Dan from Dexter Builders promptly came and gave me a written quote for an entire new roof. Since the roof is only 10 yrs old (new construction) we were surprised when we started noticing damage. Dan was the only one out of 3 estimates who explained why our roof wasn't lasting and showed us pictures of other damaged sections on our roof. The estimate was similar to another one that I received. The work was completed in 3 days from tear off to clean up. The workmen were very friendly and polite. They did not damage any of my landscaping and cleaned up really well. I noticed that they perfectly replaced our satellite dish and ice melting wires. The roof looks great. They also put some additional gutters up for us and cleaned out the existing ones as well.

This estimated 2-month project took 6 months for the majority of the work to get done to the quality that was promised and 5 additional months later the last issues were completed. We acknowledge that we were responsible for a 2-week delay when we decided not to go with their painter (we found someone else who did a great job at half the price) and for several days delay concerning the placement of the projector. We cannot speak to Dexter Builders' work as a whole, only to the work done by our specific contractor, Casey. The two main problems we faced on a regular basis were that 1) he often needed multiple reminders to do what was expected or else they would either not get done or they would get done incorrectly, and 2) he did a poor job of overseeing and inspecting the quality of the work being done. If we hadn't brought up many issues that came up, sometimes two or three times, they would not have gotten done, and even then some things never did get done. There were times we just gave up on something that had been agreed upon earlier to keep the project going. Here is a list of some of the issues we had: - They left our house unlocked twice and on a separate occasion took the lockbox with our house key in it off of our property once without our permission. - Several speaker wires were too short, but never fixed (we brought this up twice). - The wrong speaker wire was put in walls for the sub woofer, so they had to cut half a dozen holes in the wall to be able to thread the correct one through. - We asked for two blowers to be installed in the vents for better circulation, but never installed them (we brought this up three times and then just decided to have someone else do it). - A bathroom fan was never fixed ( brought up three times). - A section of drywall was installed on an angle and would have remained so if we didn’t bring that up. - The base shoe molding would have had long, thick gaps between it and the flooring. Casey wanted to fill it with caulk instead of having the work done correctly. After bringing this up with him twice, and him saying that molding doesn’t bend much even though that’s what it’s designed for, another Dexter Builder employee advised him to have it installed the right way. - A wall was constructed in the wrong location (Casey incorrectly marked where it was supposed to go). We were told they would fix the problem, but they needed a cheaper solution to their mistake than putting the wall where it was supposed to go, so we lost 4” of the depth of the counter and the cabinet drawer was chopped off by 4” to make things fit. - Heating vents were supposed to “be as close to the floor” as possible, as stated in the contract, but they are all in the ceiling. there was never any discussion about this change ahead of time. - Casey had the floor material, which they had never worked with before, installed by someone who didn’t specialize in flooring and it ended up being installed quite poorly. There were lots of raised corners and edges as well as gaps and overlaps. He insisted the floor was just fine and brought out a rep from the flooring manufacturer to prove it, but she stated that the floor was incorrectly installed. Again, he wanted to do the bare minimum to fix the problem and the process of getting agreement and the whole floor fixed correctly by a different installer took months more. - When the project was finally coming to a close, Casey did not charge us for a few things as an apology for all their mistakes and delays, but we were also charged more in areas we had not expected. Some of this got corrected in emails afterwards. Overall, we do like the eventual results of our basement. However, we feel that the hassles and delays could have been avoided if we had had a different contractor.

The whole experience went very well. We attempted to save money by hiring our own painter who was highly recommended. The scheduling between the other construction activities became an issue as well as the painter's ability to complete the job. Dexter contacted another painter for us and re-coordinated the schedule without a problem. I would not suggest going that route in the future. Although, the project schedule was extended, it was not to the fault of Dexter Builders. They did a great job ensuring everything was completed to our satisfaction. The few items we pointed out at the end of the project that were not to our liking were corrected within a few days without question or additional expense. For the project scope and projected timeline provided before the project began (a definite must), we were able to be within our budget and very close to the timeline initially given. The Dexter Builder team came up with some creative suggestions to the remodel that have been worked out wonderfully. We have received great feedback from friends and family about the quality of work and fina outcome of the project.

They were very, very professional.

Dexter Builders was hired to fix an existing deck. A quote was provide quickly and professionally. The price was higher than other bidders, but DB was selected for the job because of the quote process and their experience. The estimate was for 8 hours of time. The DB person arrived late one afternoon (as agreed) and rain forced him to quit after about 1.5 hrs. He returned the following day and was done with the job in less than 2 hours (3.5 hours total). The quality of work was acceptable but not exceptional. When asked to explain the discrepancy between the $300 estimate for 8hrs of work compared to the 3.5 actual work ($350 invoiced), DB simply that the worker was on the job 7 hours and that $50 was added for materials. I expressed my dissatisfaction with the invoiced amount given the time applied to the project and quality of work done. In response, DB offered that a lower price would be acceptable to address my concerns. While a good gesture, the reduction in price didn't change the fact that they charged a premium price until I challenged them on it. In my view, it is even more important that they thought that it was acceptable to charge what I believe to be an unfair amount for a small simple job. I won't hire them again because I don't want to have the same conversation when there are more zeroes in the invoice.

