Mike Kemna (of M-K construction) and Brian Kelley did a substantial remodel of a house my mother bought. The 1400 sq ft house was in pretty drab, original-ish 1950's condition. Many different parts of the above were handled by subs. Both the subs and Brian did very nice work...I would qualify it as meticulous. Generally, I don't just want someone that can do the work, I want someone I can trust. I would say that Brian and Mike, in addition to being plenty capable, are trustworthy. I would note I also felt that way about the subs used on the job...just as important. These are normal, nice guys that have lived in the MPLS community and make their living doing this kind of work. The one beef I had, which left me a little raw at the time, was that the amount of time to complete was substantially longer than outlined/agreed to, even as we asked if everything was on track timewise -- several of the items above were added to the original contract, but nothing that should have extended the project as far past original end date as it did. Some of that's on me for not requesting penalty/timing clauses in the contract of work. Suffice it to say, despite some minor issues I had, I would hire either Brian or Mike (M-K Construction) again without a second thought. The work is well above average, they (as well as their subs) are good, honest guys to work with and we were pleased with the end work product.
Description of Work: Full kitchen remodel (including custom cabinet construction) Full bath remodel Addition of half bath--making third bedroom into half bath/laundry room Addition of several hundred feet of hardwood flooring and refinishing of all hardwood flooring Full interior/exterior painting Upgraded electric service and some rewiring Miscellaneous other items

Great experience. Mike was realistic and upfront about pricing, did the work on time and even made suggestions on how to further improve the room and we worked out arrangements where I did some of the demo and cleanup to save money. High recommended for any project.
Description of Work: I had removed a hot tub from my floor and needed new flooring put in as well as new ceder siding to cover where the hot tub was. Mike installed a new floor, worked around and used the existing heating duct work, and installed two new outlets in half-height ceder siding.

We met with Mike Kemna (M-K Remodeling) and Brian Kelley (Kelley Remodeling) and it was obvious that they had experience with how to incorporate a small bathroom into a small space tucked underneath the stairs. We did not have much room to work. The initial plan discussions were about how to best and economically build this bathroom within the constraints of space and how it would work with the traffic flow of the laundry area with an eye also to aesthetics. Mike and Brian seemed to relish in the problem-solving aspects of this job as they spent the time to think and visualize of all the possible options before they started digging up the floor and this was I believe, the primary reason why I hired them. They also listened and understood what we wanted from the onset. Communication was easy and they always kept us abreast of the progress and when problems came up - they always were ready with possible solutions for us to make a decision. Plus, with their experience and expertise, I felt that I could trust their recommendations. It was easy to keep in touch by cell phone and e-mail. We set out on this project as a "basement" bathroom - no frills but something that was workable, easy to clean, and would hold up to frequent use. The resulting bathroom exceeded our expectations. Brian is an expert at tile work - and I would advise to defer to his judgement on tile size, texture, and color as I originally chose a floor tile that would not have been suitable for a variety of reasons. The tile he eventually chose for the floor worked out perfectly-aesthetically pleasing as well as durable. Both Mike and Brian were helpful with paint choices and were able to adjust the color of a too bright paint color choice that I had made. Quality of work overall was very good. Finishing touches and carpentry was good. They had to box around pipes for the ceiling and work out angles for some of the walls to accommodate the steps but it looks cohesive and clean. The lights work, faucets and drains run and drain well. Work area was clean and they always made sure I had use of the laundry area during the weekends. They covered and sealed other rooms off so that construction dust was localized. When finished, they left the basement clean and ready to use. The bathroom is now well in operation and we have been very pleased. Thanks Brian and Mike!

They also do small repair jobs as well. I thought they were great; the main guy was very knowledgeable and was incredibly friendly and thorough. After he finished the basement he put everything away for me including re-hanging all my tools; which I did not expect. I had estimates from a number of people and they were the best. I will use them again in the future.

As a contractor, the customer was very organized prior to the project starting and make firm choices for me to install as the project progressed. I don't think homeowners know what makes a project flow smoothly from a contractors point of view. I look forward to working for the customer again. they are great clients!

