It went very well. I am completely satisfied. The initial quote from Protech was over the phone, since they are based in another city. I got a quote from them and one other company based in my area. I did significant research online and over the phone with the state of Michigan experts before seeking these quotes. Therefore, I only contacted companies I believed to be highly qualified. My experience with Protech was positive in every way after the initial contact. I wasn't sure at first that they were interested in my business since they quoted me over the phone and did nothing to try to convince me to work with them. However, soon after the call a written bid arrived. Their price was lower than the second company and their ratings on Angie's list were excellent. I visited their web site and was further impressed. They spoke highly of the second company I was considering and that seemed very classy to me. I had additional questions and the people I talked to at their company impressed me. There was no sales pressure at all and my calls were returned timely. They patiently answered every question I had. They arrived on time and did a beautiful job, The workers were pleasant, professional and experienced and the work was neat and clean. The inside and outside pipes were thoughtfully placed. My top radon score was 11 and after the installation it came in at 2. That was done within a couple of days of installation per instructions. I would use them again in a minute. In fact, the two contractors I have hired from Angie's list have both been great. I will used Angie's list in the future. It has really paid off for me.
Description of Work: I had a basic radon abatement system for a 2,475 square foot ranch home installed. My home has a full basement and two small crawl spaces created during a remodel. The crawl spaces already had plastic flooring and were heated. Nothing had to be done to them. The contractor dug a hole in the ground to draw the gas up a pipe outdoors. I did not have a sump pump.

Installer showed up as scheduled installed it and left. No issues. About 3 hours. I have had cable take longer to setup.
Description of Work: Protech installed a radon mitigation system for me. System is quiet and unobtrusive. Installation was fast and painless to me. Basically the drilled a hole in the basement floor and installed a quiet air pump that create a vacuum under the basement and extract any radon and other gases from the under the basement and puts it out side. A pvc pipe runs from the basement floor out the wall and above the windows outside. The inside portion was installed in the mechanical room of the basement and the outside portion runs up the out side wall and is hidden from the road by the chimney.

**NOTE: revised to shorten (it was crazy long) I am sorry for the length of the review. The short answer is Protech does NOT have the necessary expertise to install a radon system in a high water table environment. They seem to have no knowledge of the issue they caused, and were unwilling to make it right without more money. The technician flatly refused any responsibility in a situation clearly caused by his installation. They eventually made it right, but I had to pay them, and pay for the damage they caused. Last November, Protech installed my Radon system. This was a standard install; a radon fan (installed outside), to create a vacuum, an airtight lid over my sump pump crock to seal the vacuum, and a PVC pipe connecting them together. The idea is to create negative pressure under the basement floor which stops the radon from leaking into your basement; Simple enough. This was installed prior to moving in to the house. On moving day, I had the movers moving stuff into my basement, and the basement was flooded. It was flooded right in front of the stairs. 70% of the floor was dry. The water appeared to not be rising so I allowed the movers to put into the basement the boxes, fridge, etc. The movers had to walk through water to put stuff in the dry area. When they were done, the carpeted steps were a mess, and the stairs to the second floor were a mess. I was upset, and spent most of that day setting up a rental pump to drain the basement. The next day the water was again rising in the basement. I remembered the day before the sound of the sump pump running. In my mind this should be keeping my basement dry. I decided to break the seal of the radon cover on the crock, and see if I could figure it out. The crock was FULL of water ? I could through the clear Lexan cover. I used a knife to break big glops of silicone that sealed and attached the lid. As soon as the seal was broken, the water immediately went down in the crock. I left the knife holding up the lid to keep the seal open, and several hours later the basement had no water on the floor. I used a rented dryer to finish the process. When we finally had a chance to call Protech (we WERE moving in as I mentioned), Dave the Radon supervisor, was more than happy to help me and my wife figure out what we had done wrong to cause this problem. I was immediately angered at this insinuation, and explained that this happened before we moved in. He understood, and suggested that maybe a defective sump pump was the issue. I explained the pump was working fine, I repeated that as soon as I broke the seal on his lid the basement started to dry out. He was flabbergasted at such a phenomenon, but would Google it until he got an answer. He was not the only one searching for answers. It really is quite simple. THE PROBLEM We had a power outage prior to moving in. The water was dumping into our crock very quickly at this time, due to the large amounts of rain. By the time the power cut back on, the water in the crock had risen above the level of the tile (vacuum tube for radon fan). Tiles are drain tubes that run under your basement floor allowing the water to drain away. When the power cut back on, the radon vacuum fan and the sump pump cut back on at the same time. With the tiles covered, no air could get into the crock to relieve the vacuum. It was like trying to suck air through a straw with one end plugged; nothing happened. This must have gone on for a couple of days, burning out the sump pump a shortly thereafter. Until it died, it was doing its job. I spoke with Dave about this and my analysis not acceptable to him. He offered no alternative explanation why my basement stopped flooding when I removed his crock lid. THE RESOLUTION Dave never called back, and I eventually got hold of the owner. While admitting no wrong doing, he did seem anxious to get me to go away. We resolved we would reinstall the lid, and that I would split the cost with him (I wanted this to go away, too). The technician who showed up to reinstall (well actually his sidekick that did the original install) would not split the cost and eventually agreed to a $75 /$125 split regardless of what the owner said (What?????). I was just glad to not deal with them anymore. The good news is that the installation of the Radon fan was done well, as was the second installation of the cover, allowing for vacuum relief. I am not one to disparage my suppliers out of anger. I understand that all jobs are done by humans, and have inherent shortcomings. I also understand that as an Angie?s List member, I am obligated to inform fellow members of issues that should affect their choice of suppliers.
Description of Work: Installed Radon mitigation system over sump pump crock. Reinstalled crock cover.