Their estimate was high. I did not like the fact that their quote process was separated. They gave me the cost of the cabinets and the cost of the labor in a separate category. They were very professional and cordial.

It was great - it went as good as any remodeling project could go. Dexter provided an accurate quote and an accurate timeline. They helped with the design to make sure we were doing things that would fit the space and be in a budget range we could afford. They directed us to their suppliers for plumbing fixtures and tile. The contact people at both their suppliers were excellent in helping us make good decisions. They also spoke highly of Dexter Builders and their people. We had plumbing, tiling, painting, new toilets, tub, and a brand new glass wall shower created in the Master bath (which required building a new wet wall). They custom built two vanities that were beautiful and unique. Both bathroom mirrors were also custom made with frames to match the vanities. The guys who did the bathroom tiling (floors and shower stalls) were absolute artists. The painter was a master in helping us pick paint colors that really worked. The people were great - professional and very personable. Tony, Rachel, Paul, Jason, Ben, David, Mark, (and I probably forgot someone) and their crews were a lot of fun to work with. A month's worth of people traipsing in and out of the house is not the most fun, but it sure makes a difference when you are working with such nice people who really know what they are doing. They worked closely with us every step of the way to make sure things were getting done exactly as we wanted. They cleaned up at the end of each day and took great pains to minimize dust and dirt. All of their work was of very high quality and the bathrooms turned out spectacularly - just as we envisioned. We will be using them for all future remodeling projects and I recommend them without any reservations.

We picked Dexter Builders on the basis of price (in the same ballpark as other quotes we got) and design (Jeff's design made the best use of the space and addressed what we said we wanted.) Working with Vince and Jeff has been great. Vince stays in contact nearly daily to keep us apprised of progress and to keep us on task with decisions we need to make. He has put us in contact with professionals who have helped make selecting materials much, much, easier (choices can be overwhelming!) The only cost additions have been (1) additional smoke detectors required by code and (2) improvements we decided we should include, like additional electrical outlets and insulation on an additional wall. I have very much appreciated Dexter Builders' professionalism, and the professionalism of the people they work with.

Overall I was very pleased with Dexter Builders. While a few things were not done up to my standards (mostly the drywall) they were responsive and fixed all the issues I brought up. Our toilet was chipped when it was moved and Dexter gave us a credit off our bill to purchase a new one. Their tile guy (Adrianne) is an extremely hard worker and cares a great deal about his work. The tile was the most important part to us on this project and it was completed flawlessly. We went with Dexter Builders because they said their tile guy was good but in actuality he was excellent.

Iniitial estimate was $625 for two days work, and they could start the next day. The carpenter arrived on time, 8:00, and went straight to work. He was finished by 2:00. Debris piles swept into mounds but not removed. I received an email the same day requesting payment of $625 - and could they pick it up that day? My reply email was," Thanks- I do wonder about the full charge as the original estimate was for 2 days work and he was only here for 6 hours. At $625 that is over $100 per hour." In response, they offered to take $200 off of the bill. MY response was that I would pay that amount but would not be inclined to use them again, and would post it to Angie's List. Here was there response," We charge our carpenters out at $60/hour plus we had some materials included. If the job would have taken us 3 days, we would not have come back and tried to charge you more. I sent you a proposal and you said to go ahead with the job. I apologize for any inconvenience but we did also jump right on the job the very next morning and have it completed." So- they get the check and the review. Will I use them again? I may ask them for a bid, but will certainly demand more for my money. Much more.

I would recommend them to others because they are very good at making the changes to ones home, remodeling and the installation service. They will follow up with you to make sure that you are happy with the work and that impressed me a lot. I would definitely give them repeat service if I would ever need them again.

THE COMPANY IS WELL RUN. THEY WERE VERY RESPONSIVE TO EVERYTHING WE WANTED. THE OWNER IS RESPONSIVE AND EASY TO REACH. ONE WORKER IN PARTICULAR WAS EXCELLENT AND JUST STAYED UNTIL THE JOB WAS DONE. WE WERE VERY IMPRESSED.

THEY DID A VERY GOOD JOB. MY HOUSE LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER WITH THE NEW ROOF ON. I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE WORK. I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY WORKED LIKE THEY DID. I TOLD MY FRIENDS TO USE THEIR SERVICES IF THEY EVER NEEDED THEIR ROOFS DONE.
