Repeated service calls over a number of years actually made the drip problems worse. The problem was made better once I was able to be home when the techs came. The system is a good system when it works and Gutter Helmet honors the warranty and guarantee, but if you have a problem, do not be surprised if it takes several visits to get your problem solved. The maintenance manager is a nice fellow, but persevere and be prepared to offer up pictures and a good description of what the problem really is to get it fixed.....
Description of Work: I had Gutter Helmet installed on my house almost 10 years ago. It worked great for a while, but then I started getting drips onto my front steps from a system that was supposed to eliminated drips from the gutter system under most circumstances. Since the system has a lifetime guarantee, I called and asked for help. Over the course of 3 years, they would send techs out generally 3 - 4 weeks after I called. The techs would cut a piece of gutter and place it on the portion of the gutter over my front steps. Thing is that everywhere there was a seam (two per each piece) another drip would form. I called about this repeatedly over a number of years. In 2010, I thought that it might be because I needed to heat the gutters, so I called Harry Helmet and asked them to install their Helmet Heat. That is basically a trace heat system that is temperature sensitive and heats the gutters. In theory this eliminates ice dams and keeps the ice from forming because it heats the gutters. That seemed to work for a year or two. Then the drips started again. I finally got a hold of the Installation Manager in 2014 and he sent out two techs that came while I was home. I pointed out that the seams from the various pieces that had been installed before were causing drips and that the Helmet Heat had not worked in the last snow storm. They said that they would come back and install a solid piece over the steps and told me that the heating system didn't work because of my circuit breaker. They adjusted the connection in the garage such that the green indicator light was on at the outlet and left. Two weeks later, they came back and installed a 5 foot long piece. Apparently, replacement parts are only 5 feet long. That minimized the drips, but since my steps are wider than 5 feet, I still got drips - just not in the middle of the steps more towards the sides. So that was better. But we got another snow storm a week later. Despite the attempt to fix the Helmet Heat system three weeks before, I had 3 foot long icicles all along my Gutter Helmet exactly where the heating wires were placed. I tried calling the dealer in Millersville Maryland and after 4 tries finally got to the Installation Manager who told me that he would send someone out, but that it was probably the weather that caused the icicles. The techs had been there not even 3 weeks before and had assured me that the system was working. So while I wait for the techs to fit me into their schedule, I am chipping the icicles and ice dams off my roof trying to prevent damage to my attic and eaves and trying to avoid the ice as comes off the gutters. The second round of techs came and found that the heat trace had separated from the gutter so that it didn't heat the gutter and melt the ice. They fixed it, left me a note and left. Three weeks later, we had a freeze and I noted that there still were a few icicles in isolated spots. Sadly, the weather warmed up and the icicles disappeared, otherwise I would have called Gutter Helmet back and shown them the icicles. Now I will have to wait until next year. I bought the Gutter Helmet system because it had a lifetime guarantee and looked like it would work. When I got drips, I bought the Helmet Heat system to avoid ice dams. I think both systmes would work but durign the past 4 years or so, the service I have received has exacerbated things. I got drips and now I have ice dams on my roof. I finally called their corporate office to ask whether the heating system has a history of not working when subjected to a snow storm and was told that I would have to talk to the same people who have created the drips and told me my heating system was working fine, yet I get 3 foot long icicles. I am very frustrated and greatly disappointed with Harry Helmet. The system may work but I cannot recommend Harry Helmet. It shouldn't take 4 years of repeated service visits to fix drips on a dripless gutter system and when techs tell you the heating system is working, it should work. We shall see what they do when they come out "sometime next week if schedules permit" In the meantime, I hope the ice dams do not cause damage.