After we decided to do the remodeling, we contacted a few people to come and get some estimates. Mike was the last person who came for the estimate, so we already had some experience talking through the project with a couple of other people. Mike was clearly different in his approach. He was thoughtful, listened to our ideas, and had an easy-going, yet professional, demeanor. He really gave me the impression that he was more than qualified to do the work and wouldn't get stressed about any unforeseen events. I'm happy to say that all of this proved to be true. Here's one example of how he used the design and estimate time. We were looking at the rough in for the bathroom. It was set up to be a 3/4, but we were looking for a full bath. The location, near the furnace, and existing pipework, created a couple of problems getting the expanded space. I had been thinking about moving the sink out to location X accommodate a larger tub. Mike listened to this idea, discussed how it would look and work, and then asked if we had thought about moving the sink to location Y, instead of location X, because it would increase the utility of the space, allow for a double sink, and not impact the bedroom. He was clear that it was our choice how we wanted to do it, he was just providing additional options for us to consider. Fortunately, he was able to offer alternatives in several other areas that gave us choices instead of being forced to think about the project a certain way. In the end, we got a significantly better finished space than we would have if we had gone with our original plan When the work started, it really progressed rapidly. Just over four weeks after he got started, our daughter was sleeping in her new bedroom. I think it went quickly because Mike did a great job scheduling the project so everyday something new as accomplished. I know he also had other projects going on, but we saw so much progress that it felt like we were his only client. One side note, Mike obviously takes great care in selecting his subs. Everyone that came to our house was professional, respectful, and artful. When a new sub started, Mike would meet with them to explain in detail what he was looking for. When their part of the project was done, he made sure their work met his standards. I really liked the fact that no work needed to be redone. He had selected carefully in the beginning, so the work wasn't delayed. It was also very easy to make finishing selections. Paint, counter, and carpet samples were brought to the house, so that we could look at them and decide what we wanted. There were enough samples so that we had to make some decisions, but not so many that we were overwhelmed by them. We had to go to a store to pick out the tile, but once we did, we just said "it's for MK Remodeling" and we were done. A couple things happened at the end of the project that I thought were noteworthy. First, the quality of work was exceptional and exceeded my expectations. The space has been a joy to be in. The second thing I was impressed with was the clean-up. The space was vacuumed, dusted, and wiped down. I wish my daughter kept it as clean as Mike left it. Third, there was just one extra touch that I really think speaks to Mike's professionalism. We had asked him to add an electrical panel cover to match the cabinetry in another part of the basement. The previous owners had a dart board on the same wall as the electrical panel. When Mike was installing the cover, he noticed all the dart holes in the wall. Mike repaired them. Finally, Mike was right on with the estimate. There were no surprises and no additions. He said he would give us a great space for a certain price, and he did. I not only recommend MK Remodeling, I'll be a repeat client.
Description of Work: We were looking to add a bedroom and bathroom to our basement. The external walls were already insulated and sheetrocked and the bathroom was roughed in, but no other work had been done. Mike came to our house, listened to what we wanted, asked question to clarify our vision, and helped us think through a couple of challenges related to our roughed in bathroom. We wanted to have a full bath but the rough-in was for a three-quarter. We were also looking for a bedroom and walk-in closet. The bedroom and bathroom were connected by a short hallway that also opened out into the rest of the basement. This work also included the associated finishing.

Mike scheduled his drywall guy (Greg Nelson) to do the work in our upper bathroom. Greg did a good job, but I think the price was a little high for the relatively simple job that needed to be done. Also, there were a couple of minor negatives that I want to mention. One was, after Greg got done with the job, he essentially walked out of the house and said goodbye without asking me to inspect the finished job. The other negative is, he asked if I had a shopvac that he coujld use to clean up the drywall dust. What would he have done if I said NO? I don't know if he has his own shopvac or not, but it seems to me that construction workers should have their own tools, and should not need to borrow tools from the homeowner. Later, I had to clean out the drywall dust from my shopvac. If you've never cleaned drywall dust out of a shopvac, then you cannot understand how messy the job can be! So, overall, my experience with MK Remodling was somewhat mixed. If I needed similar work done in the future, I would not call him back, and the biggest reason is his prices are a lot higher than other contractors and handymen that I've contacted for the few jobs that I needed to get done.
Description of Work: My wife and I had some major remodling done to our house about 2 years ago, but there were a few small jobs and one big job that we kept putting off for various reasons. So, we recently decided to get those jobs done so that our house didn't look unfinished. The major job is to install jamb extentions and casing (trim) on all windows and one patio door (a total of 16). The small jobs are to repair the drywall in our upper bathroom, and to install flooring in the bathroom and in the front entryway. The owner of MK Remodling (if I recall, his name was Mike) told me that he was very busy, and it would be a couple of months before his crew would be able to do the work on the windows. I asked him to quote the job anyways just in case I was not able to get someone else, or if other quotes were too high. Well, after a few days, Mike called me and gave me verbal quotes over the phone. When he gave me the cost to install the jamb extensions, I nearly fell off my chair! It was more than twice as much as another contracter quoted me about a year ago. Mike quoted $5,600.00 for material and labor. I ended up going with the contractor who I originally contacted last year. His quote was $2,456.00. Mike also quoted costs to repair the drywall in our bathroom, and to install linoleum in the bathroom and the front entryway. He quoted $400.00 for the drywall repair, and $400.00 for each flooring installation. The quote for the flooring is for labor only. Since the floor in each area is quite small, and basically a rectangle, I felt that $400.00 for labor on each floor was too high, so I told him to forget the flooring, but to go ahead and do the drywall. I installed the flooring myself in the bathroom and it took only a couple of hours. A professional could have done it it half the time. I proved to myself that his quote of $400.00 was much too high for such a simple job.

