We hired Sanctuary Garden to install a curved set of stairs on a slope in our backyard. We had informed Charles that we had $4,000 budgeted for this project. After showing him a picture of what we had wanted he said we would also need to add a sitting wall to accommodate the slope which could be up to 8 feet long and a paved 4 X 8 area ?as a worst case scenario?. He drew a picture of two curved sets of stairs (with 6 stairs each) separated by the wall and pavers. This would bring the cost up to $4,470 ?at most since the wall may well not need to be as long?. We agreed and were told the project would take two days since our fence did not allow for mechanical equipment and would be hand dug. As the second stair was going in, we were told some of the stairs would need to be deeper and if we did not pay an addition $500 for pavers to add to the depth of them (a total of approx 20 sq ft) the depth would have to be made up with grass. Since the steps would basically be ?floating in the slope? with grass in between them we had no choice but to pay the extra cost. The next day, we were told we now needed another wall on the opposite side that Charles did not foresee which would increase the cost yet again. I asked the workers how he did he not know we would need a wall there since the slope is the same on both sides and they could not understand themselves. In addition, this crazy idea Charles came up with has left the slope much steeper than it had been which is going to be difficult to get grass to grow. We also had to buy a small fence to make the "paved 4 X 8" area safe. Charles was now very upset saying the project was only scheduled to take one day. He was angry when I reminded him that he told me it would definitely take two days. The three workers were constantly moving and did not seem to take any breaks. I was then told they would stretch the material on hand making the sitting wall shorter but we would have to pay $50 for a tube of glue. Charles told the guys not to curve the second flight of stairs (to save time) without telling us. This ?fix? looks awful and incomplete. After the workers left we noticed sand was not put in between the pavers, Charles has not returned my phone calls to come back and add the sand. We had to buy an additional $200 in materials ourselves, but we are having a hard time finding someone who will take the responsibility to properly finish this job. We are now $1220 over budget (>30%) and still have more work to be done. If you need any work were elevation is involved; Charles may not be the person to go to. He did not take any slope measurements prior to starting this project and we are now stuck with the consequence of his lack of foresight. This incomplete project took 21 hours and is unbelievable that Charles is angry at us saying it should have taken 10, once again a total lack of planning.