I called them when I signed a contract with a roofing company. Gutter Helmet said they could remove the end pieces of the roof, but it would be at least 4 weeks out and they could not predict when. Obviously I can't hold up the new roof indefinitely. I paid the roofing company to remove and stack it according to the side of the house it came from. Gutter Helmet did not come out for three weeks, looked at it, said it would be $1045 to reinstall. I signed a contract Sept. 19 and gave a deposit. Since then, I got a card saying MAYBE the week of October 20. When I called, they said Nov. 13, maybe. I have been wanting to put my house on the market, I had it painted, new roof, but I have had the gutter helmets sitting in my yard since August 30. I think this is a problem with a company given exclusive territory. They focus on the new sales and have no reason to allocate installation resources to existing customers. They tell me that my hiring someone else would void the warranty but at this point I wonder if they do any warranty work at all. I've been waiting six weeks for work that I have to pay for; I can't imagine them even scheduling a repair that would come under the warranty. This has been a lesson for me, doing business with a company that has no competition in the area.
Description of Work: This review is for follow up work on the system. I had it installed in 2009 for about $6,000, and I have been pleased with how it works. My problem is with the reinstallation of the top part (not the gutter) after getting a new roof. I am still waiting although I signed the contract Sept. 19.

Noticed that the cinder blocks in my basement were damp, in particular two corners of the house had more dampness. After having a multitude of contractors and waterproofing companies out to figure out the problem, it appears the problem is the result of the gutter water disperser/diverter and the gutter covers not being able to handle a large deluge of water during heavy rain conditions. Since having the gutter helmets installed, I had noticed that mulch had been consistently washing away and a large hole that developed near the foundation that had to be filled with dirt because of the rain coming off the roof in the area of the water disperser/diverters. When I called Harry Helmet, it took them quite a while to come out and when they did, they quickly informed me that it wasn't their fault. However, all contractors that have looked at the issues, continue to point to my gutter system. I am now paying to take the system off the gutters!!!!

The helmets are very thin and bend or squash very easily if they get stepped on by accident which happened when we were having our roof cleaned We had to pay the big money to have them repaired. The system doesn't work Twice a year we have to have them come out to clean the gutters front and back. Pollen from the trees clogs them up and then they don't work and the rain water pours over the top of the gutter instead of going down the down spout. We have been very disappointed. The good news is they guarantee them to work so they have to come out and clean them as needed. this was not suppose to happen according to their advertisements.

The two technicans arrived on time and completed the work in just over two hours. They were polite and professional, and answered my questions. They took care not to damage shrubbery around my house. The gutter helmets blend well with the roof, and actually make the gutters look better. The installation was two days ago, and we've had no rain so I can't tell how well the helmets work. The technican left literature that stated that it might take three or four rains before the system begins to work really well, and he assured me that if there's a problem they will come back to make it right. He also advised me not to let anyone do any work on the helmets or remove them, or the warranty will be voided. I paid 1/3 of the cost as a deposit when I signed the contract, but the technican said that the balance would not be billed until there has been rain and I can verify that the system works well. Overall it was a very good experience.

Service under their warranty has always been a problem The warranty states if your gutters become clogged then they will clean them. What they don't say is how absurdly long it takes them to come out with a crew and how poorly their service is performed. I phoned today July 22, 2013, right in the middle of summer, to say that my gutters were clogged. Their service department stated that the earliest that they can come out is September 10th, 9 WEEKS FROM NOW!. In the mean time, my gutters are overflowing onto my front door, my deck, etc. 9 WEEKS! Not even close to a reasonably prompt service call. If I had to do it again, I would choose another gutter protection system. I paid a big premium to get what was sold to me as a great guarantee. Not even close to a reasonable response time. Also, the last time we called them to clean the stopped up gutters, their service personnel left a mess, and told us that we were responsible for washing our gutter helmet system! Do you think that I would have contracted for a gutter protection system that I needed to get up on a ladder to wash? We paid a premium because we were sold a system that "works and never clogs. If it does then we will come out and clean them?. Wash the gutter helmet? Ridiculous! If you call them and request a quote for installation they are reasonably prompt, but watch out on the materials and service. I recommend that you look long and hard at some other gutter protection system, other than Gutter Helmet.
Description of Work: We have been continually disappointed by the the quality of their materials and service of their warranty. The product is quite fragile and thin, and bends very easily. Putting a ladder up on the gutter often dents the gutter helmet. It should be the same thickness as a normal aluminum gutter.

