution for us that didn't involve his own work.

Walt came to the house and gave us a very thorough explanation of how the mitigation would work, when they could do it , how much it would cost and how long it would take. We scheduled the work and Walt and a coworker came out and completed the work in about 5 - 6 hours. It went very smoothly. They were a few minutes early and called to ask if that was ok. They cleaned up as though they were never there. They also arranged for a sample of the air to be sent into a professional service after the mitigation was complete to confirm our results.. We went from 5.9 before to 0.3 afterwards, ; They delivered exactly what was promised as was described in the written bid. We have never worked with a more responsible contractor. We would definitely recommend Advanced Radon to anyone.
Description of Work: Our radon level was at 5.9 and we needed to have it mitigated. Walt and his coworker drilled a hole in the basement floor and ran a pipe up the wall and out into the garage and then out the roof to vent any radon continuing to leak into the house. They also sealed the sump pump basket (it can still be opened to check the sump pump) and also sealed under the basement level shower stall. An electrician was required to install an outlet for the fan in the roof of the garage. They arranged for that to be done at the same time, although they were fine with us getting our own electrician if we wanted.

Walt was very honest with me about my options-- we have radon levels that are around 3.4 in the basement, <0.3 on the first floor. The basement is finished and the kids play down there. Walt ended up advising me against using his services given the pros and cons of mitigation for our 101 year old house but gave me suggestions about how to reduce the levels of radon. I really appreciate his candor and his willingness to essentially donate his time to me to help me figure all of this out,
Description of Work: Walt was very professional and generous with his time. He consulted with me over the phone, came to my house, provided an estimate and then more guidance after we retested the radon levels during heating season.

Walt was extremely professional, patiently explaining the details of how radon accumulates as well as options for mitigation. After reviewing our situation and radon levels, he concluded that their system would do an excellent job of mitigating the radon, but due to the age and construction of our home said that the results would be aesthetically very unappealing. Since we have an air exchanger, he suggested we consider upgrading to a different unit that could assist with removing more radon without the aesthetic issues.

Walt and his crew have been wonderful. From the start, Walt came out to do an estimate when it was easiest for myself and my spouse to meet him and talk thru our questions. Walt is educated, concientious and very professional. He helped us understand the concerns for our home and what options he had for us. We found "lower" levels of radon on a short term test on our 2006 built home this summer. We decided we wanted to adjust that if at all possible. Walt and his crew on the install were able to walk us thru things again and was courteous in our home and with our kids. They cleaned up and were done when expected, no added costs, just a great job. We have not tested yet but are expecting our radon numbers to be lower. We were impressed with Walt and his understanding of the job and I would not hesitate to recommend him to my friends and family.

The installer came and did an excellent job. I was especially pleased with how wonderfully well he cleaned up the job area, especially given the fact that he had to drill through a 10 to 12 inch concrete slab in several places. A follow-up test showed that the mitigation system was effective, reducing the radon in the same tested area to 0.7 pCi/L.
Description of Work: A radon analysis report showed that my home tested high for radon . . . 6.8 picocuries/litre. Based on the highly favorable comments submitted by other Angie's List members, I contacted Walt. He explained that the depressurization system his company uses to reduce radon levels would involve installing two suction points in the basement and an in-line fan in the attic, as well as sealing the basement slab. The cost would be $1285 for the system and $200 for the electrician.

Our home tested high for radon (6.5 pCi/L last summer, 12.2 pCi/L last winter) so we solicited bids for a radon remediation system. During the initial evaluation, Walt, the owner, noted we had an open drain tile system in the basement and recommended sealing the drain tile ridge cove. I had not heard of this before, so Walt actually suggested that I contact the state health department to get independent feedback. After consultation with the health department, I determined that Walt's approach was sound. On installation day, the crew of two arrived on time as promised. They were exceptionally professional and went over all the details of the installation with me, including what they were planning to do and where the suction piping would be located. They were also respectful of my home, wearing booties and putting down mats over the flooring to keep them clean. Walt arrived that morning as well to make sure everything was on-track, and checked in during the course of the day. The thing that really struck me about Walt is his impeccable attention to detail, and willingness to patiently discuss in detail any questions. (As others have commented, I wish I could hire Walt for other projects.) Everything went smoothly, with a clean and professional installation. Our follow-up test came back at 1.9 pCi/L. I'm exceptionally satisfied, and know my family will be healthier thanks to Walt and his crew.

We purchased a Safety Siren continuous RADON monitoring system (looks like a Carbon Monoxide detector). You can imagine our surprise when short term tested showed readings of 28 and 21 when the safe max is 4.0! Panic! Called Walt. He was very reponsive and was able to come out the next day at lunch to do an inspection of our home. Walt is clearly very knowledgable on the subject and was able to answer all my many questions and concerns. Also very personable and easy to talk to--really felt like he was listening. It is obvious that he is passionate about helping people with this problem. We tested with Walt's detector, side by side with ours and it turned out that our's was defective (though accurate) in that it was not displaying the decimal point. Talk about emotional distress for no reason! :( Based on the readings our house has Radon but not at the critical levels described by the EPA. Still--no level of Radon is safe of course. I am still considering getting this done in the fall anyways. Very reasonable price and why take a chance. I will definitely go with Walt for all the reasons I mentioned above and so should you! Don't hestiate--he knows his stuff!
Description of Work: Walt did an assessment of our house in the sub-slab areas, focusing around the basement furnice utility room where the sump pump was located. Provided detailed information about remediation including the location and best set-up. Left his detector with us while on vacation (agreed to $100 charge). Provided a timely, detailed and comprehensive guaranteed bid.

