Overall the work went well. Walt did a great job explaining how the system would work, the installation was smooth, on budget, and on time, and the preliminary Radon reading showed a noticible reduction.

Yes I had Radon service done from Advance Radon. The owner of the company was awesome. Maybe 4-5 months ago the service was done about a week withing the time I looked him up on your on your thing. He installed the Radon Littergations System. His professionalism, his honesty he's a total down to earth guy, he is absolutely great. And I would recommend him to anybody. Tons of my neighbors have used him I thought he was great.

After extensive research via Angie's List we decided to contact Advanced Radon Services in regard to the radon problem in our home. We emailed the company expressing interest and promptly heard back from them the very same day. Mr. Walt Fitzmaurice gave us three available dates and we were able to set up in in-home estimate a short three days later. Walt gave us a courtesy call and arrived promptly at the agreed upon time. For the next hour, he did a thorough and complete inspection of all areas of the basement and gave us a thorough explanation of how radon can get into a home and the best ways to go about reducing it. He has an excellent knowledge of the subject matter and was very informative. After he left, he emailed us a bid and we decided that this was the right company to complete the job. We were able to schedule the construction three weeks later. Walt gave us another courtesy call the day before arriving. Extremely professional and very much appreciated. The day of the service Mike, Tony and Walt arrived promptly on-time and put down some tarps to protect the carpet. They then drilled a couple of holes in the concrete slab to perform a field extension test to determine if the system to be installed would get the job done. Unfortunately, due to the extreme density of the soil beneath the home, this test did not pass, meaning typical mitigation would not get the job done of removing/reducing enough radon from our home. It was not good news, as we were looking forward to not only getting rid of the radon, but working with this company as they are both professional and outstanding on all levels. Walt explained the unfortunate news, and suggested we try another short term radon test to check levels in the basement and if still over acceptable levels, to contact an HVAC installer and have an air to air exchanger installed in the home. Walt emailed us some further information on air exchangers as well as some contact information. Although unable to install a mitigation system, Advanced Radon Services excelled on all levels. From initial contact, through free no obligation inspection, to the day of the scheduled service, all involved were extremely professional, prompt, courteous and a pleasure to work with. All in all from the in-house consult through the day of service Walt spent approximately three hours in our home not to mention the travel time from the southern to northern suburbs...ALL AT NO CHARGE. It is refreshing in this day and age to find a company with this level of professionalism and integrity. Although unable to fix the problem (through no fault of their own) we absolutely HIGHLY RECOMMEND them should you need radon mitigation services. We will take the next step and check into an air exchanger, but greatly appreciated the expertise of Walt and the team at Advanced Radon Services.

Called two companies to get bids for radon reduction (initially used kit from Home Depot which indicated we had higher than desirable levels of radon). First company said they'd provide an estimate, and after 3 calls, said they didn't have time after all. Advanced Radon was much more professional. Walter provided bid right away, and we set up the installation. Walter's a bit of a radon-reduction geek, which was a good thing as he really seems to know what he's doing. He walked through in detail what they would do, walking around the perimeter of the basement to tell me how they'd seal each area and direct the radon to the removal tube. Unlike a neighbor's house where they simply put a 4" tube through an external wall and over the side and soffits, Advanced Radon was able to go through the joists to the garage, then vent it through the roof, so we have no external pipe showing. They completed the job in a day, and cleaned up better than they found it. Lastly, they provided another radon test kit so we could check it again to ensure it was working. Result was a reduction from 6.5 to <0.5 pcl, so we now don't have to worry about breathing in radon when we're downstairs. To reduce radon, we'd highly recommend Advanced Radon Svc, as they're experts in radon only.