I liked their product and the option of the micro screen but there was no information on that on their website. There contract was very clear and spelled out in detail the scope of the work to be provided, and their pricing was reasonable. Even though I clearly informed the person that scheduled the appointment that the homeowner would not be present and that a relative would be there to receive the estimate and information, the estimator said he would not have come out if he had known this. This is the reason that I did not use this company.

It is not only company policy but as well a best practice recommended by the Better Business Bureau and the MD Home Improvement Commission that the property owner be present during a free estimate appointment for any home improvement product. Even though in your situation everything would have worked out it, I'm sure you can understand that it can also work the other way and someone could schedule a demonstration for a product, sign a contract, we install, and then you the property owner comes back and says I never signed for anything. A very messy situation that would cause all parties much aggravation, time, resources, etc. I hope you can reconsider our proposal and contract since we do have the best product for your property, this was our fault in the contact center and I apologize we did not catch it in the beginning and clearly communicate with you our policy. I was scheduled to have new gutters and the Gutter Helmet Gutter Protection System install on to my home on Friday, June 21, 2013, and the service department called me at 3:24pm on Thursday, June 20, 2013 to tell me that the installation crew would be on site to do the installation the next day between 2pm - 4pm. During the signing of the contract, I requested that I be home to watch the installation and to let the crew into my backyard area, so I made sure I was around at 1:30pm on Friday, June 21st. At 3:43pm I called the service department to inquire about the status of the crew making it to my home, and the gentleman on the phone said that the 2pm - 4pm time frame window was just "an estimate". If this was just an estimate then why does the installation department even call you the day before to let you know approximately when the crew will be there. Why don't they just make you wait around all day for them? I also asked him how long it would take to de-install my current gutters and install the new ones, and he said about an hour. He said he'd try calling the crew to inquire about their status, but stated they might not answer their phone because they might be on a roof. He never called me back. I tried calling again at 6:00pm and 6:43pm to inquire about the crew's status. No one at the office answered the phone, and I had a 7pm appointment which I was already going to be late for. I decided I would have to leave by 7pm, so I left a note on my door to inform the crew that I would need to re-schedule with them. At 6:53pm, I received a call from Shawn (a member of the installation crew) who left me a voicemail message stating that they would not be able to make it out to complete the installation that day and wondered if they could come out the next day (Saturday) to complete it. I said I could be home, but that I wanted to be at the top of the list and asked when they normally started working. He said that they could be there by 9am, so I said let's do it then. On Saturday morning the crew didn't show up until 10:11am. I watched them complete the installation, and they seemed to do a good job, but they tore out some aluminum fasteners which hold the downspout to the siding on the back side of my home. They did put in some new screws in the fasteners to re-secure the downspout to the siding. There were a couple of screws and a piece of scrap aluminum from where a hole was drilled for the downspout left in the landscaping in the front. This is the reason why I gave this provider an F for Punctuality. I wouldn't have been so upset if they would have called me earlier to tell me that they wouldn't be able to come on Friday, but they left me out of the loop all afternoon and into the evening. Additionally, there is still some water that is dripping/running down the side of my home, and this is one of the main reasons I wanted to get new gutters was to fix issues with water leaking behind the gutters and running down the side of my home causing algae to grow on it and pools of water to form around the foundation which started leaking into my home. There has been a few rain storms since they installed the system, and it seems to be working good. I am also glad to see that the loose little shingle rocks are falling on to the ground and not into my gutters.

We met Chris Lenart of Gutter Helmet at the Baltimore Home and Garden show, where we scheduled a visit to measure and inspect our roof and gutters. Chris came out to discuss the job, but did not take any measurements. Instead, he said he was going to use a satellite survey service that measures the roof from a satellite and creates detailed dimensional drawings which they would use as the basis for the quote. Chris seemed very knowledgeable, but after waiting a week, we emailed him and he said he was still waiting for the satellite data. Another week went by, and I had received written quotes from all of the other contractors (6 roofers and 3 gutter companies) -- except him. As I was anxious to make a decision, I emailed him one last time asking for a quote, but never heard from him again. Another roofing contractor used the same (or similar) satellite service to get us a quote in less than a week.
Description of Work: We met Gutter Helmet at the Baltimore Home and Garden show and asked them to bid replacing our gutters. Even though they are a gutter company, they do roof replacements, so we asked them to quote that as well. The job involved approximately 5200 sq ft of roof, 6 skylights, and 300 ft of gutters (with gutter covers).