I called several radon mitigation system companies. I was told different things. Different companies use different fans RP201 RP145 Fantech and other types and sizes. Some put the fan in the attic others on the outside of the house. There are two different ways either through the sump pump or drill a hole in the basement floor. The subject was so new to me and I got so confused. Kurt from Protech answered my call after I had called several others to inquire. Kurt assured me that they can go with which ever way I choose and that he will leave it open until the guys come over to check according to my house which system would be best. He did not over sell me any additional items like other companies have tried. Other companies were trying to sell me a larger fan, radon level indicator, painting pipes to match house and so forth..Non of that was necessary. I was informed if I wanted to check radon level, I could call the city and they would do the testing including lab fee for only $10. So I just went with Protech because they were clear, simple and very informative. Kurt kind of eased my concern and explained things beautifully. .Greg and Bob came over. They were very professional. Did an awesome job. The house had very old basement windows and one had a crack and broke during the installation. Protech guys were equipped with window material and fixed the window for me so that I did not have to replace it if I did not want to. Bob and Greg were very efficient and did an excellent job! They explained how to check if the system is working and what places I need to check. Right on the system there is an indicator. All is well. I have not tested the radon with the kit I was given yet. I will report again when I do. The Radon level was 8.0 before mitigation system installation.
Description of Work: Install Radon mitigation system through the sump pump. Used an RP145 fan outside the house. Sealed the sump pump and gave us a test kit to test Radon.

