There was a leak in my basement ceiling, just below pipng to the basement bathroom. I called Stang and they were very responsive, getting to my house at mid-morning. The technician, Sean, workrd quickly and efficiently to to cut the ceiling, dispose of the accumulated water, and determine the leak was in fact from the first floor powder room. There he replaced toilet shut off valve and supply tube and checked for a succesful repair.
Description of Work: Diagnose and fix leak.

First floor bathroom shower drain clogged. I tried using a plunger and managed to open a hole in 50 year-old copper drian pipe in ceiling of basement bathroom. I patched hole with plumbers epoxy and called Stang: Dawne was very courteous and professional in understanding problem and selecting appropriate plumber for the job – Josh. Appointment made for next day. Josh arrived on time. I was hoping to have drains snaked and then get an estimate to replace all copper drains for three bathrooms. Josh did not recommend snaking as it would find other weak points in copper pipe for more holes. He gave me an estimate for replacing all copper bathroom drains with PVC and scheduled a time/date. I asked and received suggestions for reducing his work time (and thus the cost) such as removing drywall ceiling in basement bathroom for access to pipes. Josh and an assistant arrived on the scheduled day on time and began work immediately. They ran into some problems (I was not surprised as I haven’t done anything in this house without extra issues) so the estimated time and cost was a bit more. But all work was done very well. All bathroom drains now run freely. They cleaned up all debris. Josh even made suggestions for better ways to catch debris before it clogs the drains.
Description of Work: Slow draining and clogged bathroom drains. Replaced copper drain pipes from bathroom fixtures to cast iron pipe in three bathrooms with PVC. When I searched Angie's List, I had forgotten our family has used Stang since the mid-1960's without any issues so I was not surprised by the great reports.

We like them because they are responsive. Usually, they are here with in 24 hours of calling. They do a good job, and they don't have to come back. The first time is right, and we consider that a definite plus. We think their prices are reasonable. We will continue to use them in the future.

My experience with Stang Plumbing was a very good one. Starting with the initial phone conversation, Stang Plumbing's employees went out of their way to take care of my needs. They were on-time, listened to what I had to say, and completed the job in a timely manner. Stang Plumbing has become my plumber of choice. I will use them again.

Last summer after the tropical storms blew through, several houses in our town were flooded by the sewer lines backing up. We weren't affected, but our house was deemed "at risk" so it was included in a town plan to reimburse residents to have backflow preventer valves installed. Stang plumbing was recommended to us by our excellent HVAC contractor, so after checking them out on Angie's List, I gave them a call. We decided that while they were here, they could take care of a few other items on our "wish list", which included relocating the supply lines for the kitchen sink, which had frozen a few years ago, and replacing a corroded, useless utility faucet in the basement. Stang arrived promptly every day they were scheduled to show up. They were highly professional. The work was done well and in a meticulous fashion, and the workers were courteous and didn't mind being asked questions. Stang also took care of all the permits needed, as well as arranging the inspection. I rated them an A for everything other than price. When the backflow reimbursement program was started, our town officials polled a number of plumbers and found that the average price to install the valve was around $1000. The town decided to reimburse up to $1500, in case of "special" circumstances, like having to move walls or work in a totally finished basement. Stang's initial quote for our rather typical install was $1425, which was very close to the maximum allowance. I was worried that if extra work ended up being needed that we'd get pushed over the $1500, but when it was needed, they covered it with no extra charge. The original quote would have gotten them a C, but doing the extra work without an extra charged moved them back up into B territory. The amount charged for our other jobs was more than fair. We'll definitely call Stang again when we have plumbing to be done in the future, and we'd be glad to refer them to neighbors.
Description of Work: - Install backflow preventer valve (including jack hammering and patching basement floor) - Relocate kitchen supply lines to prevent freezing in the winter - Relocate kitchen drain - Replace utility sink faucet

Rob was excellent. He assessed the problem with my leaking kitchen drain and made objective recommendations regarding options for disposal replacement in the future. He was polite, professional and well informed about his craft. We was very receptive to my questions and helpful regarding other plumbing concerns a watnder heater options. His work was swift, and he was considerate enough to wear shoe covers before entering and was mindful of my kitchen floors, cabinets, and equipment. Absolutely would use again!!
Description of Work: Had a leak in the kitchen under the sink, suspected problems with my drain seal and disposal. Problem was both leaking seal, and loose fittings to all joints due to a very loud and powerful disposal motor. all seals tightened, sink drain resealed and all leaks checked with hot water, and disposal. also sink drain collar required fresh putty seal.

