we hired them to move us into our new house, after purchasing the big deal. the team was over 2 hours late, setting us back several hours. the crew was extremely nice and professional, i believe the move before us "ran long" and that's what caused their tardiness. ours "ran long," too - i had accurately described the size of the apartment we were moving and had everything packed, so i think the scheduler was just inaccurately estimating. we had just refinished our floors, so i had paper down over them. the crew was very careful and respectful of that - we only got one small scratch from a box spring. since there was no damage to anything else, i consider it a success!

We had everything packed and ready to go for the movers. I'm glad that we did because the move took about 4 hours.
Description of Work: The movers were very nice, but they were over an hour late. Also, a couple of our pieces of furniture were scratched and torn after the move. The other problem was that the truck was a little too small so all of our stuff did not fit. Once the movers were there, they worked hard and were very nice.

Although I was never able to speak with any of the company representatives on the phone, they were responsive to email, so we set up the appointment through electronic communications. I was able to get a date within 2 weeks after contacting them. They were supposed to arrive at 7a, but one of the movers called me at 6:30a the move morning to say they would arrive between 7:30-8. Got another call at 8:15 to tell me traffic was bad and they didn't arrive until 9:15. . . so already starting 2 hours late. (although I did appreciate the updates). The movers were very friendly and professional, and took great care not to damage the furniture or the walls of my house. But despite my telling the company in advance what needed moving, and the fact that there were 2 flights of stairs involved, they were not able to move one of the larger pieces. So unfortunately, the job could not be completed. They were able to get the other pieces out without incident and within our 3 hour time period.
Description of Work: I had a coupon from Angie's List for $199 for 3 hours of moving work. I needed some bedroom furniture moved from my 4 story townhouse to a donation center in Silver Spring.

They are very customer oriented, my experience with them has gone very well so far. The man drove three hours to get here and he charged me nothing, though I did pay him for the gas he spent. He hasn't done the move yet but I believe everything will go well.

First Experience: For my move, I scheduled Movers on Duty about a month before my scheduled move date. The only time the company had available at that time was 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. Not ideal, but you take what you can get. On moving day, the movers were nearly three hours late. I understand that some moves take longer than expected causing delays for the next job, but they didn't even call to advise me of the delay. And to add to the frustration, nobody answered at the phone numbers provided on the company's website (even the after-hours numbers). So I was sitting at my house, everything packed, not knowing if I was going to move that day. When the movers did finally show up, there were only two of them in a small rental truck -- I advised the reservation agent when I made the appointment that I had a full two bedroom townhouse to move. The two guys worked hard until around 11pm, and finally decided to call for back-up. Another crew arrived with another truck and finally finished the move around midnight. This was the most stressful moving experience I've ever had. While the crew was mostly polite and professional, they did scratch some floors and damage some goods in the move. I was so exhausted and frustrated by the time they finished that I just wanted to be done with the whole process and for them to leave. Second Experience: I used Movers on Duty to haul away some junk a couple of months later. I didn't bother shopping around so I don't know if their rates are competitive. I pad $199 for the big deal which included half a truck load. I ended up having about 3/4 of a truck load, and they charged me an additional $450, for a total of $649. They were punctual and worked quickly. The only complaint I have regarded their continual complaining about how much junk there was. (I had a pile of construction material from a basement project to haul away.)
Description of Work: I used Movers on Duty on two separate occasions after purchasing two Angie's List Big Deals. The first time I used them, it was to move about five blocks down the road. The second time was a couple of months later to haul away some junk.

It was a great move. Movers on Duty called and said that they would be at the house at 7:30 a.m. .When they were going to be 10 minutes late ,they called to let us know. They swiftly loaded the truck. There was an extra $10.00 to wrap the mattress in plastic sheeting. When we got to the new house the fouton didn't fit through the door and landing to the basement. They took it apart as much as possible and it still wouldn't fit. They really tried. In addition, they carried a piece of furniture that was already in the house to the basement. They went out of their way to get everything right. I would hire them again.
Description of Work: I bought a coupon from Angie's Big Deals. It was for 3 hours of moving service for $299.00. My daughter had just bought a house and was moving some furniture out of our house. It was about a 1/2 truck load and with my husband's bad back, my daughter and I couldn't move things by ourselves.