In the end, we did not utilize Advanced Radon Services because it didn't make sense to patch up the drain tiles and it would have been cost prohibitive. Walt did not make any money spending an hour teaching me about radon removal and air exchangers and, in the end, he recommended another company that installs air exchangers. Walt does not own that particular company nor does he get any financial reward for recommending the company to customers. With his visit, I became more knowledgeable about all my choices for Radon removal but, unfortunately, Walt did receive a penny even though I offered to pay him for his consultation. As you can see, Walt is extremely knowledgeable, honest, credible , and a true professional. Besides all that, he has a great sense of humor and we had a fun conversation about Latin America. I would strongly recommend him and his company to anyone out there thinking about ways to reduce the Radon levels in their house. This level of service and professionalism is rare these days and was wonderfully refreshing to experience again.
Description of Work: I contacted Advanced Radon Services based on recommendations from others on Angies List. Walt Fitzmaurice made an appointment with me at a time and date that was mutually beneficial to both of us. He arrived on time and we proceeded to have a conversation about Radon Reduction. Walt was extremely professional, courteous and knowledgeable about the topic and took all the time I needed to explain the pros and cons and the alternatives to the services he could provide. I never felt like he was trying to push his services on me. What I did feel is that he wanted me to be an extremely informed consumer. He inspected the basement of my house where we have a sump pump and I mentioned to him that we had French drain tiles underneath our basement. He immediately told me that, because of the French drain tiles, it would require a lot of extra work to seal off the radon that could be seeping into my house and that it would probably be cost prohibitive for him to do so. He then mentioned an alternative method that might work that would involve an air exchanger. He then inspected my furnace and the air ducts leading into and out of our utility room and explained, in great detail, how the air exchanger works.

Overall, Walt and his team did an outstanding job. Our house had a couple of additions, so there were a few difficult challenges Walt had to overcome. Walt was very knowledgeable and paid great attention to detail. Walt had to make several trips to our home and did not charge anything extra. If fact, I tried to pay Walt more for his services, but he declined. I have absolute confidence in recommending Walt and his company.

Walt is honest and knowledgeable- the very best kind of tradesman one could hope to encounter. He takes complex information and makes it accessible. Radon is a serious health issue- the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer. Walt was able to calm our fears and lead us to the best solution for lower the radon levels in our house. Thanks Walt.

I found Walt (the owner) and his team to be extremely detailed in their analysis of my problem and the mitigation design. Walt did a great job balancing the effectiveness of the mitigation design with the overall esthetics. He also spent a great deal of time explaining the process to me. The team arrived to do the work on time and finished a bit earlier than planned. This was a high quality installation. The finish work was excellent. And, they cleaned up after themselves (inside and out). Pre-migitation levels in my home were 6 pCi/L. The levels post mitigation are .6 pCi/L - an excellent result.
Description of Work: I contracted with this company to mitigate radon levels in my South Minneapolis home. The house was built in 1915 and has a finished basement. The company performed initial tests to determine the radon levels; completed a field pressure test to ensure that their mitigation strategy would work; and, installed the radon mitigation system. They installation team left 3 radon test kits with me so that I could test radon levels after the mitigation work was completed.

From start to finish Walt was courteous, knowledgeable, prompt and clean. I'd never know that anyone drilled a hole through our concrete slab and through the side of our house. Everything was done professionally and they cleaned up after themselves perfectly. I couldn't ask for better service, or better results. Our pre-mitigation test was 5.5 and 5.8. We just got the results from our post mitigation test and it's 0.7 and 0.9. So not only were they thorough and professional- they were successful as well! I honestly couldn't ask for better service- if there were something higher than an "A" I'd give them that. I would not hesitate to call them again, and would recommend them to anyone looking for help with radon in their home.
Description of Work: Walt came to our house and did a thorough inspection of our property inside and out. He was able to answer all of our questions and explain exactly what his recommendation for removing radon from our home would be and why. He knew about all of the parts they use, where they come from, how long they last, why they use them. He could tell us exactly how they performed all services and who would be doing the work. They performed a drain tile depressurization on our house. They drilled through our slab into the drain tile system and sealed our sump pump opening. They ran a pipe to the outside of the house with a fan to remove the radon from our home. When the work was done, Walt provided a thorough walk-through to show us what they did and how to monitor the system. From start to finish, the process was seamless and professional. I couldn't ask for anything better.