Wasn't able to compare competitors bid. I'm suspicious of bids that are less than half. If all things are equal, the differential should be minimal. Hope the job turned out with professional results by the other contractor.

His name is Mike Kemna. The experience was very good. He communicated very well and tried very hard to get the job done to my standards. If there was a problem he went back and fixed it. He was very reasonable. He remodeled my office in a very short period of time and he adjusted his schedule to meet my deadline. I bid the job out to four other companies and the closest competitor was twice as much. I had to go back and tell him to redo several of the problems with the paint job because several things were not completely finished perfect and I had to point out errors and have him come and fix things. He was very responsive and tried really hard. I would use him again.

I called MK Remodeling with a tight timeline as I needed to get my house on the market ready for summer showings ASAP. I wasn't expecting to find someone who was able to do the work immediately, but the owner at MK, while busy, called in an additional employee who was able to do the job immediately. I was thrilled, and the price estimate was much lower than expected. My realtor agreed it was a good deal. The work was done promptly and the guys at MK Remodeling were very courteous, professional, helpful and responsive to my questions and requests. Since I didn't want to replace the carpet as it was the same in both rooms being merged into one room, MK recommended a professional carpet repairman to fill the gaps the removed walls left. They said they could do an OK job but it being in the middle of the room I'd probably want something undetectable. I appreciated their honesty in recommending an additional person be brought in to reach top results. The only downside to the experience was a small piece of baseboard trim that was patched where the wall was removed, which didn't mesh seamlessly with the rest of the baseboard. However, I didn't call it to their attention as I was so happy with everything else and the efficiency of their work that it didn't seem worth it. I'm sure they would have responded had I asked them to fix it as they did do more sanding and added an additional coat of paint to the merged built in shelves when I asked them to. As an additional note, I was not present for the work, but my realtor stopped by and commented what a nice job they did keeping the dust out of the rest of the house and keeping everything clean. They also kept the refuse in the garage until the last day of construction so there wouldn't have to be an unsightly dumpster in the driveway while our house was on the market. I thought that was very thoughtful of them. The final project area was thoroughly clean when they were done and nothing in the house required any cleaning by me.
Description of Work: They removed 2 walls to open up basement for large rec room. Moved light switches and outlets, added cutout in load bearing wall to open space further. Matched soffits and built in shelves between the former 2 rooms. Removed wall paper border and repainted entire space and ceiling.

Mike was a fantastic contractor. He was responsive, coridial, meticulous, organized, and clean. As this was a remodel, unexpected issues did arrise, as one should expect; Mike handled these issues in a professional, calm manner. We simply discussed the problem and came up with a solution together. It was such a breath of fresh air working with Mike after having such terrible experiences with other contractors. His attention to detail shined through in the final results. Perhaps the most important aspect of Mike's approach is that he listens and communicates; it was so nice to actually work with a contractor that touched base, even if just a simple voicemail to say all went well, on a daily basis. This reliability made me very happy. Ultimately, I feel the best way to recommend Mike is this... I look forward to working with him again.
Description of Work: Mike finished off a portion of our basement into a bathroom including: double vanity sink, cultered marble countertops, 6ft tub/shower, tile floor, tile shower surround, glass block window, bathroom fan, new door, new wall, re-routed plumbing drainage at least 12 feet, etc.