I contacted Gutter Helmet in early November to schedule an estimate for approximately 20 feet of gutter protection. I scheduled the estimate for November 12. Marty arrived within the scheduled window. He was very thorough and explained the Gutter Helmet product. Marty was not pushy at all and had a great sense of humor. He indicated that installation wouldn't occur until about 6 weeks later. I received a postcard from Gutter Helmet in early December indicating that the installation would occur the week of December 30. The week before December 30, I received a call to give a firm date for installation of December 31. I was not required to be home during the installation and I was not present that day. The Gutter Helmet system seems to be working as described. There have only been a couple rain showers since the install and I have not noticed any problems. August 2014 update: I was having problems with the gutters overflowing so I called Gutter Helmet to come take a look. They came out and said they "took care of the problem" and informed me that one of the panels needed to be replaced for $110. It rained hard after they came out to inspect and again, the gutters were overflowing. I called back to let them know and they said they would look again when they come to replace the panel. When they came, the technician said there were pine needles in the gutters. The reason I purchased the gutter helmet was to prevent these needles from getting in the gutters. The technician told me to have Gutter Helmet come clean the gutters twice a year. I am disappointed that the warranty only covers never having to clean the gutters again, not the product. A panel should not need to be replaced in less than 2 years.

Super fantasitic. The sales person was great. While he measured the job, he left me with a very educational video on how the system works. It is amazing. I asked about heaters for the gutters, he said I don't need them in this climate and he would only sell them to me if I insisted. I asked to replace the existing gutters. He said I didn't need to but he would sell them to me if I insisted. So I ust went with the basic product. They were able to match my new roof shingles perfectly. The only "bad" part of the experience was waiting for an istallation date. They do a lot of workocally. The install was done in a day and the work was impecable. I have not had a problem with gutters since, and if I ever do they will take care of it at no extra charge. This is a first class company with a great product at a reasonable price.

They are wonderful. I had an issue after they left and they came back to fix the problem even though it had to do with my property and not the gutter helmets themselves. I had a discount through a homeshow and I thought it was very reasonable for the work done and the lifetime warranty that was added. They were very responsive and there was no hassle getting them to come back out.

For several years all was well. They did come out and cleaned out the gutters if they stopped up, and they do stop up. However, when I put a new roof on a year ago, they wanted $565.00 to 're-install' the gutter guards. But, my roofer didn't need to take them off, he simply lifted the guard from the shingle took off the old and put on the new, At the time, my roofer griped about how he hated these things and he wanted extra money to have to take them off! When I called the co. to come out to unstop the recurring problem of water over the edge at a certain spot, they said that the ROOFERS screwed up the gutters and therefore it voided my warranty. ( the real reason was they didn't get their $565.oo to reinstall) This might be true, IF, when they installed them, they had insured the pitch of the gutters was correct. But they did not. They just installed them on the gutters as they were pitched. And funny thing that the stoppage after the new roof was at the same spot they serviced while the old roof was on. So, beware, this company will try to void their warranty if they can. And an inspector never came out to talk to me about it. Personally, I am considering gutterglove bec/ their consumer report review is the best. I wish I had a picture of how dirty the gutters were when I had one taken down to repair some wood rot. It was gross! Also, when the covers get pollen on them, they don't work very well. AND there is alot of pollen in MD. They need to be kept clean which is pretty difficult on a high roof. Bottom line? The product is only as good as their warranty.