I bought a radon test kit at a home improvement show. The 1st test result was 6.3. PROTECH said to do another. That result was 7.1. I chose PROTECH because of Angie's List reviews and because their website was very informative and professional. The Proposal: David A. came out to give me an estimate. He looked in the attic and the garage to try to find a way to hide the fan. Because there was not enough room, the fan would have to be placed against the exterior of the house. In the process he found a dead mouse in my sump pit and that my attic fan was not working. I was very grateful to know these things.I asked David if a city (Ann Arbor) permit was required. He said no. I told him the city does require a permit. I always check with the city in advance. In fact, at the city's permit desk, the clerk referenced several prior Protech radon systems where permits had been pulled! When the proposal was received, it included $515.00 for "Permits and Inspection Fees". When asked to break this down, it was $100 for the building inspection, $40 for electrical inspection and $375 for electricians. I was told that because there would be an electrical inspection, PROTECH would have to use electricians to do the work! I had just assumed any electrical work would have been done by electricians. So, while my system was a "typical" installation, using electricians cost extra. My job included a submersible sump pump- commercial grade ($175 -optional). The Job: Two techs came out on time to do the work. There was a bit of a delay getting started as they had to come up with the best plan going through a small crawl space. In the process, they informed me that a previous contractor did not properly cap the radon vent in the crawl. The Protech techs did. The techs appeared knowledgeable and worked well together. They tried to figure a way to put the outside vent in an inconspicuous location but were unable as the pipe had to run horizontally to the outside. They were joined by the two electricians who took about 40 min to complete their work. All in all, it only took a few hours. The Result: My (independent) radon test result came back at 1.3. I am very happy.
Description of Work: Radon remediation system installed in ranch home with unfinished basement. A submersible sump pump was installed, the sump pit was covered with plexiglass and sealed. The PVC pipe was run up the basement wall and horizontally through the crawl space and up the exterior wall, including an in line fan to above the roof line.

I got an estimate for the installation of a Radon mitigation system over the phone and set up an appointment. I was told that the installers would arrive between 12 and 1 pm. They arrived at 12:13 pm and got to work right away. One person worked on the outside of the house and the other person worked in the basement. I was given a couple of installation options and was explained the difference between each. The entire installation process took about 2 hours from start to finish. The installers went over the system with me once the job was complete.

They were extremely professional. I would say that they had the correct equipment. They were prompt. The returned the phone calls promptly and then they showed up as promised. They told basically the whole house and the exterior was safe except for a small entryway and the garage door. They probably saved us about $600 to $900 in labor. We got a full report that we can use.

They offered me the option of running up outside the house or through the garage (for a reasonable extra fee). Since it didn't appear to be that large or obstrussive I opted for the outside.

I had mold growing on my laundry room ceiling - presumably from a toilet leak in the bathroom above a few months earlier. Protech came out promptly when called, gave what I thought was a reasonable estimate, scheduled the work for about a week after I agreed to the estimate. They looked after getting someone else to rebuild the ceiling after their work was done. The whole job was done in 2 days. The work appeared to be done professionally and carefully and the ceiling looks 'back to normal' now. The first company I called had a much higher estimate and wanted to rip apart my bathroom floor, which seemed unnecessary to me.

I called and was given an estimate over the fun. Workers arrived on time, worked hard and got the job done in a timely manner. They cleaned up well after themselves. The workers also reviewed the system with me once it was installed. Spend the money and get a test, don't live with radon gas in your home. Cancer is not worth the risk. Check US government and european websites, this is a real issue. The European countries suggest even a lower level of radon to be safe.
Description of Work: Radon mitigation. A pre-test and a post test were included. 2 workers arrived sealed the sump-pump hole with a thick, clear plastic and added 3 or 4 inch plastic tubbing 'chimney' that goes outside my home and to my roof line. The solution uses an outdoor fan, incorporated in the tubbing. The fan suction and piping leverages the drain tile system in my house. This constant pull of air minimizes the radon gas entering my home. My independent testing with both a charcoal filter and electronic tester showed dramatic improvement of my radon levels. Before the solution it ranged from 5 to 10. After the solution it has ranged from .6 to .9. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Lung cancer causes more deaths then any cancer I believe.

Excellent! I would highly recommend them to ANYONE.
Description of Work: During the purchase process of our home, we had a radon test done. That said, the levels were really high and we needed a mitigation system stat. Somehow (maybe from our real estate agent office) another company got our name and contact information. Needless to say, the other company was like a shady telemarketing company who pestered us consistently. They tried to even have the install done while the previous owners were still in the house. It was just all too weird and not professional. That's what prompted us to call Protech Environmental. When the guys arrived, they were very patient and professional. My husband was at work and they were kind enough to explain all the options to me. I wanted to make sure the system performed as it should, while preserving the look of our home.