When I contacted Advanced Radon, Walt walked me through testing the unit (over the unit) to make sure the fan was still running and not a fire hazard. We scheduled a call a few days later and he replaced the system monitor gauge and advised me on retesting for radon (as I had completed remodeling since the radon remediation had been done). He provided quite a bit of helpful advice on my particular set-up. Walt was prompt, very informative and professional. As the work was minimal, he did not charge me. I would certainly contact this company for future radon work and would recommend them to others.

Walt was responsive to all my questions, prompt courteous, very professional. He did good work, very neat and clean and exactly what was promised. I liked everything about his service. The only thing I don't know about is the price because I didn't compare prices. The $1,485 was for testing and abatement. My radon measurement went from 10.9 pCi/L to 1.9 pCi/L.. I also like that he did all the work himself--no subcontractors so I know who I was dealing with.
Description of Work: Service included radon testing and abatement. The abatement was through a vent pipe system from the basement to the outside of the house.

During an initial telephone conversation and then Walt's visit to the house, we talked at great length. Finally, he said that with just a couple of days notice, he could come by to quickly "stub" a radon vent pipe into my draintile before the basement slab was poured, then the rest of the installation could follow. (My vent pipe has to run four feet under the basement slab, from the draintile over to the basement wall, due to special foundation circumstances.) I told Walt the draintile would be laid within the next couple of weeks. I received a long followup email from Walt recommending a "passive" system, along with an estimate for $1200. I called Walt on Feb. 13th, approximately three weeks later, telling him that we were going ahead with the rest of the foundation and basement, and giving him a 7-10 day window to come by to stub in the pipe. He got back to me two days later with an email stating he was "booked solid till mid-March". I emailed him back, stating that the pipe needed to be placed into the draintile within about one week (before the basement slab was poured), but the rest of the job could wait until early to mid-March. He emailed me back, now stating that "the PVC vent pipe and drain tile tie-in are really quite simple. Any plumber and concrete workers should know how to do this" (neither my plumbers nor concrete workers had any knowledge of how to do this). Both I and my general contractor contacted Walt again by email and telephone. He now sent me an email stating that he was "just trying to save me money" (by suggesting that I get someone else to do the work!). By backing out of his verbal agreement to come by within a couple of days to place my vent pipe, Walt forced me to find another radon contractor at the last minute. If I had waited, I would have been left with a vent pipe sticking up in the middle of my basement floor and running four feet across the floor over to the basement wall. In these February emails, I also asked Walt roughly how much a passive system would reduce radon levels, as I was pondering whether or not to get a fan installed. In his email reply, Walt stated that "passive radon systems generally do very little to reduce radon" (this was the system he was recommending!). Overall, Walt offered me a lot of information, but because he contradicted himself, I found him confusing. I also did not appreciate his unwillingness to come by my house to set up the vent pipe under the basement slab as he had told me he would. As above, this forced me to have to find another contractor at the last minute.
Description of Work: Walt was recommended by my contractor to install a radon mitigation system as part of a complete redo of my 1911 home. At the time Walt came to the house, looked at the plans, and gave me an estimate, the basement slab was gone and we were standing on dirt surrounded by the new foundation walls. He did follow up with a written $1200 estimate for the work.