In short, Walt Fitzmaurice from Advanced Radon Services was a true PROFESSIONAL, in every sense of the word. Walt came out to my home to do an initial structural review and determine overall feasibility of a mitigation system. In this first visit, it was evident that Walt was very knowledgable, courteous and displayed excellent follow up skills. Walt took the time to explain the system, what happens, what they will need to do, etc... He was patient in answering all of my questions. Once the PFET was verified, Walt's installation team scheduled an installation. His team was just as professional as him. They did an excellent job and were minimally obtrusive during the process. I would HIGHLY recommend Advanced Radon Services to anyone that is looking to install a Radon mitigation system in their home.
Description of Work: 1st a PFET (Pressure Field Extension Test) was done to verify the feasibility of a Radon Mitigation system in our home. This was FREE of charge. Once confirmed, then the Comprehensive Sub Slab Depressurization mitigation system was installed. This system is designed for maximum radon reduction in the home.

Walt and his team did an outstanding job! Walt is punctual, professional, personable and clearly knows his business. In addition, the vapor barrier in our basement (which was installed by a separate contractor) was not "sticking" well. To ensure the system actually performs, Walt and his team went around my entire basement and reapplied another product to the vapor barrier...and at no extra charge. I only wish I could hire Walt for my other home projects!

Hallelujah! Thanks to Walt?s work in mitigating our radon level, we now feel safe again using our fully finished basement. We had tested for radon and found the level to be 7.3 pCi/L ? well above the EPA recommended action level. The test results after Walt?s work came back at 0.7 pCi/L. What an improvement! Walt was such a pleasure to work with! He took lots of time to explain the process and answer all of our questions. He was thorough in pre-testing to determine the effective placement of suction holes and venting pipe. He was meticulous in cleaning up. He was punctual, responsive, and professional in everything he did. He impressed us with his knowledge, workmanship, and careful efforts to give us the best possible results! We are recommending him to all our friends.

Overall, we were vey happy to have Walt fix our radon problem. He is a very nice person
Description of Work: Our home had high levels or Radon (12.1 pCi/L - 19.0 pCi/L) I called Walt and we made an appointment for him to come to our house. He explained to me what he would do to fix the problem, then I asked several questions about other options and he answered very honestly and easy to understand. He then sent us a contract/estimate detailing the work and the guarantee. I called him back and made an appointment for the following week. He and two other employees were on time at 8:00am and immediately started the work. They were done by 4:00pm. He left a kit to measure the radon. In this one we got 0.5 pCi/L.

From the very start of the service I was very impressed by Walt. He is so passionate about his work and his customers. I could not create a higher recommendation for his services. He runs an amazing business. I have an old house and did not have a good location for the big pvc pipe. Walt talked through all the other mitigation techniques that would potentially work. He even recommended some, like an air exchanger, that would have mean't potentially going with a HVAC vendor. He truly wanted the best decision to be made for me, the customer. Even if it meant he was giving away a large portion of business. After I explained that I had a test done just a couple of years ago that was low, we agreed to make sure we understood the problem. He also recommended sealing a large dirt hole where the plumbing stack went out. I did this myself before the test. Then Walt came out again and setup the test equipment. Long story short, after retesting, the radon level was well within the limits. So he saved me a few thousand dollars. It would have been so easy to just draft up an estimate for the mitigation system, like the other vendors, but Walt took the time to understand and then provide meaningful recommendations. I am so happy I called him. Thanks Walt!
Description of Work: I had a few companies come out and give me an estimate for Radon mitigation. Walt and I discussed the problem and he recommended a retest because of different factors before putting in a system. I ended up utilizing Walt's expertise and his testing service.

Although there was unexpected complexity in this job, we could not have been in better hands. Walt and his staff were awesome and we endorse them 100%. They are extremely knowledgeable, detail oriented, and conscientious. Walt explained all of our options in great detail and clearly is an indoor air quality expert. The radon mitigation in our case meant running a pipe from the basement sub slab up through the roof of our two story house. Walt put a lot of time and thought into doing so in the least obtrusive way. He was able to run the pipe though an exiting soffet and a corner of a closet, and did it so well we cold barely tell he had been here. He had to take the closet shelves down to do the work and when he put them back up, he even secured them to the wall better than they were in the first place. There was something of a surprise that was encountered on the job when Walt discovered previous owners of the house had done work that did not comply with code and could compromise the radon mitigation. He insisted on spending an extra couple of hours fixing it to ensure that our system worked properly and did not charge us. Walt really and truly cared about us and the quality of the work he performed. We have never experienced this level of customer service before. We had other contractors who didn't even want to come to our house to give us an estimate but rather gave one over the phone! That would have never worked in our case. Walt and his staff are true gems and deserve to be "rock stars" in the radon mitigation world. If you are wondering whether or not you should spend the money for radon abatement, keep in mind that according to many reliable sources including the Environmental Protection Agency, http://www.epa.gov/radon/healthrisks.html, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and the primary cause among non-smokers, I plan on giving radon home testing kits for Christmas gifts. An odd present perhaps, but an inexpensive way to help keep your loved one's healthy.