II would have given this company an A for professionalism. However, one of their workers was extremely friendly and helpful, but the other was almost mean in demeanor and not helpful at hall (he slammed my front door). The worker who was unpleasant may have been grumpy because he had wanted to stand on a shelf that might not have supported his weight (he was tall), which I did not let him do, especially since there was an available chair and small step ladder which I provided to him.The worker who seemed to be having issues also tried to tell me that my systems was not working bcause it was incorrectly installed. He was unable to explain to me in simple terms what he meant was wrong. It turned out this had something to do with the type of drain trap, and he was referring to it using a term I had not heard. I tried to tell him that I had fully measured the system and shown that it did, indeed work, but he continued to be quite unpleasant. (Note that I am an expert in radon MEASUREMENTS, but not plumbing and practical aspects and terminology related radon mitigation, although I have taught some aspects of this). He was definitely hostile and slammed my front door. I hav On the other hand, the other worker was very friendly and helpful. He further investigated the situation pointed out by the first worker, and concluded things were fine. He was also willing to explain fully the situation, and even looked into the warranty on my prior fan. So, it is with mixed feelings that I have to downgrade this company.
Description of Work: Replaced a fan in my already installed radon mitigation system. This was done quickly and efficiently. The company had worked on my system before, although they did not do the original installation. They are appropriately trained in radon and appear honest in that regard. i would, however, be wary of any company that is involved in mold mitigation (check websites from the government before spending a lot of money!).

Very good service. They even had to deal with my house's 'double slab' - I wish I had an explanation of that. Reduced radon from 12.2 to 1.2 (short test). Other company I talked to didn't seem to know what to do with floor drain and the other company would only put in the weakest fan. If that didn't work, I would have had to pay more for a stronger fan. Pro-tech promised to do whatever was needed to reduce radon. If the first fan didn't work, they would keep coming back with stronger fans until the mitigation was correct.

I would recommend Jerry at Protech any time! He knows what he is doing.
Description of Work: I have had a musty odor in my basement for years. I fixed every leak and replaced old moldy (black) insulation. But, the musty odor smell continued to return. I called 3 basement companies -- one wanted to sell me a $10,000 drain tile system, the other 2 said my basement was dry. One company told me to call an environmental company -- he looked in the phone book and picked Protech. Jerry came out and did a moisture test. He said the basement was in great shape. When we looked at areas where former leaks had occurred, sure enough, water was pooling in the crawl space and was (is) the current area where the musty odor is coming from. Jerry recommended: First, fix the leaks (again) in the crawl space and make sure it doesn't leak; Second, install a heating vent on the heating pipe in the crawl space so the pipes won't freeze again next year; Third, after fixing the leaks, have the air ducts cleaned and sprayed with a product that cleans out mold, dust mites, etc; Finally, if the smell continues, remove half of the paneling from midpoint to the floor and install mold resistant dry wall. -- This is the last resort. I am glad I called Protech...they saved me thousands of dollars and unnecessary work and grief.

The job went well. They were due to arrive at 2:00 but called at noon to ask if they could get an earlier start. I asked a neighbor to let them into my home so that they could begin prior to my arrival from work. When I got home, the project was underway, my dogs were let outside (fenced yard) and they were ready to ask me about the options for running the pipe and replacing the sump pump. Very satisfied with the work performed.
Description of Work: They installed a radon remediation system in my basement. The job turned out to be a bit more complex than anticipated due to the fact that my sump pump system was set under a porch, thus they had to drill a new opening through the cement floor to run the pipe. They also installed a new sump pump as mine was shot. The job was completed in a timely manner, and the mess was cleaned up and disposed of by the Protech team. I appreciate the fact that the guys took the time to answer all my questions and explain the system fully before they left. I can sleep easier knowing that the radon in my home has been reduced to a level within safe range.