I was given a time frame that they would be there between 8-9am to begin the job. I called the general manager to find out when they would be there. He said they had trouble with their truck and had to rent a truck. There were 4 men and they had a rental truck that they had just rented. Inside the truck there were 6 used boxes. Jose was in charge. He said that they were not prepared for the packing. He thought that they were there to just be the muscle. They thought they were only going to move boxes. The general manager finally showed up with some boxes from Lowes. He said he could not find any wardrobe boxes. He was in another truck and had another person with him. I went inside and came back out and he was gone. I called him to ask if he could come back and we could use his truck, as well as, him and the other person with him. He would not do so. Throughout the move, the movers got in a series of arguments with each other. They were doing this in the front yard of both my old house and new house. They ran out of packing materials during the move and had to end up using our blankets and quilts to wrap items in. I had to end up calling my family over to help pack boxes as well as use thier own vehicles to move boxes. It is a 45 min drive each way. The moving truck had to make 3 trips. There were damages to both houses and some furniture. I asked how to report and the guy did not know. The move ended up taking a total of 16 hours. I have tried to contact the company by phone and email and they have not gotten back to me. Update: 6/4/12 Since I had originally submitted this review, I have gotten calls from 2 of the workers (on my personal phone) asking me when I was going to pay this company. They do not get paid until I pay the company. I find this to be extremely unprofessional behavior.
Description of Work: I called them to get movers. I wanted them to come over the pack all of our belongings. They said that they would bring the boxes and supply everything. I was quoted an 8-9 hour move. With the estimate I was given, they understood that I needed everything packed and moved. The estimate given was for 1500.00. By the time they were finished the total was 2700.00. I have not paid anything except the 100.00 deposit.

It is kind of funny to see how an average of 350 complaints per month are made against moving companies that wait until they load the customer's belongings onto the truck to then just come up with thousands of dollars on hidden fees and extra charges, even threatening to take their stuff away if they don't pay what the company requests... You are saying that the job took 16 hrs, 3 trips of a 28 ft truck (Largest available truck before an 18 wheeler) plus several car loads with extra help of your family. The signed contract you electronically signed weeks before the moving day, clearly states that the estimate provided may change depending on the services requested such as packing and unpacking, and other reasons such as traffic or weather. Since we did not perform a visual estimate (Where we always provide our customers with a flat All-inclusive rate). No overtime was charged over the 8th hour and there were no hidden fees. Today Monday 06/04/2012 we find your complaints everywhere on the web saying that you tried contacting us (during the weekend and not during our regular business hours) and that is why you took the time to write all these bad reviews. We do have hundreds of good reviews all over the web, including Angie's list. And when we get a complaint we do our best to make things right. When we talked to you, quote: "I think I shouldn't pay a penny" doesn't sound reasonable for us nor for any person in this world. Job was done, your items moved to the new location gas and truck rental spent and supplies used. This just shows again that no matter what a company does we will never be able to please every single customer we meet. -The guys might have been late, as it was explained to you We didn't want to take any chances driving a truck that might have broken down with all your belongings on it and that is why we rented one. -Guys did not have supplies, but my general manager personally drove 1 hour and a half to drop off boxes. -You asked him to come back with the truck 7 hours later to load a few (3 pieces) items, and when he mentioned that he was almost 2 hours away from your location dealing with a flat tire, you hanged up on him. We are trying to make things right and have already offered a $500.00 discount but please understand that if they were any damages, all you have to do is fill up the claims form we have already sent you so the process can begin. PS: If the guys are calling you is because although you gave them a tip at the end of the job, you did refuse to pay your bill. If we don't get paid how do you expect us to pay them $320.00 each? The rest of the week they already got paid for, all they are waiting for is that you pay the bill as you assured them you would on monday after speaking to a manager. We have a dining room cabinet with a glass door. They said they were offering a 3 hours of service. But the distance was very far. They said don't worry about distance. They were very nice and professional. They were very good at handling that very large cabinet. I don't know what to say about the company.

I wouldn?t recommend this company. I didn?t have an issue with the actual movers, but the company is awful. The company made promises that they didn?t keep. I had a multiple location, time sensitive move for which I was supposed to have 3 movers. Not only were the movers late, but there were only 2 of them. This greatly affected the efficiency with which the job was supposed to be done. The 2 movers that did show up were phenomenal. (I wish they had their own company and didn?t work for these people because they were outstanding.) But, I was paying for 3 people and not 2 people, and I was paying for all the items to be moved within a certain amount of time. The company said they were sending a third person to the second location but that person didn?t get dispatched. My dad had to help the two movers get stuff on the truck. The person at the company told me that we should have waited till the 3rd person showed up! Really? When they are already late?! I was supposed to pay $660 for the job. I spoke to the manager and ended up having a shouting match with him which ended up with him hanging up the phone on me. I thought about paying $440, since only 2 out of 3 people showed up to do the job, but the two that did show did a good job. I chose to pay $500. It was not the agreed price, but nothing that was agreed to was adhered to. I figured $500 was enough to make them go away and never have to deal with them again!

