The project exceeded my expectations. The communication was excellent. Mike and the tradesmen (electrician, flooring, sheetrock, painter, plumber) communicated when they would arrive, what they would do and how long it would take. They were always pleasant and respectful and made every effort to move the project ahead. Mike kept the project organized and had the next step of the project ready to start when one process was finished. He arranged for the electrical inspection and permits which took place promptly. The work completed was done professionally and in a high quality fashion.. It gives us attractive additional space. I will definitely want to work with MK remodeling in the future for my home projects.
Description of Work: Basement remodel/finishing included 2 new walls, sheetrock, floors, electrical, paint,& closet with custom shelves.
Wonderful as always. We have hired Mike a number of times for the two different homes we have lived in over the past 10 years.
Description of Work: We moved in to a new home that had been a model. So there were a number of things we wanted done - new closet shelving, remove a wane rack and install book shelves, add to the backslash etc. but my favorite was a custom spice rack for the back of our pantry door.

Mike responded to my request to do touch up painting and minor drywall work. He arrived on time and provided a thorough estimate. When I mentioned that I wanted the work done asap, he rearranged his schedule to get all of the work done right away. He also went above and beyond to paint the trim, front door and change a lock. I would highly recommend Mike and I'm planning on using his services again soon.

All in all very well, Mike did the job from start to finish, he bid the job and he did the work himself, which was one of the reason why we hire him, also we like the handyman factor, not only can he do large jobs he can do small ones as well. In our lower bath Mike replaced the shower and shower head, did some sheetrock repair, and put in all new wood trim. In the main bath where most the work was done. Mike replaced the tub, toilet, faucets, tile around the tub area, and replaced the floor tile as well. He was clean and stay on task, and did all that we asked and more. I would highly recommend Mike for any remodel or handyman service.

When we sat down to sign the contract, it was I have this experience, I have that, but yet, he had someone else that did majority of the work. However, the workers were good. If they found any problem or feeling that it wasn’t right, the let us know, they didn’t move on. But the guy doing the work like we got a brand new vanity top and he used it as a work surface, so there were scratches on that. He tried to get the scratches off, but they were not out and I just said forget about it. Another thing he said when he sat down and talked to us is that when I work in your house, I am only working on your house and that was not the case. So it was like this kid, he went off for three weeks on a vacation, so practically nothing got done for three weeks. However, they were responsive as far as changed in the work.

I?ve worked with Mike Kemna before, so when my renter moved out ahead of schedule and I had some minor remodeling to do, I naturally called on him. Mike?s schedule was nearly full, but he used creativity in calling on an available subcontractor to make it all work. The work was completed in on schedule, even though the countertop was a special order (no longer current) laminate pattern from the factory. For workmanship, standards have slipped since I grew up, but it meets current expectations. For instance, the miter joint in the countertop, which was cut at the factory, didn't match by 3/32". I would have appreciated an offer from the subcontractor to have it recut at my expense. Instead, clear silicone caulk was squirted into the crack and ... it looks okay. In all, I?m satisfied with how the schedule, quality, and cost worked out and hope to work with Mike on future projects.
Description of Work: The job was to rework the kitchen a little by replacing: the exterior door to the breezeway, the lower cabinets and countertop on one side, the stove’s hood, and the flooring around the new lower cabinet layout. One side of the galley kitchen remained the same (with the exception of the hood). The other side kept the upper cabinets, faucet, basin, and plumbing. Since I was also doing wall repair and painting, that meant we had to coordinate our work and schedules.

