The salesman told us there were only 2 thicknesses of this type of flooring. Once the floor was delivered, we found that we could have ordered a thicker size that we would have preferred. After being assured by the salesman that they have their own installers, we put a deposit down on a hardwood floor. Afterward, we were put in contact with a subcontractor that Worldwide uses for installations. We met with the subcontractor, Intrepid Construction LLC, and discussed the intricacies of the install. We were confident that Intrepid would be able to install the floor around the curves in our staircase. This proved not to be the case. The owner of Intrepid showed up with his brother and the former owner. My husband (who had installed our previous hardwood floor) had to instruct them during the installation. The crew was careless with their tools and in unpacking the boxes of wood, causing scratches to the new floor. They stapled through the top of more than 20 boards, and left such a large gap in the boards behind my stove that I couldn't push the stove back into position. Rather than going through the boxes of flooring to vary the color/ grain and utilize the length that fit best, they just grabbed the first piece they touched, assuming we would just buy more. My husband made it clear we wouldn't be purchasing any more, and he and the owner of Intrepid scrambled to find enough good pieces to finish the job. It turned out that the salesman measured short on our moulding, and an additional piece had to be ordered. My husband installed this himself. The owner did return to fix the boards under the stove, and filled the scratches with woodfiller. He was very pleasant and did his best to correct a bad situation, but I expect more when paying for professionals.
Description of Work: Subcontracted a hardwood floor installation.
I do not recommend World of Floors due to shoddy workmanship and due to a very unpleasant encounter with the second owner. However, I should say that Mike, one of the salesmen, and George, one of the owners, were extremely helpful, assisting me with finding exactly what I wanted in my price range and were very patient with my two, young children. The installation of my wood floor was poorly done to include two very unsightly peaks running the length of the boards due to an unleveled sub-floor. I was later told the installer did his best to fix the sub-floor but was unable to. The installer should have told me this before continuing so I could have hired a carpenter to fix the problem. Both a contractor and an inspector verified a carpenter could have fixed it prior to installation. The installer also damaged the floor in numerous locations with 1 inch crushes and chips due to not positioning the nailer squarely, leaving the floor looking unsightly and worn in spots even though it was brand new. When I asked to have the problem resolved, the installer was sent back to inspect his own work. He fixed only some of the worst damage with putty and stain (but it is easy to see where these repairs were made and much damage was not fixed it certainly is not the equivalent of a new, undamaged floor). Upon my continued request to fix the floor, they sent the original salesman and a rep. from the manufacturer. After much (polite) dispute, the salesman agreed to fix the peaks but wanted an inspector to determine if they were at fault and if not at fault, I would have to pay for the inspector as well as the repairs. Under the salesman's recommendation, I hired my own independent inspector who verified World of Floors was at fault for the damage as well as for not notifying me of the sub-floor problem. I faxed them his report. While waiting for World of Floors to contact me regarding repairs, I called with an unrelated question. I was trying to determine the source of my family's 3 months of coughing. After eliminating many other possible causes both my doctor and a mold inspector suggested I make sure the new carpet had no formaldehyde in it. I explained this to the salesman at World of Floors, saying I hoped it was the carpet because then the problem would go away soon after I aired out the house. The second owner, Jim, called me back with the information I had requested. He said in a confrontational tone (this is a word for word quote) "If you were hoping to sue, you're going to have to find someone else because there is no formaldehyde in your carpet." I said, "Excuse me?" and he repeated himself. The conversation went downhill from there. He later confirmed that he knew about the wood floor issue and had been calling to also tell me about the decision regarding repairs. I told him I didn't want to know; he had upset me so much that I was finished dealing with them, and that I no longer cared if they made the repairs; it wasn't worth it.