I am very displeased with the service I received from Movers on Duty on Saturday, May 26, 2012. The movers were late, were not in a hurry to finish, were not professional movers, damaged our furniture, and did not fulfill the terms of our order because they were so late. I requested a refund for all of the trouble caused by Movers on Duty and the additional expenses I incurred, outlined below. I found Movers on Duty from Angie?s List. I purchased an Angie?s List deal for $199 for 2 men to move for 3 hours. I arranged my order with Gabriel on March 30, 2012. Per my order, the movers were supposed to arrive at the pick-up address between 6-8 am on May 26. I confirmed my order, including pick-up time, with Gabriel on May 21, 2012. My partner and I had packed and broken down everything, including the bed and desk, and prepped the apartment so that the only thing the movers had to do was move everything down to the truck. On May 26, the movers did not arrive at the pick-up location until 10 am. I called and left 2 voice mail messages for Gabriel asking where the movers were and what their estimated time of arrival was. He did not return my calls. I called the Movers on Duty office, asked if they could locate the movers. He did and informed me at 8:20 that the movers would be at the pick-up location by 9 am. They did not arrive until 10 am. We reserved the elevators and loading docks at both locations and because the movers were over 2 hours late, they had to hustle to meet our reservation times. My partner and I ended up moving a lot of the boxes to the curb by the time the movers arrived. The movers did not hustle and in fact, one of the movers told me he had a knee injury. The same mover told me that they were late because they were finishing up a move before us. Excuse me, if we were booked for a 6-8 am arrival, we should have been the first move of the day. Additionally, the men arrived in an unmarked truck. That is not the sign of a professional moving company. The men were not professional movers. They could not figure out how to get our couch out of our apartment and ended up scratching the leather. They broke a part of our desk so that the pieces do not fit securely. They were so slow that my partner and I still had to help them bring items down from the apartment and load the truck. I have back problems and the entire reason I hired movers was so that I did not have to lift much. When we arrived at the destination, we had 45 minutes to be done with the loading dock and elevator before the next person?s scheduled time was supposed to begin. Again, my partner helped the movers unload the truck and put everything in the apartment. By the time they finished, we were 15 minutes late in our reservation and we had the movers for only 2.5 hours. We would have considered paying for another hour to move the rest of our stuff, but the movers arrived so late, that there was no time left. The movers then told us that they were going to another move in Baltimore. What company schedules 3 moves in one day for 2 men? What kind of company uses unmarked trucks? The movers ended up only moving our furniture (which consisted of a king size bed, couch, recliner, ½ of a desk, 1 flat screen TV, 1 small dining table, 4 small chairs, and a book shelf), 2 bikes, and about 8 boxes. That was only about 20% of our belonging and we live in a 1 bedroom apartment. We had to rent a U-Haul pick-up truck on Sunday to get our other flat screen TV, 2 coffee tables, the other ½ of the desk, and boxes. We also had to get 3 more car loads (we have small cars). Everything could have been moved on Saturday if the movers arrived on time and were professional (meaning they knew how to move furniture out of an apartment and organize it in a truck), but instead, it took 3 times as long to move a 1 bedroom apartment. That is crazy. My experience with Movers on Duty is the worse customer service I have ever experienced. Movers on Duty should not commit to services that they cannot provide. I emailed this review to Movers on Duty and the response I received was from Gabriel, that he'll "check with the guys to see what happened" and check back in with me.
Description of Work: Moving from a 1 bedroom apartment to another 1 bedroom apartment. Services actually performed were moving some pieces of furniture to a moving truck.

Hi Member, Sorry about the delay but we are sort of confused... He (I guess your husband or boyfriend) who was there and took care of all the paperwork also filled up a review for. But he actually rated us: Overall experience B since we were late but stated that you would certainly use us again in the future. This review was also forwarded to Angie's list. We just don't understand how if both of you were there while the guys were working. How is he pleased with the service while you are not? We at least know that he was there because we have his signatures on the contract and review form but we are wondering if you were present and what do you expect the outcome to be out of this complaint. I would be more than glad to email you a copy of the review if you would like me to. But please talk to him and ask him how the move went, maybe that will help you see that his experience wasn't as bad as you may have thought. I gave a B on punctuality because they were late getting the house to start the move. They said the truck broke down. They did a good job and a break down could happen to anyone. But, it did put our schedule quite a bit behind while we waited for them. Once they arrived they loaded the furniture quickly and were careful not to damage anything. The movers were courteous and worked hard. They had to carry a lot of heavy furniture up and down several sets of steps. They didn't complain but just worked until they were finished. We would use them again.
Description of Work: We needed help moving large pieces of furniture from a town house to a home a short distance away.