I've used Stang Plumbing before. These guys are always professional and do very good work. I will definitely call them again for any plumbing issues.
Description of Work: I thought I had another pinhole leak in the copper tubing in the piping to my upstairs bathrooms. Stang Plumbing responded quickly, efficiently and professionally. When I called to make the appointment the woman who answered the phone was very professionaly and helpful. She explained that their rates had changed since the last time I used their services. When the plumber and his assistant arrived (on time), they checked the upstairs bathroom fixtures and discovered the leak was actually from the tank in the guest bathroom. They quickly changed the tank and eliminated the leak. They also changed the float in the toilet in the master bathroom and asked if there was anything else I needed. They worked quickly and were finished in what seemed like just a few minutes.

Bottom line: they came out, diagnosed that it was a cryptically defective nut in what they installed, and even though additional parts and work was needed (the pipe leading to the commode had problems during the re-repair), they took care of the repair cost, labor and parts, completely. This is even though I did not report the problem until 10 days or so, after the 30 day warrenty exclusion. (Not worried about the staining, as I plan to do some touch up painting, shortly, anyway.)
Description of Work: Well, I wanted to update the last report because of how well Stange Plumbing treated us. Here is the story, in brief. We had work done Dec 29th, 2011. Late in January, we noticed staining and a leak above our kitchen sink, below an upstairs commode, where Stang had replaced a fill valve. I thought it was simply the shutoff valve, and turned it off, before going on a trip. When I got back, and was looking into it, I noticed it was where the pipe intered the fill valve.

It went very well. Josh discussed the issue and answered all of my questiong prior to doing any work. He suggested creating an easier access point and told me why. It made sense and I agreed. He unclogged the inside main line (about 25 feet). After he was finished we also discussed potential future work. It was a pleasant experience. The price was as stated so no surprices but the price still shocks me for 1 hours work.

The last time I used Stang Plumbing a couple months ago was to repair a toilet that kept running after flushing and to replace fixtures in a sink and showerhead. Their employee was on time and the work was completed quckly and efficiently as always. No problems after that! I very highly recommend Stang Plumbing!
Description of Work: Stang Plumbing is the only plumbing service I will use. They have always been prompt, profesional and used quality materials. When Stang has fixed a problem for me or replaced fixtures I know the job will be done correctly the first time. When my daughter recently had problems in a newly built house rather than use the contractor's repairs for free I told her to use Stang Plumbing. Had the contractor done his job right the first time there would be no need for any repair, free or paid. Stang's prices may not be inexpensive (not sure because I won't even have another plumber out for an estimate) but my motto is *buy cheap, buy twice*. The quality and service Stang provides saves me a lot of money and headaches in the future. I need to replace my water treatment system for well water and two sump pumps in the spring and Stang will be my new providers for those. I very highly recommend them!

The water heater stopped producing hot water. I called Stang and 2-3 hours later the plumber arrived with the replacement water heater. Josh showed up on time. He saw the problem and got right to work. After replacing both shut off valves and reconnecting the sink, he noticed a small drop of water on a supply line near the faucet and replaced the line. He was courteous and professional. Yesterday, the saddle valve for our icemaker broke. Fortunately, my wife and I were home and heard the water running. After turning off the water supply, I immediately went to Angies List and located a plumber who had performed well for my daughter. This company was busy and not able to respond rapidly to our emergency. I then researched other plumbers on Angies list and zeroed in on Stang located in Gaithersburg based on customer reviews. Stang advised that I was next up for a plumber who was working nearby. Less than an hour later, I received a call from Stang that the plumber should arrive at my home in about 15 minutes, which he did. Rob was very professional and quite efficient. He located the problem area quickly and had to break through the ceiling to get to the problem. After these repairs, we asked Rob to check a problem with an upstairs toilet. He diagnosed the problem (defective fill valve) immediately and replaced the part. He completed both projects in about two hours, which impressed me. My wife and I could not be happier with the rapid resolution of our problem. Also, I consider the cost quite reasonable.

