and quot;Had by Hadleyand quot;
We are getting our house ready for sale and needed some work done on exterior bricks that had suffered chipping (spalling) over this harsh winter. We wanted the work done quickly, so we could have the house painted in time for prime selling season. I called Hadley Home Improvement and they promptly sent a young man to look at the job. So far, so good.
They came up with a quote of $1,220 to and quot;tuck point the entire house and chimney as needed; grind and chisel out loose mortar joints and cracks; remove and replace deteriorated bricks; install new mortar to match existing.and quot; The price seemed a little high, but again, we needed the work done ASAP, which Hadley knew, and the quote made it sound like fairly detailed, time-consuming work, so I agreed to it.
Just before the workmen arrived to do the job, a very knowledgeable friend of mine came by and said I should ask them to just fill in the chipped areas instead of remove and replace the bricks. That would be a lot quicker and cheaper and just as effective, since the house was going to be painted anyway. The same young man who had looked at the job pulled up just then and I asked him if he could adjust the price downward for doing the work in the way suggested by my friend. He called Bill Hadley, who said he would knock off only $200. That seemed too small an adjustment for what would now be a much easier job, but I had agreed to have Hadley Home Improvement do the work, and they were there and ready to go, so I reluctantly said to go ahead. And to please scoop out some leaves from the gutters, while they were up there.
Two and a half hours later, including the time the young man and his assistant were gone to fetch one shingle that they said needed replacing (?), they knocked on the door and announced they were done. I was stunned that a $1,020 job had taken only half a morning. I went outside to see their work, and noticed that higher up on the chimney there were several areas that were chipped but had not been repaired. When I asked why they had not fixed those areas too, they said they didn't have a ladder tall enough to reach that high. Really??? This was the same guy who had come to look at the job a week earlier; he should have come prepared with a proper ladder for the job. Luckily, though, I happen have a very tall ladder, so they used mine. I paid them the $1,020, and remarked once again that that seemed ridiculously high for a few hours of easy work.
I noticed when they were leaving that their worn-out van did not have the Hadley logo but instead a Brick and Chimney Repair ad on the side, showing an area code different from Hadley's. A few days later I saw that same number on one of those flimsy little cardboard signs that sprout up along the roadside in early spring. I could have called one of those anonymous outfits as soon as I knew I needed brick work, but they always seem a little dodgy, advertising in that way, so I had instead called Hadley.
So here's the thing: All Bill Hadley had done was to call one of these little seasonal and quot;companiesand quot; and had them do the work. The reason it was so pricey was that he was taking a cut of it. If Bill Hadley had been a decent guy, he could have just directed me to them. Or agreed to a MUCH lower price for the repair work that was now MUCH easier than had been outlined in his quote. It was just a young guy going up a too-short ladder (not scaffolding) with a little pail of cement, slapping it on here and there. His assistant was there to hold the ladder. No skilled labor there.
The worst part? I think this easy slap-on-mortar method was all this guy had been planning to do, anyway. At one point, his van doors were open, and I never saw any bricks inside. So I doubt he had been prepared to and quot;replace deteriorated bricks,and quot; as stated in the quote. Just a hunch.
I later emailed Hadley Home Improvement to tell Bill that the workers he had sent had not been prepared with the right equipment, and had failed to rub out the repaired areas to make them look more like bricks. Two weeks on, I've still had no response. So here I am. Poorer but wiser, having been had by Hadley. Never again.
We consulted with them for their suggestions regarding what we wanted done. They gave us a start date, not too far in the future, and did start when expected. Hadley always was considerate, letting us know what days and times they would be working at our home, even trying to work quietly when I had a little one napping. They put down drop cloths on the stairs and floors each day, and at the end ot the day they cleaned up better than I expected. Their workers were all very qualified, from the carpenter/installer, to the painter, the electrican, the tile man, the general laborer/s.
There were no snags or delays. The work was very well done. The bathroom looks great. We've received many compliments on the room. I would recommend Hadley Home Improvement to anyone doing a bathroom and although that's all we had done, I will call them back for future jobs at our home, as I'm sure their good work would also apply to other rooms and projects.