My wife and I contacted Mike from MK remodeling to provide us with a bid for installing a brand new bathroom in the basement. When Mike got to our house, he looked at the area were we currently only had a toilet. From the get-go Mike gave us options as to where we could place the tub or shower, where we could place the vanity, etc. Now, the reason I mention this is because we also had 2 other contractors with a high rating on Angie's list give us a bid. One of the other contractors wanted to move the bathroom to another part of the basement and said he needed 2 hours to write a bid for us and that he would contact us soon. We never heard back from him. The second contractor said that the current place was too small to build the bathroom. He took some measurements and said he would contact us. We never heard from him again. After Mike gave us his bid, it was little above our budget. Mike worked with us and was able to give us 3 other options with different price points and that allowed us to choose the best option for us that met our budget. Mike met with us and we signed the contract for the work. He explained every detail in the contract, every thing that was going to be done and where the money was going for materials, etc. He also explained to us how where his bid might increase or decrease depending on what kind of prices he was able to get for the materials and that any savings he was able to get, was also savings for us. He told us the bathroom will be finished in about 4-5 weeks. When he started the work, he would let us know what his plan was for the coming week or two. He also let us know his work schedule and when he would take days off, for example he let us know which days he was going to take off for Thanksgiving holiday. Mike always kept us updated on how to work was coming along. Mike was finished on schedule and also on budget. We are very happy with the work he did and the bathroom looks beautiful and fits our needs perfectly. We would definitely work with Mike again and recommend him to everyone we know.

This provider's referral was not prepared to do the work promised. The referral showed up on the job to do a fairly small demo job $1500 before he was to do two other jobs $3300. We paid up front $750 or 1/2 of the first job before the work began. We promised the other half when the first job was completed. The referral and three other workers arrived as scheduled. The referral didn't have any contract in writing for us; they did not have demo tools as would be expected; no safety gloves; no safety glasses for the workers. The referral took the check for $750 and left to cash it. The referral left three young men with virtually no supervision, tools or safety equipment for my husband to supervise. I bought gloves and glasses for them wear. I rented tools for them to use. One of the workers actually cut our copper water line and two electrical wires while using our sawsall to demo sheet rock. Repairs by plumber and electrical estimated to be at least $340. I asked for proof of insurance prior to their arrival and they could not provide such other than a addendum to their auto insurance. We ultimately agreed on the last half of $750 less repairs estimated of $340 and we paid them. We should have declined their services right from the beginning. Lesson learned here; referrals from Angie's List providers should be vetted in their own right. Unfortunately, such still does reflect on the provider. Hope this helps others.
Description of Work: Provider was busy and gave a referral only. It is the referral that did not perform to our expectations, not this provider. However, guilt by association is assumed. We used this provider's good reviews to assume he would only refer us to like minded people. That was NOT the case.

Update: Grout on the tile work is pitting and cracked. To his credit, Mike offered to perform any re-work. I opted to hire a tile/grout specialist and have it fixed by a professional. The tile specialists pointed out many things that were performed incorrectly. I'll have the work fixed by the tile professional. This is the second major aspect of the original work performed that I am having to have re-done/fixed in less than a year. Original: Mike is a great guy. He had some nice ideas he suggested based on his previous work. He came when he said he would and the result is a much-nicer basement. Mike did uncover some very poor DIY plumbing conducted by the previous owner. While the cost jumped based on this finding, he did the right thing and ensured the new plumbing work was up to code. Again, while this cost more money, I now have a basement bathroom that is up to code. The low score on quality is primarily based on the baseboard. The cheap baseboard looks horrible and I'll be working with a friend to re-do. Other areas of detail such as paint edging, paint splatter, and rough edgegs on drywall brought down the score and are things I'm taking care of.

I have had Mike do work for me in the past. New home and we need to remodel the bathrooms. We had Mike give an estimate for the work listed above. The work did not include demolition (to reduce cost) and the tile material. We enjoy working with Mike for this flexibility and to reduce the cost for all of the work. Otherwise we may have not been able to do all 3 bathrooms. Mike was very good about working around us. He was very careful to clean up after himself and tried to reduce the dust from the construction. Throughout the construction he would give us updates as to what he was doing and what he may seen soon (ex: may need the new toilet in the next few days). Mike craftsmanship is excellent. We had Mike do 3 subway tiled bathrooms. This required a bit more time, but the result is incredible. I wish i could attach some picture, but i do not see how

The work was done promptly, efficiently, and was of high quality. I've worked with Mr. Kemna before, so we set up the job by email. He arranged access with the tenants and completed the work in less than a week. He did all the demolition and disposed of the trash. The doors are of higher quality that the damaged ones that were removed and match the finish of the rooms perfectly - another step up in quality. The soffits and fascias are cut and fit perfectly and improve the looks of the home dramatically. When the job was finished, Mike billed me by email. Mike even broke out the door materials and labor at my request.