I have two tank-less water heaters in my house. Stang came out last November to try and figure out why they were not working properly. They came out again with a Noritz representative in January 2011 and the conclusion was that I need to added a third heater. They said that I need a another system installed but the new system needed to be the exact model as my others. The respresentative gave Stang the information for a local plumbing resource to obtain the additional heater. Once they got a price of the heater, Stang was to send me a price to install. During our discussion, I told John (Stang) to "just go ahead a do whatever needs to be done if this will solve the problem". I called repeatedly for an update or a price or even if they are capable of doing the upgrade since it involved moving the existing heaters and installing the third. I have been trying to get ahold of John for months on end with no response. It got to the point where I just wanted the information of the plumbing supplier so that I could contact them to purchase the third heater--as the heaters were discontinued and I wanted to obtain one while they were still available and then have another plumber install it. All I needed from Stang was the contact information, which they have refused to give me. (John gave me his personal cell phone number at the beginning of this process so I could always get in touch with him but I have always contacted their office). Every message I have left with their office to call me back was never returned. I have been very patient and all I am asking for is a response from this company with the contact information of both the Noritz representative and the plumbing supply house so that I can move forward. To have to wait over a year for a response is truly unprofessional--especially since they could have given me this information back in January 2011 when he was here but he said the would handle everything! This is a custom home and I told John that we wanted the problem fixed, if he could fix it. Price was never an issue and I never received a price proposal from Stang. I believe he never contacted the plumbing resource because the work was outside the scope of his expertise. I believe this because while he was here in January with the Noritz representative, the representative had to explain to him what to do and how to fix the problem. The Noritz representative also told John that his employees (including himself) could take training classes on how to do this work to educate themselves. As soon as I get the information that I need, the problem will be fixed by another plumber at whatever price it takes. To say that we had "at least two other plumbing contractors that had already been involved in trying to meet the members needs" is a flat out lie. We joined Angie's List to find a plumber to find out what our problem was. We found Stang listed on the Honor Role and called them because they were close to us. They were the one and only company we have had look at this problem. To date, we have paid them $614.00 and we are still waiting for a response from them. UPDATE: I had e my problem fixed by another local plumber. It turned out that all that was needed was a diverter (part) that cost ~$200.00, which he purchased through The Plumbery in Mt. Airy. The staff there knew immediately who the manufacturer was and ordered the part. The problem was that the dial was broken and would not turned completely for more hot water. That is why the water would not get hot. Now that it is installed, my problem is fixed. Boy to think that I would have spent THOUSANDS with Stang is mind blowing.

Response from Stang Plumbing
This client first called us on November 22, 2010 with a hot water supply problem (was running out of hot water prematurely). Upon diagnosing and troubleshooting the hot water system, we found that the original system had been undersized in the following manner: The water heaters in the existing system were a pair of Noritz brand tankless water heaters, with a maximum combined rating of 18 gallons per minute. We found fixtures in the master bathroom alone to exceed the capabilities of this unit (the master shower had 2 shower heads and 6 body-sprays with a combined demand of 28 gallons per minute). This is not including the fixtures in the rest of the house that also use hot water. We indicated this on our service tickets for the diagnostic visit by stating the units were undersized “with a maximum hot water supply demand capability that did not meet (the client’s) demand”. In sum, we informed the client that all of the hardware (heaters) that had been installed was functioning properly; the system was simply undersized for the hot water requirements. The client then informed us that “this system has never worked properly from the time it was installed”. We informed the client that the options included the following: -Add additional water heating capacity via the use of additional tankless unit(s) to be installed in series with the existing unit. -Replacing the existing unit with a larger unit capable of supplying the fixtures present. The client had us provide cost estimates for adding an additional tankless heating unit. This took considerable research on our part due to the fact that the existing unit was a discontinued model that we had to search extensively for to find a compatible additional unit. At the time that we provided pricing for the additional heating unit we had found, the member said that the price was more than she thought reasonable, and wanted the contact information to contact our supplier directly to negotiate her own pricing. We explained that this supplier (as well as most of our suppliers) will not sell retail to an end user, and we were not going to further discount the 20% markup we were going to place on the unit (which is small in comparison to the amount of unbilled time we had in research and troubleshooting at this point). We didn’t hear anything further until eight months later, at which time the member called and was verbally abusive to our staff, and we declined to return her call because we felt that the client was being unreasonable, we had observed highly erratic behavior throughout our dealings, and we already had a large amount of uncompensated time chasing down a solution to a problem we didn’t create. The member states that they tried to contact us for months, we have no record of this whatsoever (we keep very careful notes and records of incoming calls). After her initial refusal of our proposal we only show that she called eight months later at which time (as explained above) she was abusive to our staff and we elected not to deal with her any longer. We will happily provide the contact information for the Noritz representative, as this person re-iterated to the member exactly what we had been representing and in fact was instrumental in helping to find the additional unit and doing engineering research on the installation. Again we state categorically that we have no record of the member trying to contact us after declining to proceed with our work proposal. We did not hear from the member again for eight months. We also know that by the time we were called in to look at the situation there had been at least two other plumbing contractors that had already been involved in trying to meet the members needs. We cherish our Angie’s List rating, and we work very, very hard to satisfy all of our clients. We put a lot of work into this member's problem and were forthright in all representations and statements. Sometimes we are the bearers of bad news, and nobody wants to be told that their plumbing system has congenital issues that will be expensive to make right. We went to a lot of effort to come up with and provide the relevant information for this member and we are disappointed that they are making these statements. There is much more information we can share about this situation, our response is edited to fit within the size limit of the form. We will happily share all relevant documents and information with any member.

