Well, they did the work but left a huge mess and they messed up basic State code work (scary) and wanted to charge me to fix it. When I called to complain, and the owner's wife's proceeded to lie to, insult, and scream at me before hanging up on me. Although I never raised my voice to her or cursed or anything. They did do the repair and didn't end up charging me for the part that they should have installed the first time. I should have been done with them after the duct cleaning mess. I now use Northside Heating and Cooling. So far so good with them. The are very friendly and accommodating. No one has yelled at me yet!
Description of Work: It took me a while to write this, but I believe people should know about me experience. I used Bowen's for furnace and water heater inspections, tune ups, and duct cleaning in several rental houses I own. The technician were not rude, but they were never what would call friendly either. I had never had ducts cleaned before or since, so I still do not know if the amount of grime left on the freshly painted window sills, new flooring, shelves, counters (everywhere really) is normal after duct cleaning, but I can't imagine it is. No one would do it if it creates mess like this. Luckily the house was empty of furniture, etc. or it would have been horrible. All horizontal surfaces had to be RE-SCRUBBED (this was sticky goop not just dust), although it was all brand new and clean. I did ask the tech about it but he just blew it off saying the ducts were really dirty but it couldn't be that bad because he had cleaned up before leaving. He did a quick sweep up of the floor only. This same tech was supposed to leave me papers at a house and didn't. So I called and he was supposed to drop them to the home's mailbox that night. They weren't even there two days later either so I went to the Bowen store to get them. But he was not there and I couldn't get a copy for some reason, so I had to wait until he finally got them to me over a week later. I should have called and complained about that and the mess, but I didn't. I gave them another chance and things got much worse. I had to have a chimney liner installed for about $500. When inspection time came, we failed and nearly lost an excellent tenant because of it. The technician replaced one of the parts with a single walled unit, which is not up to State code. When I called Bowen's about the problem I spoke with the owners wife. I told her the problem and what a pinch it left us in but instead of making it top priority she said no one could get there that day and she wanted to charge me the full price of the new part, although I had already paid for the first part. I refused to pay, as it was their fault, but she maintained it wasn't. She said they never touched that part and it was bad from before. The inspector and I both explained that we were looking at a brand new, not older used part. I even told her to look at her copy of the receipt because the charge for the part was no there. She loudly and rudely maintained that what was on my receipt was a different part. Anyway the whole situation escalated and this woman went for rude and loud to irrate screaming. I was not yelling, screaming, cussing or anything. I was very frustrated, but i was in control. She was yelling at me so much I had to repeatedly tell her to keep her voice down. When I expressed my dissatisfaction over how she was handling the situation, she just started yelling at me on the phone again until I interrupted to tell her how very unacceptable it is to speak to people like that, especially client and she hung up on me! I got a call back from her not long later saying a tech would be out that day to make the repair at no charge. There was no apology or no admission of their mistake with the parts. She did then try to tell me that there wouldn't have been a way for that tech to know if the was the wrong part anyway because codes vary by area. What? I hired trained "professionals" precisely because they should know, or at least be able to find out codes if they are unsure. It is a big part of their job. Anyway I asked the inspector at the next inspection if that particular code was a code for just that area, but he told me no. It is a Michigan State code for all houses in the state. So that tech, and all furnace technicians in Michigan should know this.
