Steve was very professional. After I left him a message on his phone, he called me back and gave me a detailed description of his refinishing process. He came out to the house (we did not need to be home) and examined the deck. He then emailed me a detailed contract, with his square footing calculations and various options, such as leaving out the stripper, or just cleaning and power washing (we could then stain the deck on our own). With a summer coupon, the whole deck 702 sq ft was $772 for the whole thing. He also had before and after pictures available of the different stain colors. Although Restore-A-Deck, gave us a cheaper estimate, Dave seemed much more professional and gave alot more detail about his process. He does require 50% up front. I had some concerns, as we have multiple plants and bushes around the deck, lilacs, hollyhocks, daylilies, etc. We waited until the daylilies were done blooming on purpose. We had to move the furniture off of the deck (of course), and the entire process took 4 days (including a day to dry after the wash before the stain and a day to dry - because my husband and I are anal...) Even after the clean and power wash, the deck looked so much better. (It had been many years since it had been touched, completely grey and lots of mold in spots.) After the stain, it was gorgeous! He even left us the cans of stain for touch-up next summer. I asked him about using the Sikkens, as some people on the web have complained about it peeling. He replied that the problem usually happens because people try to put on more than one coat. The Sikkens is a more expensive stain and can be harder to put on because it is thicker. So far, we have not noticed any peeling, and the water just beads up. Best of all, no more paper wasps invading under the railings! We will see how it gets through the winter, but so far so good. As far as the plants, he uses a lower pressure power wash. The daylilies were hit hard, being right up against the railings, but after trimming back the injured leaves, they were growing again in a few weeks. The lilacs looked fine and the hollyhocks still bloomed big and beautiful as always. Overall we were extremely happy with Dave and our like-new deck!
Description of Work: Deck stripping and resealing as follows: - placed a bio-degradable stripper to remove the old sealer, mildew, and algae - placed a bio-degradable conditioner to restore the pH of the wood - power wash to rinse and remove as much as possible - let dry for 24 hours then sand any loose fibers from the power wash - applied Sikkens Cetol SRD for the finish seal with color of choice (we chose Teak)