Mike and Brian did an an absolutely wonderful job, and they were easy to work with from start to finish. All aspects of the job, including multiple change orders that we requested, were estimated in advance, and the estimate was accurate to the penny. This started out as a simple bedroom addition, but we decided to make it much more. Mike and Brian were willing to worth with us every step of the way, and they helped us make very good, cost-effective choices. While they were happy to accept our change orders and offer options for improvements, they were never pushy in the least. And I always felt they had our interests at heart. They also cleaned up after themselves every evening and minimized the amount of dust, etc. left from their work (not easy, given that they had to cut concrete in the middle of winter to add an egress window). Excellent, excellent work. The new bedroom and its surroundings are just beautiful. The only downside is that the adjacent bathroom now looks plain by comparison. When we get around to remodeling that, Mike and Brian will be our first call.
Description of Work: Mike and another AL service-provider, Brian Kelley Remodeling (with whom Mike frequently works), added a new bedroom in our existing finished basement. This involved installing a new sheetrock wall, cutting in a closet, and installing an egress window. They also installed a beautiful custom cabinet, custom French doors on the bedroom, and new doors on a couple of other rooms nearby. While they were at it, they raised the ceiling and installed some nice architectural features in order to accommodate existing ductwork. They carpeted the new closet. And they replaced some sheetrock around the basement that had been damaged by moisture.

The job was mostly a room addition, and so M-K Remodeling and Handyman was my contact. He subcontracted the electrical, plumbing, and furnace out. The short story is that Mike Kemna did a fine job and will gladly work with him again. I was also pleased with the subcontractors' work, although some of their decisions left me - as the finish carpenter - with some unpleasant problems to solve. We met once for a walk-through and again to go over an itemized bid. The turnaround time on this was quite fast - about 12 days - considering that he also had to coordinate the electrical, plumbing, and carpeting bids. He began work when he said he would and let me know ahead of time when there would be interruptions. The most common failure of projects is communication, and Mike kept me informed of his progress, the decisions that I would have to make and their due dates, and when I would have to complete my painting task to keep him on schedule. The only miscommunication we had was with the plumbing subcontractor over the demolition of the ceiling for the PEX run, and we ironed it out satisfactorily. Mike was very patient with me as I changed my mind 3 times about a closet location, but let me know when my decision had to be finalized without incurring extra charges. The project was completed on time, and Mike even squeezed in an extra kitchen flooring job into the schedule. When the project was begun, I asked Mike to price some items out as options, and they were implemented as I'd desired. The PEX plumbing run was done on a time-and-materials basis, and I thought it was charged fairly. At the end of the project, I got an itemized billing of the original budget along with the changes to the plan and how much money each change added or saved from the final bill. This was very welcome, and illustrates the level of communication we maintained. All our potential renters have remarked what a nice suite we have downstairs. Most say they want that suite for themselves and leave the upstairs bedrooms for the kids.
Description of Work: This was a foreclosed 1950's rambler to be remodeled for renting. Galvanized plumbing to the kitchen was replaced with PEX. A new dishwasher was roughed in and plumbed. Old 60-amp service was torn out and replaced with 150-amp service. New GFCIs and other specialized outlets were added to the kitchen and dining area for microwaves, coffee makers, etc. Downstairs, a new legal bedroom was added and an adjoining 3/4 bath to make a suite. This meant framing, insulation, sheetrock walls and ceiling, boarding up an unused window, carpeting, and ceramic tile. It also required all new electricals for lights and receptacles. There was no plumbing for the bath, so a 6' trench was dug to join to an existing line, then the sink, toilet, and shower were finished. Finally, we also needed a new furnace and water heater. I did some finish carpentry myself to enclose the new electrical panel and replace the ceiling where it had been torn out for the PEX runs.

All projects completed by M-K Remodeling have been high quality from start to finish. Clean-up after each day of work has been outstanding which allowed my family to continue living easily in the space during the remodeling work while in progress. Be sure to get specific quotes. I found that spontaineous add-on work and changes can be expensive (my opportunity for learning about construction).
Description of Work: M-K Remodeling has provided many different services including kitchen remodeling, dining room remodeling, family room remodeling, painting, electrical work, plumbing work.