After figuring out most window companies have a minimum amount of work done to accept a job I had Mike come in to give me a bid. I worked with Mike before and was happy with the work done. He showed up on time, was willing to work with what we had, i.e. already had a window, and gave me his estimate. Once it was scheduled he was in and out in the time that he said he would and he was right on target with his estimate. He is courteous and professional at all times.

He has been very responsive and everything he has told us has been right in line with information given to us by other contractors. His subs are knowledgeable and very respectful of my time and my family. They have not tried to up sell us on anything and looked at our replacement of our basement with nothing but safety and cost effectiveness in mind. We are waiting for the rest of quotes from our other contractors ( insurance required) but are excited to work with Mike and his crew. In response to others saying he is too busy for them- I don't get that impression from him. Yes he seems busy- which in my mind is a good thing, it means people like to hire him. I would be very weary if his schedule was completely open.

Our house was built in 1942, and the basement had never been renovated. We eradicated mold several years ago, and got rid of the well and the ancient oil tank, but the rest of it remained dingy, damp, stained from previous plumbing mishaps, and generally disgusting. We told Mike that we wanted it to be CLEAN, above all. We wanted a workout/entertainment room and a nice, working bathroom. We wanted a space that, when it comes time for us to sell the house, will not scream PROBLEM at every potential buyer. Mike and Brian Kelley worked together. They transformed the room from a dungeon into a clean, bright space, with a new vinyl tile floor, sheetrock walls, new ceiling with recessed lights, new windows and a TV mounted on the wall. Mike had great ideas about things we would never have thought about. He moved the washing machine and dryer to a more convenient place, added lights, added cabinets, moved and added outlets. He bought all of the bathroom fixtures and toilet. We were happy to have him do it because we are NOT shoppers ? and we liked the stuff he bought! Mike was also willing to do other projects along the way: two new toilets in upstairs bathrooms, a new garbage disposal, closing up holes in the foundation, adding a new outside faucet and new outside outlets, and new lighting in an upstairs bathroom. The project went smoothly from start to finish. Mike and Brian did good work. What we liked most of all were Mike?s ideas and suggestions for making our space more attractive, functional and liveable ? from more convenient placement of outlets to shiny new doorknobs that really make a difference. We love our new basement!
Description of Work: Mike remodeled a large room and a bathroom in our basement. He also made the unfurnished part of our basement, including the laundry area, nicer looking and more functional.

Be VERY careful when taking Mike's numbers to heart because I think he just does that to reel you in and then it changes ALOT....and maybe people still do it because they feel they have so much time invested.. I may as well have been my own contractor with all the work I had to do meeting with these contractors of his and explaining to them what needed to be done as I feel Mike should have done all this!
Description of Work: We were in contract with Mike over 3 weeks ago now and he said he would give us more concrete numbers once we gave the go ahead that we were going to use him for our basement finish. We told him yes to his bid of 7,000, he said he would meet his contractors at our home to get rock hard numbers and we would go from there. Well he never did meet with them, they came in with NO knowledge of what needed to be done so I had to meet with all 3 people on my own and explain what needed to be done, which I had already done with Mike. He also did not let me know he WOULDNT be meeting here with these guys until I called him and asked...We then waited and waited(3 weeks, which one of the week he was on vacation so that was fine) to get these FINAL numbers which he kept reassuring me they would be close and he always bids high so there are no suprises. After calling and saying we need the numbers and how much longer is this going to take..he said it wouldnt be much longer and the last contractor would be contracting me that day to set up appt, he did and now all 3 bids were in. Now this was a wednesday and I was told by the end of the week he would have all the numberd and would put something together for me and get it over so when my phone rang Friday I figured..finally...not the case he was pushing it off AGAIN til "early next week sometime"(labor day weekend) I told him this wouldnt work and needed the numbers before the long weekend so my husband and I could discuss while he was home. He said he would do his best to email something over. Saturday AM I did get a email from Mike saying that the numbers were "similar" but the electrical was higher due to code requirments!!Mike's bid to us was 7,000 This bid was for 9.000 WITHOUT electrical which was another 5,700. (because our meter would need to be moved up to meet code) I called all our other electricans who we got bids on our own and their bids were $1950-2200 AND that included the meter being moved which they said was not a huge deal AT ALL! I called Mike when I got this bid, and I was not happy. I told Mike it was way over and that there were many things listed we had once discussed, but had since said lets just go with this to be on the cheaper side.(had he taken ANY notes while here he wouldnt have to go home and go off memory for what we had asked for) We decided on the phone we would just skip the plumbing all together and spent another 15 minutes going over what we wanted. He said he would get back to me still over the weekened so we could discuss.(Saturday AM) On Tuesday at 2pm I still had seen no bid and no call from Mike so I called him..it rang 2 times and went to voicemail so I knew I was being ignored. No call back on Tuesday at all. Wednesday AM I got a EMAIL from Mike saying he couldnt meet our budget with the minor sheetrock and wall we needed put up(even though on the phone on Saturday AM he said this would be WAY under the 5k he originally bid us for THAT room) the other money was plumbing expences that we had already decided to skip and that he had decided to withdrawl himself from the project!! We have now waisted 4 weeks with Mike and now he decided to withdrawl himserlf because he is to coward to step up and fix his mistake and try to make us happy clients he decided to run.