Your problem and situation is most complex and we would like to resolve it as soon as possible since your system will not function correctly after being re-installed by an unauthorized party in 2011. Our service technician Dante was out this past March and reported that your whole system is out of alignment, panels are damaged and the entire system was tampered with by the roofer you used, which unfortunately has voided your warranty with Gutter Helmet. We will do everything we can to get your warranty back intact, but we will have to send our inspector out to inspect the damage thoroughly for you. He will be happy to walk around the house with you and show you where the system was tampered and damaged. I will have our local service manager call you to set something up that works for your schedule. I hope we can get this resolved quickly and to your satisfaction so you stay within the Gutter Helmet family.

While working with a roof replacement company after hail damage, we discovered our existing Gutter Helmet had also been damaged. The insurance company agreed to replace it after we talked with Gutter Helmet's service staff. They provided an bid for complete replacement and scheduled the work on short notice right after the roof had been replaced. One area on our house has drainage problems due to poor original placement of the roof for an addition and they have worked with us cooperatively to adjust the gutter helmet in this location, returning a couple of times to make sure it is set correctly to catch the water in the area where the two roofs are close. They handled the billing and lien waiver very promptly and accurately, and provided the new written warranty documents without having to be asked. For anyone considering this product, the sales pitch is exaggerated and water does drip down the outside bottom of the gutters some during heavy rains. The product does keep debris out of the rain gutters quite well and eliminates the problem of removing tree leaves, sticks, seed pods and such. They company is very good about checking or cleaning out any gutters that accumulate any small materials over time.

I saw a demonstration of the product at a local Home Show and was very impressed. I scheduled an estimate at that time and the estimator came on time, The work was scheduled and the installers arrived on time and did a good clean up. I think the product is pretty good except you get huge (3 - 4 foot) icicles hanging down after snow storms because the water slowly drips and freezes over the helmet. (This possibility was clearly stated by the company in their information sheet) They sell a product called helmet heat which is supposed to avoid this - but using electric resistance heat on gutter covers is probably not cost-effective in this area. Also, pollen/dirt on the helmets may cause water to overflow which we have as a problem every time it rains. Most of the problems we have had I think are a result of the fact that we really needed new gutters. The estimator said they were OK and unfortunately we did not get other estimates/opinions. The helmet system was installed on our existing gutters. We had just moved into this house so I don't know how old the gutter system is. We do still have drips on our heads at the front door and drips from the corners of the gutters everytime it rains. One of my gutters does not carry any water at all - even though the contract said it included "re-caulking, re-spiking, and align as needed" We had someone come out to look at that, but they said water would come out of it. (Yes - but not during a rain storm- so all the water is directed in one direction) Also the corner joints of the gutters leak water. Gutter Helmet did come and seal the seams, but they still leaked. I later called to have them replace (at my additional expense) the corner pieces on the gutter, but the appointment was rescheduled to a time I was not there and this didn't get done. The technician left a note saying that there was a lot of pollen on the helmets and this may be causing water to run off (and on our heads at the front door) So I am probably going to have to replace everything soon. UPDATE: Gutter Helmet did come out to my home a few days ago (Aug 2012) and said they would address every issue I brought up. The two people who came were very professional and seemed to know exactly what they were doing. I thought I needed new gutters because of the drips, and they said sometimes there are pinhole leaks - upon closer examination - they found that the roof was installed without a drip edge (for about 10 feet) right over my front door. This probably allowed water to back up and then leak down on our heads and on the door trim. They put in a new drip edge - even though this was not really part of the gutter installation. They also put 2 new corner pieces (miters?) on the ones that were dripping, and cleaned and re-sealed 2 other corners. They re-aligned the gutter that was not carrying water in one direction and cleaned all of the pollen off so rain would not run over the top. They were willing to do everything to make me a satisfied customer... they tested everything with water from my garden hose I am changing my rating to a B - the product is good, but still requires some maintenance - washing off pollen/dirt and the icicle issue (probably all gutter cover systems have this?) I am changing the responsiveness rating to A - because they did come several times to address every issue I had - and were especially good this last visit. I will be using them again for washing off pollen/dirt annually since we cannot go on ladders anymore.