Response from ADVANCED RADON SERVICES
Hopefully our record of excellent customer service is not overshadowed by the extremely low percentage of people who lodge these kinds of negative comments. We have installed nearly 1000 systems over the years, and in doing so have fielded several thousand inquires -- providing free advice, no obligation in-home consultations and even free test kits. The number of complaints we have had sums to less than one half of one tenth of one percent! And we have not received even one complaint -- zero -- from a customer who actually contracted our services Most customer comments praise us for good communications. Perhaps the reason you perceived me as "scattered" is because your request was quite out of the ordinary: We usually get calls from people who have elevated radon levels. You failed to mention in your complaint the very pertinent detail that your radon level is 2 pCi/L. We're not in the business of mitigating homes that don't need it, and we, unlike a lot of our competitors, practice an ethical responsibility to ensure we are delivering real and quantifiable radon risk reduction. I also base my recommendations on what is the most cost-effective approach for a customer. In your situation, I recommended initially and continue to recommend a "passive" system, which is basically a stubbed up pipe routing through your home -- installed while it's feasible (under total re-construction). As I detailed to you, the plumber on the project can simply stub up the pipe so a radon fan can be added later, if elevated levels are found. Passive systems are installed on virtually every new Minnesota home since 2008, and the plumbing trades have taken over this business. You sat on these recommendations for a month, saying you'd "muse it over, " providing only a general time frame for when you might want to the work completed. Several weeks passed. Then out of the blue you told us to schedule us to do the installation instead of having the plumber do it for much less. You requested we schedule the installation "later this week, over the weekend, or early next." Sorry, but we are booked up the dates you requested, and I simply can't drop other customers who booked specific dates in advance. The character assassination stuff is really inappropriate, unfair and untrue. We have a positive reputation for being forthright and upfront about everything we do. I have charged you nothing for the time and effort I spent giving you sound advice, further advising how you can have the plumbing portion done for a fraction of the cost. What is the" game" in that? Let me take this opportunity to thank our actual customers over the years, 100% of whom have been happy with our "game."

Walt spent over 2 hours with us when he 1st looked at the job. He was very through, even though he did not know if he would get the job. Walt and his helper Mike did an excellent install. Mike did most of the install, but Walt oversaw the project and was there as much as he could be. They were going to have to remove some permanent shelving and replace it. I decided to do that, so he reduced the price. I also took care of the electrical work, as that would have been an additional expense. I wish all contractors were as good to work with as Walt. He is the best!!!
Description of Work: I have my own digital radon detector, so had taken many readings and knew we had a radon problem. We also sleep in the basement and have our family room down there, so we spend 8-12 hours per day in the lower level. The readings were 5-9 pCiL before mitigation and 0.9 after mitigation. Other areas of the basement were in the 300 pCiL range, especially in the sump pump area.. We had 4 radon mitigation companies come out and give us estimates. Walt was by far the most thorough, and concerned about making sure he installed the best system for our situation. He was the only one who was going to install a condensation drain pipe right as the pipe exits the house to dispose of the condensation that can occur as the pipe enters the cold garage. It turns out that he could do both the radon mitigation as well as take care of the condensation with the same pipe. He reduced the cost of the job by $100.00 as a result of that. He also tore out the already installed pipes and rerouted them to make for a better looking installation. What a guy, that impressed me. I had read on a web-site about the fact that most installers install a fan that maximizes the amount of radon it removes from the house, but It also costs the home owner a lot more in energy costs. As part of the install Walt agreed to install the fan he recommended for two weeks while I took wattage draw readings. After two weeks he installed the lower wattage fan, and I took more readings. The lower wattage fan will save me about $50.00 per year in energy costs and the radon readings would have been.6 with the higher wattage fan vs. 0.9 with the lower wattage fan. That is more than $1000.00 savings over 20 years. Energy costs will continue to rise. It is also a green thing.

I began conversations with Walt Fitzmaurice at Advanced Radon several years ago, they have always been a wealth of information. However, my radon levels were below the level that you might decide to do something (according to the EPA). However, in Winter of '10/'11 after completing some air sealing and insuation work I re-tested as I have been doing roughly yearly and found levels were much higher. So, naturally I called Walt again, he suggested two ideas (sub surface and air exchange), plus spent considerable time trying to determine the best way to route the discharge pipe on a very challenging site. I chose sub surface and when Walt and his team came to do intial tests they determined that my 100year old basement slab was far to porous and the sub-surface materials to dense to allow the simpler sub-surface system with a 2 or 3 points of suction to work properly. So, we were going to have to trench around the inside of the walls and put in collection tubing, etc. At that point if we were going to go that far we decided (along with other reasons) to just replace the 100 year old cracked and un-level floor (and install infloor radiant while we were at it). With that done we are now going to re-test to see if the new monolithic floor, better sealing, and perimeter tubing vented directly solve the issue passively (somehow), all along the way I've gotten advice from Walt but have not had the work content to execute a contract, and Walt has not asked for compensation for his considerable consulting. I believe I'll ultimately need to have Walt and his team install a system but I'm taking a wait and see approach. This post is just to state to any others that I fully recommend Walt Fitzmaurice (Advanced Radon) and his thoughful approach to solving your issue.