Had a hard time getting a hold of Mike Kemna at first, his wife answered phone and they were out of town, left a msg and got a CB a week later. Set up a time for a bid and agreed to talk again a day or two prior to confirm time. I called him 2 days before and left a VM, and received a CB msg one day before that he had too many things bunched up was going to let me know. I called him back later in the day but got his VM again, and no further CB from him. Our appt was for 10 AM. But then he showed up at my house the next day at 6:50 AM! I was barely dressed, and none too happy. He said he'd called and left a VM on a person's phone identifying herself as someone other than myself...and he thought that was strange...why did he not check his number then I don't know. Also, he was not able to comply with the County's terms for my loan, as he wanted $ up front, and the County loan program allows for 50% paid 1/2 way through, but no up front $. I had a bunch of misc. work to be done, $25k+ - electrical, plumbing, furnace, windows, patio door, gutters, etc., and he seemed overwhelmed by it, as his bid was very low on some items, way too high on others. He also missed the County program's deadline for sending in his bid, which was very clear and in writing, so I could not have used him even if I'd wanted to.
Description of Work: Did not have work performed due to bidding issues.

Talking with Mike over the phone was very pleasant but he seemed overwhelmed with other projects and instead he quoted the installation for the doors over the phone. He never really committed to a hard number and said there was to many variables based on the condition of the old doors, framing and such. This is understandable but in my opinion very wrong. He needs to come out and meet the customer. Look over the project (no matter how routine) and invest the time in being a professional business man. After taking a couple of weeks to think things over, we decided to use MIke based on having that pleasant phone conversation. Again he said that he was very busy but that he could take one day in the next few weeks and get the doors done for use and look over the other projects we need to have done. So, we bought the doors, gave him the verbal OK and even agreed to be home at the drop of the hat if needed to accommodate his busy schedule. Well it has been 8 weeks now and we have moved on to another company. Maybe there was a personal crisis or he lost our number but everyone be aware that he seems to be a one man show that tries to do business over the phone and seems to over extended himself.
Description of Work: Called this company based on Angies List reviews and wanted estimate on installation of two service doors and wanted some ideas on other smaller projects we are looking to have done .

I originally called Mike to estimate skim-coating and painting my garage. Unfortunately, we discovered the tape and mud, from 17 years ago, needed to be removed and new tape & mud applied. Mike and his crew did it right. I also had them skimcoat some of the stair walls, in the house, where screwheads were becoming visible. They also did a wall corner repair from damage done to the stairway wall. Although I was hoping to have the garage painted, it was inevitable that we had to go this route. I was glad to have Mike & his crew's expertise on board and I now know the job was done right. I have also called Mike since this, when I was overwhelmed by a project I had taken on. He gave me some pointers that helped me get the job finished. He also recommended a plumber to me when he was unable to take on the work due to his scheduling.Mike is a honest, sincere guy and I will continue to use him for projects I cannot take on myself.
Description of Work: Remove old tape on drywall in garage. Re-tape and apply mud, making the surface paint ready.