I apologize that you feel we were trying to upsell items to you. Our technicians are not paid on a comission. When our technicians recommend replacing a faucet/fixture or other plumbing related item, they are doing so because they feel this item may cause trouble in the future. Our staff is trained on a regular basis and we want to make sure that when they arrrive for a service call that they listen to the needs of the homeowner, address the issue, remedy the issue to the homeowners satisfaction and also make any recommendations as they see fit. We always strive to ensure that our customers feel comfortable and competient in the service technician that we have send to them and that the technician make recommendations based on his professional opinion. We would much rather bring something to your attention while we are at your house the first time then to have you call back disappointed that we did not mention the issue in the first place. According to the invoice from this service call on April 12, 2011 we were called out to address 6 different issues with various plumbing fixtures and faucets at your residence, we addressed the issues and took care to repair the items that were in need of repair. Our plumbers will always advise our customer if they feel any fixtures/faucets or other plumbing items, that we are asked to diagnose, should be replaced instead of repaired. There are occasions when an item is beyond repair and/or is getting to the point that we recommend replacement. We would prefer to advise you that, in our professional opinion, we recommend a replacment and leave the decision in your hands, then to not say anything and have an issue arise at a later point because of it. I hope that this explains the reasoning behind the recommendation of replacing yiour faucet and that we can look forward to working with you again in the future. All of us here at Stang Plumbing value your business and your opinion.

Stang Plumbing has been servicing our well and plumbing needs for 27 years. Most recently, our water pressure dropped significantly, and Stang diagnosed the problem as a leak or break in the pipe leading from the well to the house. Replacing this pipe was a big job, made more challenging by the torrential rain during the three days that Stang worked to diagnose and fix the problem. The staff was, as always, highly skilled, professional, responsive and friendly. The large and complicated procedure to extract the broken copper pipe and replace it with a new one went flawlessly, without trenching. The interface to the well also had to be changed, which was accomplished on the 3rd day. Stang left my house with the well water working, pressure tank adjusted, filtration system refreshed and on line, and the site cleaned up both inside and outside. Can't ask for more than that!
Description of Work: Stand diagnosed the cause of the drop in water pressure, and replaced the pipe leading from the well head to the house and associated interfaces over the following two days.

We were attempting to change out the water shut off valves in the bathroom when the connecting pipe behind the sink vanity broke. I browsed Angie's List for a highly-rated plumbing service who did emergency work on the weekends and chose Stang. Very professional service and the technician was great! He explained everything he needed to do and was extremely personable. Cost was a bit pricey but it was the weekend and the work was exceptional. I will definitely call for all my plumbing needs.

water heater repair

On the day of installation they were prompt, very efficient and clean, and didn't charge us for any additional work that needed to be done. They were EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL! We have used Stang Plumbing in the past and would definitely do so again!
Description of Work: We had a 14 year old water heater that was in desperate and immediate need of replacement [it was already beginning to leak from the bottom and sides]. Stang was right on with their over-the-phone estimate, told us exactly the size and model of the water heater they would be replacing ours with, and didn't try to sell us anything bigger than we actually needed.