I have had various rating levels of radon in my house since I moved in (2005) ranging from above 4.0 to about 6.0. For years I had wanted to have someone come in and do radon mitigation but I kept putting it off. This winter/spring I had about 3-4 companies come and give me estimates for this work. I was however, highly impressed with Walt's company because he is so knowledgeable about radon and the mitigation system. He believes in it. He answered all of my many many questions in person, over email and the phone. He was highly respectful and reliable. In addition, I appreciate their warranty program. Even though his estimate was the highest as compared to the other bids, I felt assured that he would do a great job! I think of Walt as THE "guru" of radon mitigation - which is a good thing. So, we first needed to schedule a pressure field extension test (about an hour), which was a test to see whether a radon mitigation system would work in my house. My house passed. :) Also on this day, he held the fan up to the wall of the first floor (outside) to see if I could hear it inside - which I did not. He wanted to make sure that the fan noise (which was nothing) would bother me. This was considerate. Then, we scheduled the radon mitigation. It took most of the day to install. Mike and Walt did a fabulous job. Electrical for the fan was taken care of by an outside company but arranged by Walt and included in my bid as well as a permit. After they were finished installing the system, Walk talked with me about it in thorough detail answering all questions and explaining everything to me which I really appreciated. They cleaned up my basement and about a day or so later, Mike came out to do one last thing that he needed to do - this was appreciated on my part. It shows how hardworking and responsible this company is. They did an excellent job!!! I would highly recommend this company to all.

We performed mutiple radon tests, all of which came back above EPA recommended levels, which prompted us to seek radon mitigation help. I called and spoke to Walt at Advanced Radon Services, and he came out a couple of days later to have a look. Walt was on time for the estimate/consultation, extremely friendly and knowledgable, and just gave us the "facts". Never tried to "sell" us on anything. The following day, Walt emailed an estimate as he said he would, and answered all of the questions I had regarding the estimate very promptly. We considered getting a couple of other estimates, but felt so comfortable with and confident in Walt, that we decided to move forward with him. Walt and his crew (1 other guy who was also very friendly and knowledgable) showed up for our appt 10 min late. I only mention this because it has been my experience that most contractors would consider 10 min late to be on time. Walt gave us the courtesy of calling ahead of time to let us know they'd be running a little late. Upon arrival, Walt walked me through the mitigation procedure again to make sure we both were completely on the same page as to the work they were going to perform that day. He gave an estimate as to when he expected they would be finished, and they ended up finishing ahead of schedule. After completion, Walt thoroughly walked me through everything they had done, and made sure I didn't have any other questions. I'm no expert, but I could tell the work they did was 100% professional. Also, throughout the course of their work, other non-radon related "home maintenance" items were noticed, and Walt took the time to make note of these, and pointed them out to me so that I could take care of them. We haven't even completed our follow-up testing to make sure the system in place works, but I felt compelled to provide this review just based on the experience we had with Advanced Radon Services/Walt.

The main owner, Walter Fitzmaurice, was very conscientious and very informed. He was very flexible. He is really the guy to work with. I was completely satisfied with them. They did the job that they said they were going to do and our radon levels are down. I will certainly not hesitate to recommend him.
Description of Work: We had Advanced Radon Services put in a radon mitigating system for our basement in October. I have used them from since then.
